This week Kate Jinx is joined by comedian & film lover/critic/chameleon Alexei Toliopoulos to talk about Gillian Armstrong's 1982 film with that "little something extra" – Starstruck! A musical extravaganza that is So Sydney, complete with a pub under a Harbour Bridge pylon, a talent show at the Sydney Opera House (or is it the Seymour Centre) and a gig at the Lizard Lounge aka the Bondi Pavillion. A breakout role for Jo Kennedy, it's still way too underseen but Jinx and Alexei are on a mission to make everyone watch it as many times as they have.Join the Hogg Hive on Patreon to hear Alexei's Also Alsos coming soon!See Alsos:Alexei's interview with Gillian Armstrong for the Sunburnt Screens podcastJo Kennedy in Tender Hooks (dir. Team Common is currently working on our transition to a weekly show. We'll be back this summer with new episodes. In the meantime, here's one from our archives. Tucked underneath the bustling Cambridge Common restaurant near Porter Square is the Lizard Lounge, a longtime gathering place for Greater Boston's poetry scene. Since 1998, the venue has hosted a weekly event that combines curated poetry performance with live, improvisational jazz. The venue celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, and the retirement of Jeff Robinson, the leader behind the musical stylings that accompany this iconic poetry night. WBUR's Cristela Guerra joins The Common for more on Robinson's legacy, and what's next for the Lizard Lounge Poetry Jam. Greater Boston's daily podcast where news and culture meet.
This week, Chris Bohlman of the “Retro Bassin'” YouTube channel gets big in Japan, we leaf through the '91 Bass Pro Catalog and order all the wrong things, decide a frog is frog as long as Larry chokes on it, and jitterbug our way to glory with a Color C-Lector.

Chuck drove out to Western Massachusetts to sit on Lisa’s front porch surrounded by chickens, a vocal rooster, two small children having an amazing time doing whatever small children feel like doing, bees and the occasional mouse to talk music, songwriting and Life in the Time of COVID.Lisa’s latest album How We Want To Live is a beautiful record that reflects her many life changes over the past few years. Her songs are a musical ‘thank you’ to her grandmother who introduced her to the guitar and to songwriting, as well as a message to those in her life. The album reached #1 in Contemporary Folk on Roots Music Report, she was nominated in 2019 for Folk Artist of the Year at the Boston Music Awards and was the 2019 Kerrville Folk Festival New Folk Winner. Her honest and well crafted songwriting reflect her own personality. Lisa is a calming presence, thoughtful and very in the moment. It was appropriate to be surrounded by the wonderful chaos of life - the joyful sounds of her kids, a crowing rooster and the arrival of the Amazon delivery truck, which she hopes, one day, will deliver ice cream.

This week we interact with Joey Tepedino. Joey hosts the open Mic at the Lizard Lounge in Lancaster and we end up talking about comedy a lot because that's how we know each other. Full disclosure: I fucked up again. I had the mic inputs assigned incorrectly, so we were recording through the onboard mics instead of the ones we were actually talking into. Look, if there's anything you should know about me, it's that I will always have good intentions, and will usually fuck it up in some way. But I'm working on that. So listen to this and get over it. It really doesn't effect your life in any way. Also I love you. I don't know. This ended up sounding really mean, so I just wanted to say something nice. Go away. I love you.

Kabir Sen, AKA MC Kabir is an educator at heart who teaches through music. He teaches at Shady Hill School in Cambridge and his students are some of his biggest fans, as we discovered when several of his students attended our latest ConcertCast at City Winery Boston. Kabir also plays with hip-hop reggae band Krush Faktory and they appear often at local establishments like the Lizard Lounge, The Plough and Stars and Bull McCabes. He’s gotten great reviews in Billboard, The New Yorker, Boston Globe, International Herald Tribune, Boston Herald, SPIN, VIBE, NPR and others. We all met up in front of an intimate crowd at the Haymarket Lounge to talk hip-hop, education, lyrics and their message.
When we first began this podcast and started putting together names of people we would like as guests, Billy Beard was on the primary list. Not necessarily because we had heard him play, but because we saw him playing with everyone else. Billy got his start in Boston with the pop band Face To Face. And not to date ourselves but we totally remember their hit song and video 10-9-8. He has worked over the years with Patty Griffin, Melissa Ferrick, Kris Delmhorst, the late Mark Sandman from the great Boston band Morphine, Rose Cousins, Lori McKenna and Kim Richey to name just a few. Billy is part of the award-winning band Session Americana, and has toured extensively in the US and Europe and is another example of how he continues to draw amazing musicians together. We just caught him recently at the Lizard Lounge playing with some of the same wonderful singer-songwriters with Sub Rosetta – a smaller version of the Sub Rosa collaboration with some of Boston’s great musicians. They will be at the Lizard Lounge every third Wednesday. It is appropriate that Billy won a Boston Music Award for Unsung Hero in 2008 – in celebration of his hard work and commitment to the Boston music scene. Our friend and drummer Jonathan Beakley joins us this time around a co-host. Song List: Song 1: Love Changes Everything - from Love and Dirt (Session Americana) Song 2: Around The Bend - from Into This World (Dennis Brennan) Song 3: 10-9-8 - from Face To Face (Face To Face) Song 4: Fallin’ - from Bitter Sweet (Kim Ritchey) Song 5: Little God - from Silver Bell (Patty Griffin) Song 6: Mighty Long Time - from Live at the Haybarn Theatre (Session Americana)
