She interviewed Nixon and Oregon's one-time Olympic darling-turned-national villain, Tonya Harding and covered the events that rocked the country from the O.J. Despite the large number of women going to journalism school every year, studies have shown that men continue to dominate the media industry and hold positions of power in the newsroom. At New Naratif, though, most of our editorial team is made up of women. Since there’s always been a lot of interest during our open meetings in how our editorial team works and how we find and commission stories, we recorded this special episode of Southeast Asia Dispatches to give everyone an insight into how we work! Our Chief Editor, Kirsten Han, sits down with Deputy Editor for Bahasa Indonesia, Aisyah Llewellyn, and Deputy Editor of Bahasa Malaysia, Pauline Wong, to talk about what they look for when commissioning stories, why they believe it’s important to push back against a media culture of breaking news, and their own experiences as women in journalism.
In this week’s episode, one of The Second Source’s co-founders, Jasmine Andersson talks about the aims of the project, the launch of their new mentoring scheme and how women can support each other in challenging environments. In the news round-up, the team dive into what YouTube’s $25 million news spend means for publishers, whether Reddit will work for advertisers and what the deal is with Rolling Stone’s revitalised magazine. Chris worries that AR ads will start manipulating the size of his head. We discussed how to be a good interviewer, the power of vulnerability and how it changes with age. I asked about women in business generally, but also specifically in media - we ended up "taking breasts to work!" We briefly touched on Elizabeth's blog on Forbes.com and the business of guns in the USA. And I asked her about coping mechanisms as a single parent and breadwinner. Covering the Journalist As Witness Conference (March 17-18) at Guilford College and in continued support of Women's History Month, we focused on women in journalism and the experiences that participants will have at this upcoming event. From the earliest days of women in journalism through today, Cheryl Hatch and Richard Tsong Taatarii discussed women such as Dickey Chapelle, who indeed was a well known photojournalist from the WWII era through the Vietnam War. We discussed media legends like Barbara Walters and Diane Sawyer - whose rivalry we've moved on from but continue to teach us a great deal about the human psyche. We also touched on the impact of the Mary Tyler Moore, whose broad appeal influenced - not only women in journalism - but working women everywhere. Students who come to and experience the Journalist As Witness Conference will have the opportunity to experience real reporting and hands on work with career journalists who wish to share their craft and provide this unique experiential weekend of speakers and workshops - furthering the goal of enhancing journalism in the future.

The BBC Academy's Najiba Kasraee is joined by BBC Swahili service editor and presenter Zuhura Yunus, BBC Russian's Renata Tairbekova and Mahjooba Nowrouzi from the BBC Afghan stream. They talk candidly about the challenges of being a woman in the newsroom and offer advice on how to progress while maintaining a work/life balance. These four journalists, all based at the World Service's London headquarters, talk about the challenges and advantages of being a female journalist in their home countries as well as in the UK. They offer advice on networking, with Zuhura and Renata challenging perceptions that men make the best networkers. You'll need confidence. As Renata says, it's something every journalist should have: "If you can't go out on the street and do a vox pop, you're probably not going to be a journalist." Renata and Mahjooba talk about how being a parent can affect your career, from taking time out for maternity leave to needing to leave work on time to pick up children from childcare. They talk about the need for a working mum to be organised, have a great support network and be resourceful when working around the inevitable childhood illnesses. They each offer tips for women wanting to develop a career in journalism. Advice includes taking on board criticism and building on your mistakes to keeping your contacts and network organised, for your work and home life.
What should be done to support women journalists entering the profession and to ensure they are fairly represented at a senior level in the newsroom?
