In this episode of Bring the Pain, I decided to enter a challenge and do a Masters of VGM episode. The sole artist I will be covering is none other than Michiru Yamane, who is most notable for her work on the Castlevania series. In my opinion, Konami had always had great music in their video games, and Yamane did not disappoint. I started this episode with some of her earlier work that wasn't related to Castlevania before diving deep into that series. Between the songs, I talk about each game and give a memory or two about what that track meant to me or why I picked it. What is a podcast? A miserable...no, marvelous pile of music! Peter (Retrogamepapa) and Michiel are joined by special guest Leah Haydu (Cane & Rinse, Character Issues podcast). This quest is all about the excellent music of the Castlevania series, starting with Symphony of the Night. Why do we start there? Because this quest is a follow up of an older, by now unfortunately dead and buried podcast. In true Dracula fashion, Retrogamepapa decided to (temporarily) resurrect this podcast with the Knights of the Retro Table, to finish the job.In the past there was a video game music podcast called Sound of Play. Castlevania is an American anime-style adult animated streaming television series on Netflix produced by Frederator Studios. Based on the Japanese video game series of the same name by Konami, the first two seasons adapt the 1989 entry Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse and follow Trevor Belmont, Alucard and Sypha Belnades as they defend the nation of Wallachia from Dracula and his minions. Characters and elements from the 2005 entry Castlevania: Curse of Darkness are also featured beginning in the second season. The series was originally planned as a film, developed by producer Kevin Kolde and his company Project 51. Kolde had a contract for a script with writer Warren Ellis in 2007; the project entered development hell until about 2015, when Adi Shankar boarded the project and it was picked up by streaming service Netflix. Powerhouse Animation Studios joined the team and production commenced. Its art style is heavily influenced by Japanese anime and Ayami Kojima's artwork in Castlevania: Symphony of the Night with the production team including staff members who worked in the Japanese anime industry. The series premiered on Netflix on July 7, 2017, and was renewed for an expanded second season of eight episodes on the same day; the second season premiered on October 26, 2018. A ten-episode third season was greenlit by Netflix and released on March 5, 2020. The series ended with the release of its fourth season on May 13, 2021. A new series set in the Castlevania universe is in the works at Netflix. Coller le thème du Third Song à la sortie du mois est devenu un exercice aussi excitant que technique. Ça avait bien commencé : des musiques de jeux SEGA pour La Révolution Arcade de SEGA, des musiques de jeux mettant en scènes des ninjas et des samouraïs pour Sekiro. La seconde vie des Souls, tout était fluide ! Petit à petit néanmoins, l'affaire s'est corsé. Après un Third Song dédié au Royaume-Uni pour L'Œuvre de Peter Molyneux puis un autre contenant une triple thématique Rock/Étoiles/Rockstar pour la sortie de nos livres sur GTA et Red Dead, on a cette fois du trouver des musiques de jeux vidéo traitant d'alchimie ! Un peu tous découragés par la difficulté du thème, on a envoyé la patate chaude à Damien, qui s'en est finalement très bien sorti. It’s really hard to believe that it’s been almost 3 decades since we were first introduced to Konami’s Castlevania, which has become its very own institution in gaming. We still remember those first few steps we took with Simon Belmont, on his request to destroy Dracula and his army of ghouls and monsters. And since then, the series has gradually grown into something stronger, thanks to the addition of compelling gameplay, unique storylines, and memorable boss encounters. Many still consider it one of the best video game series that is still enjoyable to this day. Published in US by Tokyopop, $9.99, Rated T for Ages 13+. Count Dracula's demon army has swallowed up the land of Walachia in 15th century Europe and is poised to invade the rest of the continent. A vast army was sent to Walachia by the Eastern Orthodox Church several months ago but none of the soldiers ever returned alive. Only a noble named Lord Belmont, a self-styled vampire slayer, has shown any backbone or skill in fighting Dracula's armies. Hoping to dispense of humanity's last hope, Dracula sends one of his two trusted generals, a demon alchemist named Hector, to kill Belmont. Somehow Hector ended up being found half-dead on the side of a road by a nun named Rosalee who has been nursing him back to health. Dracula sends his other general, Isaac, to find out Hector's fate. A young boy named Ted gets caught up in the story when a werewolf on Hector's trail comes to visit his village. My Grade: B+
