In this episode of Critical Reads, we will be discussing Unbound: My Story of Liberation and the Birth of the Me Too Movement by Tarana J. Burke. Here's a brief summary of the book courtesy of the author/publisher: "From the founder and activist behind one of the largest movements of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, the 'me too' movement, Tarana Burke debuts a powerful memoir about her own journey to saying those two simple yet infinitely powerful words―me too―and how she brought empathy back to an entire generation in one of the largest cultural events in American history. Tarana didn't always have the courage to say 'me too.' As a child, she reeled from her sexual assault, believing she was responsible. Unable to confess what she thought of as her own sins for fear of shattering her family, her soul split in two. One side was the bright, intellectually curious third-generation Bronxite steeped in Black literature and power, and the other was the bad, shame-ridden girl who thought of herself as a vile rule-breaker, not as a victim. She tucked one away, hidden behind a wall of pain and anger, which seemed to work...until it didn't. Tarana fought to reunite her fractured self, through organizing, pursuing justice, and finding community. In her debut memoir, she shares her extensive work supporting and empowering Black and brown girls, and the devastating realization that to truly help these girls she needed to help that scared, ashamed child still in her soul. She needed to stop running and confront what had happened to her, for Heaven and Diamond and the countless other young Black women for whom she cared. They gave her the courage to embrace her power. A power which in turn she shared with the entire world. Through these young Black and brown women, Tarana found that we can only offer empathy to others if we first offer it to ourselves. Unbound is the story of an inimitable woman's inner strength and perseverance, all in pursuit of bringing healing to her community and the world around her, but it is also a story of possibility, of empathy, of power, and of the leader we all have inside ourselves. In sharing her path toward healing and saying 'me too,' Tarana reaches out a hand to help us all on our own journeys." Nicolás Dumit Estévez Raful In Bed with the Tropicals, 2015, inaction Photo: Frances Pollitt / Courtesy of Nicolás Dumit Estévez In Bed with the Tropicals consisted of a five-hour stopover by a sleeping subject in Wave Hill's conservatory, NY. This dormant being rested uninterruptedly, side by side with the vast array of orchids, lichens, air plants and ferns that make up the lush greenhouse's collection. In this exercise, which relied on inaction, the cessation of the most visible movements on behalf of the sleeper were meant to put him on a par with the imperceptible activity generated by the plant world around him. In Bed with the Tropicals was meant to conjure images of hibernation, catalepsy, the Dormition of the Virgin, and the continuous interplay between life and death. It also signaled the urgent call for what deep ecology activist Joanna Macy refers to as the “greening of the self” or the eco-self; an awareness for one's inextricable interdependence with all living beings irrespective of the lesser status “humans” have assigned to them. They step into Rhina's everyday portal through the shopping district of Parkchester, reminiscent of the walk she would take to get to the train when she lived there with her Mother—through improvisational ritual choreography that launches near the fountain of Parkchester and processes through Metropolitan Avenue. Mantras, colors, and drum beats are all part of the portal through which Rhina skillfully takes the group: a magical field. She eventually leads all involved out into the day-to-day buzz of the City to enjoy the echo of any transformations experienced during the action. This action is part of Performing the Bronx. Performing the Bronx is an expansion of Nicolás's on-going efforts to generate work with and within different communities in the Bronx. UFO sightings across the city are up 31% from last year — 46, compared with 35 — and an eye-popping 283% from 2018's measly dozen, according to the National UFO Reporting Center. Brooklyn is tops in tin-foil hatters, with 12 close encounters. Not far behind are Manhattan with 11 and Queens with 10. Staten Islanders claim just eight — despite the borough's rep for not social distancing. The Bronx is even more grounded, chalking up a mere five. Two of the more memorable intergalactic incidents happened in the summertime, on Staten Island and in the Bronx. In the wee hours of July 21, an Islander spotted — and stared at — at an “oval” aircraft that “looked and sounded like a helicopter. Then, the mysterious flying machine “sent a surge of heat/radiation through my body!” The Islander “honestly thought it was the government putting something into the air with everything going on during these times and I thought I would wake up and find it all over the news or on Instagram.” Late on June 8, a Bronxite watched 30 objects “flying in a perfect line, in perfect synchronicity” that “looked like a bunch of moving stars.” The observer insisted, “I don't drink, or take any drugs whatsoever. I'm not a UFO conspiracy theorist.” An eerie episode can happen any time, anywhere. On the night of Sept. 15, a Brooklynite stuck his head “out the bathroom window of my 2nd floor home” and saw “orange/metallic” orbs “standing still over the Canarsie/Jamaica Bay area.” Army officer's secret journal could offer new clues about the UFO crash in Roswell in 1947 Link: https://www.livescience.com/roswell-the-first-witness-history-channel.html Recently, Marcel's family revealed that he had kept a diary from that period that might contain clues about the crash, sparking a new investigation by the History Channel in "Roswell: The First Witness," part of the network's "History's Greatest Mysteries" series. "The government claimed they had recovered a UFO — they had a press release about it," said Ben Smith, a former CIA operative and the show's lead investigator. "No other government in the world has said 'We have a spacecraft,' and then the next day there's another press release that says, 'Never mind, it was just a weather balloon'," Smith told Live Science. The show revisits the Roswell crash site, incorporating aerial surveys and mapping, and using multispectral imaging to detect micro-depressions in the ground that could indicate where debris landed, Smith said. But the central component of the new inquiry is a diary, which Marcel supposedly kept during the time of the Roswell crash, and which is now in the possession of his grandchildren. Decades after the event, Marcel told an interviewer that he believed the object that crashed in the New Mexico desert had extraterrestrial origins, Time reported in 1997. Analysis of the diary — and translation of its cryptic language — could reveal coded messages that Marcel wrote about the crash at the time that it happened, Smith said. Pics: Leaked government photos reveal bizarre UFO sighting Link: https://in.news.yahoo.com/leaked-government-photos-reveal-bizarre-ufo-sighting-132912231.html The circulation of a leaked photo appearing to show a motionless unidentified flying object, or UFO, has sent military buffs and alien hunters into overdrive. The image had reportedly been shared around by US defence personnel before making its way into the media this month. The picture is said to date back to 2018 and was published by journalist Tim McMillian in The Debrief. It shows what the US government calls Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAP) appearing near a US fighter pilot while flying his jet off the country's east coast. “The Department of Defense established the UAPTF (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force) to improve its understanding of, and gain insight into, the nature and origins of UAPs,” the US government said in a press release at the time. Now, astrobiologists like Dr Douglas Vakoch use something called METI (messaging extraterrestrial intelligence) to send signals to outer space. It contrasts with the orthodox SETI (searching for extraterrestrial life) which scientists used to passively scour the universe for our distant galactic cousins. SETI now allows the scientific community to actively force its hand into space, calling for any number of potential intelligent life forms to respond. A thought that has disturbed many, researchers like Dr Vackoch relish the idea that one day they might hear something back. So confident is Dr Vakoch and his team at METI in California that he believes there is a "really good chance" aliens will reply. It is, he told BBC Science Focus Magazine, a matter of being patient. He said: "I think there's a really good chance that it will work if we're patient. "And I think that's the critical thing." Despite this, he conceded: "Am I holding my breath in 2042 we're going to get a reply back from Luyten's Star that we pinged in 2017? No. "I mean, I'm going to be listening. I don't think there's a good chance. "But if we repeat that experiment 100 times or a 1,000 times or one million times, then I think we have a realistic chance." She also sits on the Boards of the Nathan Cummings Foundation, Color of Change, and Black Girls Rock, Inc. Focusing on issues relating to race in America, mass media, structural inequality, popular culture, gender and sexuality and art and social justice, Rose engages widely in scholarly and popular audience settings, and now also on The Tight Rope podcast.   Alexandria Ocasio-CortezServing the 14th district of New York in the Bronx and Queens, U.S. Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez touts a 100% People-Funded Democratic Socialism platform. She is an educator, organizer, service worker with a deep understanding of income inequality. As a third-generation Bronxite, AOC believes in combating systemic problems by fighting for systemic solutions, like Medicare for all, federal jobs guarantee, the end to mass incarceration, and the Green New Deal. She attended Boston University and previously worked as Educational Director with National Hispanic Institute where she helped Americans, DREAMers, and undocumented youth in community leadership and college readiness. AOC serves working-class people over corporate interests and advocates for social, racial, economic, and environmental justice.Insight from this episode:Strategies on not being “locked in” while on lockdown. How to respond and intervene in systems that are impoverished of empathy and compassion. Behind-the-scenes look at Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s meteoric rise in politics, including the impact of her education, time abroad in West Africa, and close relationship with her father. How to remain true to your morals, values, politics, and spirituality when faced with pressures to conform or be reduced down to a niche. Benefits of the discipline of non-attachment to work, money, social acceptance, and ego. Details on what “defunding the police” really means to Dr. West and Professor Rose. Quotes from the show:“I am one point that is a result of waves of generational inertia.” –Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez The Tight Rope Episode #7“You can’t let your identity be subsumed with this superficial political identity of red or blue or this tribe. [It’s] not what do you want to be but how do you want to be? ...People always try to analyze my actions in a strictly political context… I was already here. I didn’t know this was a political way of being. I just thought it was a moral way of being.” –Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez The Tight Rope Episode #7On her time in Niger: “That level of enjoyment just does not exist in American life. [Enjoying tea with friends] is something people do on a Friday night, maybe once a week, if they aren’t exhausted by work. But this is a way of life in Niger… that interaction was the sun around which life revolved. It’s our fellowship and connection to one another.” –Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez The Tight Rope Episode #7On switching majors from Pre-Med to Economics: “What you are treating and what you are healing is a result of systematic outcomes. And I knew that people would continue to be sick if our systems continued to be sick.” –Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez The Tight Rope Episode #7“The interesting thing about economics is that there may be an equation, but the real quest is discovering the story that has led to a number.” –Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez The Tight Rope Episode #7“In the tradition of my parents, I never was like, “I’m a Democrat with a capital D. If it’s got a blue sticker, I’m going to be for that.” I always grew up with this idea that you need to have an independent analysis of each and every individual and look at things in context.” –Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez The Tight Rope Episode #7“Politics ultimately is about the scaffolding of our relationships to each other. And the reason our politics are so broken right now is because our relationships to one another as a society are really deeply broken.” –Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez The Tight Rope Episode #7“I cannot be attached to keeping my seat as a member of Congress if I’m going to do my job because [my mission] is not to be the Congresswoman of New York’s 14th district. My mission is to advance principles of a better world and to advance a better world.” –Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez The Tight Rope Episode #7“How has AOC gotten inside of [the system]? People are so hungry and thirsty for something deeper than the legalized bribery and normalized corruption.” –Dr. Cornel West The Tight Rope Episode #7On being intentionally vulnerable on social media: “I needed to break the mythology of perfection in people who hold power.” –Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez The Tight Rope Episode #7“The police have already been thoroughly been defunded in terms of the police that are supposed to regulate Wall Street… they are as weak as pre-sweetened Kool-Aid.” –Dr. Cornel West The Tight Rope Episode #7“That hyper funding of police ended money for social workers and mental health facilities and drug treatment centers… a complete gutting of the safety nets that allowed people to have problems. And we’re interested in helping solve them. We’re not interested in making every response a punitive punishment, profitable response for others… to defund is to invest in communities.” –Tricia Rose The Tight Rope Episode #7  Stay Connected:Cornel WestWebsite: www.cornelwest.comTwitter: @CornelWestFacebook: Dr. Cornel West - HomeInstagram: @BrotherCornelWest Linktree: Cornel West  Tricia RoseWebsite: www.triciarose.comLinkedIn: Tricia RoseTwitter: @ProfTriciaRoseFacebook: Tricia RoseInstagram: @ProfTriciaRoseYoutube: Professor Tricia Rose  Alexandria Ocasio-CortezWebsite: www.ocasiocortez.comGovernment Website: ocasio-cortez.house.gov/contactTwitter: @AOCFacebook: Alexandria Ocasio-CortezInstagram: @AOC and @RepAOC The Tight RopeWebsite: www.thetightropepodcast.comInstagram: @thetightropepodTwitter: @thetightropepodFacebook: The Tight Rope Pod This episode was produced and managed by Spkerbox Media in collaboration with Podcast Laundry.

Advocates of Medicare for All are burying the lead, did you know it includes dental coverage? New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera comes to the front of the class to breakdown the detailed aspects of the widely supported policy and discuss how states can adopt universal healthcare coverage. There are a lot of terms thrown around in the debate over healthcare, here are a few; Universal Coverage: The ultimate goal is for everyone to have health insurance. Single-Payer: A category of healthcare coverage in which the government provides insurance to everyone and pays the bills. Public Option: A government run insurance plan is offered in addition to private health insurance plans. Medicare for All: One of many policy proposals to achieve universal coverage that would create a national health insurance program in which everyone is covered and the government is the single payer. Our Guest: @NYSenatorRivera New York State Senator Gustavo Rivera was born in Santurce, Puerto Rico. In 1998, Gustavo graduated from the University of Puerto Rico and moved to New York to begin a doctoral program in political science at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York. A proud Bronxite, he has lived in Kingsbridge Heights for almost 20 years. He has represented the 33rd Senate District in the Bronx since November of 2010. The 33rd Senate District includes the neighborhoods of Kingsbridge Heights, East Tremont, Crotona Park, Fordham, Mount Hope, Belmont, Van Nest, Claremont, and Morris Park. Since taking office, Senator Rivera has focused his efforts on addressing issues of health inequity both legislatively and on the ground. In 2011, Senator Rivera launched the Bronx CAN (Changing Attitudes Now) Health Initiative. The goal of this community oriented health initiative is not only to encourage Bronx residents to develop healthy behaviors, but to shape policies that will help tear down some of the institutional barriers that stand in the way of Bronxites having a healthier lifestyle. Set in the 1930s, Jesse Eisenberg stars as Bobby Dorfman, a young Bronxite and aspiring writer who calls on his distant uncle Phil to hook him up with a job in his top-flight talent agency in Hollywood. Shortly after relocating, Phil sends hisassistant, the decidedly glamour-averse Vonnie, to show his young nephew around the town, and the two soon hit it off as friends. However, friendship turns to feelings for Bobby, but she says she's seeing someone else, though Bobby doesn't know that her beau is, in fact, married uncle Phil. However, when Phil looks like he can't quite pull the trigger and leave his wife for Vonnie once and for all, Bobby gets his chance at burgeoning love, though things get far more complicated when all of the players begin putting the pieces of the love triangle's thorny entanglements together.
