In this episode of Biographers in Conversation, Dr Gabriella Kelly-Davies chats with multi-award-winning author Anna Funder about her choices while crafting Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life. Wifedom resurrects Eileen O'Shaughnessy, a brilliant Oxford graduate who married George Orwell in 1936.       Here's what you'll discover in this episode:    Anna Funder's inspiration for writing Wifedom   Why and how Eileen O'Shaughnessy was written out of George Orwell's life story   How Anna restored Eileen's voice and visibility   How Anna challenged the traditional biographical form by blending memoir, biography, literary criticism and feminist polemic   The literary devices Anna employed to craft compelling and at times, gripping, narrative   How Anna retraced Eileen's footsteps through World War Two London and the trenches of the Spanish Civil War   How Anna revealed the systemic biases that have historically silenced women's contributions, especially those of a wife or female partner   Why Wifedom stands as a testament to the importance of re-examining history through a more inclusive lens, ensuring voices like Eileen's are heard and remembered.

Australian author Anna Funder talks to Dheepthika Laurent about her latest book "Wifedom", a part-fiction, part non-fiction and part-hybrid novel about Eileen O'Shaughnessy. She was the highly educated wife of George Orwell, who played a pivotal but largely uncredited role in his career. Anna Funder also responds to criticism by the Orwell Society that the book portrayed Orwell as "maleficent" and talks about what propelled her to leave her career as a government lawyer to pursue writing full-time.

Rachel and Simon speak to the non-fiction author and novelist Anna Funder. After training as an international human-rights lawyer in Australia, Anna moved to Germany and published "Stasiland: Stories from Behind the Berlin Wall" in 2003; the book won the Samuel Johnson Prize (now known as the Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction). Her debut novel, "All That I Am", followed in 2011. It fictionalised the true story of a group of friends who fled the Nazi regime for London in the early 1930s. The novel won the Miles Franklin Prize, Australia's most prestigious fiction award, and has been published in more than 25 languages. Her latest book, "Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life" (2023), is a biography of Eileen O'Shaughnessy, George Orwell's first wife, and combines original research with fictional reconstructions. It was longlisted for the inaugural Women's Prize for Non-Fiction. We spoke to Anna about moving from the law to writing, investigating the secret police of East Germany in "Stasiland", and "Wifedom". “Always Take Notes: Advice From Some Of The World's Greatest Writers” - a book drawing on our podcast interviews - is published by Ithaka Press. Lyndsay Keith is an anchor at Merit St. Media and on the ground at the RNC to give us the latest from Milwaukee. The RNC kicked off with a bang as Trump made an emotional walk-out with "Proud To Be An American" setting the tone. Since then it has been electric with an energized atmosphere of unity. Speeches from our representative have been poignant, classy and touching. Most impactful, have been the speeches from American moms. One mom, Anna Funder, had the crowd chanting "Weston, Weston" as she told the heartbreaking story of her 15 year old being a victim of the fentanyl crisis that has struck so many American families. Madeline Brame, mother of slain Army Sergeant Hason Correa, spoke impassioned as she witnessed first-hand Democratic DA's like Alvin Bragg rob her son of justice in the New York court system. As a former Democrat "her eyes are now open" to the soft on crime policies and liberal DAs that have ruined great cities like New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Lyndsay notes how President Trump showed a more vulnerable side as he was moved and inspired by the speeches he's watched over the last 2 days. Jim McLaughlin gives us insight to the latest polling as 538 releases a questionable poll that has Biden over Trump whilst CNN is reporting Trump is on a path to 330 electoral votes. Jim shares the latest from battleground states and how Trump is polling over Biden in every state on the issues that matter most to Americans. She is the author of the international bestsellers Stasiland, about the Stasi, which is being made into a TV series starring Elizabeth Debicki, and All That I Am, about the Nazis, which won the Miles Franklin Award. Her latest book, Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life, sees Anna take on the patriarchy. She exposes how literary giant George Orwell wrote his wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy “out of existence”, despite (and possibly because of) her pivotal role in his work.Anna and I talk through Orwell's misogyny and his own “doublethink” (believing two contradictory ideas while blanking out awareness of the contradiction), plus how doublethink works to keep patriarchy going. Really Interesting Women

Really Interesting Women - Podcast Revisited on 'Throwback Thursday'Anna Funder Ep. 105.   Anna Funder is one of Australia's most acclaimed and awarded writers and an international success. One of her books is currently being made into a film with a Hollywood household name as its protagonist.  ...and she dreamed of being a writer since she was a child. Anna spent her early childhood in Paris where her father was working. First day at primary school was a little tricky. Didn't understand what anyone was saying. She subsequently learnt to read and write in 2 languages. And from that moment, words were her obsession.  She started her working life as a lawyer and gave up what she called “probably the best lawyer job in Australia”, working in the Attorney General's department on treaty negotiations and international law. But she didn't feel like it was her ‘real life'. She made a life changing decision to move to Berlin and become a writer. The full story can be heard on the podcast including, while promoting her book ‘Stasiland', going on a public stage in Germany where the first 2 rows were occupied by ex-Stasi, all taking notes! That 2003 book Stasiland won, amongst many other things, the Samuel Johnson Prize which is for the best non-fiction writing in the English language (!!). Actor Tom Hanks described it as 'fascinating, entertaining, hilarious, horrifying and very important.'  Her 2012 novel, All That I Am, won a myriad of awards including the very prestigious Miles Franklin Award.  In her recently released book, Wifedom, Anna uncovers George Orwell's ‘forgotten' wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy, and rewrites her into history. Geraldine Brooks described the book as, 'Simply, a masterpiece'. Her books are important because of the truths they reveal. They are beautifully researched and exquisitely told.  Have a listen to this fascinating conversation. George Orwell – the author of classics like 1984 – is a household name. But have you heard of his first wife, Eileen O'Shaughnessy, who convinced her husband to write the political fable which evolved into Animal Farm? Despite being vital in Orwell's career, she has been omitted from the historical narrative by both her husband and his biographers since. Speaking to Lauren Good, Anna Funder reveals O'Shaughnessy's hidden life – and considers how women through the past have facilitated the success of their husbands from the shadows. As this is the final episode of the first season of “How to Smash the Motherhood Penalty”, I wanted to reflect on what I have learnt from taking the leap and making this series. And I also wanted to share what I would do if I had a magic wand. It is a question I have asked all my guests – if they had a magic wand that would make the biggest impact on smashing the motherhood penalty – what would it be? So, it is only fair that I also answer this question. Especially as I have been informed and educated on my answer after listening to all my expert guests in this season.Thank you for supporting and listening to Season One – please let me know what you have thought about it and if you are keen for more! And what other motherhood penalty smashers I can interview? Who is doing this work that I need to amplify?I was delighted to be interviewed in this final episode by my daughter Rose. Very appropriate given the purpose of my work is to smash the motherhood penalty so that our children and their children never have to experience it.I share with Rose what I have learnt so far by making this podcast including:- Seeing procrastination simply as fear showing up and how to move through it.- The importance of listening to your whispers as do know what you need.- The power of stories to help us feel seen.- Why the phrase “I'm lucky” is one that I wish I did not hear as much as I do.- My magic wand that will smash gendered caregiving norms. We are not there yet.- How there can be a cloak of secrecy on what is really happening with work at home.- Using the words “sotto voce” which I probably pronounce wrong!- My favourite quote from Anna Funder's book “Wifedom” which speaks to how complicated work at home gets completed.- Leaning into hard conversations.- The power of measuring what men are doing. This is the shift we need.- Education and support for parents is overdue and needed.Resources Discussed:“Atomic Habits” by James Clear – as James says, “motivation often comes after starting”.“Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life” by Anna FunderConnect with EmmaThis podcast was funded by Works for Everyone, a business based in NZ and operating globally that supports working parents to stay in the leadership pipeline through coaching, workshops, and advocacy.Your host, Emma Mclean, is a mother of three teenagers, an Executive Coach and the Founder of Works for Everyone. Anna Funder has already garnered international praise for her non fiction (Stasiland) and fiction (All That I Am)   In Wifedom, she does something new and bold, creating a hybrid of genres that brings together biography, memoir, fiction and feminist critique in what she calls ‘an intervention' that examines how George Orwell's first wife, Eileen O'Shaughnessy came to be erased from the many biographies of her husband.   Though very much a crucial partner and collaborator in his political activism against the fascists in Spain as well as in his writing, few traces of Eileen are to be found.   Funder, an avowed Orwell admirer, brings O'Shaughnessy out from the shadows and portrays her as a sharp, resourceful and calm partner under pressure, who is also an intellectual match for her husband. Funder questions the silence that has enveloped O'Shaughnessy for too long: is it deliberate, or simply the symptom of general oversight explained by the sexism of the times?   At times furious and at times funny, this is biography at its most creative and thought-provoking, forcing the reader to re-assess the reputation of one of the most admired writers of his time. Wifedom is a game changer.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Anna Funder's Wifedom: Mrs Orwell's Invisible Life is, ostensibly, a biography of Eileen Blair, nee Eileen O'Shaughnessy, aka the first Mrs George Orwell. And indeed, Anna tells Eileen's story beautifully, using Eileen's own words from letters to friends and to her husband, with added judicious fiction, as she imagines scenes from the Orwells' lives, and from Eileen's life. Turns out, Eileen played a vital role in Orwell's writing and in his life (in actually saving his life – and indeed in keeping alive many others during the Spanish Civil War) and yet she's mostly absent from Orwell's own writing and from his biographies, which are all written by men.And so, as well as shining a light on one woman's hitherto hidden life, Wifedom is also a polemic against the patriarchy and an examination of what it meant and means to be a wife. In this Chops, Mick chats to Anna about all of this, about wife-ing, about Eileen, about Orwell, and, not unrelated to that last name, a lot about arseholes. In addition to discussing the marriage of Eileen and George Orwell, Anna also touches upon her own marriage; the difficulties of juggling the competing responsbilities of being a writer, mother, and wife, and the inevitable compromises that women make as a consequence of social structures which govern our society. This episode was hosted by Ryan and his wife, Emily Rushton, a teacher and Doctoral Researcher at the University of Cambridge, who was finally given a public forum to take the piss out of her husband. Blending forensic research, fiction, life writing and criticism, Funder reveals the importance of his wife Eileen O'Shaughnessy. Eileen's financial and practical support allowed him to write, and her own literary talent shaped his work, including Animal Farm. Written over six years, the idea for Wifedom came after the discovery of six letters in 2015 from O'Shaughnessy to a friend, their contents contrary to all the biographies written on Orwell.

Heyman’s Fury has been described as a ‘searing, thrilling and redemptive’ (Anna Funder) account of her year-long stint on a fishing trawler in the Timor Sea at age 20 that raised her out of poverty and abuse to become her own hero. The beguiling second novel from the author of Walking Wounded for fans of Anna Funder and William Boyd. Gripping and atmospheric, Winter in Tabriz tells the story of four young people living in 1970s Iran during the months immediately prior to the revolution, and the choices they have to make as a result of the ensuing upheaval. The lives of Damian and Anna, both from Oxford University, become enmeshed with two Iranians, Arash, a poet, and his older brother Reza, a student sympathetic to the problems of the dissident writers in Iran, and a would-be photojournalist, interested in capturing the rebellion on the streets. It is an expertly imagined tale of the fight for artistic freedom, young love and the legacies of conflict.

Anna Funder is one of Australia's most acclaimed and celebrated writers. Her multi-award winning novel All That I Am wasan homage to four extraordinary German anti-Hitler activists in exile in London in the 1930s. It won the Miles Franklin Prize, spent over one and a half years on the bestseller list, and is being made into a feature film. Anna's Stasiland tells true stories of people who heroically resisted the communist dictatorship of East Germany, and of people who worked for the Stasi. A contemporary classic, Stasiland won the 2004 Samuel Johnson Prize for best non-fiction in English. Tom Hanks called it ‘fascinating, entertaining, hilarious, horrifying and very important'. Both books are international bestsellers, published in over 24 countries. In 2016 Anna published The Girl with the Dogs, a poignantly beautiful short story inspired by Chekhov's The Lady with the Dogs. Anna is a former DAAD Fellow in Berlin, Australia Council Fellow, and Rockefeller Foundation Fellow. She lives in Sydney.

Michael is joined by Anna Funder, the Australian writer & author of ‘Stasiland’ (which tells stories of people who heroically resisted the communist dictatorship of East Germany), on the anniversary of the removal of ‘Checkpoint Charlie’ – which was designated as the single crossing point (on foot or by car) for foreigners and members of the Allied forces between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War (1947–1991).   East German leader Walter Ulbricht agitated to get the Soviet Union's permission to construct the Berlin Wall in 1961 to stop emigration and defection westward through the Border system, preventing escape across the city sector border from East Berlin into West Berlin.   Checkpoint Charlie became a symbol of the Cold War, representing the separation of East and West. Soviet and American tanks briefly faced each other at the location during the Berlin Crisis of 1961.

With Debra Adelaide, Anna Funder, Dr Anita Heiss and chair Kerryn Goldsworthy. It's a universally acknowledged truth that women read more fiction than men...but why? For women who experience the majority of the emotional and mental load of managing families, homes and relationships, the novel seems poised as an ideal form to explore this terrain - the power wielded within it, its pitfalls, price, and pleasures. The novel can be a tool for resistance, a solace, and an art. So what does the imbalance in what gets published actually mean? How does it affect what is considered 'worthwhile reading'?
