Frank Phobia is a sweetheart. He's also the leader of Anthrophobia (who happen to be releasing their new J. Robbins produced record GOING OUT SWINGING on the 22nd of this month). But mainly — he's a sweetheart. One that has been a low key hero to countless touring bands that have made their way through various venues in Pennsylvania for God knows how many years. The man's an institution. On this episode we talk to Frank about his mentor Carol Schutzbank, Chameleon Club, bouncing around PA, major label lessons, pseudonyms, being a punk-rock pillar, Steve Harris, Bob Stinson, booking Local H, booking the Local H movie, Zoetropolis vs Zoetrope, pussy and money, Lititz, hair farmers, Rights of the Accused, New Coke, and WHAT'S THE BEST?!?: 1985.

It's Christian Rock Summer! This is the beginning of a month long exploration of the fringes of Christian music with Josh Christianson joining Josiah as co-host. We're talking "not a Christian band, just Christians in a band." We're talking Christianity being more of a relationship than a religion. On today's episode, James (@cigarette_liker) joins Josh and Josiah to discuss the hardcore/metalcore/mathcore band, The Chariot, and its charismatic front man, Josh Scogin. They discuss the band's discography, their notorious live shows, what made them unique at the time, and whether or not there is a political or religious philosophy behind it all.NOTE: I recorded the Patreon shout outs for this episode in June, so I missed a new person. Watch & Listen to Felix & the JMC Podcast here; https://jmcpod.com/ What's up podcast fam? I'm your host Levi McCurdy and today I had the honor of sitting down with Felix Arroyo, host of the amazing Journeyman Chronicles podcast. This was an epic nearly 2-hour conversation diving deep into Felix's origin story and the trials and tribulations of his podcast journey so far. We started all the way back in 1996, exploring Felix's early days getting into music, writing plays, and discovering his innate passion for storytelling. I was blown away hearing how he taught himself to create music on his own as a teenager, driven by a pure love for hip hop and conscious rap. From writing his own albums to performing live shows at the famous Chameleon Club, Felix gave us an inside look at his come up on the Central PA rap scene. We even got into that iconic green screen "Everything Burns" album cover art that I remembered from back in the day! Beyond music, Felix opened up about his evolution into podcasting and the motivation behind starting the Journeyman Chronicles show. After years stuck in a dead end job, he yearned to take back control of his time and do something aligned with his purpose. Even as he struggled with consistency and technical challenges those first couple years, he persevered with a commitment to keep growing the show. Now in Season 3 he's built real momentum, lining up interviews weeks in advance and attracting more guest outreach than ever before. Our wide ranging conversation touched on everything from the difficulty of balancing passion projects with family life, to the inner belief and work ethic required to make it independently. Felix gave incredible insight into his spiritual grounding and vision to build an inclusive media network spotlighting diverse voices. I could relate to so much of his podcast journey, from scrapping by in the early days to later finding confidence as a host and interviewer. Our transparent talk exemplified the real conversations that podcasting enables between two people genuinely invested in each other's growth. This talk with Felix inspired me tremendously as a fellow podcaster and content creator. I'm pumped for him to keep expanding his reach and honing his skills on the Journeyman Chronicles. His humility, perseverance and care for community shine bright and I know he's destined for big things. I hope you enjoy this candid glimpse into the heart and mind of a talented up and coming podcaster! Please show Felix lots of love by subscribing to his show, and let me know which parts resonated with you the most from our discussion. We sat down with Lights in the backstage bar of The Chameleon Club in Lancaster, PA. Lights walked in with a comfortable, charismatic energy that made me feel at home right away. We dove into the creative process behind crafting the comic book Skin & Earth from scratch, why you shouldn't always wait for inspiration to inspire action, preparing for an apocalypse, and Lights becoming a mother to her beautiful daughter Rocket Wild. I love approaching conversations like this with an open mind. Through intimate details of her life, Lights strengthened my perspective on a variety of topics and taught me a few things as well (If you're in a parking garage during an earthquake, don't stay in your car). Thank you to Lights and her management team for setting up the interview and making this conversation possible. Since then, AGT has exploded into Pennsylvania venues and festivals; gaining momentum and expanding their family base with a wide range of music styling and infectious songwriting. With each song, AGT brings a fresh and new atmosphere to the table. Their compositions are carefully layered with thick harmonies, intricate musical movements, deep rooted stories, and uplifting lyrics. Improvisation moves one song into the next, leaving a surprise around every corner. There is a strong sense of “family” in the group which helps drive their art and inspire one another. AGT has made many transformations since the beginning, always growing and moving forward with their music. The band is fronted by vocalist Emily Newman. Her powerful voice gives life to the lyrics and propels the music for the band. Guitarists Asa Wilson and Travis Mason steer the jams with their innovative lead/rhythm guitar work. Andrew Bodogh lays down the atmosphere with psychedelic synth swells and catchy keyboard lines. Bass guitarist Josh Tacker digs deep to release his grooves while the beats flow effortlessly from drummer and percussionist, Jose Teran. With a little over four years under their belt, Appalachian Gypsy Tribe has found themselves on many festival bills (Bear's Picnic, Some Kind of Jam, Boogie in the Bungalow, PA Sound Summit, Peace of Mind, Celebration of Life, Zucchini Moon, Carpe Noctem, Jam Along the Creek, Woodstock Reunion) as well as on the stage of numerous popular night clubs and venues (The Sherman Theater, River Street Jazz Cafe, The Abbey Bar, ArtsQuest Center, Chameleon Club, Tellus 360, North Star Bar, The Legendary Dobbs, The Holy Hound, The Funhouse, Pearly Bakers, Pickering Creek Inn, The WInner's Circle, and The Depot). AGT has sharred the stage with acts including Golden Gate Wingmen, The Heavy Pets, Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad, The Schwag, Ryan Montbleau Band, Consider the Source, The Mantras, The Breakfast, Splintered Sunlight, The Underwater Sounds, Flux Capacitor, Dr. Slothclaw, Still Hand String Band, Out of the Beardspace, Swift Technique, Nik Greeley & The Operators, and Mysterytrain... as well as bringing in the 2015 New Year with Melvin Seals and JGB & The New Riders of the Purple Sage! With the release of Appalachian Gypsy Tribe's second studio album, "Gypsy Wind," and the successful accompaniment production of the GYPSY WIND FESTIVAL, the members of the band are full of energy and excitement. AGT is ready to follow wherever the music may lead.
Award-winning author Francine Prose came to the Library to talk about her latest novel, “Lovers at the Chameleon Club, Paris 1932.” In this conversation with NYPL’s Jessica Strand, Prose discusses love, storytelling, and how to read like a writer.
Prose's protagonist, Lou Villars, is based on the athlete and Gestapo interrogator Violette Morris, who was photographed with her lover in a Parisian nightclub in 1932.
Francine Prose discusses her new book LOVERS AT THE CHAMELEON CLUB, PARIS 1932 (HarperCollins, April 2014) with Erin Wicks, Producer @HarperAudio_US. A richly imagined and stunningly inventive literary masterpiece of love, art, and betrayal, exploring the genesis of evil, the unforeseen consequences of love, and the ultimate unreliability of storytelling itself Paris in the 1920s. It is a city of intoxicating ambition, passion, art, and discontent, where louche jazz venues like the Chameleon Club draw expats, artists, libertines, and parvenus looking to indulge their true selves. It is at the Chameleon where the striking Lou Villars, an extraordinary athlete and scandalous cross-dressing lesbian, finds refuge among the club's loyal denizens, including the rising photographer Gabor Tsenyi, the socialite and art patron Baroness Lily de Rossignol, and the caustic American writer Lionel Maine. As the years pass, their fortunes—and the world itself—evolve. Lou falls in love and finds success as a race car driver. Gabor builds his reputation with vivid and imaginative photographs, including a haunting portrait of Lou and her lover, which will resonate through all their lives. As the exuberant twenties give way to darker times, Lou experiences another metamorphosis that will warp her earnest desire for love and approval into something far more sinister: collaboration with the Nazis. Told in a kaleidoscope of voices, Lovers at the Chameleon Club, Paris 1932 evokes this incandescent city with brio, humor, and intimacy. A brilliant work of fiction and a mesmerizing read, it is Francine Prose's finest novel yet.
