As Jesus's public ministry/life on earth was drawing to a close there seems to be desperation…or a sense of urgency in Jesus. He had made a dent in meeting people and getting his message out there. But there were so many more souls to reach. Jesus never wavered. He remained steadfast. He never went off brand despite being constantly questioned by the religious leaders who were set on catching him in a lie or at least getting him to answer them in a way that could be misconstrued or taken out of context.  Continue reading the show notes on our website Nothin' But Fine.---Check out the Nothin' But Fine blog and website.Follow us on social media: Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube Want everything in your inbox? It is hard to believe that we have now come to the last ten chapters in this wonderful book of Psalms. As I have been reading through the Psalms over the years and especially these past couple of weeks I have noticed a recurring theme throughout the book. David, who wrote more than half of the psalms is constantly crying out for God to help him as he faces difficult trials and desperate situations. It is a repeated theme, over and over again, that you can't help but see. David did have some wonderful highlights in his life, like when he killed Goliath and became a national hero overnight. But for most of his life after that he was plagued with trouble, evil and wicked men who sought to destroy him, family issues beyond imagination with even his own son leading an insurrection against him. God had a special way of keeping David humble and totally dependent upon the LORD for deliverance and help. Honestly that is the best position to be in ourselves! When we understand that we desperately need God every day of our lives and in deep humility acknowledge our total dependance upon Him, we will find like Paul, that when we are weak then we are strong because it then that the power and glory of God is reveal to us and in us! God uses circumstances, uses people and a host of other things to get our attention so that we will keep our eyes upward looking to Him in our desperation for the help we need! Psalm 141 ties into the two previous psalms with this theme. In Psalm 139 after David speaks of how God marvelously and wonderfully created him, all of a sudden he cries out in verse 19, “Oh, that You would slay the wicked, O God! Depart from me, therefore, you bloodthirsty men.” Psalm 140 begins with, “Deliver me, O LORD, from evil men; Preserve me from violent men, Who plan evil things in their hearts; They continually gather together for war.”   Psalm 141 begins with, “LORD, I cry out to You; Make haste to me! Give ear to my voice when I cry out to You”. The enemy was after David again and he needed immediate help. It has been suggested that David wrote this psalm after his cave experience with Saul (1 Sam. 24), or perhaps he wrote it when he was away from the sanctuary during Absalom's rebellion. This psalm reveals David making a number of wise decisions as he faced the attacks of the enemy. He does at least five things. First in verse 1-2, David determines to seek the LORD's help. Whenever the enemy caused trouble, David's first response was to pray. "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" (27:1). He was a man with spiritual insight who understood that he could pray and worship God even if he was away from the sanctuary and had no priest to assist him. Each evening, the Jewish priest would offer a burnt offering on the brazen altar and also burn incense on the golden altar, but God accepted David's prayer and uplifted hands. Frankincense was usually included with the burnt offering. (See Ex. 30:1-10, 34-38; Lev. 2:2.) Incense is a picture of prayer going up to the Lord (Rev. 5:8; 8:4). David's hands were empty but his heart was full of love for the Lord and faith in His promises. Both Ezra (Ezra 9) and Daniel (Dan. 9) prayed at the time of the evening offering. After the second temple was built, this psalm was read when the evening sacrifices were offered and the lamps were lit in the holy place. My friend, in the time of our desperation the first thing we should do is also seek the Lord with our whole heart! “I sought the LORD, and He heard me, And delivered me from all my fears” (Psalm 34:4) God bless!

A Desperate Man's Desperate Prayer | Text: Jonah 2:1-10 Opening Statement: When last we left Jonah, he was in the belly of the great fish. He was in a bad fix and a bad way. As Jonah drops down into the belly of this fish, feels the great heat perhaps, and breathes the putrid air, he realizes where he is, even though he is in the dark, and further recognizes that he is without hope and beyond help. God is allowing Jonah to experience a taste of what the Ninevites will experience in judgment – hopelessness and helplessness if no one goes to them. Today we are going to discuss “A Desperate Man's Desperate Prayer.” I) God Teaches Us When to Pray (2:1-3) I suspect that the most fervent and powerful prayer Jonah ever prayed was from the belly of a fish. The first ingredient of Jonah's prayer is admission. Now, notice that Jonah admits this is God's hand of discipline in verse 3. At this point Jonah is no longer resisting the will of God; he is no longer rejecting the word of God – he is about to re-enlist in the work of God. However, first, there is admission of his wrongdoing and the right of God to discipline. Now he is on his way to restoration. II) God Teaches Us What to Pray (2:4-7) The second ingredient of Jonah's prayer is restoration. Notice verse 4. Up to this point, everything about the life of Jonah has been in the opposite direction of God's authority. Now, Jonah is admitting his sin and turning back to the temple of God – a statement of recommitment for the Old Testament saint. Did you catch this? Jonah would not pray before – he wanted to run from God; he did not want to speak for God. He would not even pray to God for the sake of these frantic sailors who were afraid of drowning, “I'm not on speaking terms with God.” Now, however, Jonah says, yet hast thou brought up my life from corruption, O LORD my God. Sinclair Ferguson writes, “Isn't it marvelous that God has mercy upon His servant Jonah before Jonah will preach that God will have mercy on Nineveh.” III) God Teaches Us Why We Should Pray (2:9-10) The third ingredient of Jonah's prayer is appreciation. Keep in mind that Jonah has not been given a promise of deliverance. He was not thankful because he was back on dry land. He was not thankful that he had not drowned. He was thankful that God had turned his heart from rebellion and had caused him to call on the name of the Lord once again. Jonah was thankful for his salvation. What can Jonah sacrifice? He cannot sacrifice an animal – he has been swallowed by one. So, what can Jonah sacrifice to God now? He has gone too far – what can he offer to God? Jonah can offer to God the same thing we can. When David repented and wrote Psalm 51, a great hymn of repentance, he wrote, The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise. (Psalm 51:17) As Jonah offers up to God the sacrifices of a repentant heart and a humbled spirit, God sends down the biggest case of indigestion any fish has ever experienced, and this fish spits up Jonah onto dry land. In Closing: Is there something in your life that God is desperately trying to get your attention about? Is there something God wants you to repent about? Remember running from God always leads down, while repentance always takes us upwards. Two stories that originated in the OSS Superfinals: Race caller Ken Middleton tells us what it was like to describe his own horse stunning the field in the 2 Year-Old Pace and we talk with all 4 owners of Desperate Man, the $20,000 purchase who won both the North America Cup and his Superfinal. As the quarter horse season winds down, there was a race at Ajax Downs that took less than 7 seconds. Jennifer Morrison's recap is worth the price of admission. Moira Rose, the incandescent star of Schitt's Creek makes a guest appearance and how, you may ask, does a classic Seinfeld episode get into our podcast? Not going to give it away, but we can say that trainer Darryl Ezra has a unique argument as to why his horse should not have been disqualified from 1st in a race at Fort Erie.

Has horse racing in Ontario ever looked better? It was a week full of huge Stakes races – The Pattison International and the Ricoh Mile at Woodbine, the Canadian Trotting Classic and the Elegant Image among a buffet of Stakes races at Mohawk and the $400,000 Prince of Wales Stakes at Fort Erie. Kevin Attard and Gary Boulanger talk about winning the second jewel of the Triple Crown with Haddassah. We have Kathy Cecchin, the trainer of North America Cup champion Desperate Man and Kathy's daughter Nikki Davies talking about their amazing win. Included in this podcast is a wrap of the weekly card at Ajax Downs, an insane sequence that produced two dead heats within 25 minutes on Racing Night Live and two consecutive races at Monticello Raceway that only Trump's base could love. All of this plus Elvis and Prince.

I have easily interviewed a few thousand people in my career as a moderator and interviewer. I can honestly say that Interviewing my twin brother about his book, Conversation with a Desperate Man, was one of the toughest interviews I’ve ever had to conduct. It isn’t easy hearing someone you love describe the pain they’ve faced in their lives and the darkness that enveloped them. But his story isn’t a tragedy; far from it. It’s actually a love story and you will hear how Jim was able to overcome the challenges he faced. I had to cut it into two parts because, frankly, it’s a lot to take in at once. Also, Jimmy can be a bit long winded, but I didn’t want to cut anything. Look for the second part to be released this Friday. If you know someone who would appreciate listening to this interview, please share it with them. Jim’s book is available for sale now in paperback or ebook formats wherever books are sold online. Why not show a little love to your local independent bookshop and ask if they can order it for you?  As always, thanks for listening.

As we continue our Portraits Series with this sermon entitled, "The Untouchable", we will learn more about Jesus. Jesus is the Great King of Kings, The Good Shepherd, and The Savior who shows compassion to all of us - sinners and rebels. In this sermon, Ps. Heath Flanagan will share more about His work and compassion towards The Untouchable by focusing on these three main points of the story, The Desperate Man, The Deeper Touch and The Dynamic Life. It is by encountering Him, surrendering to Him, trusting in Him and letting Him do His work in our life that we will surely be changed to become more like Him, day by day. After hyping it all year, it’s finally time for the official preview of the Fall Scramble at Prairie Landing where Charlie will defend his 2x and defending long drive championship and our group will defend skins glory (the only payout in 2017). Augie took a couple go-arounds at Sox Park (we refrain from using field sponsor titles since they change often unlike Wrigley Field - Go Cubs) in his first experience playing Stadium Links. No nitro pours but there were Nitros, home runs, human range pickers and MLB inflated beer prices… followed by a super late night casino run. Charlie details his derailed attempt to play Ravisloe and audible to Lost Marsh. A very industrial area serves as the end to a great ball streak - find out how it all went down. For every end there is a new beginning - and this one might be yellow. We review the Ryder Cup European ass kicking of the Americans. You may or may not have heard of the Moliwood pairing on the pod prior to it actually happening. Hey - sometimes we know what we’re talking about. In Tour news, Kevin Tway comes up with his 1st tour victory - we detail his lengthy path to his well-earned W #Gainz. Charlie has a dream that includes Tway. Koepka (Augie’s horse $$$) won Player of the Year - unshockingly. Him and DJ try to emulate Moliwood. Lagunitas Citrusinensis fuels the ep. Song adds include Charlie’s double feature of “Save Room” and “Stereo” by John Legend. Augie goes back to the Eric Church well with the newly released “Desperate Man” title track.

There are two sides to every story. We at See Hear HQ decide to look at both sides of the contentious question as to whether record collectors (and by extension, collectors of any physical item) are archivists or hoarders.   Tim, Bernard and Maurice are joined by Professor Michael Benton from Bluegrass Community College in Lexington, Kentucky for episode 49 of See Hear to talk about two films that explore record collection from two very different angles.   Australian film maker Edward Gillan’s documentary from 2003, “Desperate Man Blues” is a snapshot of the record collecting activities of Joe Bussard from Maryland. Bussard has been collecting old country, blues and jazz 78s from the 1920s through to the 1950s. At the time of filming, he had anything from 15000 to 20000 records. His knowledge of what we currently call Americana is unsurpassed. He has a genuine joy in listening to and sharing the music he has spent a lifetime collecting.   On the other side of the coin, Toronto documentarian Alan Zweig’s first feature length film, Vinyl puts himself and many other record collectors under the spotlight to ask what prompts them to “accumulate” records. Zweig’s contention is that the music takes a backseat to the gathering of records – all for the sake of the hunt. He tells many of his interview subjects that they (including himself) cannot form meaningful relationships with others, and so record collecting manifests itself as a substitute for human interaction. Far from flattering. Is this film just cheap therapy for Zweig or is he just playing devil’s advocate to get discussion going?   The crew discuss the different approach taken to the subject matter between the films, as well as how close to home these films (Vinyl in particular) may have hit. You may collect DVDs, model aeroplanes, matchboxes…….the ideals of historical preservation vs accumulation for its own sake still hold. Should we judge? Tune in for what we believe to be a fascinating and robust discussion.   The crew wants to thank Michael for joining us for his first See Hear episode – it will not be his last. Alex thanks all of the listeners for helping bring "No Holds Barred" to 250 episodes. It is a legitimate landmark, and it is owed all to you out there who listen and participate to the show. As far as wrestling news, Alex talks about a slew of bad booking decisions made at "Bragging Rights" and RAW this week. Wade Barrett and John Cena has been mishandled, and why in the world did Sheamus lose to Santino? Also, how much does a potential Edge and Kane championship feud excite you? The Brock Lesnar and Undertaker news is touched upon. Alex thinks that it's incredibly unrealistic, as Vince McMahon needs this a lot more than Dana White, but it's still something to think about a little bit. The "piledrivin' post of the week" (www.thesportsstuff.com/boards) is handed out in the "Finisher" segment, where Alex once again engages in the debate regarding the pro's and con's of WWE TV.
