In today's episode, I talk about how to create new legal rules to guide tech toward reflecting human values with Brian Beckcom, one of the leading lawyers of his generation. Brian Beckcom is a Texas Super Lawyer, a designation that recognizes him as one of the top legal experts and practitioners in his arena. In addition to his work as a lawyer, he is also a Computer Scientist and a Philosopher. He created and hosts the popular podcast "Lesson from Leaders with Brian Beckcom." Brian is an honors graduate of the University of Texas School of Law. He is the author of 6 books and hundreds of articles on a wide variety of topics. He successfully prosecuted many high-profile cases, including the case that emerged in the aftermath of the Somali Pirate attack on the Maersk Alabama, which made headlines around the world, and the event was made into a Hollywood blockbuster starring Tom Hanks as Captain Phillips. Representing many members of the crew, Brian and his firm took on one of the largest shipping companies in the world, while simultaneously, his investigative efforts ensured that the true story was told.He also represented Captain Wren Thomas, who was kidnapped by Nigerian mercenaries while operating off the Coast of West Africa. Captain Thomas' story has been featured in national and international media. The case received international attention from the media and maritime shipping companies because of the heroic acts of Captain Thomas during the attack and hostage situation and also because of connections to Boko Haram and corruption in West Africa. In the conversation we talk about the way that case law formed to treat piracy, that is to say, the practice of attacking and robbing ships at sea, and piracy in our digital age, that is to say, the unauthorized duplication of copyrighted content that is then sold at substantially lower prices in the 'grey' market, We talk about the possibilities for, and the obstructions to, creating legislation that would stop some of the worst consequences and tendencies of big tech. And Brian makes the case for what law, at its most ethical and generative potential, might do to guide tech toward protecting and elevating human values.

Piracy, Kidnapping, & The Most Famous Case of the Past 20 Years: A Discussion of the Captain Phillips Case I was recently a guest on the “Great Trials” podcast. Great Trials is a wonderful podcast hosted by Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey in which they discuss in details some of the most famous trials in the country. In this episode, we delve into the infamous Captain Phillips case. When the U.S. merchant ship the Maersk Alabama was hijacked by armed Somali pirates, it made worldwide news. When American Navy Seals rescued the crew, that also made national news. And when Tom Hanks made a movie about Captain Richard Phillips, the Hollywood publicity machine ensured that the situation was broadcast all over the world for years. Brian Beckcom and his law firm, VB Attorneys, uncovered the real story of Captain Phillips, including reckless conduct, negligent orders, and disregarding the directives of the United States Government and other Western powers. This is the true story of Captain Phillips, told by Brian Beckcom, the lawyer who represented the crew against Captain Phillips and the negligent shipping company, the lawyer who ultimately forced the companies to settle with his clients after years of denying any responsibility. And now I give you, the true story of the Maersk Alabama, told by the lawyer who won the case.

In this episode I had the honor of sitting down with former Navy SEAL, Daniel Licardo. Daniel served for 16 years in the US Navy. 6 years at SEAL Team 4, 3 years at SEAL Team 6, 3 years at NSWG Training Detachment, 2 years RDT&E. After his time in the Navy, Daniel worked anti-piracy onboard the Maersk Alabama for 2 years, Roughly 6 years for the State Department instructing, and 2 years safety for the oil and gas industry. In this episode we decided to run without a script. We dig into the psyche of man and the subconscious mind, our failures at balancing out the delicate aspects of what it means to be a warrior and protector of the home. We talk some self defense, Hazing in the teams and its purpose, personal accountability, our relationships with God, the accident that left Daniel without both of his legs, VA, medications, and thoughts of suicide. Actual Anarchy Podcast - AnCap Movie Reviews from a Rothbardian Perspective
We're the captains now, with our pal Jared Wall of Breaking Liberty. This is a Valentine's Day episode for us, which we will elaborate on during the show. Everything is going to be OK. In April 2009, the U.S. containership Maersk Alabama sails toward its destination on a day that seems like any other. Suddenly, Somali pirates race toward the vessel, climb aboard and take everyone hostage. The captain of the ship, Richard Phillips (Tom Hanks), looks to protect his crew from the hostile invaders, and their leader, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). The pirates are after millions of dollars, and Phillips must use his wits to make sure everyone survives and returns home safely. Join us next week on this same bat-channel, at this same bat-time as we bring back Shaheen to discuss Tim Burton's "Batman" from 1989 starring Michael Keaton and Jack Nicholson. Show notes: http://www.actualanarchy.com/168 Presented by www.ActualAnarchy.com Robert and I analyze popular movies from a Rothbardian/Anarcho-Capitalist perspective. We use movies as a starting point for people who may not be familiar with this way of thinking. Discussion of the plot and decisions that characters make in relation to morality and violations of the non-aggression principle are our bread and butter. We also will highlight and discuss any themes or lessons from Austrian Economics that we can glean from the film. The point is to show what anarchy actually is with instances that are presented in film. We publish at least once per week; and occasionally will do specials surrounding holidays or events (elections/olympics) and have guests. SUBSCRIBE, RATE AND REVIEW ON APPLE PODCASTS (or iTUNES)

1123 Throwback Thursday: Year of Maersk Alabama Hijacking
Following the attack on the Maersk Alabama in 2009, former Marine Officer Jonathan McConnell founded Meridian.US, which provides security services and consulting for merchant shipping vessels. In a recent conversation with IBM's Diana Kelley, McConnell outlined some of the main security concerns in the maritime environment, emphasizing how these both reflect and differ from the security concerns faced by other industries. NWP welcomes the Executive Producer of the Academy Award nominated movie "Captain Phillips", Dana Brunetti! Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. It is — through director Paul Greengrass’s distinctive lens — simultaneously a pulse-pounding thriller, and a complex portrait of the myriad effects of globalization. The film focuses on the relationship between the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. Phillips and Muse are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, 145 miles off the Somali coast, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control. Dana talks about the filming of this movie and his other upcoming projects including Evel Knievel, House of Cards and Fifty Shades of Grey. www.captainphillipsmovie.com www.northwestprime.com
