The astonishing story that has been featured in Sci Fi and History Channel documentaries! In December 1980, Larry Warren was a member of the Air Force security police stationed at RAF Bentwaters, a NATO base in Great Britain. On the night of the 28th he was on guard duty when he was taken by truck to join other Air Force personnel to investigate a disturbance in a Rendlesham Forest about five miles away, which turned out to be a landed UFO. This was the third night of UFO activity in the area and by far the most profound. When the men were debriefed the next day, they were warned to tell no one about what they had seen-as "bullets are cheap." And so began what would turn out to be the best documented and most significant military-UFO incident in history. This remarkable story, told with the help of investigative writer Peter Robbins, was the basis of the Sci Fi Channel's documentary UFO Invasion at Rendlesham and the History Channel's [title to be inserted later]. "Warren's firsthand account explodes with authentic detail. A riveting, fascinating, and important book." -Whitley Strieber, author of Communion "[H]as the force of a well-told mystery novel, yet it is all disturbingly true. A major contribution to the literature." -Budd Hopkins, author of Missing Time "[O]ne gripping version of the story of this classic UFO case and its aftermath." -Publisher's Weekly "This book is dynamite. Meticulously researched, gripping, provocative..." -Nick Pope, author of Open Skies, Closed Minds "[Q]uestions on these UFO sightings are still being asked in Parliament. If you read this gripping book you will see why." -Focus, journal of the British Ministry of Defense

On March 30, and 31, 1993, reports of a UFO over Southern England came in to the Ministry of Defense. Nick Pope was manning the “UFO desk” at the time, and he described that “the phones were ringing off the hook.” He posted a description of the most dramatic reports on February 20, 2007, on the Physics Forum website. He appeared in a 2009 7 News Spotlight (an Australian program) segment presented by Russ Coulthart and described himself as “broadly skeptical” and his investigation of this series of reports as “the turning point.” Pope described the case in his 1996 book, “Open Skies, Closed Minds,” which helped to make it a classic, but Jenny Randles of the British UFO Research Association suspected that some of the sightings were of a satellite rocket booster from Cosmos 2235 (sent up by the Commonwealth of Independent States) re-entering the atmosphere. One report from RAF Shawbury that was described by Pope was later reconsidered by the witness as also having a prosaic explanation. Because the file (Part 1, Part 2) on the case was released to the public by the MoD, the details of the case can be examined by anyone with an interest.Read more →This show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/5922140/advertisement

In the early 2000s, African Union members adopted what is known as the Yamoussoukro Decision. The treaty was designed to open up air transport between African countries by promoting fair competition among airlines. However, World Bank says this hasn't really taken off, as African countries are still restricting their markets to prefer state owned carriers. But now, South Africa seems to be taking a different approach. Not only is it opening up its skies to fellow African airlines, it's even striking deals with foreign carriers like Air Belgium. Is this the start of a fresh approach to air travel? And could open skies help body African economies? #AfricaDaily

Kyiv took a long time to sign the Treaty on Open Skies. 14 years. And on October 12, during the 23rd Ukraine-EU summit, it was signed. The agreement will further open Ukraine to low-cost airlines, which will increase passenger traffic and significantly contribute to the growth of Ukraine's economy in the field of tourism. For example, Ryanair has already announced plans for aggressive expansion in Ukraine. So the agreement will remove market restrictions for Ukraine and link it to the EU's domestic aviation market. But what exactly will Ukrainians get?

Open Skies: My Life as Afghanistan's First Female Pilot Show Guest: Niloofar Rahmani The true story of Niloofar Rahmani and her determination to become Afghanistan's first female air force pilot In 2010, for the first time since the Soviets, Afghanistan allowed women to join the armed forces, and Niloofar entered Afghanistan's military academy. Niloofar had to break through social barriers to demonstrate confidence, leadership, and decisiveness—essential qualities for a combat pilot. Niloofar performed the first solo flight of her class—ahead of all her male classmates—and in 2013 became Afghanistan's first female fixed-wing air force pilot. The US State Department honored Niloofar with the International Women of Courage Award and brought her to the United States to meet Michelle Obama and fly with the US Navy's Blue Angels. But when she returned to Kabul, the danger to her and her family had increased significantly. Rahmani and her family are portraits of the resiliency of refugees and the accomplishments they can reach when afforded opportunities.

In the final episode of the series, Usha takes a closer look at the people behind the nuclear arms race. At the 1955 Geneva Summit, the superpowers tried to manage the dangers of the Cold War through face-to-face diplomacy, dealing with each other as people rather than as faceless nuclear arsenals. Yet Khrushchev's frosty reception of Eisenhower's Open Skies proposal showed just how far the two sides still had to go. Usha interviews several experts who stress that, decades later, empathy and respect are still critical -- and, right now, conspicuously absent -- elements of U.S.-Russia nuclear diplomacy. Meanwhile, in the secretive atomic communities built for plutonium production, the human toll of nuclear competition was becoming painfully clear. From Eisenhower and Khrushchev to factory workers in the atomic cities to morally conflicted scientists like Andrei Sakharov, every human being with a role in the nuclear Cold War had to wrestle with the physical and emotional costs, the moral dilemmas, and the irresolvable contradictions of this most terrible weapon.   Guests: Alexandra Bell, Dr. Anya Fink, Dr. Kate Brown, Dr. Olga Oliker
