Today I am sharing a poignant & heartfelt conversation I had with an amazing woman named Jessica Timmerman. She lost her brother to suicide & everything changed. Jessica & Zach were not a typical brother and sister.... losing both of their parents before they were 18, they became each other's whole family and also the very best friends. Zach died by suicide in 2022 while serving his country (he was 15 years in when he died) - leaving Jess to pick up the pieces and figure out how to live without him AND honor his amazing life.  This is a bold conversation with a brave lady & it's my honor to share it. "Jessica Timmerman is a married mom of three kids and a military mental health advocate, currently residing in Edmond, Oklahoma. Sergeant First Class Zachary M. Brown lost his life to suicide on Mother's Day 2022 while on active duty in Germany. He was Jessica's baby brother, a proud Infantryman, a combat veteran of both Iraq and Afghanistan, a devoted Dad with a huge heart and made an impact on so many. Zach BELIEVED in a life of service and Jessica intends to continue that code".Today, we talk about: There are programs to help -- like the Army's A.S.E. Program --but they come with very human limitations. How the military failed Zach in life and his family & memory in deathBeing Hope Growers! How siblings (& others) become disenfranchised grieversWhat she became a Death Doula (& what it is) but where she feels drawn to help now. Some of her favorite things about ZachFind Jess at INSTAGRAM - please follow her & support her efforts for change And look for me to add a link to her (currently being updated) website in the next month or so to my resource page. THANK YOU for listening to this episode. Admiral McRaven was the commander of U.S. Special Operations Command during which time he led a force of 69,000 men and women and was responsible for conducting counter-terrorism operations worldwide. McRaven also is a recognized national authority on U.S. foreign policy and has advised presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama and other U.S. leaders on defense issues. Served as the primary author of the President's first National Strategy for Combating Terrorism Drafted and was the primary author of the National Security Presidential Directive-12 (U.S. Hostage Policy) Drafted the counter-terrorism policy for President George W. Bush's National Security Strategy McRaven's military legacy goes beyond strategy and warfare. As commander of U.S. Special Operations Command, McRaven spearheaded the creation of the Preservation of the Force & Family initiative to ensure the mental, spiritual and physical well-being of those who serve, as well as their families. His wife, Georgeann, has dedicated much of her career to playing a leadership role with military families and wounded warriors. In Sea Stories, which begins in the early 1960' in France, where Allied officers and their wives gathered to have drinks and tell stories about their adventures during World War II -- is where Admiral McRaven learned from the greatest generation. Sea Stories is an in-depth look back on one man's incredible life, where he went to BUDS to become a Navy Seal, to working in the Middle East, to being injured in a parachuting accident, and becoming a very important piece in the anti-terrorism agenda after 9/11. Admiral McRAven played a major part in American military history, having been involved in some of the most famous missions in recent memory, including the capture of Saddam Hussein, the rescue of Captain Richard Phillips, and the raid to kill Osama bin Laden. Instead of highlighting specific adventures and operations that Admiral McRaven was a part of, I am going to read the last chapter of the book, titled The Final Salute. This chapter summarizes so much goodness and honor not only as a high ranking officer in the US Military, but what a man can do when he is driven by values that were instilled in him as a child. The story ended up being more than just about Beck, though, as it brought memories of the lives of the dead service members and their families to millions of people. The story was expanded into a book with the same title. That book was a finalist for the National Book Award in 2008. Sheeler made a name for himself as a reporter by writing feature obituaries about ordinary, everyday people. A collection of those stories can be found in Sheeler's book “Obit.” Sheeler never appeared on Gangrey: The Podcast, although many reporters talked about how they learned lessons from him and his work. He died unexpectedly on September 17. He was 53 years old. This episode remembers Sheeler through stories from a variety of people who knew him. In the introduction, Josh Roiland, an English and journalism professor at the University of North Carolina Wilmington talks about how Sheeler helped him out a couple years ago when he was struggling. Included in this episode: Part 1: In October 2019, host Matt Tullis interviewed Sheeler for a writing project he was working on. Tullis recorded that interview and found the audio file after Sheeler died. It's presented here. Part 2: In the days after Sheeler died, Ben Montgomery tweeted a story he's heard Sheeler tell about his middle name - Expedite. Montgomery tells that story. Part 3: Steve Knopper, a freelance writer of 25 years, worked with Sheeler in Boulter in the early 1990s. He also tweeted a remembrance, and tells the story of how he and Sheeler stumbled out of a bar one night at 1 a.m. and found adults riding Big Wheels. Part 4: Anne Nickoloff and Mike McKenna were students of Sheeler's at Case Western Reserve University from 2012-16, and stayed in touch with him afterward. Nickoloff is now a reporter at Cleveland.com and the Plain Dealer. McKenna is a fourth-year graduate student in clinical psychology at Ohio State. They tell us what it was like to have Sheeler as a professor. Part 5: Jim Tankersley is a White House correspondent for the New York Times focusing on economics. Back in the early 2000s, he worked with Sheeler at the Rocky Mountain News. They became friends and stayed in touch. Then, in August, Tankersley was named the pool reporter who had to follow President Biden to the Dover Air Force Base to receive the bodies of 13 service members, the last to die in Afghanistan. He reached out to Sheeler for help with that article.

Good Morning, Colorado, you're listening to the Daily Sun-Up with the Colorado Sun. It's Thursday September 23rd.   Today - The state's system that treats children with severe mental health issues is completely overwhelmed. Some kids are staying in county office buildings given the lack of safe housing. And on top of that, nearly 70 foster kids across the state are missing.   But before we begin, let's go back in time with some Colorado history adapted from historian Derek R Everett's book “Colorado Day by Day”:   Today, we're going back to September 23rd, 1909 when President William H. Taft, standing on a stage in Montrose County, set a golden bell down on a silver plate. An electric current opened the gates holding back the Gunnison River and water flowed through a 6 mile tunnel to the Uncompahgre River valley. President Taft predicted that “this valley, with an unpronounceable name, is going to blossom like a rose”, and within a few years 470 miles of canals were built to encourage diverse agricultural products.   Now, our feature story.   Colorado's system that treats children with severe mental health issues is so stretched that kids are in jeopardy. That's the upshot of a fiery letter sent by county health directors to state officials, and the details are bracing. Children in crisis are staying in motels and county office buildings for a lack of safe housing. Child protective workers spend hours, even days, on the phone trying to help them. And nearly 70 foster kids across the state are missing. Jennifer Brown has the details.      To read more of Jennifer's reporting on children in state custody, go to coloradosun.com.    And Before we go, here are a few stories that you should know about today:   A Colorado State University Pueblo student who authorities say made threats towards staff and fellow students at the school has been arrested after police say they found “a large cache of loaded weapons” and nearly 1,000 rounds of ammunition in his vehicle on campus. Robert James Killis, a 24-year-old who the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office says has military experience, is suspected of unlawful carrying/possessing a weapon on a university campus after the arrest Wednesday. The offense is a low-level felony.   Littleton police have named a suspect in a shooting that wounded one of their officers in the chest. Police are seeking 33-year-old Rigoberto Valles Dominguez, who remained at large Wednesday. The wounded officer, David Snook, was hit in his arm, leg and torso. He remains heavily sedated in an intensive care unit, Littleton Police Department Chief Doug Stephens said during a news conference, adding that the officer has ”a long road ahead of him.”   The Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission has issued its second-largest penalty ever -- imposing a $2 million fine against oil and gas operator KP Kauffman. The company was initially hit with a $1.8 million fine but the commission raised the tab after concluding that KP Kauffman had engaged in a “pattern of violations” for leaks and spills. The largest fine, $18.25 million, was issued in 2020 to Occidental Petroleum Corp., the state's largest operator, for a 2017 house explosion in Firestone that killed two people.     Jim Sheeler, beloved for remarkably evocative obituary writing during his years as a Colorado journalist, has died in Ohio at the age of 53. In 2006, when he worked for the Rocky Mountain News, Sheeler won the  Pulitzer Prize for Feature writing for Final Salute, a long-form story that chronicled the work of Major Steve Beck and how he helped the families of Marines who lost their lives in Iraq cope with the cost of war. Sheeler later taught at the University of Colorado and at the time of his death was a professor at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland.      For more information on all of these stories, visit our website, www.coloradosun.com. Get Up Nation®! My name is Ben Biddick. I’m the Creator and Host of the Get Up Nation® Show and Co-Author of Get Up: The Art of Perseverance with former Major League Baseball player Adam Greenberg. Recently I had the honor and privilege of speaking with the amazing Jas Boothe. Jas is an author, entrepreneur, disabled Army Veteran, Cancer Survivor, Innovator, Philanthropist, and Speaker. Prior to deploying to Iraq, her life was significantly impacted by losing everything she owned during Hurricane Katrina and a month later being diagnosed with an aggressive head, neck, and throat cancer. She needed complex full-time medical care, employment, and a place to live with her son. She was advised there were no existing programs for women Veterans with children. After extensive cancer treatment, Jas was allowed to serve in the Army National Guard. Remembering what she and her son had been through when they were in need, Jas committed herself to ensuring that no servicemember would be left behind and that all women Veterans would be treated with the dignity and respect they earned during their service. She founded Final Salute, an organization that has provided more than a million dollars to provide homeless women Veterans with safe and suitable housing. This only scratches the surface of what this amazing human being has accomplished during her life, and I’m honored she’s taken the time to join me. In a special episode, I rounded up a couple of volunteers (and maybe a voluntold) so that we could express our gratitude to all of our nations veterans! A big part of that for me is helping and promoting the people that support our nations hero’s. I mention a couple of the podcast, they are: AMVETS, Final Salute Inc., and Code of Vets. All three organizations are doing amazing work and if you are interested in helping or supporting veterans, they would be a great place to start! Code of Vets is very active and social media; mainly twitter, and focus on getting money to veterans in need! Please look them up at codeofvets.com or on twitter @codeofvets Next is Final Salute. Final Salute does a number of things to help female veterans, one of which is fighting to give homeless female veterans safe places to stay and help them get on their on feet. Reach out to them at finalsaluteinc.org and on twitter @finalsaluteinc Last and certainly not least is AMVETS. First Major Jaspen Boothe, founder of Final Salute, Inc., and The Miss Veteran America competition, tells us why she’s dedicated to raising awareness about women vets who are homeless … and filling the gap of support available to them.

Join me tonight with my special guests Jackie Zeman, who played Luke's little sister Bobbie Spencer and Ian Buchanan, who also worked with Tony for so many years.  Both were at the finale goodbye party and have lots of insight into Tony's last year on GH.

General Douglas MacArthur died at Walter Reed Army Medical Center on April 5, 1964. Years before, President John F. Kennedy had authorized an elaborate State Funeral for MacArthur. On the General’s death, President Johnson reaffirmed Kennedy’s directive and ordered that MacArthur be buried "with all the honor a grateful nation can bestow on a departed hero." Over the next week, MacArthur’s body lay in state at the 7th Regimental Armory in New York City and then in the Capitol Rotunda in Washington, D.C, before coming to the MacArthur Memorial in Norfolk, VA – a place chosen by the General to be his final resting place. The funeral was held on April 11th, the thirteenth anniversary of MacArthur’s firing by President Truman during the Korean War. This podcast tells the story of the General’s final days and the impressive funeral that honored his service.
