Chair: Catriona Menzies-Pike It was Goethe who declared "call the dog, he is a reviewer". Reviewers are almost universally pilloried as partisan, ill-informed mediocrities fuelled by malice. What leads to this perception and why are they so reviled? We consider the state of Australia's reviewing culture and the impact of backscratching and sycophancy on its present condition. The editor of the Sydney Review of Books, Catriona Menzies-Pike, is joined by Melinda Harvey, Jeanine Leane, Caroline Overington and Beejay Silcox. Event details: Tue 07 Mar, 5:00pm on the West Stage

In 1997, fourteen month old Jaidyn Leskie was left by his young mum Bilynda Williams, with her boyfriend Greg Domaszewicz while she went for a rare night out. She never saw her child again. That same year, two families awoke to discover their teenage daughters were missing after a routine camp out with their friends. They were by then, miles away, having been abducted by two troubled young men with no boundaries, and nothing to lose. The responsibility of finding justice for the families of all three, fell ultimately to Rowland Legg and his team of detectives. Scenes in Melbourne this week bear a frightening resemblance to the United States Capitol attack. So what are protestors actually rallying for, why do they want to 'Kill the Bill', and when does activism go too far? Plus, has the way we look at age-gap relationships shifted, and what we once considered ordinary is now icky, and what we once considered novel is now normal? And, the important life lessons we learned from George Clooney this week, which include the Amal effect and the best type of friend. It was November 1994 and Jan Balmain was confused. She was waiting for her 22-year-old daughter Revelle to get off the train from Sydney to Newcastle. Revelle was supposed to be visiting before heading off to Japan for a career changing modelling gig. But Revelle never got off the train. Instead, hours earlier Revelle, who was working as a sex worker as well as a model, allegedly finished her shift at a client’s house, was dropped at a nearby bar, and was never heard from again. Her possessions littered the streets of Bellevue Hill where she lived. In this episode we speak with award winning journalist and author Caroline Overington. Caroline investigated the disappearance of Revelle in the late 1990s for the Good Weekend Magazine. She has also covered high profile missing person’s cases such as the disappearance of William Tyrell for The Australian podcast ‘Nowhere Child’. Her work as a journalist has made her a revered fixture in the Australian media landscape. Laura Turner chats with Caroline Overington - Journalist, 2 time Walkley award winner and author of new book Missing William Tyrell. Caroline has been reporting on William Tyrrell's case for year for The Australian and her book is just one way of keeping William's story alive.
In the tiny mid-north coastal town of Kendall, in NSW, Australia, a little boy in a Spiderman suit was running around his grandmother’s backyard on Benaroon Drive His name, of course, was William Tyrrell. It was September 12, 2014 – and at around 10.30am – three-year-old William was playing hide-and-seek with his older sister.William was a cheeky, playful little boy and one of his favourite games was pretending to be a tiger. As his mum and grandma went inside for a cup of tea, William let out one final roar, ran around the side of the house, then nothing.“It had become quiet,” his foster mum would later say. “Too quiet.”When William’s mother came outside only moments later, she expected to see her two young children playfully running about the backyard, but there was no sign of William. She called out his name again and again. But there was only silence. By all accounts, he’d simply vanished off the face of the earth. The police were called, and by 11.30am, there was an official search party combing the nearby woods for the little boy in the Spiderman outfit. This was six long years ago – and William, who would now be eight years old, still hasn’t been found. No trace of him – not a single hair follicle or piece of clothing - has ever been found.Award-winning journalist and author Caroline Overington, like many of us, is fascinated and heartbroken by the story of William Tyrrell. In her book, Missing William Tyrrell, Caroline delves into the mystery and explains why Australia won’t give up until we have answers. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
The case of little William Tyrrell is one of Australia's most baffling and heartbreaking mysteries. He was playing hide-and-seek with his four-year-old sister in the garden of his grandmother's house when he disappeared, seemingly into thin air.
It's been five months since the Nowhere Child podcast finished, the former detective Gary Jubelin has been on trial in Sydney, we won't know the outcome until the magistrate comes back in April. The inquest into William's disappearance is ongoing, with hearings due to resume in March with a result probable in the middle of the year. In the meantime Caroline Overington has finished a book on William's disappearance. Here she reads the first chapter to give a sense of the book and a later chapter to give you an idea of the kinds of things police did to try and find him. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
On the 12th of September 2014, a mother called 000 to report her son missing. Five years later, he still hasn't been found. William Tyrrell, the little boy in the spiderman suit, was born in 2011 to his biological parents whose names we aren’t legally allowed to tell you. At 9 months, William was placed into foster care with his older sister and at 3, William was playing outside his foster grandmother’s house in Kendall NSW when he went missing. So what actually happened on that day? Did he wander off or was he taken? And is there a chance he is still alive? Journalist Caroline Overington has spent the past year looking into the disappearance of William Tyrrell for her podcast Nowhere Child. William Tyrrell was a three year old boy who disappeared from the village of Kendall, on the mid-north-coast of New South Wales. Key facts were kept from the public, from day one. A lot of what was reported, especially early on, was false. In the new podcast, Nowhere Child, The Australian’s Caroline Overington delves into a case where notions of class and privilege; opportunity and poverty came crashing together, to create a nightmare for William Tyrrell. It’s been dubbed 'The New Gone Girl'. A fast-paced female psychological thriller from an author who has twice won the Walkley award for investigative journalism. If you haven’t read this book, stop right there, thankyou very much. There is a big fat twist that we are busting to talk about it. Did it leave you throwing the book across the room, or throwing back a champers because you picked it a mile off? Does a book need to have likeable characters to be a good book? We’ll take a look at the plot devices and why this was quite a departure for Caroline Overington. Show notes: Your hosts are Monique Bowley and Jacqueline Lunn with Katy Hall. Not many people can say they influenced Oprah, but Caroline Overington can. The award-winning author and journalist interviewed the most famous woman in the world at her Harpo studios last year, and it did not go as expected. A woman who believes in "fake it till you make it", she has twice won Australia’s most prestigious award for journalism, the Walkley Award for Investigative Journalism; and the Sir Keith Murdoch award for Journalistic Excellence. Her latest book is the thriller, The One Who Got Away, a bestseller that critics are saying rivals Gone Girl, but as she tells Mia Freedman, nothing compares to the hairy experience of raising 18-month old twins in New York.
