Try putting together a guy's/girl's night when no on has a phone. Where do you meet, when, where? Imagine trying to move thousands of troops and resources around without constant communication. Well that whole thing had been figured out way before WW2. But what do you do when that life line of communication starts to work against you because your enemy is listening in and knows everything you're doing. The Pacific Theater was basically a series of islands being fought over at different times. Coded communication from ships to shore, and on the battlefield were being intercepted by the Japanese and decoded almost as fast as the codes could be created. One code went the entire war never being broken. The Navajo Code. The Navajo soldiers at the center to our episode were men that during childhood in white-run Indian schools were punished for using their native language. We pretty much did everything we could to kill their culture. Well once WW2 rolled around a man with knowledge of the Navajo Language recommended it to the U.S. Marine Corp due to its insane complexity, small number of people fluent, and the fact it didn't have written counterpart that made it indecipherable to the Japanese. Find out about the Navajo men who created the code and fought on the front lines providing the communications that helped win the war in the Pacific. This week we watched the WWII film Windtalkers, starring Nic Cage and Adam Beach. "Marine Joe Enders (Nicolas Cage) is assigned to protect Ben Yahzee (Adam Beach) -- a Navajo code talker, the Marines' new secret weapon. Enders' orders are to protect his code talker, but if Yahzee should fall into enemy hands, he's to protect the code at all costs. Against the backdrop of the horrific Battle of Saipan, when capture is imminent, Enders is forced to make a decision: if he can't protect his fellow Marine, can he bring himself to kill him to protect the code?" (Synopsis from Rotten Tomatoes)

This week we're in the trenches with Nicolas Cage and the Navajo code talker operation, but James and Nick are trying to figure out which one of those phenomenons this movie is actually about. This week Jack and Jon are joined by a special guest as they review the 2002 film Windtalkers. Starring Adam Beach and Nicholas Cage, Windtalkers follows the story of Navajo code talkers in WWII.
Bust out your Big Dog Energy because this week we have 1999's Bringing Out The Dead about a burned out EMT and 2002's World War II epic, Windtalkers. Powerhouse casts in both movies but the real cherry on top is Ving Rhames with hair. Despite all the director and star power, these are two box office flops for Martin Scorsese and John Woo. But really, what kind of name is I.B. Bangin'? This is Cage Match.
Let's-a-go! IN SEARCH FOR THE LAST ACTION HEROES. Sayonara.

Can you hear that? It's the sound of Dave taking 2002's Windtalkers off his shelf. The guys discuss how John Woo seems to miss the fundamental story at the heart of the movie this could be and favours Nicolas Cage and traditional war movie tropes. Adam Beach is solid in what turns out to be less of a role than Phil would like. Dave enjoys some of the action sequences but finds the plot of the movie doesn't hold up to its running time.
The Film School Janitors are back in school, and they're going to Nic Cage University! Their goal is to watch and review every film Nicolas Cage has ever made... and will ever make! This week's assignment: WINDTALKERS Based on real-life incidents, this World War II film focuses on Nicolas Cage's character PTSD instead of the actual Navajo code talkers themselves. And it's also an action film. An at times gruesome one, but also at times unbelievable. Take a listen to see what else the Film School Janitors thought about the film.

This week we cover John Woo's 'Windtalkers' the big budget MGM-backed blockbuster that famously flopped at the box office being panned by critics at the time of release in 2002. Starring Nic Cage and Christian Slater as USMC sergeants tasked with looking after Navajo Codetalkers played by Adam Beach and Roger Willie, during the battle of Saipan in 1944. Despite its huge scale and attention to detail, the film fails to successfully tell the story of the bravery and sacrifice of the Navajo Codetalkers. In early 1942, the US Marine Corps began recruiting young Navajo men to serve as “codetalkers” who would transmit orders via radio using a code based on the Navajo language. The code was inscrutable to the Japanese, who were never able to crack it. John Woo's 2002 film Windtalkers tells a slightly fictionalized version of their story. As usual, James and Sean attempt to sort through the Hollywood embellishments to tell the history behind the movie.
