This week, Jason is joined by former Navy Seal, entrepreneur, New York Times bestselling author, speaker, and podcast host, Robert J. O'Neill! Robert is one of the most highly decorated combat veterans of our time. He served at Seal Team two, Seal Team four, and eight years at the legendary Seal Team six. Having taken part in leading over 400 combat missions around the world, he has decorated 53 times with honors. More notably, Robert took part in the rescue operation Red Wings, which extracted the lone survivor Marcus Latrell. He was the lead jumper for the rescue operation that saved Captain Richard Phillips and some from the Somali Pirates, and he was a team leader for Operation Neptune Spear, the mission to kill Osama Bin Laden.  In this powerful episode, Robert shares how mastering free throws opened his eyes to the power of muscle memory and the importance of setting both short- and long-term goals. He discusses how a breakup unexpectedly led him to enlist in the Navy, the rigorous journey to becoming a Navy SEAL—including the numbers behind selection, the grueling Hell Week, and the intense “drown-proofing” training designed to teach calm under pressure. Robert reflects on the critical need for adaptability, managing stress, and keeping things simple under extreme conditions. He opens up about the long-term emotional processing of his time on the SEAL team, takes us behind the scenes of the mission to find Osama Bin Laden, and shares the mindset that fueled that operation. Robert also discusses the aftermath of becoming publicly known as the man who killed Bin Laden, the financial realities faced by many in the military, and his efforts to support veterans through new initiatives. Finally, he explores the concept of the butterfly effect—and shares his perspective on the attempted assassination of Donald Trump. Robert reveals all this and so much more in another episode you can't afford to miss! (1:58) • You do realize there's a thing called old man strength? (5:53) • [Rob O'Neil] I have a podcast as well, called “The Operator.” We're called The Operator because if you're doing anything, you're an operator. (6:18) • Having a big man to kick your ass and teach you wind a bobbin; you realize there is skill here. (9:59) • When people quit BUDS, it's not because “this is hard”. [It's because] I'm tired of the broken foot; I'm tire of the shin splints; I'm tire of my dislocated shoulder; I'm tired. 21:20) • In BUDS, one of the biggest problems is eating too much. Like I want 5 cheeseburgers, but we have a 4-mile run afterwards. (26:35) • [Rob] and for everyone that doesn't know, can you explain what a SDV is? [Marcus] Imagine a mini submarine and shrink it down. The difference is that a submarine is dry inside, and the SDV is completely full of water. (37:40) • Listen to Marcus discuss the details of being in an SDV for 8 hours. (38:52) • [Marcus] Talk about ultimate torture - If you have a deep freeze in your garage, fill that sucker full of water, crawl in there and sit down for 8 hours. (38:53) • The first time I got in there, I was terrified. (43:49) • [Marcus] There's stuff that happens to us out there. Sometimes safety gets in the way of it. (58:40) • [After falling down the mountain during Operation Red Wings] I could hear that stream running. I've got to get me water, but I kept thinking I can't drink out of it, because my buddies are in it. (79:27) • If you want to make God laugh, tell Him what your plan is. (90:24) • [Marcus] Bro, when you saw that son of a bitch's face [Osama Bin Laden], what was the first thing you saw? [Rob O'Neal] I saw his nose. He was skinny, wearing white – tall. (93:41) • My nickname was “Nisro” (Navy SEAL Rob O'Neal). When they asked “Who got him?” They go “Nisro,” and they said “Fuck! Were never gonna hear the end of it.” (95:38) Socials: -  IG: mchooyah - Host of The Operator Podcast - IG: team_neverquit , marcusluttrell , melanieluttrell , huntero13 -  https://www.patreon.com/teamneverquit Sponsors:    - Navyfederal.org           - GoodRX.com/TNQ   -  kalshi.com/TNQ    - PXG.com/TNQ   -  joinbilt.com/TNQ    - Tonal.com [TNQ]   - greenlight.com/TNQ   - PDSDebt.com/TNQ   - drinkAG1.com/TNQ    - ghostbed.com/TNQ [TNQ]   - Shadyrays.com [TNQ]   - qualialife.com/TNQ [TNQ]   - Hims.com/TNQ   - Shopify.com/TNQ   - Aura.com/TNQ   - Moink.com/TNQ   - Policygenius.com   - TAKELEAN.com [TNQ]   - usejoymode.com [TNQ]   - Shhtape.com [TNQ]   - mackweldon.com/utm_source=streaming&utm_medium=podcast&utm_campaign=podcastlaunch&utm_content=TNQutm_term=TNQ

Admiral McRaven is a four-star admiral who oversaw the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden; his forces were responsible for the capture of Saddam Hussein; and he also led the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, who was held hostage by Somali pirates (which became the basis for the blockbuster movie, Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks). As commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, Admiral McRaven led a force of 72,000 men and women and was responsible for conducting counter-terrorism operations worldwide. After his military career, he served as chancellor of the University of Texas System, overseeing 14 institutions, 220,000 students, 20,000 faculty and more than 80,000 health care professionals, researchers, and staff. In 2014, he gave a commencement speech at the University of Texas that went viral, titled, “If You Want To Change The World, Start Off By Making Your Bed.”   He is also the author of several books, including Sea Stories: My Life in Special Operations and the New York Times Bestseller, Make Your Bed. In this episode we discuss the following: When Admiral McRaven asked his Master Chief how to earn the respect of the soldiers, he responded: “Work hard. Come early. Stay late. Work on the weekends.” You don't have to be the most talented to succeed. But regardless of talent, everyone can work hard. You will earn the respect of others if they know you are working hard on their behalf. Know your business. As a Navy SEAL that meant knowing all about weapons, diving, and demolition. It also meant knowing the details of the playbook. For example, if you're in an ambush, first guy goes left, second guy goes right. When Admiral McRaven's solider accidentally blew off the leg of his colleague, the Master Chief wanted to go relatively easy on the solider. But Admiral McRaven believed they needed to “throw the book at him.” And through the tough love of accountability, the solider bounced back and became Sailor of the Year. How do you gain respect of those you lead? Work hard and be a good person. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. When I asked Admiral McRaven, “Did you ever get scared?” he laughed out loud: “Yeah, of course. You're scared all the time.” But he was able to fall back on his training and barricade his fears to help him get through countless life-threatening situations.   Connect on Social Media: X: https://twitter.com/nate_meikle Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/@MeiklesnDimes LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natemeikle/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nate_meikle/

Den här gången inte med en galen sektledare, utan med den colombianska militären på jakt efter fyra försvunna barn. Det finns också shamaner och ayahuasca. Åk med! Piracy, Kidnapping, & The Most Famous Case of the Past 20 Years: A Discussion of the Captain Phillips Case I was recently a guest on the “Great Trials” podcast. Great Trials is a wonderful podcast hosted by Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey in which they discuss in details some of the most famous trials in the country. In this episode, we delve into the infamous Captain Phillips case. When the U.S. merchant ship the Maersk Alabama was hijacked by armed Somali pirates, it made worldwide news. When American Navy Seals rescued the crew, that also made national news. And when Tom Hanks made a movie about Captain Richard Phillips, the Hollywood publicity machine ensured that the situation was broadcast all over the world for years. Brian Beckcom and his law firm, VB Attorneys, uncovered the real story of Captain Phillips, including reckless conduct, negligent orders, and disregarding the directives of the United States Government and other Western powers. This is the true story of Captain Phillips, told by Brian Beckcom, the lawyer who represented the crew against Captain Phillips and the negligent shipping company, the lawyer who ultimately forced the companies to settle with his clients after years of denying any responsibility.  And now I give you, the true story of the Maersk Alabama, told by the lawyer who won the case.

Admiral McRaven was the commander of U.S. Special Operations Command during which time he led a force of 69,000 men and women and was responsible for conducting counter-terrorism operations worldwide. McRaven also is a recognized national authority on U.S. foreign policy and has advised presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and other U.S. leaders on defense issues. Served as the primary author of the President's first National Strategy for Combating Terrorism Drafted and was the primary author of the National Security Presidential Directive-12 (U.S. Hostage Policy) Drafted the counter-terrorism policy for President George W. Bush's National Security Strategy McRaven's military legacy goes beyond strategy and warfare. As commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, McRaven spearheaded the creation of the Preservation of the Force & Family initiative to ensure the mental, spiritual and physical well-being of those who serve, as well as their families. His wife, Georgeann, has dedicated much of her career to playing a leadership role with military families and wounded warriors. In Sea Stories, which begins in the early 1960' in France, where Allied officers and their wives gathered to have drinks and tell stories about their adventures during World War II -- is where Admiral McRaven learned from the greatest generation. Sea Stories is an in-depth look back on one man's incredible life, where he went to BUDS to become a Navy Seal, to working in the Middle East, to being injured in a parachuting accident, and becoming a very important piece in the anti-terrorism agenda after 9/11. Admiral McRAven played a major part in American military history, having been involved in some of the most famous missions in recent memory, including the capture of Saddam Hussein, the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, and the raid to kill Osama bin Laden. Instead of highlighting specific adventures and operations that Admiral McRaven was a part of, I am going to read the last chapter of the book, titled The Final Salute. This chapter summarizes so much goodness and honor not only as a high ranking officer in the US Military, but what a man can do when he is driven by values that were instilled in him as a child. In this episode, we welcome Robert O'Neill to the show. He is a retired Navy SEAL that deployed more than a dozen times and took part in over 400 missions across four different theaters of war. During his career, he was a member of SEAL Teams TWO, FOUR, and the legendary Development Group, aka DEVGRU, aka SEAL Team SIX. He was part of many well-known missions including the mission to rescue Marcus Lutrell, the Lone Survivor from Operation Red Wings, and the mission that saved Captain Richard Phillips after he was kidnapped by Somali pirates in 2009. Robert is best known for his participation in one of the most famous ops in US Military history called “Neptune's Spear” which took place on May 2nd, 2011 at a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan. On that mission, he fired the shots that killed Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda that carried out the 9/11 terrorist attacks. After he retired, he wrote a New York Times bestseller about his life and military experience in 2017 called The Operator: Firing the Shots that Killed Osama bin Laden and My Years as a SEAL Team Warrior. He's also the co-author of a new book out this week called The Way Forward: Master Life's Toughest Battles and Create Your Lasting Legacy, with co-author and retired United States Marine and Medal of Honor recipient, Dakota Meyer. In this interview, we discuss the funny story about how he ended up as a SEAL instead of a Marine, how SEALs are selected to become a member of SEAL Team SIX, what he was doing during the mission to save Captain Phillips, all of the information leading up to the bin Laden raid, what it was like killing the leader of al-Qaeda, how that mission changed his relationships with many of his SEAL brothers, what he thinks about the “code of silence” for Special Operators, his personal faith, how he feels about all of the killing he's done, the one killing that haunts him most, and much more. About the Head of the Snake Series  In May of 2011, Mark Owen crossed the Afghanistan-Pakistan border on a mission to capture/kill Osama bin Laden, the leader of al-Qaeda - to decapitate “The Head of the Snake.”    But that night in Abbottabad, Pakistan is just a part of Mark's story. In this special four-part series of Danger Close, Jack sits down for an extended interview with Mark to discuss the story you haven't heard. Starting with Mark's childhood in a remote Alaskan community to his early days in the SEAL Teams to 9/11 and the sustained combat that followed to his selection and training for a team at the highest echelons of special operations, this is Mark Owen unfiltered, candid, and uncensored.  Mark would go on to take part in high-profile operations like the mission to rescue Captain Richard Phillips from Somali pirates and the search for Bowe Bergdahl.  He would later work his way up a stairwell in a compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan and into a hallway where the most wanted terrorist in the world waited…   But, as Jack and Mark discuss, the aftermath of the raid would not only change the public profile of Naval Special Warfare, it would also alter the course of Mark's life in ways he could have never anticipated.  IRONCLAD and SIG Sauer proudly present, The Head of the Snake: The Killing of UBL, a special Danger Close event.  Part 4: Aftermath  The days following the raid that killed Osama bin Laden were an exciting time for the American public, but for the men that were there the night he died things were taking a turn. In the final installment of The Head of the Snake series, we learn about why Mark's military career would soon come to an end, and how his decision to tell the public the story of the Bin Laden raid drew the ire of the Pentagon.  It's a fascinating look at the post-9/11 American military, issues within the Navy Special Warfare community, how the Defense Department deals with internal controversies, and more.  Mark Owen's books: No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama Bin Laden and No Hero: The Evolution of a Navy SEAL Sponsors: Today's episode is presented by SIG Sauer. That one’s a quick-reading little book on the ten lessons McRaven learned in his SEAL training that we can all apply to our modern lives. It was fantastic. I had a strong feeling this memoir on his “Life in Special Operations” would be just as good. It is. As per the back cover, “Admiral William H. McRaven is a part of American military history, having been involved in some of the most famous missions in recent memory, including the capture of Saddam Hussein, the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, and the raid to kill Osama bin Laden.” McRaven is a brilliant story teller with, as you can imagine, an incredible array of stories to tell. But that’s not why I loved this book so much. I loved it because reading it made me want to be a better human being. If you enjoy autobiographies and appreciate the military heroes who serve our country as much as I do, I think you’ll love the book as much as I did.

In The Queue - Film Conversations with Andrew and Phil

In 2009, the first pirate attack on an American cargo ship in 200 years took place.  The Mv MAERSK Alabama was boarded by armed Somalians who took Captain Richard Phillips hostage.  Director Paul Greengrass' tense adaptation of these circumstances is a relentless white-knuckler, managing to keep the audience in suspense even though the outcome is assured.  Tom Hanks is in top form as the heroic captain, a man who is constantly engaged in a battle of wits with his captors.  He is not an action movie hero Hollywood is used to feeding us.  Here is a man who is stripped of any physical ability to defend himself or his crew.  His attempts to outsmart the invading pirates do little other than buy him time.  But it is valiant of him to even try to save himself and his crew.  "Captain Phillips" is a portrait of courage as much as it is a topical thriller.  Barkhad Abdi burns up the screen in the pivotal role of the pirate leader.  The film is top-notch in every respect, and also nominated for Best Picture at this year's Oscars.
