It's a simple plan this week: We're just looking at what was on television in late May of 1981. Including: A bizarre Happy Days musical, a horrifying Waltons episode, Mork in a bubble, skydiving Hulk, something called "Women Who Rate a 10," Bo Duke with amnesia, Daisy Duke on Enos, Batman on Fantasy Island, a Muppet on a medical drama, a dead parrot at Mel's Diner, and way too many variety shows (from Bob Hope, Steve Allen, Robert Klein, the Gatlin Brothers, and the Mandrell Sisters). It all sounds wonderful, doesn't it? You should probably cancel Netflix and invest in a time machine. The Mayor of Chickentown on The Doctor's Beard podcast! And our regular links... Send us a textWe have finally arrived to the final day on the trail for George H. W. Bush , Bill Clinton, and Ross Perot. It had been an election for the history books, as hard a fought battle as I had ever witnessed in my then short lifetime. You could not have asked for more formidable candidates to face each other than the three men who had shared the national stage together over the past year. Each with enormous strengths and each with well thought out strategies for victory on that first November tuesday. In this episode we will visit in on the final two rallies of the 1992 election for Bill Clinton and George H. W. Bush. We could not find a final rally for Ross Perot as we combed our videos and the internet, so for that we apologize. What will stand out to our audience we think is the final Bush rally because it will feature for the final time , the old guard of politics and entertainment standing on stage with President Bush in Houston. For many of them this was their final Presidential campaign as the leadership of the nation. The President will be joined by Charlton Heston, Ted Williams, The Gatlin Brothers, Naomi Judd, and the legendary entertainer Bob Hope. The last hoorah for a generation of American leadership in both politics and entertainment. The next day George H. W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and Ross Perot would face the voters from sea to shining sea. Automatically Transcribed With Podsqueeze Speaker 1 00:00:00 This Kent Hance, I hope you enjoyed part one of the interview with Rudy Gatlin. He's a great interview, a great American, and you're going to love. Part two. What's the worst place you ever performed? You know what I mean? Just a a dive. We were fortunate that. Speaker 2 00:00:21 We didn't work too many of those because we started had enough success. And we're making a little money on the road. And we I mean, we weren't taking a lot of money. We weren't making a lot. We were existing. We were living paying the bills, but we didn't have to work, and that wasn't our deal. I love, you know, good country, western, two step and honky tonk music, but. And Houston and lady takes the cowboy and but we we cut 28 records, 28 albums of other types of music. Great ballads write wonderful songs. Larry wrote a bunch of great songs, and we made a bunch of great records. But we thank you, Lord. Because they'd have been throwing beer bottles at us. Speaker 2 00:01:06 What Roy started doing done. Enough dying today. I've done enough dying today to get back to the honky tonk songs. We needed the chicken wire. Speaker 1 00:01:17 That. That's when, Roy Clark tells about the time that it threw some beer bottles at him and some other things, and he finally, we went. He refused to go back to that place, and they said, won't happen anymore. And they had the they had chicken wire in there so people couldn't throw things at them. You know. Speaker 2 00:01:36 When he was doing what he was doing yesterday when I was young, I remember that hit record. Speaker 1 00:01:41 That was a great song. I mean, one of the best that was rent. Speaker 2 00:01:46 They said, get back to Good God and Greyhound. You're gone. Speaker 1 00:01:50 Yeah. Thank God and Greyhound you're gone. But yesterday. Speaker 2 00:01:54 Song. Speaker 1 00:01:55 Yesterday was, written in France and, recorded French. And then somebody got Ahold of it and decided to do it in the United States. And then several people recorded it. And Roy Clark was the the most famous of the ones that did. Speaker 2 00:02:13 Great. Speaker 1 00:02:13 Songs. I know a little about music, not much, but, Speaker 2 00:02:17 And I do know that Porter and Dolly are your favorites. Speaker 1 00:02:20 Yeah. That's right, that's right. You got me up two tickets, I said at one time in class, I said I wouldn't take my dog to see Porter and remember it. Speaker 2 00:02:30 And I remember. Speaker 1 00:02:31 Y'all went out. Speaker 2 00:02:32 And bought. Speaker 1 00:02:32 It. You went out and bought tickets and some dog food and a leash and put it up on the the table where I came in. I came in to teach, and there it was. There's one of those, large classes that was in the small auditorium, and, I could look and there was 100, 150 people in there, and you were the only one that had written on your forehead. Guilty. I mean, I could just I could tell that you had been involved, but I liked it. And it was a lot of fun. A lot of fun. Speaker 2 00:03:05 Yeah. I thought I was smarter than that. Speaker 1 00:03:08 No, you had Gilti written all over you. I got it early on. What? What's the best place? You know, I asked you the worst you could, but what's the nicest place? Speaker 2 00:03:19 Dallas, Texas. Anywhere in Dallas, Texas. Speaker 1 00:03:23 Was always nice. Speaker 2 00:03:25 I'm in Dallas right now at my daughter's. We have a love affair with this city. Going back to when we sang gospel music as a gospel quartet. Right. From Odessa, we traveled to Dallas and Fort Worth and Mesquite and all over Texas. But we came to Dallas to sing in Oak Cliff, Oak Cliff, Assembly of God church. Sure. See? Noah. Whoa, man. Speaker 1 00:03:50 Hey, hey. When the religious music. When you were gospels and everything. What were some of your favorites? Because there's a lot of people listening, and they remember when we used to sing hymns instead of being bop of Jesus. Speaker 2 00:04:05 Well, our first song was I Woke Up. I wish I had my guitar. I've got my guitar in there. Speaker 2 00:04:10 I woke up this morning feeling fine. I woke up with heaven on my mind. I woke up with joy in my soul. Because I knew my Lord had control. I knew I was walking in that light. Because I'd been on my knees in the night. I pray to the Lord gave me sight. And now I'm feeling mighty fine. Yes, I'm feeling mighty. Speaker 1 00:04:34 That's good. Speaker 2 00:04:35 So first song we ever learned. In fact, I think we won that talent show. Singing that song. Speaker 1 00:04:40 That's good. But the standbys are amazing grace. And what a friend we have in Jesus. And y'all, y'all would sing all kinds of. Speaker 2 00:04:51 Well, we sang a lot of those songs, like our heroes, the Blackwood Brothers Statesmen Quartet that came through Abilene, Odessa, Lubbock. We bought the records, took them home and put them on the high five and played those. And mom got up on the piano and we just started singing. Joe knew how to, you know, God just said, y'all sing. Speaker 1 00:05:16 And you. Speaker 2 00:05:17 Know, he he gave you the ability to to understand law and all that stuff. You I, I, like I said, I can't spell be much less understand, you know, lawyer doctors. How do they understand all the, Michael Jordan can shoot a basketball? Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler can hit a golf ball. Speaker 1 00:05:41 A long way. Speaker 2 00:05:43 now I'm a I'm a I'm a I'm a better golfer. I'm than he is a singer, I guarantee you that. But God just gave everybody a talent because. And we developed it a little bit, you know, worked, sang in school And. Speaker 1 00:06:00 One year when, Alan White, he had that big party in Dallas headed out to Cowboys Stadium, and, y'all performed in. Your mom was there, and we we left. I was with y'all in a bus. They were taking us to to another part of the city and, had a great visit, and told your mom that you were a great student and everything. And she kind of grinned at me and said, you don't have to lie. Speaker 1 00:06:34 She she had a good sense of humor. Speaker 2 00:06:37 Yeah. I think she found out about that first semester away from home. Well, see, that was my first semester away from home. Curley Gatlin was a firm disciplinarian. Love. I love my upbringing. Mama, you know, wouldn't take anything for it. But, you know, they were firm. And I had to go to Odessa College and live at home for two years. And when I hopped in my 68 Volkswagen In 1972, headed north through Andrew. Boy, I was I was up all the way up to 65 miles an hour, probably on my way to Lubbock. I was free as the first time I'd ever been on my own. So. And like I said, I took too many hard courses, learn how to drink beer and play poker. But I made up for it and graduated and all that. Thankful for them. And they're there. You know, I try to a lot of people say you're just like your daddy. Speaker 2 00:07:29 And I say, thank you. Speaker 1 00:07:31 Sure. Speaker 2 00:07:32 Thank you very much. Mother drove us from Odessa to Dallas on Highway 80. Chancellor. Odessa. Midland. Big spring. Sweetwater. Abilene. Speaker 1 00:07:48 Eastland. Cisco. A Ranger. Ranger here in Weatherford. Speaker 2 00:07:56 Weatherford. Fort worth. Dallas. She one time we sang at Oak Cliff Assembly of God Church nine Sundays in a row, one. Speaker 1 00:08:06 Summer, and she'd take you back and forth every, every Sunday. Speaker 2 00:08:10 Before. Larry had his driver's license. And one night we stayed and did Sunday night service. The next day, I woke up in my bed in Odessa. On highway 80. Trucks, cars. You know how much. You know how much you miss cars going that way about like that. Speaker 1 00:08:34 Yeah. Speaker 2 00:08:37 And she drove us home and put it. Got us to bed. Got us up for school the next morning. Speaker 1 00:08:43 You were lucky. You you were fortunate. You had great parents, great parents. Speaker 2 00:08:49 And daddy was an oil field. He couldn't go with us. Speaker 1 00:08:51 Yeah. Speaker 2 00:08:52 Momma drove. We went to California a couple of times. New York one summer. Yeah, that. Great parents. Speaker 1 00:08:59 Well, it's a great training for you. What? What would you say to any young person that's looking to go into the music business today? Speaker 2 00:09:11 Bless their hearts. I'm. I'm so glad we came along when we did, because. But I can go pull a guy off the street and say, hey, man, we can get a guitar around you and you can start singing and make you a record and get you a website, get you a publicity agent and get you an agent and get you down here singing at so-and-so and do all this. Guess what? So can everybody else. There are just there's no gatekeeper anymore. There used to be a gatekeeper, and that was the A&R artist and repertoire person at the record company. If you couldn't sing and play your butt off, they weren't going to spend 100, $150,000 on making a record because they had to sell them if they didn't think they could sell them. Speaker 2 00:10:02 And they got money back. You weren't going to get a record deal. So there's. And the internet. Thank God. I mean, everybody's getting to live their dream and fulfill, you know, chase their dream and and everybody all chase your heart and. Yeah, we did. We did too. But if it hadn't worked out, I guarantee you I'd. I'd have gone and done something else. I'd I'd have taken that business law, by golly, diploma and walked right into First National Bank. Speaker 1 00:10:33 Well, you you could have been an accountant since you loved accounting so much. Hey, talking about performers. Who were some of the best people that you got to know and got to know well, and that recognized you the minute they saw you and and that were good people and encouraging type people. Speaker 2 00:10:51 Johnny cash. June Carter cash. Roy Clark. Speaker 1 00:10:57 what kind of guy was Roy Clark? Speaker 2 00:11:00 Great guy, great talent, great singer. Very entertaining. Entertaining, a great entertainer, good guy. John and June Cash. Speaker 2 00:11:09 Dottie West brought Larry to to Nashville. Roger Miller. Well, you name all those old guys, and we know them, and they know us. Speaker 1 00:11:18 Roger Miller was, originally from Shamrock. Or somewhere up in between, Shamrock and Eric, Oklahoma or something like that. And, you know, he he can't roller skate in the buffalo herd was one of his big ones. Speaker 2 00:11:35 But you can be happy if. Speaker 1 00:11:36 You if you if you have a mind to trailer for sale or rent, you know. He had a bunch of them. Speaker 2 00:11:43 You know what Roger said? Speaker 1 00:11:44 What? Speaker 2 00:11:46 You know, it don't make sense. That common sense don't make much sense anymore. isn't that good? Speaker 1 00:11:54 It is. Rudy, thank you so much. you've you've been great. You've done so well. And and you really inspired those students when you and you didn't talk with about 7 or 8 minutes and you told them how much the school meant to them and how much it meant to you and what you wanted to do. And I think the only thing you said, you wish that your mom and dad could see you walk across that stage, and that would have been neat, but, well, in anything. Speaker 2 00:12:22 They had the best seat in the house. Speaker 1 00:12:24 They did an ending. What the the thing that kept you from walking across the stage. I was going to ask that. Explain to the listeners what happened that caused you from not being able to walk across the stage. Speaker 2 00:12:40 Well, I had 64 hours when I went to from Odessa College. four of them didn't transfer, so 60. And I was I guess I was close to being a junior or whatever. The one of the semesters we had a couple of concerts in LA at the old Palomino Club in LA. And then we went to Vegas for a week to work in the Vegas Lounge, which was a great lounge. And Glen Campbell was in the main room. Well, I said, good Lord, I can't take that. I can't take that much time out of school. So I took two courses. One of them was Doctor Bowling Corp. Finance, and another one was another. So I just took eight hours that semester and I made a D in Corp. Finance. Speaker 1 00:13:29 That's easy. Speaker 2 00:13:30 To do. I told you the story. He wouldn't give me one point. Speaker 1 00:13:34 I had to. Speaker 2 00:13:35 Take it again. So I just passed three hours. That one semester I got behind. I was behind 12 hours. I made it up the next couple of semesters, but in the spring of 74, I was still 12 hours short. I took four, I was going to take four summer school classes. I took the first two. I'm going to take the next two. And they cancelled that real estate course and I went, oh no. And at that time, you remember, you could not take any correspondence to your last 30 hours. It had to be on campus. Right. And I said, I'm going to Nashville. I'm going to sing, I can I'm not I can't stick around here for three hours. They said they made an exception. I thank them, thank you, Texas Tech. I took the course. I went to Nashville, sent my lessons in, came back home in December, drove to Lubbock, took the test, passed it, finished all 130 hours. Speaker 2 00:14:37 Right? Speaker 1 00:14:38 Right. Speaker 2 00:14:40 And so it's December 74th, but I got them all in. That's why I didn't get to walk. And those turkeys that taught me how to drink beer and play poker, they graduated on time and walked that May. I just got through talking to them a couple of days ago. Speaker 1 00:14:57 Well, they had learned they had those first two years to learn how to do it. And you didn't have those two years you were still at home. Speaker 2 00:15:05 I was ready. I was a rookie. They were they were. Speaker 1 00:15:09 They were. Speaker 2 00:15:09 Professional veterans. Speaker 1 00:15:11 That's the reason you got to be careful on New Year's Eve, because the amateur drunks will be out and they'll run over you. You know. Speaker 2 00:15:17 They'll screw up the weave. Speaker 1 00:15:19 That's right. They'll mess up the weave. Speaker 2 00:15:21 That's that. That's why straight people don't go. That's why I don't go drive. Because when I'm driving straight, I'm going to mess up the weave. Speaker 1 00:15:28 Yeah, mess them up. Rudy, thank you very much. We've enjoyed it. Speaker 1 00:15:33 And thank you. Tell your friends to listen to the Ken Hance, best storyteller in Texas. And they'll get to hear people like Rudy Gatlin.
In Part 1 of this two-part series, Kent engages in a lively conversation with Rudy Gatlin, a member of the renowned country music group, the Gatlin Brothers. Kent opens with a humorous anecdote about a "seniors GPS" and shares his experience attending a cold inauguration in Washington, D.C. The discussion then shifts to Rudy's family background, the Gatlin Brothers' early days in Texas, their move to Nashville, and their first hit song, "Broken Lady." Rudy also reflects on the evolving music industry, highlighting the impact of digital platforms and streaming services on artists' royalties.
The next artist in the 1980s to receive an album overseen by the Gibbs was Kenny Rogers, with his 1983 album 'Eyes That See In The Dark'. Stuart and Cristiano return to this buried treasure as they discuss side one of the album. As expected from a collaboration with Rogers, country influences are abound, with appearances from Dolly Parton and the Gatlin Brothers. And with Barry and Maurice taking on a majority of the song writing, there is a return to the style of the early 1970s, with the simplicity and refined quality of the compositions, all of which is proven by the astounding set of demos on which this album was founded. AppleamazonFacebookYoutubeInstagramGable Burnett's new song “Trouble” starts off with a bang and takes off from there in a flat dead rocking country run. Her career as a recording artist, beginning with “Trouble,” should follow the same trajectory. “Should” not only because she writes some great music and “should” because she has the talent and the power voice, but “should” because she is working it.The song is clearly country, but rock is also in the mix, in generous measure. She agrees with that opinion to an extent. “I think it's all subjective at the end of the day. With the rock style instruments we put in there, we have a kind of rockabilly, old school sound, but people who are hardcore into rock and the sub genres of rock might not consider it rock.”However it might be considered, the music is fun and danceable and the lyrics are fun and listener singable. You will be singing it out loud before you know you're doing it.“Trouble,” which she co-wrote with Andi Renfree, who wrote “The Buffalo Grass” for Chris LeDoux, is the first song in this new phase of her career. She has been performing for years, and for the last couple has been putting out music on the streaming platforms, but with new manager Lisa Kyser of Ten East Ten West, she now has direction.Gable has pulled her previous catalogue and it will be re-released in the distribution plan for her music. Before 2018, she was in opera as part of a studio in Richardson, Texas, and did opera kinds of things, like singing in seven different languages and performing in the Carnegie Hall honors series, where she won some scholarship money. She participated in National Association of Teachers of Singing competitions “and all this kind of high classical stuff.” “But I really didn't start trying to figure out what I wanted to do and performing more of what I wanted to do until 2018, when I moved to Nashville. Even though I had that classical background and education, I knew I didn't want to be a teacher and I knew I didn't want to sing opera over in Europe, and those are pretty much the only two options you have in that classical path.” Country at first wasn't in the running for what she wanted to do. She was “messing around with pop and different stuff,” but her family didn't want her to go to Los Angeles or New York. Family friends connected to the Gatlin Brothers suggested country. “At the time, the main thing was the Florida-Georgia line and a lot of bro country, and there's nothing wrong with that, but it just wasn't my style. I was like, ‘Oh, I don't want that. I don't want to sing about boots and trucks and blah blah blah.' And they said, ‘No no no! You're good. Listen to some Johnny Cash and Dolly Parton. Here's some artists and some songs. Go listen to that and come back.'”She took the advice.“They were right,” she said. “I love the storytelling aspect. I love the history behind it. I love the culture behind it. I love everything about country music. It ties into so much of my life, where I grew up and everything, that I was taken aback that I hadn't discovered how wonderful it was sooner.”She paused for a second, thinking about that, then said, “Well, I grew up in a household where I was only allowed to listen to Christian music for years.” She says now her two main inspirations are Dolly and David Alan Coe. She also references The Judds, Patsy Cline, Tammy Wynette — “all the women who've been really big in country music, who've come before me and definitely paved the way for me to be able to do what I'm trying my best to do.” When she says “trying,” she means putting in some hard work. “This is basically the start of everything for me,” she said. “I've got four jobs, and both my parents helped me, too. I got all these different side hustles just trying to make the dream come true.” She has shows booked in August, more songs ready to put out, “other things in the pipeline that we're getting pre-recorded to put out after thatBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/creator-to-creators-with-meosha-bean--4460322/support.

Kim tells us about her latest project: investigating a notorious murder and trial in Dallas, which Kristi says pre-empted the city's "decadent eighties". "Nashville Recording Artist Singer/Songwriter Lee Newton, came from humble beginnings. Having seen her share of hard times growing upa small town in Western North Carolina, she started singing in church when she was five years old when her Mother would take her. Lee's love of music grew as a child when her Daddy played country classics like Hank Williams, Loretta Lynn, Tammy Wynette and Patsy Cline around the house. Lee's father, a cab driver, taught her to play the guitar at age seven and they would sing together while she rode around town with him in his taxi going on calls. “My Daddy, who named me Brenda Lee after the amazing country singer, would always tell me one day you will be playing at the Grand Ole Opry and from that point on I knew I wanted to be a performer.” Heavily influenced by legendary musicians like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, The Judds Lorrie Morgan Susan Tedischi and Lynyrd Skynyrd, Lee's personal sound is a mix between traditional Country and raspy Blues with an added Southern Rock flare. When Lee was 20 years old, she joined a couple of bands and taught herself to play the drums. She travelled to New York City and had the privilege of singing backup for Artimus Pyle, Leslie Hawkins and JoJo Billingsly – three original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd. In 2020, Lee won “Vocalist of the Year” at the Josie Music Awards. Her 2021 EP Undamaged, which she wrote, won “EP Album of the year” at Josie Music Awards and also Top 20 Best of 2021 for Women of Country. The Gatlin Brothers need no introduction. You all know at least one of their songs. All the Gold in California was one of my favorite songs as a little girl, and it still is. I am fortunate to have grown up around some pretty spectacular people. I am lucky to be able to take my podcast on the road and set up in the kitchen of Steve Gatlin's home, the same home that I spent countless nights at as a child. ---Check out the Nothin' But Fine blog and website.Follow us on social media: Instagram Facebook Twitter YouTube Want everything in your inbox? Country music artist Gary Alexander spent most of his childhood in a poor upstate South Carolina town. He was just a teenager when his mother died suddenly, and soon after, his alcoholic father left him to his own devices. With no other path open before him, he made his way to Myrtle Beach, and what unfolded is a story of courage, hard work, and a little bit of luck. By chance, Gary wound up at a Gatlin Brothers concert in the 1990's, and that encounter inspired a career which, in time, would put Gary on the same stage as the Gatlin's themselves! Gary's is a gut-wrenching story of forgiveness for a father who destroyed so much yet also inspired a successful career.

Growing up in a musical family, she started her collection of classic country vinyl at an early age and was gifted many country albums belonging to her great-great-grandmother. Bailey Rae had been singing in church for years and after hearing of a vocal coach in Denison, Texas, she began performing with the Shawnda Rains Entertainment Group. Golf talk live from the iconic Deep Eddy Cabaret with hosts Ed Clements and Scotty Sayers. Guest this week is Larry Gatlin.
As a child growing up in New England, Scott's early interests and training were in the fields of music, tap dancing, magic, acting, and sports. In between his schoolwork and hours spent working at his family's diner, (which Scott claims helped his character acting skills immeasurably), Scott acted with several regional companies, as well as with the Boston Children's Theater. As a musician, Scott had a treasured involvement with the Boston Pops Orchestra, playing in the percussion section during the final year of legendary conductor Arthur Fiedler's reign. Scott also played with numerous jazz, rock, and show bands throughout the New England area.Scott moved to New York in 1978 and first worked as a bouncer/bartender in a disco directly across the street from Dangerfield's, the famous nightclub named after the well-known comedian. After watching the celebrity names revolve weekly on the marquis of that establishment, Scott decided to test his talents on a Monday night at Dangerfield's. Rodney immediately liked Scott and took him on the road where he successfully worked for three years as Rodney Dangerfield's opening act. Since then, Scott has worked with many superstars including Ann Margret, Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Huey Lewis and the News, Tom Jones, Julio Iglesias, Perry Como, Tony Bennett, The Gatlin Brothers, Tim McGraw, Faith Hill, Celine Dion, Cher, Clint Black, and many more. Scott's headlining status has been enjoyed at the Mohegan Sun Casino Resort in CT, the McCallum Theatre in Palm Desert, CA, and other premium venues throughout the United States. Scott also performs in Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe, and in Atlantic City, where he was voted the Best Variety Act of the Year by Atlantic City Magazine. Scott is one of the most requested headliners on several of the world's most elite cruise lines. Corporate appearances make up yet another large percentage of Scott's current schedule. Golf is one of Scott's many passions. He currently headlines as well as competes in many of the major Pro-Am events sponsored by the PGA, LPGA, USGA, and the Seniors Tour. He has headlined at several Phoenix Open, the Player's Championship, and the Bay Hill Classic, in which he played in the Pro-Am with Tiger Woods and won that event! Scott also participates in many fun- raising charity tournaments, including the Bob Hope Desert Classic, the Kraft Nabisco LPGA Championship, and the AT&T Pebble Beach.

In this episode, the Freedom Forum's Cathy Trost, chief engagement officer and senior vice president, and Patty Rhule, chief content officer and vice president, share more about some of what the Freedom Forum has found in their annual First Amendment survey and what they heard from recent focus groups with residents of Union City, Tenn. While they've found Americans see the First Amendment – which protects our essential freedoms of religion, speech, press, assembly and petition – as vital to our democracy, many worry there is a lack of understanding about those five freedoms. That's one of the reasons the Freedom Forum is headed to Discovery Park for their inaugural First Amendment Festival. Admission to the park on the day of the festival is FREE with registration. Fox News anchor Bret Baier will speak about his career and the First Amendment, and country music legends The Gatlin Brothers will perform. Larry wrote every Gatlin Brothers hit and more. He wrote songs that were recorded by others, like Elvis Presley, Glen Campbell, Barbra Streisand, Johnny Cash and many others. He's written an autobiography called “All the Gold in California,” a nod to the title of one of his hit songs. He's won numerous awards and has seen success on and off of the stage. Last October, Larry was inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. Special Thanks to… Larry Gatlin for his time and for the use of some of his music in this episode. The oldest of the three Gatlin brothers, by age six, he was already accompanying younger brothers, Steve and Rudy in singing at family and church events. After high school, Larry went to the University of Houston on a football scholarship. Larry majored in English and developed “a love affair with the English Language” that later served him well in his songwriting. On the strength of his songwriting talents, Larry Gatlin became known throughout the Nashville music industry. While Steve and Rudy were finishing college, Larry was already touring the small club and listening room circuit as a solo act, looking forward to the time when he could afford to expand his live show to include his brothers. From 1976 to 1992, the brothers toured extensively throughout the United States, Canada and overseas. They racked up hit after hit and banked some of the most prestigious awards in the industry. Larry penned every Gatlin Brothers hit you've ever heard. He has written songs that were later recorded by Elvis Presley, Glen Campbell, Barbra Streisand, Johnny Cash, Kris Kristofferson, Barry Gibb, Ray Price, Tom Jones, Roy Orbison, Johnny Mathis, Dottie West and many more. Kirt Webster has masterfully worked the dials behind the screens to illuminate his chosen land of the fantastic and the fanciful with bombastic bursts of eventful and often awe-inspiring sound and lights. So has been his approach to the land of entertainment. Webster has been nothing if not the skilled ringmaster of the artistic—a man in charge of directing the sequence of the three-ring circus that is show business. He came by his flair for the business of entertainment quite naturally. His early absorption in music and his relationship with his uncle, Murl “Doc” Webster, who was successful in the carnival trade, left the young Kirt with a fascination for the artistry and ‘smoke and mirrors' skill it takes to entertain an audience, or successfully direct the business careers of those that do.Growing up in Arizona he chose the inroads of country music radio and live touring concerts to provide access to the fringes of his dream of working with major artists in Nashville. As a teen, Kirt would dummy fake “all access” backstage passes to get closer to the pulse beat of the music industry and to the performers he was listening to on radio and now meeting on tour. Worthy to note that several of these “road built” relationships were destined to become his earliest publicity clients. Associations that would become long-term business relationships and friendships included major name artists of the day such as Janie Fricke and Freddy Fender who met him initially on tour when Kirt was still too young to vote.In 1995, and just breaking 20, Webster packed his Chevy S-10 Blazer with dreams and determination to reach for the stars and headed for Nashville. Setting up Webster Public Relations — first in his small apartment and soon after in a cramped space on Music Row, he soon became “the buzz” in the small town music clique of Nashville. His reputation of working 24/7 in pursuit of news placement for his clients combined with his innate ability to create “events,” that made news, quickly positioned Webster PR as a fast runner.Throughout the late 90's and early 2000's, Webster PR grew into a nationally known and respected creative home-turf for major country artists such as The Bellamy Brothers, Carl Perkins, The Little River Band, Lee Greenwood, Crystal Gayle, and The Gatlin Brothers. With Carl Perkins' passing in January 1998, it was his young publicist who helped orchestrate the top names in music — names such as former Beatle George Harrison, Ricky Skaggs, Billy Ray Cyrus, Wynonna — and even former Beatle Paul McCartney on video — to gather in Jackson, Tennessee, and celebrate a legend they had loved in a star-studded final tribute. In 2002, Webster scored a major move into representing the iconic with his signing of Hank Williams, Jr. A year later, at the request of Johnny Cash's longtime manager, Lou Robin, Webster was asked to help stage the now memorable Cash Memorial event held at the historic Ryman in Nashville. Webster worked with Robin on several Cash projects and it was even noted in the book, “The Man Called Cash,” how Kirt became a valued personal friend of Johnny and June . Orchestrating press that flew in from around the world and major artists that flocked to Nashville from literally every genre of music and performing arts, Webster's help in staging the tribute event for Johnny Cash proved to be a labor of love as well as a flawless movement of people and creativity. With his gift for “creating media magic” for the legendary careers as well as his own personal astute sense of the entrepreneurial, Webster's reputation and client roster exploded exponentially. By the mid 2000's Webster PR was the principal major publicity agency in Nashville to specialize in television and facilitate major network TV ties for their clients — CMA Awards and ACM Awards

His work ethic definitely shows when you see that he has played with some of the most iconic country music artists in the business; Reba, Alabama, Ricky Scaggs, The Gatlin Brothers and many more. In sacramento to promote the new Gatlin Brothers Music Gity Grille in the downtown area, Rudy was able to spend almost a half hour with us in person in our studio at KRAK 1140 AM. Since we were still playing Country Gold, and all the legendary artists, Rudy was thrilled to visit a station that featured he and his brothers songs. Mike Remy, my newsman was a big Gatlin Brothers fan and shared in the interview with Rudy. We talked about the industry changing focus with many stations only playing new artists. Rudy was honest about how he felt about it and where he saw the music industry going. Check out the interview with a fun guy who in my opinion, is a country music legend.

Gary Alexander cut his teeth in music by listening to his father’s records (Charles Alexander & The Carolina Five) on local jukeboxes around South Carolina. At 11 years old his personal journey in music began on 2 strings on a guitar he bought for 12$. “I couldn’t play chords because I only had 2 strings and well, because I did not know any. So I figured out how to tune the 2 strings to an open chord. I began writing songs straight away”. At 15 after the death of his mother Gary found himself living alone. He packed a bag and headed to Myrtle Beach SC. After struggling on the streets and sleeping on Ocean Blvd. Gary began to rise above the adversity. He soon began working for Country music stars Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers. Larry was a source of learning and inspiration for Gary and the term ‘Songsmith” began to take real meaning. Performance and the writing began to be two separate crafts. At the advice of Larry, Gary took a job with the legendary ‘Opryland” company performing in San Antonio. After a year of being exposed to and absorbing the Texas music sound Gary headed to Nashville TN to record his first demos at the Gatlin Brothers studio. With a 4 song Demo in Hand Gary decided to get back to his roots and moved back to Myrtle Beach. The demo began to make it to the airwaves of radio stations in Charleston, Greenville, Myrtle Beach, and Columbia SC. While performing in the night club circuit Gary began to perform as the comedian at Dolly Parton’s Dixie Stampede. Myrtle Beach was on the rise musically with the insurgence of Country Music stars opening theaters. Gary began to perform as Emcee for the National TV and Radio show “Crook & Chase”. In 2001 Gary was in need of change and inspiration. He caught a plane to Italy and boarded a cruise ship to perform for Celebrity Cruise lines. 9-11 occurred while Gary was in Greece. Being so far from home and away from everything familiar He began to write new material. An E.P. of this material was recorded in Brooklyn NY that unfortunately would never see the light of day. 2002 came and a random phone call brought Gary to Vegas for the next 11 years. After performing on the Vegas strip in show rooms Gary began to work in a new professional direction. Mixed Martial Arts (UFC) was exploding and Gary found himself in the fight capital of the world. Gary hosted an independent Online On Demand radio show called “The Ultimate Podcast”. This propelled Gary into the heart of the sport. Fighters Only Magazine soon came calling and Gary became the US Operations manager for the launch of their North American Editions. Vegas weighed heavy on Gary and eventually the Ocean was calling and he once again found himself at home in Myrtle Beach S.C . with new songs, a new outlook, more life experience and focus than ever. The musical journey that began listening to his father’s records on jukeboxes now continues as Gary has come full circle and come to terms with his musical identity and embraced all muses that come his way. “In so many ways it’s like a parallel to THE ALCHEMIST by Paulo Cohelo. My story is about finding treasure that was always under my feet, no matter where I was standing”. https://music.apple.com/us/artist/gary-alexander/434096629. https://open.spotify.com/artist/4YPZnDn2jjE5pWReSUL45R?si=a-Yr5JVDTMGjdbheimGaiQ
Legendary singer-songwriter Larry Gatlin shares some of his songwriting tips, including how to steal from yourself at times! He talks about how growing up in church and listening to Gospel music greatly influenced his (and his brothers') style of harmony. Larry shares a story about beating out a local band fronted by the great Roy Orbison in a children's music competition in Texas. He discusses being brought to Nashville by famed songwriter Dottie West, whose house acted as a music-motel for other up and coming songwriters, such as Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson. Larry dives into great detail on the stories, inspirations, and writing processes behind many of his hit songs, including “Houston,” “I've Done Enough Dyin' Today,” and “All The Gold In California.”Performances:“Houston” - Larry Gatlin“I've Done Enough Dyin' Today” - Larry Gatlin“All The Gold In California” - Larry GatlinTo stay up to date with Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers, head on over to https://www.gatlinbrothers.comMore info on Songs From The Cellar & details on how to watch the TV series can be found at https://www.songsfromthecellar.comKeep up with Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers on Social media at:FacebookInstagramInstagram (Band)TwitterTwitter (Band)SpotifyFollow Phil Vassar and Songs From The Cellar at:FacebookInstagramTwitterYouTubeSpotifyCheck out more awesome podcasts at:American Songwriter Podcast NetworkAnd go!

Today I'm joined by Rudy Gatlin, member of the famous country band ‘The Gatlin Brothers'. Rudy joined the band and started making music aged just two and a half, meaning he's now played music for over 65 years. In that time he's played for presidents at the White House, won multiple awards, and was named number one in Golf Digest's ‘Top 100 in music'. We talk about how live streaming has taken off since the pandemic and how making music has changed over the years. Rudy also tells me what his main influences were, and what he gets up to when he's not with his brothers making tunes… ”We've been singing in some form since 1955 and we're not gonna quit. When they get some dirt and cover my ass up, I guess that's when I'll quit. Why quit!?” – Rudy Gatlin Time Stamps: 01:39 – Where Rudy lives and the state it's in with the pandemic. 02:42 – The Livestream concert Rudy's putting on. 05:05 – How Rudy got into live-streaming. 09:55 – How long the stream will be and what it's going to be like. 12:55 – What Texas was like in the 60s. 16:13 – What a Hog Call is and where Rudy started playing music. 18:28 – The diversity there is in Texas. 20:15 – The way the church helped keep certain types of music alive. 22:05 – The music influence Rudy had at school. 24:31 – What makes a good choral director. 26:00 – The music that was big in the 60s. 29:00 – Where they went to listen to music that they couldn't listen to at home. 30:37 – The tribute album they're making. 36:06 – Rudy's love of golf and the charity work he does for ex-servicemen. 41:09 – The first award Rudy won and how his music career started from there. 47:05 – The harsh realities of the music industry. 51:25 – The difference in discipline there was in the 1960s. 54:57 – The different merch they have and where to find it. 59:30 – Eating quail and its availability in Texas. 1:02:46 – The cancelling of The State Fair of Texas. Today, Steve talks with country music legend Rudy Gatlin of the Gatlin Brothers about their career and the songs that have kept them making music together for nearly six decades.
This week the legendary singer Larry Gatlin invited us into his man cave to talk about his long, colorful journey inside the country music industry. Subscribe and download on your favorite podcast platform: Apple Podcasts, Google Play, Tune In, Stitcher. The Grand Ole Opry star shared moments from the time he and his brothers beat out Roy Orbison in a talent contest as children, to almost singing with the Imperials and backing up the king, Elvis Presley. Never shy and always with a flair for the dramatic, Larry talks about helping Kris Kristofferson find Jesus, touring with Dottie West and personally surviving an addition to drugs and alcohol. He's also not immune to controversy. As we'll find out, Larry wrote a song paying homage to the homeless and some of the offended burned Gatlin Brothers records in Arkansas. But he and his brothers have always bounced back into the spotlight, where their blood harmonies have mesmerized fans for generations. Our host, Robert K. Oermann and the series producer, Brad Newman guide us through this candid, revealing look into one of country music's most entertaining stars. Like us on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter and Instagram. We want to know what you think. Pitch us an artist, or simply spread the word and find out more about the series. #childrenofsong
EXILE formed in 1963 looking to play small clubs in Richmond, Kentucky, but managed to top both the pop and country charts during their over 50 year-long career. Their most successful hit, “Kiss You All Over, spent four weeks at the top of Billboards pop chart in 1978. In the early 1980s EXILE start to focus on country music. During their run on the country charts EXILE has successfully had ten No. 1 singles including “I Dont Want To Be A Memory and “Give Me One More Chance. They have toured with acts including Aerosmith, Fleetwood Mac, The Oak Ridge Boys, The Gatlin Brothers and The Judds. The 5 original EXILE members reformed in 2008 and continue to tour today. Current members of the band include J.P. Pennington, Les Taylor, Sonny LeMaire, Marlon Hargis and Steve Goetzman. THE MARTIN FAMILY CIRCUS is vocal-driven melodic band of 2 parents and 4 kids ranging in age from 9-18 with a rich soaring blend of family harmonies which Rolling Stone magazine calls “exuberant. Dad, Grammy-winning artist Paul Martin and lead singer/guitarist of country-pop group Exile, and Mom Jaime, daughter of Duane Allen of Country Music Hall of Fame members The Oak Ridge Boys, began singing together with their four children in 2010. Quickly realizing that the kids all showed an uncanny knack for hearing harmonies and pitch, as well as for playing instruments, they began performing shows together. They were soon dubbed the Martin Family Circus by Country Music Hall of Fame member Vince Gill. The band's newest CD project is 'Past, Present, Future'.
Todays guest is a musical one, who is striving to get to the top of his chosen career. And it certainly seems that at the moment, the hustle, the talent, the perseverance, and the passion are doing just that, and he is building a momentum that is getting him noticed in the country music world. With the release of his debut album, It's All Country, in early 2012, (and its re-release in 2013) he has showcased his signature sound, which he cultivated from years of touring camps, churches and conferences across the US. Even playing in an airport once, to impress a pretty girl for one of the band members, he has blended the traditional influences from country music's past, like the Gatlin Brothers and Kenny Rogers, with modern contemporaries like Toby Keith and Trace Adkins. He has created an original, honest and authentic sound all his own. Which is a key point to todays discussion. With so many influences smashing into us everyday, how do your separate and become yourself, and not become a pale imitation of someone already out there? An ordained pastor, he served at the Cowboy Church of Anchorage, Alaska, but now has moved to the spiritual home of his style of Music, Nashville Tennessee, where if the idea of the quickest way to success is to surround yourself with other like minded people is true, was the perfect decision to make. So when did he decide that he wanted to make a go at a career which has beaten so many people in the past? And was uprooting his family and bringing them across America to pursuit his dream, an easy or hard decision to make? Well lets find out as we bring onto the show to start joining up dots, with the one and only Doug Briney.
How in the world do you discover some of the true kings of new wave pop music all the way out in Bellingham, MN? Well, it involves not going to sleep like you've been told, a little bit of belly crawling, and super spy-like hearing. Tim Dybevik and I take a ride with The Cars debut album, and also manage to discuss the Statler Brothers, the Gatlin Brothers, being the self-appointed Cars expert in a class size of 16, trying to find the lastest releases at a Pamida, and taking your kid to daycare while singing along to the Ramones.

Doug Briney embodies all things country: His personality is warm and inviting, some would say down-to-earth, recalling the disposition of many a Southern Gentleman from yesteryear. With a 2013 Independent Country Music Association Award, eight months on the Roots Music Report charts, international airplay and live performances at CMA Fest, Rodeo Alaska, The Iditarod, The Grinder's Switch Hour, Alaska State Fair, and Dan McGuiness' on Music Row, among countless others, this God-fearing road warrior, with the warm baritone voice and love for all things southern, has released his aptly titled Super Country Cowboy. On this album, Doug has created a tasteful blend of yesterday's traditional country roots and today's radio-friendly contemporary sounds, to invoke all the best that is American: Love of God, Family and the US of A.With the release of his debut album, It's All Country, in early 2012, (and its re-release on CBM Records in 2013) Doug Briney showcased his signature sound, which he cultivated from years of touring camps, churches and conferences across the US. “We even played in an airport once, to impress a pretty girl for one of the band members,” he says with a laugh. Blending traditional influences from country music's past, like the Gatlin Brothers and Kenny Rogers, with modern contemporaries like Toby Keith and Trace Adkins, Doug created an original, honest and authentic sound all his own. The collection of well-known country hits and new covers peaked at #6 on the Roots Music Report True Country chart, where it remained for 8 straight months. The album also charted at #11 on the itunes Country New Release chart, with 3 singles receiving international airplay and chart action, leading to more than 300,000 Youtube views between them.In February 2013, Doug signed with Tate Music Group, home to country legends like Lee Greenwood and Neal McCoy. In November 2013, Tate released Super Country Cowboy, a brilliant and heartfelt collection of compositions from some of today's best country songwriters. From the Charlie Daniels-meets-Big & Rich-influenced title cut (Top 10 RMR,) to the inspiring, “I Get To” and the patriotic anthem, “Unknown Soldier,” Doug delivers nine emotion-filled, hook-laden tracks that are purely Doug Briney: heart-felt, passionate and proud. The album reached #58 on the itunes Inspirational chart and #8 on the Roots Music Report True Country chart, earning Doug a Nashville Universe Award nomination for Best Male Artist, a 2014 ICoMA Award nomination, and a 2014 Artists In Music Awards nomination.A 2013 move to Nashville, Tennessee has brought Doug to the epicenter of the country music industry. Grateful for being able to live his dream of performing and recording music, he has gladly given back to his community in a big way. Surrounded by a history of veterans and military service in his family, (his son currently serves in the Air Force) Doug has begun working with Bright Star International, who will help facilitate Doug's work with veterans' charities, and Heart Songs For Veterans. He is also donating 100% of his proceeds from the sale of the single, “Unknown Soldier” to Operation Troop Aid.An ordained pastor, Doug also served at the Cowboy Church of Anchorage, Alaska, prior to his family's relocation to Music City, USA. He is currently serving as a pastor with North Pointe Community Church in Old Hickory, TN. In fact, it's his unwavering faith and love of country music that has led Doug on his journey.“I have come to know and love the Cowboy Lifestyle through country music…And, it is who I am now, who I have been, and who I will always be.” --Doug Briney

Doug Briney began like so many other musicians, singing in church. His first solo was when he was two years old. He continued singing throughout high school and then graduated in 1988 from Pacific Coast Baptist Bible College as a Vocal Music Major. During his college days, Doug had the opportunity to sing with a gospel quartet and travel all over the western half of the USA. He also had the unique opportunity to sing with the San Diego Opera Chorus. After graduating Doug went on and has spent the next 23 years leading worship in churches and pastoring. Being a country musician in Anchorage, Alaska is fun and exciting. Doug relates to the song, I Was Country, When Country Wasn't Cool. Growing up in Southern California, all of his friends were into rock while he was listening to Kenny Rogers, Lee Greenwood, Tom T. Hall, Eddie Arnold, Alabama and Larry Gatlin and the Gatlin Brothers. Today his influences would still include those but he's added Chris Young, Toby Kieth and Ronnie Dunn to his list of major influences. Doug's first full CD, titled, “It's All Country” is now available right here from the music page or for digital download from iTunes, Amazon or CD Baby. Doug is very happy with this project and believes it will reach out and touch people right where they live. Songs such as: “Deja Vu” “Second Dance” “It's More Than Just a Farm” all speak to the things in life that really matter.
