Patrick shares stories of his mother and her ability to light up a room whenever she walks in. "She's always herself," beams Patrick. Patrick attributes, her sense of humor to her brothers and he says "she's a little butch, not too feminine." And all of that and more makes him love his mother even more. "She unadulterated herself. She never code switches or changes her behavior depending on the crowd. She always her most authentic self."Eight years of piano lessons was tough for Patrick. He didn't like the repetitive method that his teacher was using and he was bored. His mom eventually had to ground him for not practicing. But that's when he started exploring with little chunks, the melodies, the notes, breaking things down, playing them backwards and forwards until he absolutely fell in love with playing the piano. Patrick claims that his mom "gave him that space to be able to do that and what a privilege." He also admits that his ADHD was most likely a big part of the problem and today, finds great relief by taking a prescribed medication. Patrick's philosophy "even though life around you is chaos, you can still find an inner calm/inner peace, and my mom has that in spades. She can re-infect a room with her vibrancy so easily. She walks into a room and it lights up.""My mother knows that she's infectious around everybody else and so she's able to kind of manipulate that too to better suit the environment a little bit. She thinks everyone should be themselves, most authentically all the time.Below is the first first email response that I got from Patrick having asked if he'd be interested in joining me on SHLTMM."Hey Jackie. Thanks for reaching out! I love this concept for a podcast. My story fits perfectly for this since she's been a freelance true crime documentary writer for decades and she allowed me to feel confident in that space, just seeing her succeed and talking about the struggles in that space. I had a good role model. And also… she was the one who grounded me if I didn't practice piano lol, and now I'm a professional pianist so… I owe it to her for a lot of who I am today

This week Nicola and Di chat with the talented and brave Vikki Petraitis. Vikki is best known as a true crime writer and Casefile podcaster, who created The Frankston Murders series. Casefile is one of the most popular true crime podcasts around, topping the Apple charts with millions of downloads per month, so it was a thrill to get to hear some of the incredible stories from Vikki herself. As well as writing 18 books and having a top-rating podcast, Vikki is also a school teacher by day, which is where she has honed her wonderful storytelling abilities. In this conversation, we dive deep into The Frankston Murders and hear how Vikki still gets a bit spooked to this day about what went on in the suburbs of Melbourne back in the early 90s. Vikki shares how she was out on patrol with police on the night of one of the victims, Natalie Russell's murder, and how that motivated her to tell the story as a local community member. We talk about the way that the police disregarded the evidence at the time and the danger of what happens when women aren't believed. We also chat about how this book became a Casefile podcast, and the power of podcasting in not only sharing stories, but in some cases, making a real difference and getting laws changed. This was certainly the goal for Vikki - the Casefile team decided to release the podcast in 2023, the year that serial killer Paul Denyer was due for parole, and through their hard work they managed to get his parole bid denied and a law changed in parliament so that he can never apply again. Vikki shares her theories on why she thinks many women are fascinated by true crime podcasts, her own addiction to writing true crime stories and why she believes that podcasts are one of the most powerful platforms around. This is such a fascinating conversation with Vikki and we thoroughly enjoyed chatting with her. We hope you love it as much as we did! Silvia Pettem's “In Search of the Blonde Tigress," dips into the world of sensationalized Chicago newspaper headlines in the 1930s that claimed Eleanor was not only “the blonde tigress,” but also “the most dangerous woman alive.” But a closer look at her life shows that she was an otherwise ordinary woman who got caught up in a Chicago crime spree, then was convicted as an accomplice to murder, and sent to prison for 199 years. She escaped seven years later and managed to live out her life as America's longest-running female fugitive. Pettem's research led to police and prison records, court transcripts, and her theory of where the grave of the “blonde tigress” is today. Listeners might be familiar with some of her other 20 plus books including the recently revised "Someone's Daughter—In Search Of Justice For Jane Doe," which is also now part of a documentary series available on Hulu. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/booktalk-diana-korte/message

Former Associated Press Mexico City Bureau Chief Katherine Corcoran's IN THE MOUTH OF THE WOLF. A Murder, A Cover-up, and The True Cost of Silencing the Press reports some of the facts why 85 Mexican journalists have been killed in the past decade with no consequences for the killers. Except for war zones, Mexico--a democracy--is the world's most dangerous country for journalists. Corcoran focuses on the murder of legendary journalist Regina Martínez who was no stranger to retaliation. A journalist out of Mexico's state of Veracruz, Regina's stories for the magazine Proceso laid out the corruption and abuse underlying Mexican politics. In 2012 she was bludgeoned to death in her bathroom. The message was clear: No journalist in Mexico was safe. At the AP, she led an award-winning team that broke major stories about cartel and state violence and abuse of authority in Mexico and Central America. Her columns about Mexican politics and press freedom have appeared in numerous newspapers and publications. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/booktalk-diana-korte/message

Tony speaks with True Crime Writer and Professor Harold Schechter about his book Hell's Princess: The Mystery of Belle Gunness, Butcher of Men. In the pantheon of serial killers, Belle Gunness stands alone. She was the rarest of female psychopaths, a woman who engaged in wholesale slaughter, partly out of greed but mostly for the sheer joy of it. Between 1902 and 1908, she lured a succession of unsuspecting victims to her Indiana “murder farm". Some were hired hands. Others were well-to-do bachelors. All of them vanished without a trace. When their bodies were dug up, they hadn't merely been poisoned, like victims of other female killers. They'd been butchered.Hell's Princess is a riveting account of one of the most sensational killing sprees in the annals of American crime: the shocking series of murders committed by the woman who came to be known as Lady Bluebeard. The only definitive book on this notorious case and the first to reveal previously unknown information about its subject, Harold Schechter's gripping, suspenseful narrative has all the elements of a classic mystery - and all the gruesome twists of a nightmare.Be sure to like and share this episode! Podcasts, Radio, Social Audio and Data are converging to create engaging and authentic content for a new generation of listeners. To get access to all the audio conversations and book content for Age of Audio, go to theageofaudio.com. Show Highlights: Whilst I enjoy interviewing some of the big names and names that people are familiar with. What I love are the unknown stories. Almost as you said, sometimes I approach people and they say, why would anybody be interested in hearing my story? It's very ordinary. It's very boring, but it's the little details that you find in that, that you wouldn't get necessarily in a textbook or a mainstream documentary. I think that that's the other key thing about podcasting is you can really niche down on a subject that might not have a mainstream interest, but you can build a decent audience around that subject matter. I remember things like bomb shelters. We don't think about those now, but even back then people talked about them. What I'm trying to get to is that what you're capturing now is stuff that we've easily committed to memory and forgotten about. She said to me later, I didn't know hardly any of that. He's talked to me a little bit about it, but you have just illuminated, a whole, a different part of the story and no idea what, what he'd experienced. I think the amazing part of all of this, is that there always was audiences. It's just that maybe they didn't have the platform or maybe it just wasn't mainstream enough for people to own up and admit that they're into this stuff. And now you're seeing people saying screw that, it's like, I'm into this now and I'm going to listen to this.

“Cold Case Chronicles” tells the stories of victims – some missing, some murdered and some with changed identities. All are true, and each are mysterious in their own ways. The cases in this nonfiction narrative date from 1910 through the 1950s and include an evolution in forensics, as well as historical context in order to view the men, women and children through the lens of time.” One of these new forensic tools is genetic genealogy, the use of DNA testing (often using commercial home kits) to determine relationships between individuals, find genetic matches and discover one's ancestry. In addition to writing her true crime books, Silvia is a longtime newspaper columnist for the Boulder Daily Camera and author of more than 20 books. Though she is not a member of law enforcement, she works with them, has written a book for them and is credited with doing the lion's share of the research on a famous Boulder Jane Doe case (“Someone's Daughter: In Search of Justice for Jane Doe”). In this episode, Wendy and Beth interview Phil Chalmers and Dellmus Colvin. Phil Chalmers is a True Crime Writer, Law Enforcement Trainer, and Television Personality. He has appeared on many television shows including Killer Kids on A&E, and Crime Watch Daily. He is the author of several books, including Inside the Mind of a Teen Killer, and he’s working on a book about serial killers. He has interviewed many serial killers and is very familiar with hundreds of black male serial killers. We covered Dellmus Colvin in S2 E15. Phil speaks to him regularly, and we made an offhand comment on that episode about wanting to talk to him. Phil reached out to us, and we couldn’t say no. However, we want to point out that we are not serial killer sympathizers. We thought it would be interesting to hear what he had to say, and we wanted to know about his early life. Some of what he says is shocking. If you think that this might be triggering for you, maybe skip the part with Colvin, which happens about 30 minutes in. But definitely do listen to the part with Phil! The leader of a Mormon sect comes to an untimely end at the hands of his enemies. - Andrew Kehoe, the “Dynamite Farmer,” becomes the perpetrator of the worst school massacre in history, in the year 1927. - The diabolical mind of Arthur Waite, a chronic liar and “Heiress Hunter” who hatches a plot to poison an entire family and inherit their fortune. - Why the true crime genre remains such a popular subject for writers, and how the “gapers block” is one explanation of our ongoing fascination with the macabre.
