The planet's not dying. Our place and our version of it may be dying. So how do we deal with that? How do we accept and live with the knowledge that our version of it is dying. It's not something to panic about in the sense that the whole thing's going away, hopefully. We don't know, but I think that notion of living with grace, living without fear, trying to live without anxiety, because those are just places where we flounder, shut off and develop toxic escapes.(photo of Kenneth Newby by Linda Ofshe)I first met Kenneth Newby in 2023 at the infamous Lunch Lady Vietnamese street food restaurant on Commercial Drive in Vancouver. We mostly talked about a book he recommended to me, Learning to Die : Wisdom in the Age of Climate Crisis by Robert Bringhurst & Jan Zwicky, which was transformative for me.Kenneth is a fellow new music composer and sound artist with whom I shared many ecological concerns including aspirations for the role of art in this era of environmental decline. So, I invited him to have a conversation, my second last of this 5th season, where we have been exploring how to 'prepare for the end of the world as we know it and creating the conditions for other possible worlds to emerge'.Kenneth now lives in Victoria. We recorded our conversation in his backyard on September 23rd, 2024. We talked about his journey as a composer and musician, from childhood lessons, experiences in blues bands through to interactive music systems, Indonesian gamelan music and psychedelic experiences, among others.During our exchange, I was thankful that he shared examples of some of his creative projects that integrate storytelling, ecological awareness, and collaborative solutions about societal and environmental issues. It's good to hear about both theory and practice. For example, I was interested in Kenneth's work on the harmonic series as a fractal structure and how he connects it to ecological concepts and ways of being. My approach has been typically to look at the inner life of a sound, try and tease it out and create some kind of soundscape, a composition that's made out of those inner materials and so I was hugely influenced early on by Cage's notion of silence and sound and Schafer notion of the soundscape and an acoustic ecology. You'll also hear some of Kenneth's music in between 3 sections of our conversation. First is Aria - Ocean of Storms, an excerpt from his ‘Seasonal Round' project created in collaboration with poet Robert Anthony, which is composed of raw, time-stretched, transposed birdsong. You'll also hear Howe Sound, a composition featuring birdsong, a frog chorus and transformed excerpts from Maurice Ravel's Sirènes movement of his Trois Nocturnes as well as excerpts from Crépuscule for Barbara written for harpist Barbara Imhoff.Kenneth recommends the following books and film:The spell of the sensuous : perception and language in the a more-than-human world by David AbramWoman in Nature : The Roaring Inside Her by Susan GriffinFantastic Fungi*Sections of the episode (generated by AI and reviewed by Claude Schryer)IntroductionClaude introduces Kenneth and reflects on their previous meeting. They discuss their shared backgrounds in music and philosophy, setting the stage for a deeper conversation about art and the ecological crisis.Kenneth's Musical JourneyKenneth shares his early experiences with music, starting with piano lessons and moving through various musical influences. He recounts pivotal moments in his life, including his time at the Creative Music Studio in Woodstock, which ignited his passion for electronic music.Cultural Exploration and LearningKenneth discusses his fascination with Indonesian music, particularly the gamelan traditions, and how immersing himself in different cultures has shaped his understanding of music and postmodernism. He emphasizes the importance of cultural relativism in appreciating diverse artistic practices. The Ecology of SoundThe conversation shifts to the relationship between music and ecological issues, exploring how sound can reflect and address the ecological crisis. Kenneth introduces the idea of the harmonic series as a fractal structure, connecting it to ecological concepts.Art and Environmental AwarenessKenneth reflects on the impact of his music and the broader role of artists in raising environmental awareness. He discusses the challenges of making a significant impact through art while acknowledging the importance of collective efforts in the artistic community.Community Engagement in ArtThe discussion turns to the importance of local community engagement in artistic practices. Kenneth shares insights from his projects that focus on situating art within the community, emphasizing the need for relevance and connection in contemporary art.Facing Complexity and ChangeKenneth addresses the complexities of the current ecological crisis and the fear associated with change. He discusses the role of psychedelic experiences in fostering a deeper connection to nature and how they can help individuals navigate the uncertainties of the future.Literary Inspirations and RecommendationsAs the conversation nears its end, Kenneth shares his favorite books and films that explore ecological philosophy and the interconnectedness of life. He highlights the importance of literature in shaping our understanding of nature and our place within it. *END NOTES FOR ALL EPISODESI've been producing the conscient podcast as a learning and unlearning journey since May 2020 on un-ceded Anishinaabe Algonquin territory (Ottawa). Small business owner Anita Dunn made headlines recently when she announced she was closing her high-profile Mila and Paige clothing store this spring. In her announcement, Dunn took direct aim at a raft of city-related decisions and initiatives that she believes led to the demise of her retail shop. Whether it was skyrocketing parking rates or the impact a lengthy sewer replacement project took on her business, Dunn says it all played a role in helping to keep customers away. She's also concerned with the recent trend to concentrate so many social service providers in the downtown core. She highlights why opening a 'temporary' homeless shelter nearby with only limited hours has actually served to increase street disorder along Columbia Street. “The city is sending a message to everyone visiting to get in and get out. So how is this ever going to be a tourist destination? It's not,” she said in video she posted on her Instagram account. “So I'm angry. I'm really angry at the city.”In this exclusive interview, Dunn not only explores the problems plaguing small business owners in New West, but she begins to talk about what some of the solutions might be. We ask her to compare Columbia Street to Vancouver's popular and thriving Commercial Drive in terms of its vibrancy. We explore with Dunn whether there is anything we can learn from their success and apply in New West.Dunn also responds to some of the vicious online attacks that have been hurled at her since she spoke out and talks about how other small businesses in the area are equally fed up - but frightened to speak out. Joining Dunn on the podcast is fellow Columbia Street small business owner and New West City Councillor Paul Minhas. We also get to have a bit of fun with our latest edition of Bell or Buzzer! It's an important interview that's bound to stir up debate, but one you will want to listen to and share with friends and family. This podcast is available for download on all major platforms.

Meet Lindsie: I'm passionate about a few things: My family (my husband and I have two young sons named Dante and Enzo) My community (I love being part of a real Vancouver neighbourhood) Travel (I even wrote a book about Traveling with Kids) Writing (Check out my latest article for REW.ca here) Wine (no need to explain!) People (my friends and my clients, who often become friends) Real Estate Being outdoors (especially hiking, SUP and biking) But I'm even more passionate about helping my clients find the home that is right for them. I specialize in helping families who have outgrown their current home, usually with the arrival of a wee one. Who knew someone so small could take up so much space? With the arrival of a baby, you start to think about things that you hadn't before. I love guiding clients through the process of finding the neighbourhood that they want to raise their children in. I also love helping first time home buyers through the excitement and nervousness of buying their first property. It doesn't have to be scary! WHERE I LIVE Before we had kids, my husband and I lived in a condo in Kits, which we adored. After our first son was born, our one bedroom and den condo suddenly became too small (sound familiar?!) so we bought a house near Commercial Drive in East Vancouver. If you live in the area and have kids, you've probably seen me around the playground, the ice rink or Community Centre at Trout Lake. If you live in the area and don't have kids, you've probably seen me shopping at Donald's Market, running around Trout Lake, sipping a coffee at The Prado cafe or enjoying a chocolate chip zucchini muffin at JJ Bean. WHICH NEIGHBORHOODS DO I SPECIALIZE IN? I work in all areas of Vancouver (including outside of Vancouver proper like North Van, Burnaby and Port Moody). I specialize in East Van because it's my 'hood and I know the schools, parks, restaurants, community centres and ammenities like the back of my hand. COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT A portion of every one of my sales go to the Children's Miracle Network as well as Backpack Buddies. The children's hospitals supported by the Children's Miracle Network provide comfort, treatment and hope to millions of sick kids each year. In Vancouver, our donations go directly to the BC Children's Hospital and last year, our RE/MAX office raised more than $24,105. Backpack Buddies is a unique program that addresses a very real need in Vancouver that most of us don't think about. There are many kids that attend inner city schools that rely on lunch programs throughout the school week. When the weekend rolls around, many of these kids will remain hungry until they return to school on Monday. Backpack Buddies provides a backpack filled with food for these kids to take home, because hunger doesn't take the weekend off. In 2002, I was a part of Joints in Motion, raising over $4,000 for the Arthritis Society of Canada and running my first marathon in Honolulu. In 2003 & 2005, I joined Team in Training, raising over $10,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada. I also volunteer every year with the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and the Vancouver International Wine Festival (formerly the Playhouse International Wine Festival). I love heritage houses and wine! It's one of the places Vancouverites go to socialise, to have fun, and to catch their bus and their train. It's Commercial Drive in East Vancouver.
