Kelsea Ballerini visits with Evan Paul to talk about her new ‘Patterns' album. Specifically, (4:45) she explains why a couple songs include curse words — it's so relatable. Also, (3:15) how does Kelsea actually spend time with famous friends like Shania Twain and Carly Pearce? That can't be easy in public but she's got a trick. Plus, (9:30) why Chase Stokes loves the breakup song on her album, how her role on ‘Doctor Odyssey' came to be and (13:15) her pick for CMA Entertainer of the Year. Then the Night Cap with Billy Dukes. Also mentioned during this episode: Tigirlily Gold, Ella Langley, Taylor Swift, Reese Witherspoon, Chris Stapleton, Lainey Wilson and more.
Miranda Lambert joins me (Evan Paul) to (1:10) talk about her personal — but not autobiographical — ‘Postcards From Texas' album and why certain types of songs still scare her. Then (4:30) she explains her choice for CMA Entertainer of the Year and responds to Lainey Wilson sweet comments about her from last summer. This interview covers a dozen topics but my favorite is when (13:10) she talks about how her husband Brendan still drives like a New York City Police Officer. I can totally relate! We also get into Beyonce, Post Malone and more. (19:11) Billy Dukes also joins for the Night Cap. Also mentioned during this episode: Morgan Wallen, Eric Church, Hardy, Emmylou Harris, Willie Nelson, George Strait and Chappell Roan.

He has sold over 70 million albums and won CMA Entertainer of the Year 5 times, that and a whole lot of other accolades. Hank Williams has come to be known as a person who speaks his mind. Better or worse. You might know him from the theme song for the NFL's Monday Night Football. It was based on his 1984 hit "All My Rowdy Friends Are Coming Over Tonight", it ran for decades! His daddy before him had a hard drinkin' hard livin' life and so did Hank Jr., as well as his son Hank III, let's start things off with "Family Tradition": That was my personal favorite, "Whiskey Bent And Hell Bound". And more about the "Family Tradition" that preceded that song. Shelton Hank Williams, known as Hank III, his son is now performing as the next generation Hank, Coleman Williams as simply IV. He just released his debut music this past April. And there is also Jett Williams, Hank Jr's step-sister. And Holly Williams, Hank III's half-sister, I love her 2014 song, "Waiting on June". Here is more Hank Jr with "If the South Woulda Won" off of 1988's Wild Streak: That was "A Country Boy Can Survive", one of Hank Jr's most enduring hits and a fan favorite. Bocephus as known by many and the name given to him by his daddy. Named Bocephus after Grand Ole Opry comedian Rod Brasfield's ventriloquist dummy. Hank Sr. died at a young age and when Hank Jr was only 3 years old and raised by his mother Audrey. Here is "My Name Is Bocephus": Audrey, Hank Jr's mother had him performing his daddy's hits all over the country and Hank Jr. resented being known as an impersonator of his father. He tried putting his own songs into his live sets of his daddy's songs, but the crowds were not pleased as they had come to hear Hank Williams songs. He would start changing his style and coming into his own despite the crowd reaction. Hank was almost killed in 1975, during a mountain-climbing accident in Montana, where he fell 500 feet. After taking years off and many surgeries, he returned more focused and what would become his career defining period. When he reemerged he had grown a beard and started wearing sunglasses and a Cowboy hat, this would become his signature look. Here is a song made popular again by Alan Jackson on his 1999 covers album, "Under The Influence", here is Hank doing "The Blues Man": Times are good around Austin and the Country... interest is down and the Stock Market's up; and let's pray that it stays that way. But it was during what is now known as the Great Recession that Bocephus released his last big single and I love it. I doubt I'll hear it tonight, so we will play it now, this is "Red, White & Pink-Slip Blues". --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tiny-curations/message

Multi-Grammy award winner Loretta Lynn is an American music legend. The Kentucky native married as a young teenager, moved to Washington State, and had four children by age 20. She poured her energies into life as a homemaker before teaching herself to play guitar and write songs. Her life experiences informed her writing style, which gave voice to the concerns of everyday working class women. She landed a record contract with a regional label and tirelessly promoted her first single, “I’m a Honky Tonk Girl,” to radio stations across the country. The record climbed to #14 on the Billboard country chart, leading to a move to Nashville. After appearing on the Grand Ole Opry and signing a songwriting deal with the Wilburn Brothers’ publishing company she was recruited to Decca Records by legendary producer Owen Bradley. Loretta went on to place more than 75 singles on the Billboard country chart as either a solo artist or as a duet partner with Ernest Tubb or Conway Twitty. More than 50 of those singles hit the Top 10, including 15 #1 hits. Many of her classic songs were self-penned, including “Dear Uncle Sam,” “You Ain’t Woman Enough,” “Don’t Come Home A’ Drinkin’ (With Lovin’ On Your Mind),” “Fist City,” “Your Squaw Is on the Warpath,” “Rated X,” “The Pill,” and “Coal Miner’s Daughter,” which NPR named one of the “100 Most Significant Songs of the Century.” She has received a combined 21 awards from the Country Music Association and the Academy of Country Music, including the ACM’s Artist of the Decade Award in 1979, the Pioneer Award in 1994, and the Crystal Milestone Award in 2014. She became the first female to win CMA Entertainer of the Year honors in 1972 and became the first female ACM Entertainer of the Year in 1975. She was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1983, the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988, and the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2008. She received Kennedy Center Honors in 2003, earned the prestigious BMI Icon award in 2004, took home a Grammy Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2010, and was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2013. She has sold more than 45 million records worldwide, was the first woman in country music to receive a certified Gold album, and has been a member of the Grand Ole Opry for nearly 55 years.

Our guest from Episode 5, Travis Thrasher, has had a busy year. At the time we spoke to him this past spring, he was promoting the release of his novelization of Home Run – just a few months after publishing the fourth and final book in the Solitary Tales series, Hurt: A Novel. This summer, he published two more books, both collaborations: Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not? with country artists Thompson Square, and the self-published Never Let Go with Mac & Mary Owen. Finally, in October, he releases his fifth book of 2013, Time For Me to Come Home, another collaboration, this time with Dorothy Shackleford. Dorothy is perhaps best known as the mother of 2013 CMA Entertainer of the Year, Blake Shelton.Time For Me To Come Home Now, Travis is one of our favorite folks, but even we didn’t feel like we could keep up with everything he has been up to. Joe caught up with him earlier this month and brings us all up to speed. Also, Travis has generously offered to answer your questions about the publishing industry and life as a writer.
