Clairsy and Lisa reminisced about a certain radio station boardroom table and the sights it would have seen over the years. Hayden Young joined Clairsy & Lisa ahead of the Gather Round in Adelaide. They talked about whether he would be on the plane this week to Adelaide and also would the team be taking in a Barossa Valley tour while they're there. As a long time host of Play School, Luke's probably spent more time entertaining kids than any of us ever will! But beyond that, he's an amazingly accomplished actor… from getting his start on the kids show Lift Off! back in the early 90s, to being a regular on the awesome Redfern Now and more recently in the big budget adaption of The Artful Dodger on Disney+, not to mention a tonne of amazing theatre over the years. Luke is super generous and frank in this chat, talking openly about what it was like to have a kid really young, the powerful role his mum played in his life, and also talking honestly about his new blended family, the amazing joy that has brought him and his two sons and the deep love he has for his step-daughters... but also some of the unique challenges they have all had to navigate.   As you'll hear, Luke brings such positivity and fun to his parenting, but it's also obvious he understands that tenacity and sacrifice is a big part of it too… We get the feeling Luke leaves it all on the field when it comes to dadding. It was beautiful to hear him talk with such passion, and we are sure you'll agree. PS - we recorded this episode a while ago, and Luke has since tied the knot and made his blended family official!  Huge congrats to Luke!!   Luke is in a bunch of stuff at the moment, including The Artful Dodger on Disney + and you'll soon find him in the upcoming season 2 of SCRUBLANDS on Stan (and of course on Play School) Thanks as always to you guys for listening - you can get in touch at howotherdadsdad.com — And big thanks to HERTZ who are back as our exclusive sponsor in season 3.  And just like us, Hertz are all about making memories and having adventures.  So if you need a great car to complete your next family getaway, head to hertz.com.au/hodd for a great discount. Hello there, Adrian. And welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us Adrian Hyland, writing crime that is popular fiction with a literary edge. Adrian Hyland: Good morning, Jenny. Thanks for asking me. Jenny Wheeler: We're going to be focusing first on Canticle Creek, which is your most recent page turning mystery. I loved it. I must say it was quite a discovery for me. It's a page turner, as I emphasize, a really strongly, motivated narrative mystery, but it's got the sense also of an awareness of landscape and the creative process, which is sometimes more credited to literary fiction. In short, it does an excellent job of being a great page turner with a literary edge. And I wondered, is that a tension that you consciously feel as you're writing or is it just more something that comes to you naturally? Adrian Hyland: Hmm. I'd say it's one of the demands of the craft. I mean, for me, it what I like most about language, the thing that I appreciate is it's beauty. And if something isn't well written, so it comes across as a cliche or flat? Well, the book loses me, so yes, I try and balance both of those things, I think. Whether I succeed in either, as I was saying, I'm somewhere between the popular and the literary, I think, and maybe I fall between those two stools. But try to honor both of them, I think. I mean, I love both. I like reading, I love reading poetry and all sorts of things, but I also love reading. You know, all sorts of crime novelists, that they're all important to me. One of Australia's best writers is a crime novelist Jenny Wheeler: Australia's been particularly strong in crime novelists over the last couple of ...

Hello there, Chris, and welcome to the show. It's great to have you with us. Chris Hammer: Hi there, Jenny. Thank you so much for having me on. Jenny Wheeler: Getting the geographic location set at the beginning – you're talking from the Australian capital of Canberra, aren't you? Chris Hammer: That's right. Jenny Wheeler: Are you a Canberra born man? Chris Hammer: No, I was born in Tassie actually – Tasmania – but I've lived most of my life in Canberra. I grew up here. I tried to escape several times, but I kept getting sucked back. Being a journalist, it's a good place to be, in the Capital. I did a lot of politics as a journalist, but also my wife is an academic. She specializes in International History and History of the Asia Pacific and for her the Australian National University – the ANU – is based in Canberra. So it's perfect for both of us. Jenny Wheeler: You had a stellar journalism career and looking at your life from the outside, it looks like you replaced a stellar career in journalism with an equally stellar one in books. Right from the beginning, your first book, Scrublands, was an award winner and an international bestseller. Tell us how you managed to make that transition. Chris Hammer: You make it sound so easy and inevitable, but it wasn't. Indeed, Scrublands isn't my first book. Many writers, of course, have the one or two in the desk drawer that will never see the light of day, but I did write two nonfiction books. I quit full-time journalism for a while and went freelance. Join Jade and Chiara for episode 3 of Books and Booze as they go out of their comfort zone and dive into the world of contemporary! There’s some newly coined bookish lingo, viewers questions, Boozy Banter, and their frustrations with people being nasty to other Bookstagrammers.   Wine enjoyed in this episode: Jade devoured a delicious glass (or 3...) of the Australian 2016 Saltram Pepperjack Shiraz from Barossa.  Chiara enjoyed a stunning Italian Pinot Grigio called The Killer.   Many thanks as always for tuning in.
