CLICK TO SUBSCRIBE ON YOUR FAVORITE PODCATCHER CONTENT WARNING: Discussion of war, racism, grief, trauma, PTSD, explosions, abuse, trauma. We're wrapping up our series with Spike's most recent joint, traveling to Vietnam for a cross between Apocalypse Now and The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. It's another bold swing in the new era of Spike, but yet again, the balance is all off. When this movie is working, it's a masterpiece, but there's so much of it that feels like a slog. And it's not because of anything fundamentally wrong with the story, just that there's far too much of it, and far too much pontificating on the story itself. For the cast alone, though, it's a shame this got buried in the COVID shutdown, because they deserve heaps of recognition. We conclude our director's series with 2020's Da 5 Bloods this week on Macintosh & Maud Haven't Seen What?! What DO violets smell like? Can a movie be “lumpy”? Is Spike Lee's 2020 polemic actually elegant? Could we possibly love Delroy Lindo's performance more? Answers to those questions, plus jokes, plugs, reviews, name calling, and a preview of next week's episode. #teamscottforever DA 5 BLOODS (2020) is directed by Spike Lee and is available on Netflix. Movie of the Year: 2020Da 5 Bloods...Again! The Taste Buds re-release their hit Da 5 Bloods episode from earlier in the year! It's Da 5 Bloods turn on the bracket, so we're re-presenting the January episode that covered that movie! Da Five Bloods is the first movie by Spike Lee--excuse me, PopFilter Hall of Famer Spike Lee, respect--released exclusively on Netflix, but it doesn't feel like a small movie even if it was destined for the small screen. It is an adventure through the heart of Viet Nam, and perhaps dear listener through the heart of man himself? The movie moves quickly between fact and fiction, history and histrionics, and pathos and bathos. Featuring tone shifts that we have come to expect from life, but not from movies, the film pushes boundaries while being charming, funny, and timeless. One part hang-out movie, one part war movie, one part action romp, it asks what do we take away from war, and perhaps more importantly, what do we leave behind? Tough questions Does Lee's desire for an action movie get in the way of the more emotional and historical points he's trying to make or does he walk the balance between poignant and bombastic? Does Delroy Lindo steal the show, or does he distract from the other Bloods? These are just two of the issues we cover in this episode, dang. It's not for me to be impressed, obvi, but I guess I just am. Let me know if I am out of line here. Silly Season At one point, Mike says, "I was blown away by the performances, I mean, Viet Damn!" Which, to me, seems borderline. I like to stay further back from the edge than Mike, though, so I respect him. As sort of a weird joke I am going to indicate here that Ryan wins this one by the score of 42-34, but also I am going to further indicate that I would think it was funny to just make something like that up. We've been busy celebrating Delroy Lindo's work in Da 5 Bloods ever since the film hit Netflix back in June of 2020. Now, with the movie in the middle of its awards season run, it's time to ensure that we keep that party going. With the Da 5 Bloods ensemble nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture at the SAG Awards, Lindo himself nominated for Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards and hopes high for more recognition to come, Lindo took the time to join us for an episode of Collider Connected to revisit his time exploring and honing his craft over the years and to highlight what made Da 5 Bloods a standout experience. Check out this episode of Collider Connected to hear all about Lindo's experience working on Congo and The Devil's Advocate, collaborating with Spike Lee, Jonathan Majors and Chadwick Boseman, and so much more! Spike Lee's "Da 5 Bloods" was released earlier this summer on Netflix to acclaim from critics and then shortly afterward, it only grew in public consciousness due to the lasting power of the film's story, the summer's Black Lives Matter movement and the tragic death of one of the film's stars, Chadwick Boseman. Delroy Lindo, the film's lead, has had a career that has lasted for nearly fifty years and he received the highest reviews of his career for his tormented portrayal of the Donald Trump supporting, PTSD suffering, Vietnam war veteran, Paul. Delroy was kind enough to take a few moments to talk about the recognition he has received so far for the film, his experience reuniting with director Spike Lee, working with Chadwick Boseman in a scene that has taken on new meaning since the actor's untimely death and more! In the first episode of our special series where we pair a presumed & stream-able Oscar nominee with a presumed & stream-able Razzie nominee, we look back at a pair of big budget films with very different tones. We first discuss Spike Lee's Da 5 Bloods, which was a much needed summer release on Netflix with the civil rights protests of 2020 still in full swing. We then discuss Dolittle, the $175 million movie starring Robert Downey Jr., streaming not on HBO Max, that some bettors have sweeping the Razzies this year. Was it really that bad? Spike Lee talks about the protesters, The Knicks and his new movie. Da 5 Bloods is a 2020 American war drama film directed and produced by Spike Lee. Four African American Vietnam veterans return to Vietnam in search of the remains of their fallen squad leader and the promise of buried treasure. These heroes battle forces of humanity and nature while confronted by the lasting ravages of the immorality of the Vietnam War. Spike also talks about his feelings when he see's The American Flag Lee admits that he “see's a broken promise” when looking at The United States Flag. Something he reminds us you will see in the film Da 5 Bloods. The star of the filmmakers latest work is Chadwick Boseman who's character tells his fellow bloods how “black people having been fighting for the United States from the very beginning.” Lee in the interview gives us an example by saying “the first person to die for this country at the Boston Massacre was Crispus Attucks in 1770.” He went on to say “the whole Kaepernick kneeling was all about what we are marching for today, the whole narrative got twisted. Colin wasn't protesting the US Flag or the veterans that fought for this country, he was kneeling for social injustice.” The iconic filmmaker wrote the script for “Do The Right Thing” back in 1988, some 31 years ago. He explains how that award winning film is so relevant today. What's up with The Knicks biggest Fan? Is Spike back on the bandwagon? He updates us on his relationship with the New York Knicks. Lee said “he will not return for any more games for the remainder of the season”. All Spike Lee wanted to do was use the employee entrance at Madison Square Garden. Really, it's all he knows. A long time New York Knicks superfan, has been using it for 28 years.. But suddenly, they wouldn't let him — security told him to use a different entrance.Lee was then in a full-on feud with the Knicks and team owner James Dolan over his treatment.Lee explained, we will wait and see how the new GM Leon Rose does with hiring a new coach and filling out his roster. Fans questioned how the franchise could treat its biggest fan with such disrespect. Which turns out that they have been eliminated from this years playoffs. The NBA Board of Governors met with Adam Silver to vote and approve a plan to return to play on July 31 with 22 teams at Disney World. Now, more than ever, Craig and Ryan think it's time to stop “now more than ever”-ing and get into the shit with Spike Lee's new joint, “Da 5 Bloods,” a film that, crummy CGI aside, is ridiculously powerful and thought-provoking.

We kick off Episode 55 with a conversation on Spike Lee's newest Joint, the Netflix-backed DA 5 BLOODS. The auteur has a lot on his mind - as always - and he employs an ensemble led by the ever-reliable Delroy Lindo to paint the picture. We dig into the mine field and give our thoughts. Our second new flick this week is the Judd Apatow/Pete Davidson collaboration, THE KING OF STATEN ISLAND. The two push each other out of their comfort zones to explore some different terrain, but does it work? We discuss. There seemed to be no better time to unveil our Spike Lee PICK SIX segment. We each rank our SIX FAVORITE SPIKE LEE FILMS OF ALL-TIME. Unsurprisingly, this was not an easy list to trim down and then order. Closing out the show this week for the latest THROWBACK CHALLENGE, is a sit down with Ava Duvernay's 2016 Netflix documentary, 13th. It takes a scalpel to the US prison system and displays some alarming racial injustices that have been deep-seeded for a long time. Much love to you all. Thanks for listening.
