SEASON 2 - EPISODE 127 - Adrien Brody - Actor Actor Adrien Brody (THE BRUTALIST, SUMMER OF SAM, THE PIANIST) joins us in this episode of the Team Deakins Podcast. We worked with Adrien on THE VILLAGE, and it was great catching up with him. Early in our sprawling conversation about his career and his craft, we discuss what he learned as a young actor working with directors of great caliber—from Juan José Campanella (Season 2, Episode 80) to Spike Lee and Ken Loach—that led to his lauded performance in THE PIANIST. Later in our discussion of THE BRUTALIST, Adrien reflects on his collaboration with director Brady Corbet and shares what his first concern as a performer was when told the film would be shot on loud VistaVision cameras, and Adrien reveals the personal family history that informed his moving performance and shares how he and his fellow filmmakers pulled the film off with relatively limited resources. Towards the end our conversation, we also consider actors' and cinematographers' reliance on others to reach creative fulfillment, and we ask Adrien if he thinks it's possible to learn how to act. Plus, Adrien explains how to jury-rig a polaroid camera battery into a makeshift hand warmer. - This episode is sponsored by Aputure

Spike Lee's Summer of Sam should have been the perfect 1999 movie. After Lee's breakthrough 1989 film Do the Right Thing, he was on a roll in the 90s, giving us 1990s' Mo Better Blues, 1991's Jungle Fever, 1992's Malcolm X, 1994's Crooklyn, 1995's Clockers, 1996's Get on the Bus, and 1998's He Got Game. And so a gritty, Scorsese-esque New York crime like Summer of Sam headlined by the rising star Brody and Leguizamo at his most popular seemed like a no-brainer. And maybe because its nearly two and a half hour run time just didn't appeal to audiences in the middle of summer, for some reason SoS (which served as a near-perfect metaphor for the anxiety of pre-Y2K America) just never caught on with critics or at the box office. But has our equally volatile (and true crime obsessed) 2024 America made the film newly relevant? And where does it stand in Spike Lee's oeuvre? To discuss, John welcomed back film and culture writer and frequent guest Julia Sirmons to the show.

Show Notes Episode 370-371 Mega-Mix The Summer of Sam Redux This week Host Dave Bledsoe takes a “well deserved” rest after “working so hard” on the Summer Series. (All he did was show up in the studio and slur drunkenly into a microphone.) So while he “rests” (If by resting you mean squats in a dimly lit dive bar arguing with the bartender over how many rounds he's ordered). So while he “refreshes” we offer a megamix of two episodes we first ran in 2022 as a part of that year's Summer Series. It is all about the Summer of Sam! So slip on your Boogie Shoes, snug up those bell bottoms and unbutton your flare collared shirt down the navel and get ready to dance! In this episode of our ongoing 2024 Spike Lee project, we are diving deep into the 1999 Summer of Sam. Over the course of our conversation you will hear us speculate as to why Spike Lee chose to make this movie in particular, how it relates to his ongoing interests and whether it pauses the filmmaker's streak of activist black cinema, or maybe if it continues it by assuming a different perspective. We also talk about Adrien Brody's accent, Son of Sam as a societal lightning rod, talking dogs and the whether the movie itself is a tacit acknowledgment that America as Lee saw it was going through an identity crisis. In honor of its upcoming 25th anniversary (as well as a chance meeting between the director and guest Matt Belenky), we're unlocking our episode on Spike Lee's 'Summer of Sam'. Here's what we had to say about this monumental work back in the summer of 2022: Writer Matt Belenky joins us from New York in the midst of a heat wave to discuss Spike Lee's 'Summer of Sam', an exuberant survey of Outer Boroughs New York in the late 1970s as well as a chilling study of working class anxiety, paranoia, and scapegoating of the Other. We discuss the many controversies surrounding the film's release (a common through line with Lee's films), the impeccable performances of the oft-undersung leads - including career-best work from John Leguizamo and Mira Sorvino, and the textured analysis of a politically tumultuos era that bears more than a few similarities to the Summer of 1999 in which the film was released. It's been a great, old fashioned, hot sand feet burning, car seatbelt buckle branding summer! And as we desperately need him this year, we're hoping it's also the Summer of Sam. Time for the Restump Podcast return.January and we're talking footy? It's a tad confusing but we won the bat flip, we've elected to serve and we'll kick with the wind, to the right of screen. It feels a bit Twelfth Man-ish… “Pakistan are going to kick off? What ‘effin' game are we playing here?”Like most years, the external expectations are high. However, there seems to be a lot of doom and gloom about Freo's prospects this year obviously based on season 2023. Happy to say we don't share that sentiment. Sure, the current few injuries to Luke Ryan, Sammy Switkowski and Brennan Cox aren't ideal but they don't appear overly serious. In this late January return podcast, we ask where will the necessary improvement come from this year? Are there any players under serious pressure? Is coach JL under the pump or is it the trashy traditional media going earlier than usual? The Chief is not suggesting any serial killer accusation vibes but wants to talk the Summer of Sam Switkowski. 27 years of age, just 68 games over 6 years. We desperately need not only a full season out of him, but a career best one as well. After successfully seeing David Mundy off, attempting to trade Sonny to the Suns and calling for Fyfe's finale …. does Jojo have concerns over the Captain's future? There's a groundswell of support building for the return of a fit Matthew Taberner and when you take a step back and look at it from different angles, you can see the reasons why. Is Fyfe going to beat the old man battered and bruised body odds and hold together? The old dog still has his tricks if the arthritic body allows him to perform them.Did Joel Hamling two-face us? Full of gratitude for Freo on his way out but amongst the hi-brow Sydney sect he suddenly decided he was disrespected. Despite Mrs Corbet keeping the boys well fed with homemade ‘yoyo melting moments,' they are back in better shape than this time 12 months ago, they're a year older and they've got another season and pre-season under their belts. So as far as we're currently concerned…. off with your heads, you defeatist doom-mongers! We're up, we're arked up, revved up, probably a little too hyped up… possibly overstepping the mark and giving away free hits, but offloading the nervous and excited energies is what pre-pre-season is for. So much to discuss so join us for the first Restump Podcast episode for 2024. Roll up your blinds and pull back your curtains because the premiership window is only just starting to open! East Coast Carnage wraps up the second half of another true crime pairing as the True Crime Movie Time Summer Film Festival continues its exploration of the Son of Sam killings. Spike Lee is one of our most skillful and accomplished filmmakers. He's also no stranger to controversy. But does his film SUMMER OF SAM inspire the wrong controversy and for all the wrong reasons? Forget David Berkworitz or the investigation into his hideous murders. This film uses its all-star cast and extensive running time to focus exclusively on the vigilantism and fear the Son of Sam killings inspired in the community and not the investigation. Does it work? Christopher and Eric have many opinions on the matter.

You can actually feel the heat in this film. It instantly transports you into this neighborhood all taking place during the Son of Sam murders in 1970s New York City. Immediately there were similarities to the DC sniper case that we both lived through that we touched on. Spike Lee's film perfectly captured the paranoia and utter fear that gripped the whole city, but within this specific community. True Leguizamo fan and genius funny person, Jude Perl, joins us this week to chat about "Summer of Sam" - Jude's favourite Legz movie!"Summer of Sam" is a 1999 drama/thriller directed by Spike Lee. The film is set in New York in 1977 - right in the middle of a sexual revolution. New York is haunted by a deranged serial killer that is infamously known as Son Of Sam. Vinny (play by John Leguizamo) is an Italian/American hairdresser that has the misfortune of seeing some of the serial killer's victims after narrowly escaping the killer himself. Vinny and his mates (along with the entire neighbourhood) become deeply invested in finding Son Of Sam... but also manage to find plenty of time to do lots of drugs and have lots of sex with various female character actors from the 90s. Show Notes Episode 371: “The Dog's Name Was Harvey” Pt 2 of the Summer of Sam This week Host Dave Bledsoe decides to spend a little time at the Dog Park, which is a very disreputable strip club in Bayonne New Jersey where hopefully they haven't heard of him. (They didn't extend him credit.) On the show this week we wrap up the Summer of Sam with part two, the arrest, confession and trial of David Berkowitz. Then we get to the good stuff about the Devil! (Satan insists he would NEVER hang out with a loser like Berkowitz.) Along the way we learn why cops give people tickets when they would rather be watching porn. (Everybody has a boss!) Then we dive right into how the Summer Sam finally ended because one woman nagged the cops into actually doing their damn jobs! (That is usually how that happens.) We learn about David's motivations for killing (girls didn't like him) and how a dog named Harvey told him to kill. (Harvey insists he would never hang out with a loser like Berkowitz.) We take you through the bullshit stories that Berkowitz spun to get out of the death penalty that NO ONE BELIEVED. (Except for this one guy named Maury.) Then we take you down the dark path of conspiracy theory that Maury Terry took and leave you just as disappointed as Maury was in the end. Our Sponsor this week is David's Doggie Day Care, where the dogs tell US what to do! Celluloid Pudding: Movies. Film. Discussions. Laughter. History. Carrying on.
This 1999 Spike Lee film features a heatwave in New York in 1977, rolling blackouts, a deranged serial killer on the loose, disco & punk rock, orgies, infidelities, vigilantes, the Mob...and oh so much more! Did Spike Lee manage to cover all of those bases? Oh yes. Mad respect for Professor Lee. Please join us, but also please check out the film for yourself. Here is a terrific retrospective and dialogue Elvis Mitchel conducted with Spike Lee: https://youtu.be/pAkER9YPjaQ. Here's a frank episode of Charlie Rose with Mira Sorvino and John Leguizamo. They are enchantingly down to earth. https://charlierose.com/videos/9425.

Show Notes Episode 370: The Wicked King Wicker Part 1 of the Summer of Sam This week Host Dave Bledsoe decided to take his beloved out to a popular make out spot for a little heavy petting. (Meaning he is sitting in the park alone drinking Jameson out of a brown paper bag, again.) On the show this week, we continue our series about NYC in the 1970's with part one of The Summer of Sam! Along the way we discover that all the adults in Dave's young life thought it was hilarious the way he freaked out over people getting violently killed in movies. (He peed himself!!) Then we dive right into the murders committed by one David Berkowitz, AKA Beelzebub, AKA The Wicked King Wicker, AKA The Chubby Behemoth. You know him best as The Son of Sam! From his first kill in the Bronx to the last in Brooklyn we give you the Just the Facts. (The good stuff comes next week in part two!) Our Sponsor this week is Dave, do you have a Dave in your life? If you do, you know how great Dave's are, unlike David's who SUCK! We open the show with the women of New York telling it like it is and close with Amir Darzi who just wants to be your everything! This week we dip into some movies with serial killers in them. Real and fake. First off with Manhunter (1986) which is taken from the Hannibal Lecter book series better known as Red Dragon. Only long before Anthony Hopkins came along to play the part. Then we dip into Summer Of Sam (1999) a movie by Spike Lee about the Son of Sam or rather the neighborhoods that were affected by the actual killer back in the day. We talk about both movies and why we like or dislike them. It was a fun episode to talk about for a change. Join us! Between 1976 and 1977, “The .44 caliber Killer” as he was known in the press, murdered six people and injured seven more in shootings across the Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn. He targeted young women and young couples, including, most famously, couples parked in cars at night and left cryptic messages, taunting the police and calling himself the “Son of Sam”.23 years later, Director Spike Lee produced the crime thriller “Summer of Sam”, chronicaling the effects of a group of residents in New York, living through the killer's reign of terror. On this episode we'll take a look at the 1999 film, ‘Summer of Sam'' directed by Spike Lee, starring John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody, and Mira Sorvino as well as the year-long murder spree and bizare investigation that inspired it.Sex, drugs, disco, a record-setting heat wave, 24 hour blackout, and a city terrorized by a gun toting serial killer who claimed to take orders from his neighbor's dog. This is the story of the notorious serial killer David Berkowitz, known as the Son of Sam, and the Spike Lee joint he inspired.
