(free crochet pattern on Ravelry). Yarn has a lot of twist, got all tangly and we stayed after to untangle it together while other cast members performed on stage. On the first night of rehearsal one of my cast-mates asked about my knitting and through that conversation we figured out we've worked together before. She was the choreographer when I was in a production of Crazy for You at a local community college when I was in high school. I wore my Aurealis sweater (Ravelry Project Page) one night to music rehearsal and my friend Deana complimented it and I told her I knit it! Laura's sock drawer! It was obviously a bittersweet trip. Ryan Wilson said it best when he said before talking about 2 winners- in some ways this is the most important year because its the first one without Mom and we're still doing it. Peter Brook the legendary English theatre and film director once said, ********“I can take any empty space and call it a bare stage. A man walks across this empty space whilst someone else is watching him, and this is all that is needed for an act of theatre to be engaged.” Lets talk about the need for such a space with Atul Kumar. Atul Kumar is The Company Theatre's founder member. An acclaimed actor and director with more than 30 years of performance experience, Atul has dabbled with different languages and forms of theatre & has showcased his work all over India & abroad. His basic performance training was in the traditional Indian dance and martial art forms of Kathakali and Kalerippayettu in Kerala for over three years as well as a stint with the master of visual theatre - Philippe Genty in France. More about him in the show notes. Today we'll deep dive into The Company Theatre Workspace, Kamshet as a case study. Questions What is The Company Theatre Workspace at Kamshet? What inspired you to make such a place? Was it the influences from Aadishakti, Nrityagram or Footsbarn theatre group? There is a beautiful 10 minute video on youtube where you briefly explain the backstory of this place and how it came to be. Do you want to share more details like which were the other 3 spots you shortlisted and why chose this over others? Why was your “want to” list huge? What were your pre-requisites? Why do you call it a laboratory for theatre and performing arts? When I see your Instagram page, artists are doing all sorts of things from Tai Chi, Yoga to just running around and doing theatre drills, packed with high intensity body movements. What do you do in the space? You mentioned that “we don't always expect artists to do something specific but just be by themselves”. How does this help? Reflection, introspection anything else? For outcome oriented projects, people need structure to think, how does this place facilitate it? (Philosophical) Everyone needs time to pause and reflect. Do artist need more of it? Why? Can you tell us more about the place? How does the place accommodate for experimentation? Geography, topology, open space, residency and other things about the place? What's the future? Do we need more such spaces? Do we have similar places in India? Some mentions about your wonderful and dedicated to art team? NEW SEASON! NEW START! Guest: Tim Porter, Artist Director and Founder of Tweed and Company Theatre Taking inspiration from the show business motto, "the show must go on!" Hybla Minute is back! And this time it's all about the show as it concerns Bancroft's Village Playhouse. Under the new direction of Tweed and Company Theatre and its Artist Director, Tim Porter, the Village Playhouse is undergoing many good changes and we talk about them and also how the pandemic effected, not only Tweed and Company, but theatre in general. With the light at the end of the pandemic tunnel (we hope), theatre is a wonderful way to gather again and fall under the magic of everything theatrical. With an ambitious and exciting season ahead of them and the what the plans for the new theatre, Bancroft has gotten a lot sexier. And there is a quiz and a giveaway. We're excited to announce that the winner of the free ticket to see local hero opera soprano Hannah Crawford perform is JOEY SHULMAN! So excited that Joey won, because he's mentioned in the podcast - big news! And the Quiz. I can't believe I won! Tim did his best, but it was a gratifying win all the same. Here are the questions that Tim didn't get and I had to look up later. 1) Dora Mavor Moore Mavor is her name before she married. It's not a middle name. 2) The oldest theatre in Canada according to Wikipedia: The Royal Alexandra Theatre, commonly known as the Royal Alex, is a theatre in Toronto, Ontario, located near King and Simcoe Street. Built in 1907, the 1,244-seat Royal Alex is the oldest continuously operating legitimate theatre in North America. The Annapolis Basin in Nova Scotia served as the cradle for both French and English language theatre in Canada. Théâtre de Neptune, performed in 1606, was the first European theatre production in North America. The tradition of English theatre in Canada also started at Annapolis Royal. In Fort Anne, Nova Scotia, plays were produced for Prince of Wales' birthday. George Farquhar's The Recruiting Officer was produced on Saturday, 20 January 1733 to celebrate the birthday of Frederick, Prince of Wales. The music from today is a piano roll version of Scott Joplin's The Entertainer. Because? Thank you for listening to Hybla Minute and thank you to my guest Tim Porter. Great to be back! Last month my friend Margaret Nichols interviewed me for her website and I enjoyed the conversation so much, I had to have her on the podcast ASAP. In today's episode we talk about navigating big life transitions, acting out as an adult, spiritual kryptonite and the areas of yoga that most people miss out on. About Margaret Nichols: A writer and consciousness cheerleader in Manhattan, Margaret Nichols is a recognized leader + trainer in the Oneness Movement. Having been involved since 2006, she trained with monks in India and Fiji and now teaches in New York and as well as mentoring other trainers nationally. The goal of “Oneness” is to “help set humanity free.” They let Margaret do this with high heels and great hair, so she is very pleased about that. Although teachers, influences and studies are too numerative to list here, in addition to her vast Oneness fam, and the ongoing Ultimate grace of Sri AmmaBhagavan, in 2006 she lived in India while studying with the late contemporary yogi master Sri K Pattabhi Jois, and had a continued Ashtanga practice with master teacher Eddie Stern and his awesome crew of teachers in New York. They and many others get mad gratitude for any grounding she might have. Om! On the artistic front, Margaret has been a professional, award-winning actress in New York City and internationally for a decade and a half. Since 2001 she’s been a member of the prestigious off-Broadway company: TACT (The Actor’s Company Theatre). www.tactnyc.org …and any bio would be remiss to not include her alma mater, the more than terrific: University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. In this episode, Margaret shares: 1. Navigating big life transitions 2. Acting out as an adult 3. Spiritual kryptonite and the areas of yoga that most people miss out on
