STEPHEN CARVER B.Sc M.Sc C.Eng EurIng FIRM FAPM - is rated as one of the top 3 lecturers at one of Europe's top MBA Business Schools. He has a reputation of taking complex management concepts such as Project, Programme and Crisis Management and being able to distil them down, into highly informative and fun lectures - often using “storytelling” techniques. His attitude is “if you haven't done it – you shouldn't be teaching it!”He has lectured to the British armed forces pro bono for the last 20 years – and is rated as top lecturer on ACSC and ICSC. He has lectured at almost every UK military base including Shrivenham, Hereford, Conningsby, Devonport, Cosford, Uxbridge, Faslane, Falklands, Germany, Erbil and Valley. He recently shared a lively stage debate with Charles Haddon Cave at Shrivenham discussing ethical leadership.Unusually, for an academic, he has actually spent most of his working life in real business. He started as an engineer in the offshore oil business and then worked his way up the corporate ladder at Virgin and then Halliburton reporting directly into the CEO. He still runs his own, highly successful, Project Management company working with organisations from Banks and Law firms to manufacturing and pharma.Stephen is an unusual blend of Academic, Businessman and Teller of Tales. John Watts never knew his father. He was conceived days before his father, Wing Commander Joseph Watts, was killed on a bombing mission over occupied Europe. He left behind a daughter, and also an unborn son. But, recently John discovered that at the RAF Museum at Cosford, they have one of the very few surviving Hampdens which is being restored. On March 30, and 31, 1993, reports of a UFO over Southern England came in to the Ministry of Defense. Nick Pope was manning the “UFO desk” at the time, and he described that “the phones were ringing off the hook.” He posted a description of the most dramatic reports on February 20, 2007, on the Physics Forum website. He appeared in a 2009 7 News Spotlight (an Australian program) segment presented by Russ Coulthart and described himself as “broadly skeptical” and his investigation of this series of reports as “the turning point.” Pope described the case in his 1996 book, “Open Skies, Closed Minds,” which helped to make it a classic, but Jenny Randles of the British UFO Research Association suspected that some of the sightings were of a satellite rocket booster from Cosmos 2235 (sent up by the Commonwealth of Independent States) re-entering the atmosphere. One report from RAF Shawbury that was described by Pope was later reconsidered by the witness as also having a prosaic explanation. Because the file (Part 1, Part 2) on the case was released to the public by the MoD, the details of the case can be examined by anyone with an interest.Read more →This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5922140/advertisement

The Falkland Islands lie 8000 miles from Britain making the Falklands War a particularly tricky one to fight; it required some seriously innovative thinking. No story from the Falklands better tells the story of that innovation than Operation Blackbuck which ran from the 30th of April 1982 to the end of the war. British bombers flew 4000 miles from the Southern Atlantic base at Ascension Island to the Falklands to destroy the Argentine runaway at Port Stanley. But there was a huge hurdle; Vulcan bombers couldn't manage that distance on one tank of fuel. Thousands of feet above the Atlantic in complete radio silence, the RAF crews had to engage in mid-flight refuelling, a particularly delicate dangerous process in which one aircraft feeds fuel to another while maintaining the exact same high speed, altitude and bearings without crashing into one another.Join Dan on a trip to the Midlands Royal Airforce Museum at Cosford where he meets Dr Peter Johnston to tell the story of the Black Buck Raids- the longest bombing mission in history as well as stories of the RAF in the Falklands War from inside the famous Bravo November Chinook helicopter. You can visit RAF Cosford. Episode 6 took us all the way across the pond for a fabulous conversation with illustrator, sketchbook enthusiast and traveling artist, Nina Cosford. From pandemic hairstyles to tights that never seem to fit properly, Nina shared with us her approach to illustration and the importance of discussing our shared experiences. Often it's those small moments or the most mundane of actions in our everyday routines that make us feel more connected and a society, and most importantly, humans. Throughout her career as an illustrator, Nina has had the opportunity to travel the world and capture and document those small moments. She enjoys documenting the special and sometimes hilarious people that make any town or city feel like the most fabulous spot in the world. Nina is also a hardcore sketchbooker (is that a word, maybe we just made it up) and has recently launched her own line of sketchbooks, designed for anyone and everyone – artists, notetakers, or those that just love a good list. During the First World War about 2 billion letters were delivered by the British army postal service and in 1917 alone 19,000 mailbags crossed the Channel every day. This correspondence was a vital means of reassuring sweethearts, wives and mothers of continuing love and care. Historian, Hayley Louise, of the University of Worcester, has studied archives of letters and cards between men at the Front to women from Worcestershire and the surrounding counties. In the first of a series of three audio podcasts she explores how mothers, wives and soldiers at the Front sought and gained reassurance from this intimate exchange of news and feelings.
