Play Episode Listen Later Apr 21, 2025 18:24

Exactement.

This is the case of JB meeting JB!While our paths have occasionally crossed, mainly at social events such as the Goodwood Festival of Speed or back in the day at the bar at the BRDC dinner and dance, I have always thought Jenson Button and I would be great friends. He just never knew it!Anyway, now we both live in Los Angeles I have hoped for a while that we could sit down for Life with Legends. The trouble is that Jenson is busier now than ever, so last week, before the madness of racing seasons kick off, we met at the Petersen Museum and guess what; we were like old friends! When you are an active racing driver working your way through your career you tend to not to get that involved or aware of other peoples racing backgrounds. For me that was the case with Jenson, but once I read up on his early days in karting and how successful he was, it all dropped into place on why and how he set himself up for such an amazing F1 career! He literally won nearly everything possible in Karting against some of the other (now) biggest names in racing; 3 x British Open Kart Champion, Winner of the European Super A Championship and many, many more. His incredibly smooth and precise driving style led to a long stint in Formula One winning 15 races and the Drivers Championship in 2009, and was definitely a fan favorite known for his easy going nature and relatability. While his post-Formula One career is pretty far reaching, but his appetite to still race is huge, and so some very exciting news ahead for him - stay tuned! Thanks to everyone at the Petersen for giving us space to record this episode and a highlight for sure was seeing a couple of his old F1 cars in the vault! Very cool!Anyway, we had a great time and covered a lot of ground in two hours and I hope you enjoy the conversation as much as I did having it.JB

My guest this week is 18 year old Scott Mckenna. If asked at 14 what his dream was, it would have been 'racing driver', but asked what he thought his reality was likely to be, he'd have probably said "Ummm, working for Mum and Dad in Norway probably". Yet Scott is the 2019 British Ginetta GT5 Champion and one of only 13 British racers under 24 to be selected as a British Racing Drivers Club "Rising Star.' These young racers are chosen by the BRDC because they have achieved success in the upper levels of motorsport and are considered the ones to watch!.We chat about his very calm approach to his racing career - quite a different approach to other young drivers I have spoken to; we discuss how he stays focused over the season, how he deals with pressures and difficult hurdles; and we chat about how he juggles his racing career with his '18 year old world' which, certainly for me, would have been a hard one! Scott is taking every thing very much in his stride and I think you will agree after listening to this chat, why the BRDC have penned him as a rising star.Follow Scott's journey @scottkckenna27 and http://scottmckenna.net/author/scott-mckenna/.

This week - you asked and we answered, and as a bonus we even answered correctly! You asked us about points, and we give you the lowdown on how points are awarded, from what the scale is to the difference between the drivers and constructors championships.  As an added bonus we talk about race distances too. In other news - Nico Rosberg's Drivers Championship trophy was lost in the mail for a few days - our guess is that it was shipped via DHL. Are you a Snapchat user? F1 has a new partnership with Snapchat. Sauber has an new boss, and he's trying to figure out the whole Honda thing.  It doesn't sound like Longbow Financial thought real highly of the Honda deal. Kimi Raikonnen is doing his best, no matter what Sergio Marchione says, oh and  Ferrari doesn't want to hire Fernando Alonso again. Danil Kyviat wants a confirmation from Red Bull that he'll have a seat in the organization next year. The FIA says - no, Valteri Bottas didn't jump the start in Austria. The BRDC has no intention of selling Silverstone to FOG. And the first run with the new "shield" concept wasn't a roaring success...

Was the 2017 Spanish Grand Prix the most exciting race of the Formula 1 season to date? Well, yes, say the Pitpass team of Chris Balfe, Max Noble and Mat Coch, but that's hardly anything to shout about. The battle between Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel was enthralling, on that they agree, and that made for a welcome change following the snoozefest that was the Russian Grand Prix. However what Spain didn't provide the team with was a clear indication of the new pecking order. There was an abundance of updates up and down pit lane, but just how much influence did they have on the pecking order? One thing that's clear is that Red Bull remains the clear third best team, though Force India is punching well above its weight - as we've come to expect - and could mount a challenge to Red Bull if it's not careful. Force India's secret has been its driver combination, suggests Noble and Balfe, a strength not all of its midfield rivals can boast. Indeed there is a smattering of lopsided lineups out there, and the Pitpass team highlights two that need an urgent reversal in fortunes, for failing that a firm hand from management. It's what's missing at Mercedes, suggests Balfe and Coch, after news that Hamilton has been racing without a drinks bottle in 2017 to save weight. Having come across the team radio with the sort of voice you normally pay for by the minute, the post-race revelation prompted some fairly serious discussion among the Pitpass ranks. As did news of Silverstone's uncertain future. Of course we've been here before, so much so it feels like we never left, all the while the future of the British Grand Prix hangs by a thread with Formula 1's new owners unwilling - or is it unable - to throw the BRDC a bone.

This week we got an answer to a burning question that we know has been at the forefront of everybody's mind - what has Pastor Maldonado been up to? Turns out he's still holding out for a "competitive" race seat, which is why he was apparently in talks with the virtually defunct KV racing to get an IndyCar seat - as long as he didn't have to drive on ovals... Pastor says that he also had talks with Sauber but couldn't come to an agreement and was hopeful that Nico Rosberg's retirement would have led to an opportunity for him to join a competitive team... As everyone had pretty much expected by now - Valteri Bottas is moving to Mercedes and Filipe Massa's retirement has ended almost before it could actually begin. The Halo is done, although we don't know if F1 will actually adopt it. Every track will be making changes for this year's new rules - while the BRDC insists that it hasn't activated the exit close to get out of hosting the British GP. And Franz Tost thinks Formula 1 should roll out e-races...

Last Chance For Fans To Join Sir Jack Brabham BRDC Memorial Motor racing fans still have the unique chance to join the Sir Jack Brabham Memorial event, hosted by the BRDC and organised by son David Brabham, at the Silverstone Wing from 2pm on Friday 24 October. Those wishing to attend must register for a ticket by this Friday, 17 October by contacting Deborah Jennings at deborah.jennings@brdc.co.uk or call 01327 850 925. The event is shaping up to be a fitting celebration of the triple Formula 1 World Champion’s remarkable life and outstanding contribution to motorsport, held in support of Kidney Research UK, with valued backing from Honda, Arbuthnot Latham and G.H. Mumm Champagne. Renowned F1 designer Gordon Murray, whose pioneering Brabham cars won 22 Grands Prix and two Drivers’ titles with Nelson Piquet in 1981 and 1983, will be joining Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Frank Williams, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Tony Brooks and Nick Goozée on stage to share their memories of the legendary driver and engineer. Those attending the event will have the opportunity to donate to Kidney Research UK in Sir Jack’s memory, while anyone can make a contribution to the charity via the official Just Giving page www.justgiving.com/SirJackBrabham Paul Oz, official licensed artist to James Hunt, Bruce Lee, Star Trek, Denis the Menace, Ali, Mr Men and Little Miss, and Thunderbirds, who has also created commissioned work for the Instituto Ayrton Senna and Jenson Button among many others, has also pledged his support to the event. His stunning portrait of Sir Jack will be on display and Paul will be selling official prints of the masterpiece to help raise funds for Kidney Research UK. Paul commented: “The Sir Jack Brabham portrait was created for my Singapore gallery show over the Formula 1 race week, I thought with poignant timing. With the high Australian contingent out there for the F1, it turned out more fitting than I’d ever have thought. It’s a privilege to be able to celebrate the life of a motorsport legend with what I do – but an absolute honour to be invited by David to be part of the memorial.” The Sir Jack Brabham Memorial has been made possible thanks to support from Honda, who powered Sir Jack to 12 out of 15 Formula 2 race wins while sealing the F1 and F2 titles in the same iconic year of 1966; Brabham’s private bankers Arbuthnot Latham; and Formula One Management, through its partnership with G.H. Mumm Champagne. David Brabham commented: “We are getting closer to what will be a fantastic event at Silverstone celebrating my father’s amazing career. Jack was instrumental to so many drivers, engineers and fans in the UK that this special event gives people the opportunity to come and pay their respects to a remarkable man at a racetrack he loved and did so well at. I would like to thank the BRDC and Silverstone for helping to organise and host the event, plus I do look forward to listening to the stories his compatriots will share with us.”

A MAGICAL STEP BACK IN TIME The Goodwood Revival really is a magical step back in time, a unique chance to revel in the glamour and allure of motor racing in the romantic time capsule of the world’s most authentic motor circuit. Leave the ‘Modern World’ Behind The Revival is the world’s most popular historic motor race meeting and the only event of its kind to be staged entirely in the nostalgic time capsule of the 1940s, 50s and 60s. It is the biggest and best historic motor racing party of the year. The Revival offers visitors the opportunity to leave the ‘modern world’ behind and join motor sport luminaries including Sir Stirling Moss, Richard Attwood, John Surtees and Derek Bell in an unabashed celebration of flat-out, wheel-to-wheel racing around a classic racetrack, untouched by the modern world. Revival First-timers to Compete in Half-century Racers at the Sell-out 2013 Goodwood Revival Two famous names from the world of competitive cycling and motor racing will be taking to the Goodwood track in anger for the very first time at this year’s sell-out Revival (13-15 September) in two cars marking a combined century of motor sport. Celebrated cycling champion and Olympic gold medallist Sir Chris Hoy will be taking to the wheel of a Mini Cooper S for his inaugural race at Goodwood in the popular and hard-fought St Mary’s Trophy race for saloon cars. Challenging him for the chequered flag will be ex-Formula 1 driver and TV pundit Mark Blundell, who will also be competing at Goodwood for the first time, in a Lotus Cortina. Both the Mini Cooper S and Ford Lotus Cortina share their 50th anniversaries this year, so it seems only fitting that these two popular and fast-paced British saloon cars will be raced by two very rapid British racers, even if they are both new to the Goodwood Revival!

Now in its sixth year, BRDC SuperStars is well established as a programme which any serious young British driver aspires to be part of. As the scheme only selects the very brightest prospects, competition for places is tough and keenly fought. The SuperStars are supported with training programmes which the on-track results of the last two years suggest, do help give those taking part a competitive edge. SuperStars compete across the different disciplines from single seaters to prototypes, touring cars to GTs. Indeed, it is an important part of the scheme’s ethos to ensure that those who benefit from the support go on to be successful across all disciplines of motor sport and not simply in racing cars. The Club very much wants to play its part in nurturing talent across the board in order to ensure that British drivers remain at the fore, both nationally and internationally, in years to come. In addition to access to the Club and the opportunities for networking with the Members, the SuperStars will receive direct assistance with all aspects of professional motor sport. This will include help with physical and mental training, career guidance, team building skills, sponsorship advice, media and sales training, PR and marketing, motor sport seminars and workshops with BRDC Members. They will also gain significant benefit of media coverage that the BRDC SuperStars programme itself generates. Indeed, the Club’s endorsement of each young driver’s status as one of the very brightest prospects in motor sport is undoubted but hard to put a value on. The SuperStars programme helps to strengthen links between young drivers and the Club, as well as reinforcing the relevance of the BRDC to the wider motor sport community. I look forward to a successful and helpful year with the 2013 BRDC SuperStars drivers.
