A weekly program produced by the Catholic Diocese of Harrisburg, Pa.   Candid Catholic Convos 2.16.25   SHOW DESCRIPTION:   It's hard to have faith that things will get better or truly believe that this suffering is there for a reason. Instead of drawing closer to God, it often feels like we've been abandoned. Pope Francis wrote, "God does not abandon us and often amazes us by granting us a strength that we never expected and would never have found on our own." He likened the journey of the ill to that of the disciples on the road to Emmaus who recognized Jesus travelling with them only after sharing their anxieties and disappointments with him. So how can we keep the faith during times of illness and uncertainty? How can we reingivorate our hope and draw closer to God instead of feeling abandoned? Today we're chatting with Doctor Greg Burke, a physician and president of the local Catholic Medical Association, to talk about the intersection of faith and medicine, how we can maintain our faith in sickness and in health, and how faith informs our choices.

Questions answered this episode: 1. I'm 21, finishing up college soon and have been fighting for the past 6 years to overcome an addiction to porn and masturbation that started when I was first exposed to porn in 4th grade. The past 2 years have been especially tumultuous with lots of victory and defeat. However I believe God has been allowing these setbacks in order to purify me in numerous ways. Recently I started going on dates with a good friend of mine. As a result, I've noticed two particularly concerning things in myself. 1: I feel like I've resigned myself to the fact that God is the only one who would ever accept me. I can't imagine someone knowing everything about me and still loving me fully. I want to be loved by more than just God but I see that as a fantasy. 2: I feel like my battle with porn has left me needing physical therapy for my sexual desire. I feel like I've been so hard against lust that I've lost the ability to experience sexual desire purely. Do you have any recommendations on how to rehabilitate my sexual desire? 2. I'm a physical therapist specializing in pelvic health. I see prenatal and postpartum women, postmenopausal women, and men who also may suffer from pelvic pain or pelvic surgery. This is a wonderful profession which also opens a door to see a lot of suffering and life challenges. In my work I meet people from all walks of life and belief systems who are experiencing pain and sometimes trauma. Lately I've been asking myself how I can best help people when the help they want is not in keeping with my catholic faith. These are matters around sex, gender and all the values and teachings that come with these. How do I practice and stay true to my faith. Can I treat them according to their goals and tell myself is between them and God or am I complicit in their sin? 3. How can I learn to embrace my masculinity in a healthy way when sometimes I do not feel like a complete normal man since I only have 1 testicle. I've always felt a little shy and inadequate even though I've excelled in many areas of life. Ask Christopher West is a weekly podcast in which Theology of the Body Institute President Christopher West and his beloved wife Wendy share their humor and wisdom, answering questions about marriage, relationships, life, and the Catholic faith, all in light of John Paul II's beautiful teachings on the Theology of the Body.

It's Monday, January 13th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com.  I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus 20 Pakistani Christians remain imprisoned for blasphemy against Mohammad An International Christian Concern analysis of data from the United States Commission on Religious Freedom found that 20 Christians have remained behind bars in Pakistan for a total of 134 years for the crime of blasphemy against the false prophet Muhammad. Between 2002 and 2023, the Christians were detained or imprisoned in separate cases for alleged crimes, including “insulting the Prophet Muhammad,” a crime punishable by death under Pakistani law, “desecrating the Quran,” and “intending to outrage religious feelings.” All 20 remain incarcerated to this day.  One of the Christians, Asif Pervaiz, reportedly sent a text message to his manager at a factory that was deemed insulting to the false prophet Muhammad. Pervaiz was detained in 2013 and sentenced in 2020. The court order in Pervaiz's case, viewed by Reuters, stated that the Christian “shall be hanged by his neck till his death” for “misusing” his phone.  In another case, friends Adil Babar and Simon Nadeem, both teenagers at the time of their arrest in 2023, were detained for allegedly calling a dog “Muhammad Ali.” Judge gives Trump 'unconditional discharge' to respect presidency On Friday, Judge Juan Merchan sentenced President-elect Donald Trump in his historic hush money case to an unconditional discharge -- allowing Trump to avoid prison, fines or probation, but cementing his status as a convicted felon just 10 days before he takes the oath of office for his second term, reports ABC News. During a brief virtual hearing, New York prosecutors blasted Trump for engaging in a "direct attack on the rule of law" and making efforts to "undermine its legitimacy" by attacking the judge and others involved in the case. Trump's defense team, which vowed to appeal, said the case should never have been brought and called it a "sad day for this country." The President-elect was sentenced on Friday after a New York jury convicted him in May on 34 felony counts of “falsifying business records” to conceal a payment to a former adult film star. Trump has repeatedly maintained his innocence throughout the trial, characterizing the case as a “weaponization of our justice system.” Judge Merchan said the unconditional discharge was the "only lawful sentence" to protect "the office of the president ... not the occupant of the office." 2,500 pro-life doctors challenge Biden's pro-abortion mandate Alliance Defending Freedom attorneys filed a federal lawsuit on Friday against the Biden administration for trying to force emergency room doctors to perform abortions under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act, reports LifeNews.com. In the case, ADF attorneys representing the Catholic Medical Association, a national network of 2,500 pro-life physicians and health care providers, argued that the mandate violates members' conscience rights and oversteps executive authority. After the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and gave health care decision-making power back to the states in the Dobbs decision, the Biden administration announced its intention to force doctors to perform abortions under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act. Shortly after the announcement, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services issued a memorandum stating that it grants the administration authority to override state pro-life laws, even though the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act does not mention abortion. ADF Senior Counsel Matt Bowman said, “Doctors—especially in emergency rooms—are tasked with preserving life.  Federal bureaucrats have no business compelling doctors or hospitals to end unborn lives, especially when the law they are citing grants them no such authority. Emergency room physicians can and do treat life-threatening conditions such as ectopic pregnancies. And every state allows doctors to do whatever is necessary to preserve the life of a mother.” Bowman concluded, “Elective abortion is not life-saving care—it ends the life of the unborn child—and the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act does not grant the government authority to force doctors to perform these dangerous procedures. Rather, it requires doctors to treat a pregnant woman and her ‘unborn child.'” Psalm 127:3 says, “Truly, children are a gift from the Lord; the fruit of the womb is a reward.” While Los Angeles burns, CA House Speaker invests $25 million to fight Trump Los Angeles is engulfed in flames, 16 people have died. and more than 10,000 structures have burned to the ground because of dry hydrants thanks to Democratic Governor Gavin Newsom and Democratic Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass, yet California's Democrat lawmakers will allocate $25 million to California's Justice Department to fight the incoming Trump administration, reports the Gateway Pundit. Ashley Zavala, the KRCA News California Capitol Correspondent, was incredulous. She confronted California's Democratic State Assembly Speaker Robert Rivas. ZAVALA:  “Is now the right time to have a special legislative session on allocating money to fight Trump in a way that you could already do without a special legislative session?” Rivas was reduced to a stuttering mess as he tried to justify his actions. RIVAS: “So I'm, you know, I'm here to address this, this, you know, these, these, these, these wildfires. This is a historic, historic wildfire. (crosstalk) This is, this is a historic, this is historic event. These wildfires, as I mentioned, are going to be quite possibly, be some of the worst wildfires and disasters in the State and national history.” ZAVALA:  “But minutes ago, while this wildfire is happening, and while people are trying to understand what's going on and are worried about disaster relief, worried about the ability to get homeowners insurance, your chamber gaveled into a special legislative session to prepare for Donald Trump in a way that you are already able to do without a special legislative session. So again, is now the right time for that?” RIVAS: “So, certainly our focus right now as speaker, Ashley, at this moment, my colleagues and I, we are acting with great urgency, great urgency, to ensure that we're providing much-needed relief, um, to Angelinos to ensure that that that, that we, you know, understand what it's going to take for that, for for for this region to recover.” Samaritan's Purse ready to help fire victims And finally, as deadly wildfires tragically consume some of California's metropolitan areas, Samaritan's Purse is prayerfully standing by to offer help in Jesus' Name. Once local officials give the word that it is safe to enter the affected areas, they will mobilize teams of volunteers to aid hurting homeowners. He is host of the “The Catholic Current” via The Station of the Cross Catholic Media Network and the iCatholicRadio app (weekdays at 5PM Eastern).     In Today's Show I have been told that we cannot know for sure by our own knowledge if we are in a state of grace. Can you please elaborate on this? Is missing mass a mortal sin if I don't know how to drive and no one is able to take me to mass? I am a new convert, old in age. Our priest says baptism wipes away all sins so you only confess sins after your baptism. Coming into the church you get 'conditionally baptized,'' even if you were previously baptized. So, to make a general confession, should I only be confessing sins post-Baptism or should I encompass my entire life? It feels very necessary. I donate to a homeless shelter where I believe they use the money wisely. I do not give money to homeless people on the streets because I think some of that money will go to alcohol or to drugs. By saying no to those homeless, am I ignoring Jesus's call to help others in need? How can one get a proper formation in scholastic philosophy and theology without attending a seminary? Any good scholastic manuals or books you would recommend? I was married 30 years ago in the Catholic Church. Less than a month later, my husband literally never came home. Just left. I was very blessed and my family helped me through that devastation and I filed a divorce. Since then, I've lost my way in the church because of the divorce. My question though (while I am Catholic, he was not): Is there any way to be forgiven and take communion and confession again? Every time I walk in a church I cry, as I miss it so much. I just finished reading the Life of Brother Lawrence, a very uplifting book. In a chapter about “Practicing the Presence of God", he states; “the first means is a new life, received by salvation through the blood of Christ.” In my church, they stopped passing the cup with the blood of Christ after the pandemic. What does he mean by that? At what point in church history was the foundation of the Mass established as it pertains to the usage of organs and other instruments? I'm sincerely wondering if you can explain some of the changes that you've noticed over the years and how, if at all, you may have soured on how music is often used in the sacred liturgy at places like Saint Typical's (which I wholeheartedly agree with, by the way). I agree we can have no souvenirs of sin in Heaven. Can you explain in slow, simple steps how to rid ourselves of this danger? I hear you talk a lot about the importance of preaching. Has that always been important to you, or did that develop during your priesthood? Other than prayer, how can we support our parish priests? I think people forget that priests are people too. It seems like most of the time you are just “used” for blessing this thing or that statue, and that your time is not respected.   If you love Ask A Priest Live, now is the time to let us know by making your generous donation of any size today! Dr. Byrne has presented testimony on life-death issues to nine state legislatures beginning in 1967.     In Today's Show  China is building the world's largest DNA database to facilitate forced organ harvesting for profit. Why should this concern Catholics? My question is about "humanized mice" which are produced by taking live organs such as thymus, liver, lungs, bone marrow from babies aborted alive, then transplanting them. These organs must be taken prior to the death of the baby because they are then transplanted into mice to develop monoclonal antibodies to develop many of the drugs in current popular use. I understand most people are unaware of this procedure and its evil implications, but why is the Church not condemning this? Why is IVF unacceptable for Catholics? Is abortion actually referenced or mentioned in the Bible? To what extent are we obligated to follow the advice or orders of a doctor when so many have turned to simply giving “feel good” advice? For example, doctors affirming overweight patients to “love their bodies” or encouraging those with gender dysphoria to “be themselves?” Do you feel, as a result of the quick fixes that are so often thrown at us in the medical community nowadays, that we've lost sight of the importance of living a healthy lifestyle?   Visit the show page at thestationofthecross.com/askapriest to listen live, check out the weekly lineup, listen to podcasts of past episodes, watch live video, find show resources, sign up for our mailing list of upcoming shows, and submit your question for Father!

How would that compare to donating organs to potentially save another person's life, or is it essentially the same issue? From a scientific point of view, when does human life begin? How should this impact our view of the abortion issue and how we respond to pro-choice arguments? Can you explain the Church's teaching on the death penalty? Can a government utilize capital punishment morally? Why has there been no outcry and condemnation from the Catholic Church regarding the use of humanized mice in medical research? If an embryo has already been frozen and the “parent” realizes the error of their ways in regard to IVF, what should then be done with that embryo? Dr. Cretella is Executive Director of the American College of Pediatricians (ACPeds). Her article Gender Dysphoria in Children and Suppression of Debate was published in the 2016 summer issue of Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons. Following this, she became one of the world's most outspoken critics of gender ideology in pediatrics. She is regularly consulted by many media news outlets. Dr. Cretella received her medical degree in 1994 from the University Of Connecticut School Of Medicine. She completed training at the Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford, Connecticut at the University of Virginia. Dr. Cretella serves on the Advisory Board of the Alliance for Therapeutic Choice and is Chair of the Gender Identity Subcommittee for the Catholic Medical Association. She is a peer reviewer for the journals, “Issues in Law and Medicine,” and the “Journal of American Physicians and Surgeons.” After 15 years of group practice in rural Connecticut and Rhode Island she left clinical practice to devote more time to family and the ACPeds.
