The first-ever Grand Slam Track event in Kingston is in the books and twelve athletes are walking away $100,000 richer. That's $1.2 million in prize money handed out across one weekend. The weekend closed the way it began: with Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone doing Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone things — cruising to a 50.32 in the 400, winning her race group, and reminding the world why she's the face of this sport. First signee. Final champion. Signature Sydney.Grant Fisher snuck into Slam Champion status with a gritty 3rd in the 3k after winning the 5k on Friday — edging Hagos Gebrhiwet by a single point. Sasha Zhoya won the men's short hurdles group by winning the 100 flat — proving that versatility, not just velocity is the new currency for the big money.Melissa Jefferson-Wooden doubled up in the sprints. Emmanuel Wanyonyi did just enough to hold off Marco Arop in the standings. Ejgayehu Taye ran 14:54 to sweep her distance group. And Alison dos Santos? Leaned like his life depended on it to close a 400m thriller by two hundredths.Oh — and Jamaica got its moment too. Danielle Williams, world champ turned home crowd hero, claimed her slam title in the short hurdles with a win in the flat 100. First Jamaican Slam Champion. First Challenger to knock out the Racers. Crowd went bananas.Every race meant something. Every move on the track changed the leaderboard. And from the pacing to the prize money, it actually felt like a sport you could follow.Next stop? Miami, May 2–4. New city. New matchups. Same $100K at the finish line.

On this episode of the Port City Plate Podcast, we dive into the world of one of Mobile's newest sensations: Chicken District, with owner Danielle Williams. Her journey in the restaurant business is as unique as the flavor of wings they serve. With a background in special effects and pyrotechnics, Danielle found herself at a crossroads when the pandemic halted the industry. Inspired by conversations with her neighbors and a desire to bring something unique to Downtown Mobile, the concept of Chicken District was born. With nearly 20 wing flavors, including favorites like Hot Honey Lemon Pepper and Buffalo Garlic, they've mastered the art of wing flavors. But it's not just about the wings; it's about a dedication to quality. Fresh, never frozen chicken sets their chicken apart, whether you're diving into their Lemon Pepper wings or one of their renowned chicken sandwiches. We also talk about their fries, unlike anything in Mobile – a waffle chip fry that's a game-changer, especially in the world of loaded fries. You will love the stories shared on this episode. In the future, robots may take over tasks such as doling out medications. But no machine can raise a child or truly care for a disabled, ill or aging loved one.  And home care jobs are projected to be among the fastest-growing jobs in America. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expects care jobs will grow 33 percent by 2029. By some estimates, 70 percent of people over 65 soon will require long-term care.  But care jobs are also, for the most part, poverty-wage jobs. They are low-paying, stressful, emotionally taxing, unpredictable and precarious. Half of all care workers in America earn so little that they qualify for public benefits. Nine out of 10 home health workers are women, 62 percent are people of color and one-third are immigrants.  In what many scholars say was an overt act of white supremacy and patriarchy, care workers were excluded from the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938. There is no instruction book, we do the best we can. Many of us wonder if we're doing the right thing and are hesitant to speak up to professionals like teachers. We sit quietly in our children's IEP meetings, maybe not even asking for clarification if we don't understand something. Danielle shares what she does. She gives concrete and actionable examples. She tells us she takes the day off from work whenever one of her sons has an IEP meeting because she knows she needs the time to process everything. She talks about setting aside the same day of the week to work on things. Danielle recommends taking someone with you to every meeting. They don't have to be "advocates" or lawyers, just someone who is not as emotionally invested to take notes. And she tells us about the simple one-page sheet she gives her son's teachers every year. it talks about who her sons are because they are so much more than IEP codes or their diagnosis. Simple steps most of us can adopt. She offers consulting services to parents around the country because she recognizes it can often be too much. Especially if you're a single parent.
