Since its launch on Christmas Day 2021, the James Webb Space Telescope has delivered some of the most stunning images of space we've ever seen, peering deeper into the cosmos than ever before. But as awe-inspiring as these images are, data about the history of the Universe being collected by the telescope are perhaps even more mind-blowing. In this episode, we catch up with Sky at Night Presenter Dr Maggie Aderin-Pocock to talk about her new book Webb's Universe: The Space Telescope Images that Reveal our Cosmic History. She tells us how the telescope is shedding new light on what we know about the birth of stars and galaxies, how it's teaching us more about the structure and atmospheres of distant exoplanets and what she's most excited about it discovering in the future. Embark on a celestial odyssey with SpaceTime Series 27 Episode 57, where we unravel the rapid evolution of spiral galaxies. Our cosmic journey begins over 10 billion years ago, as new observations from the Webb Space Telescope reveal the early formation of star bars. These stellar structures, pivotal in the maturation of galaxies, were once thought to emerge in a chaotic young universe. Yet, they now appear to have developed far sooner, indicating a surprisingly orderly galactic evolution. The episode takes an unexpected turn as we delve into the moon's dramatic geological past. Discover how our lunar companion turned itself inside out, reshaping its surface with titanium-rich lava flows. The tale unfolds through a blend of computer simulations and spacecraft observations, shedding light on the moon's enigmatic lopsided geology. As we return to Earth, we witness the changing of the guard aboard China's Tiangong space station. The Shenzhou 17 crew's safe return after six months in orbit paves the way for the Shenzhou 18 team to continue exploring the frontiers of science in microgravity, including the intriguing endeavor of raising fish in the void.Concluding our cosmic survey, we gaze upon the night sky's wonders in the May edition of Skywatch. In this talk, astrobiologist Charles Lineweaver discusses the history of life on Earth and what we can deduce from our understanding of the universe about the existence and history of life elsewhere. He recounts the ongoing discovery of large numbers of exoplanets -- planets orbiting other stars -- and what we can learn from the varieties of planets that are being found. He challenges us to think about what parts in the development of intelligent life on Earth would necessarily happen elsewhere and what parts might be unique to our planet. Charles Lineweaver is an honorary associate professor at the Australian National University's Research School of Astronomy and Astrophysics and Research School of Earth Science. His research areas include exoplanetology (the statistical analysis of exoplanets and their habitability), cosmobiology (using our new knowledge of cosmology to constrain life in the Universe) and the study of cancer. He recently completed an online video course at: arewealone.us. Dr. Lineweaver earned a BA in history from the State University of New York at Binghamton, an MA in English from Brown University, a BS is physics from Ludwig Maximillian's University in Munich, and a PhD in physics at the University of California, Berkeley in 1994.
Good day to you listeners! It's the super-sized Eternals movie review podcast! But first, we have to go over the weekly comic book pull list real quick (at 0:08:44), then onto the good stuff! The Eternals discussion begins at 0:27:22 with that opening titles crawl, explaining the six singularities, the dawn of creation, and then Arishem and the Celestials both in the comics and as they are set up in the movie. Ego, the Living Planet, and his connections to the Celestials are brought into the discussion at 0:35:00, before starting the basic plot overview at 0:38:01. This section includes the most basic of plot explanations, tied up with all kinds of comics history, Easter eggs, MCU translations, some theories, and more, all the way to the ending. With the plot covered, it's on to the major and minor changes made from the comics to the MCU at 0:52:03, including retro and modern Eternals history. Then I have an in-depth look at each of the MCU versions of these Characters at 0:55:43, covering all ten Eternals and Dane Whitman, and comparing them to their comic counterparts. Finally, noteworthy moments in the movie are at 01:07:10, followed by my favorite bits of humor at 1:14:03. After a brief discussion of the movie's sometimes surprising music at 1:18:51, the episode wraps up with what to expect next for the MCU, spinning out of the events of this movie at 01:21:13. Whew, I think that was it! Let me know what you thought of the movie and give me some feedback on what worked or not in my discussion! I'll be back next for episode 41B on Friday (or Saturday) November 12/13, discussing the week's comic book pick list, possibly all that DCTV I'm behind on, more than likely more thoughts on Eternals, and anything relevant that hits the news! One of the first songs The Beatles worked on for their fourth record, Beatles for Sale, ended up being one of the last ones they finished, and along the way, I argue, the create the blueprint for what becomes power-pop. A catchy, repeating guitar riff on a jangly 12-string, a signature drum part, earnest, powerful, heart-on-the-sleeve vocals, and MELODY MELODY MELODY. "What You're Doing" may not be the high-water mark on the album, but it's impact on bands would be felt for generations to come. One of those bands who followed that blueprint, and then fine-tuned it themselves was Memphis's Big Star. We're joined this week by author Rich Tupica, who's book "There Was A Light: The Cosmic History of Chris Bell and the rise of Big Star" is a brilliantly written bio on Big Star founder Chris Bell, who often gets sidelined in the story for the more well known and cult-worshipped Alex Chilton. Together, Chris and Alex wrote all the material for the band's debut, #1 Record, fashioning themselves as a Lennon-McCartney-style writing team with Chris the embracing the melody and production values of McCartney, and Alex the chaos and immediacy of Lennon. The partnership didn't last, as Chris left after the album came out to no fanfare, fruitlessly pursuing a solo career, while the band forged on, putting out an additional 2 records that sank without much of a trace upon release. Over the years, the Big Star/Chris Bell catalog moved underground, a secret between musicians with a shared love of Beatle-esque pop/rock, until a 90s reunion and on-going resurgence brought the band the acclaim and notoriety that eluded them during their initial run. All 3 of their original albums, #1 Record, Radio City, and Third, rank in Rolling Stone's top 500 Albums of All Time list. Rich's book can be purchased online or via your local bookstore. We suggest ordering locally if possible, and we can't recommend the book enough. Also, check out Rich's podcast Hanging on the Telephone (long-form phone conversations with creative people) and Inzane Michigan (a dive in the sights and sounds of Michigan). This episode is a bit longer than usual, but Rich's knowledge of Big Star is impressive, and this music is as important, imho, as Beatles music, and I wanted to give it all the space it deserved. Non-Beatles songs featured in this episode are "In The Street," "Feel," "Septmber Gurls," I'm So Tired," "Thirteen," and "O My Soul" by Big Star, "I Am The Cosmos," and "You And Your Sister" by Chris Bell (the latter featuring Alex Chilton), and "The Letter" by The Boxtops. Host Rich Tupica (who wrote "There Was A Light the Cosmic History of Chris Bell & the Rise of Big Star," a 469-page oral history book) chats with Jody Stephens, Big Star's legendary drummer. Today, Jody holds a longtime management position at Ardent Studios in Memphis, the same studio where Big Star recorded all of their acclaimed albums back in the 1970s. He is also playing in his current band, Those Pretty Wrongs. On this episode, we go beyond Big Star and delve in to Jody's own life story. Though, there are plenty of Alex Chilton, Chris Bell and Andy Hummel stories, as well. We also talk up The Posies. Fans of R.E.M. might want to stick around for his memories of when they arrived at Ardent Studios to record their Green album.

The cosmos had tried in vain to discount or deny the historic resurrection of Jesus. It has attempted to discount the resurrection by mockery. It has attempted to deny the resurrection by false arguments and it has failed. However, those who are willing to carefully investigate the evidence for the resurrection have come away astonished, and many have been saved. God did raise Jesus from the dead and the list of witnesses who saw him is nothing short of amazing.

For 14 years, Fraknoi served as the Executive Director of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, and was editor of its popular level magazine, Mercury, and its newsletter for teachers, The Universe in the Classroom. He has edited two collections of science articles and science fiction stories for Bantam Books, and is the lead author of Voyages through the Universe, one of the leading astronomy textbooks in the world, and also the children's book Disney's Wonderful World of Space. Fraknoi serves on the Board of Trustees of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute, and is also a Fellow of the Committee for the Skeptical Inquiry, specializing in debunking astrology. He has received the Annenberg Foundation Prize of the American Astronomical Society (the highest honor in the field of astronomy education), as well as the Klumpke-Roberts Prize of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific (given for a lifetime of contributions to popularizing astronomy) and the Gemant Prize of the American Institute of Physics. In this discussion with D.J. Grothe, Andrew Fraknoi explains the history of the atoms in our bodies, and how we are literally made of "star stuff." He details how scientists know the history of these atoms, and explores the implications of this "simple but profound fact," and how some people derive mystical meaning from it, while others find it humbling. He talks about the compatibility of religion with astronomy, and the proper role of skepticism in the science classroom. He describes current threats to science education. And he makes a case for popularizing science and astronomy, and how this benefits society.
