The livestream announcing the cast shattered records with over 250 million viewers. Fans speculate RDJ as Doom is a one-time appearance to set up God Emperor Doom for Secret Wars. Andor Season 2 is maintaining its serious, grounded tone, building up to Rogue One beautifully. The ethics of AI-generated trailers are increasingly blurry, especially when studios start profiting off them. Jonathan was pleasantly surprised by Snow White despite online negativity—highlighting its stronger romance arc and musical charm. Memorable Quotes:

In Comic Reader Résumé, I use Mike's Amazing World of Comics to travel back through time via his virtual newsstand to the genesis point of my lifelong collecting of comics. From there, I can offer a “work history” of my fandom through my active purchasing of (relatively) new comic books beginning in January of 1982, when my interest in the medium went from sporadic and unformed to routine on through compulsive accumulation. To streamline the narrative and keep the subjects at least remotely contemporaneous, I will not generally be discussing what we call back issues: books bought long after their publication date. Sometimes, I will cover a book published on a given month that I picked up within a year or so that date, and I give myself an especially wide berth on this aspect in the first couple of “origins” episodes. We'll get more rigidly on point as my memories crystallize and my “hobby” spirals out of control into the defining characteristic of my life (eventually outpacing squalor and competing neuroses.) Episode 26 - Murdock and Marvel: 1987 After the wonders of 1986 the comic industry found itself with a glut of new companies, new titles, and new awards shows.  How would it all work out?  Lets go back to '87 and find out… PreShow Banter  A tweet from Forrest about the Watchmen books. The Year in Comics  Notable and Newsworthy Industry Trends Awards Dan's Favorite The Year in Marvel Events & Happenings New Series/Limited Titles New Characters Series Ending Who's in the Bullpen ROOKIE OF THE YEAR: Mark Bagley Dan's Favorite The Year in Daredevil  Appearances: Daredevil #238-249, Amazing Spider-Man #284 and #286-288, Marvel Saga the Official History #14-16 and #23, Classic X-Men #6, Marvel Fanfare #31, Spectacular Spider-Man #128, Amazing Spider-Man Annual #21 and Web of Spider-Man #30  Writing credits: Ann Nocenti (238-245, 247-249), Jim Owsley (246)  Pencilers: Sal Bucema (238), Louis Williams (239-240, 243-244), Todd McFarland (241), Keith Pollard (242), Chuck Patton (245), Tom Morgan (246), Keith Giffen (247), Rick Loenardi (248-249)  Inks: Steve Leiaoha (238), Al Williamson and Geof Isherwood (239), Williamson (240, 248-249), Al Milgrom (241), Danny Bulanadi (242) Williamson and Bulandi (243), Tony DeZuniga (244-246), Dan Hunt (247) Nerdist top Daredevil comic runs: https://nerdist.com/article/10-greatest-daredevil-comic-book-runs-of-all-time-ranked/  The year begins with the Daredevil befriending a group of kids called the Fatboys – who we'll see many more times throughout the year – and Daredevil save a girl from Sabretooth  We then get a series of stories from Nocenti featuring a new villain – First is Rot-Gut a Jack-the Ripper style villain who doesn't have powers – just likes to cut up people, Next we had the Trixster who's causing problems for the city of New York over Christmas, An everyday man accidently kills his boss and becomes the Caviar killer, and finally a drug dealer who uses voodoo to control things that incurs the wrath of a real voodoo creature.  We then get likely the best story of the year and it guest stars the Black Panther. This will be our spotlight story for the week.  As the year continues, we have more solo book stories that feel similar in scope and impact to the character as the ones before the spotlight book. We do see the return of Black Widow for an issue as the pair take down a deranged super soldier. Karen tries to get Matt back into office work by surprising him with new offices   There is a short-lived subplot where Karen Page starts to be frightened by the violence Daredevil dishes out, but she came to see it as fine after an issue or two.  The year ends with a two-book story arc involving another new villain, Bushwacker, who has an arm he can convert into a gun that sees the return of Wolverine to aid him in tracking the villain – which leads to a battle between the two over how justice should be handled. In this story we also meet Tyrone Janson – who is blinded by chemicals dumped in the Hudson River.  New Powers, Toys or Places New Supporting Characters New Villains This Week's Spotlight: Daredevil #245 August 1987 “Burn” Recap Why We Picked This Story The Takeaway Bills come due. Questions or comments We'd love to hear from you!  Email us at questions@comicsovertime.com or find us on Twitter @comicsoftime. ------------------ THANKS TO THE FOLLOWING CREATORS AND RESOURCES  Music: Our theme music is by the very talented Lesfm.  You can find more about them and their music at https://pixabay.com/users/lesfm-22579021/.  The Grand Comics Database: Dan uses custom queries against a downloadable copy of the GCD to construct his publisher, title and creator charts.  Comichron: Our source for comic book sales data.  Man Without Fear: Kuljit Mithra's Daredevil site contains a staggering collection of resources about our hero, including news, interviews and comic details.    The American Comic Book Chronicles: Published by TwoMorrows, these volumes provide an excellent analysis of American comics through the years.  Because these volumes break down comic history by year and decade they are a great place to get a basic orientation on what is happening across the comic industry at a particular point in time.  Joshua and Jamie Do Daredevil: A fantastic podcast that does a deep-dive into Daredevil comics.  This ran from 2018-2020, and covered most of the first volume of Daredevil, and was a fun way to get an in-depth look at each issue of Daredevil from 1-377.  My Marvelous Year: This is a reading-club style podcast where Dave Buesing and friends chose important or interesting books from a particular year to read and discuss.  This helped me remember some fun and crazy stories, and would be a great companion piece to Murdock and Marvel for those who want more comic-story-specific coverage.  BOOKLIST  The following books have been frequently used as reference while preparing summaries of the comic history segments of our show.  Each and every one comes recommended by Dan for fans wanting to read more about it!  Licari, Fabio and Marco Rizzo.  Marvel: The First 80 Years: The True Story of a Pop-Culture Phenomenon.  London: Titan Books, 2020.  This book is sort of a mess, as the print quality is terrible, and Titan doesn't even credit the authors unless you check the fine print.  It's like this was published by Marvel in the early 60s! But the information is good, and it is presented in an entertaining fashion.  So its decent, but I would recommend you see if you can just borrow it from the library instead of purchasing.  Wells, John.  American Comic Book Chronicles: 1960-1964.  Raleigh: Two Morrows, 2015.  Not cheap, but a fantastic series that is informative and fun to read.  Wright, Bradford.  Comic Book Nation: The Transformation of Youth Culture in America.  Baltimore: Johns Hopkins University Press, 2001.  This is the revised edition.  Marvel Year By Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2022.  The academic in my rails at using information from any work that doesn't have an author credit, but this is a decent (if very surface) look at each year in the history of Timely / Marvel from 1939 to 2021.    Cowsill, Alan et al.  DC Comics Year by Year: A Visual History.  New York: DK Publishing, 2010.  Because its nice to occasionally take a peek at what the Distinguished Competition is up to.  Dauber, Jeremy.  American Comics: A History.  New York, W.W. Norton & Company, 2022.  An excellent, relatively compact history of the domestic comic industry from its 19th century origins through to recent 21st century developments.  An excellent successor to Bradford Wright's Comic Book Nation.

Listen in as Tyler and I re-explore the classic Claremont material, with Fariha reading it FOR THE FIRST TIME! In this episode we read Marvel Team-Up (1972) #89, a Nightcrawler solo story by Claremont with just a dash of Spider-Man as we learn more about Kurt's past in the circus and if he can keep his tail to himself. Then, in (Uncanny) X-Men Annual 3, Claremont writes his first of many fairy-tale send-ups - that also happens to be a cautionary environmental tale and also full of some supple bottoms of the male team members as draw by George Perez. Finally, in Classic X-Men (1986) #31, Professor X takes out his social class discomfort on a Shi'ar plumber while cosplaying as Captain Picard. Yes, it's all as weird as that implies. Also, Peter is full of anecdotes and Tyler tries to make us all cry about fish. We mostly stay away from spoilers for House of X and Powers of X, though Fariha discusses one of the themes of the Dawn of X without spoiling anything specific.

And, why does Colossus nearly tear the team apart before defeating Arcade's plot with the power of love?! We also read back-up stories in Classic X-Men (1986) #29-30, and it turns out #29 is an ESSENTIAL Colossus issue! In this episode we read Uncanny X-Men (1963) #114-115 and a back-up that fits between these issues in Classic X-Men (1986) #21. We also briefly comment on Mystique's debut in Ms. Marvel (1977) #16-18 so that we can discuss a later story about Mystique and Rogue from Marvel Fanfare (1982) #60 (2nd story). In Uncanny X-Men, Jean and Beast think the X-Men are dead and barely make it out of Antarctica themselves. Meanwhile, Cyclops and the rest of the team tunnel out of Magneto's volcano to emerge in The Savage Land! There, they have to repeatedly fight for their survival, but are initially unwilling to assist Ka-Zar with liberating his home from a self-proclaimed god. Marvel Fanfare (1982) #60 is a story of one of Rogue's first missions with Mystique and her nascent Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, which leads us to discuss the sexual and addictive nature of Rogue's powers. Our conversation includes one very minor comment about a character and his location in Hickman's era of X-Men - it's barley even a spoiler.

In this episode we read Uncanny X-Men (1963) #112-113 and corresponding back-up stories from Classic X-Men (1986) #18-19. In UXM #112-113, Magneto has the X-Men cornered, first in his magical magnetic flying wagon, and then in his under-volcano base in Antarctica. The team cannot work together to defeat him, and Jean is afraid to push herself to overpower him, so the team become his captives! And, Magneto has a specific revenge in mind after his time spent as an infant at the hands of Xavier and Moira. Classic X-Men #18 shows us just how much power Jean might be wielding (and keeping secret from the team), while Classic X-Men #19 is a riveting tale of Magneto as a Nazi-hunter who things the only good Nazi is a dead Nazi. It's certainly one of the stories that influenced the version of Magneto in X-Men First Class! So nine weeks ago, we had writer Justin Zimmerman on the podcast to talk about his upcoming book, The 27 Run: Crush. And today that book hits retailer shelves across the country. So we brought Justin back into the studio to discuss the new book and all the work that goes into publishing a book once the book is done.  Now, if you listen closely -- and we know you do! -- there is a special giveaway promotion hidden within the podcast. Because who doesn't like a free comic? Listen close and enter to win! The original book, The 27 Run, came out in 2018 and is still available via Amazon, Comixology, or the publisher A Wave Blue World's website. The book can be summed up as Mechs vs Monsters with a black-comedy twist. If you are a fan of Godzilla or the Pacific Rim movies, this is the title for you! In addition, we have our Pick 3 selections for January 13, sponsored by our friends at Clint's Comics. Obviously, we want you to pick up The 27 Run: Crush today, but here are three more books to keep an eye out for as you do your shopping this week. Finally, we say goodbye to Kansas City comic creator and our friend, Steve Lightle. From a breakout debut in Legion of Super-Heroes to The Doom Patrol to Classic X-Men, Steve was a stellar artist in the field. More importantly, he was a stellar human being, husband, father, and grandfather. Our world is a little dimmer with his sudden passing last Friday.  At the time of our recording, there was a GoFundMe set up to help provide for the Lightle family. Once again, the comic community stepped up and provided generously in just a short period of time. At the family's request, that GoFundMe has been stopped, as the needs have been met. We would suggest if you would still like to make a donation in memory of Steve Lightle, please go to the Hero Initiative website and contribute there.  We would love to hear your comments on the show. Let us know what you've been reading or watching this week. Contact us on our website, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, or email. We want to hear from you! As always, we are the Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! and we hope you enjoy the show. The Worst. Comic. Podcast. EVER! is proudly sponsored by Clint's Comics. Clint's is located at 3941 Main in Kansas City, Missouri, and is open Monday through Saturday. Whether it is new comics, trade paperbacks, action figures, statues, posters, or T-shirts, the friendly and knowledgeable staff can help you find whatever it is that you need. You should also know that Clint's Comics has the most extensive collection of back issues in the metro area. In this episode we discuss the first truly massive development in Claremont's run - the death and rebirth of Jean Gray in Uncanny X-Men (1963) #100-101, as well as a pair of stories he inserts around that in back-ups from Classic X-Men (1986) #8-9. If you want us to continue this series in the long term, we need to keep hearing that you're watching and reading along. We've shot a complete "pilot season" to get us to the M'kraan Crystal and back, but whether we return for the introduction of Wolverine's Canadian backstory in UX #109 is up to you. Our conversation includes some minor spoilers for House of X and Powers of X!

We didn't plan this but its May and our 75th Character Corner just happens to be the start of our Chris Claremont X-Men series and Claremont started his 17 year X-Men run in May 1975. It's like we were meant to do this. This is probably going to be the closest you get to us doing an X-Men comics podcast. We start at the beginning with Claremont's Phoenix saga which really covers 44 issues to truly understand Jean's evolution as the Phoenix. It fleshes out Jean, her relationship/friendship/sisterhood with Ororo (Storm) and her roommate Misty Knight (yeah...Jean was rooming with Misty Knight). We see that Charles Xavier is kinda an asshole, the first appearance of the Shi'ar, how the new X-Men come together as a family and so much more. Having reread this it makes what Fox has done with two attempts at the Dark Phoenix storyline infuriating. The Phoenix saga isn't about how Jean becomes so powerful she loses control. It's about how Jean Grey sacrifices herself to save her family. Twice. She dies and is reborn as the Phoenix out of love to save the X-Men. The path to her becoming the Dark Phoenix is a slow burn of betrayal. But even then, it ends with her gaining control thanks to her family's willingness to sacrifice everything for her and in the end she sacrifices her life again to save the X-Men. It's a masterful story that's been neutered in the movies. Issues: X-Men Giant Size #1 - Not Claremont but this introduces the new team/characters and sets the stage for Claremont's magic There are a couple of ways to read this run and Kriss & Dpalm used two different methods. Dpalm's Reading List (X-Men/Uncanny X-Men #94 - 138) Pre-Phoenix Saga Uncanny X-Men #94 - 100 - Claremont takes over as the writer of the X-Men and starts building towards Jean becoming the Phoenix Uncanny X-Men #94  - First appearance of the Shi'ar Uncanny X-Men #97 - First (official) appearance of Lilandra Phoenix Saga Uncanny X-Men 101 - 108 Proteus Saga Uncanny X-Men #125 - First Appearance of Proteus Uncanny X-Men #127 & #128 Dark Phoenix Saga Uncanny X-Men #129 - 138 129 - First appearances of Hellfire Club (Sebastian Shaw, Emma Frost), Kitty Pryde 132 - First appearance of Harry Leland & Donald Pierce Kriss's Reading List (Classic X-Men 1 - 44) Classic X-Men 1 - 44 tell the same story but also have additional short stories after the main story in each book that are written by Claremont years later that flesh out the characters & story. Examples: Classic X-Men #2 - Jean & Storm's forming their friendship Classic X-Men #3 has the X-Men dealing with/mourning the loss of Thunderbird Classic X-Men #8 - This expands on what actually happened to Jean when she merges with the Phoenix force. It's a deeper explanation of her sacrifice and why the Phoenix bonded with her Classic X-Men #12 - Magneto's Holocaust origins, losing his daughter in a fire and moving the character into a more sympathetic light All of the stories are great and really dig into the characters and are must read Like what you hear? The Comic Book Bears are thrilled to bring back to the show for a second time special guest Steve Lightle! You will know Steve from his decades long association with the Legion of Super-Heroes and as a prominent cover artist (Classic X-Men and The Flash among others), not to mention interior work on a host of titles. In recent times Steve has been the writer and artist of the webcomic Justin Zane.  As Steve details on his website Justin Zane "is the name of a hit tune in 2769 A.D., as well as the name adopted by an incredible mental patient on the satellite asylum known as "the TOMBS."  He lost his freedom because he is too dangerous to be free - or so they are telling him.  The psychiatrist assigned to his case is the intelligent and beautiful Doctor Glimmer Starborn - but she seems too good to be true.  Then there's the matter of the glamorous newscaster Catrina Fellina, the anarchist skrok band known as The Idle Reich, and the destruction of Yasgur's Planet." Steve goes into some of his future plans for Justin Zane, the supporting cast (which includes a character Steve created when he was six years old), his influences, a little bit of the Legion, working for the big two, his artistic process, The Beatles, sci-fi authors Steve loves, H.P. Lovecraft and horror comics ... and as an exclusive he lets us in on a big Justin Zane secret!   LINKS:   http://stevelightle.wix.com/justin-zane   https://www.patreon.com/Lunatick_Press   Intro - "Reflection of You" by Bear in Heaven   Outro - "86" by Green Day
