We're back again talking about all things Texas. With spring here, we're discussing bluebonnet history and how it became the state flower of Texas on top of other normal shenanigans.
Imagine being swept off your feet by a compelling job offer in a bustling Western saloon, finding yourself captivated by an enchanting dancer who's not just a pretty face but also a woman of substance. That's precisely the unexpected turn Bat Mastersons life took when I crossed paths with Billy Thompson, his partner Harry Fleming, and the bewitching Libby at the Lady Gay. This episode will transport you back to an era of dancehall girls, cards, and liquor, where Bat Masterson navigates his newfound environment under the intoxicating presence of Molly Brennan while running the Farrow Table. But hold onto your hats, because the ride's just beginning. The dancehall's not just about music and mirth; there's more than meets the eye. Listen as Molly Brennan, a survivor and dancehall girl, unfolds a tale of intrigue and murder that newspaper headlines failed to capture. The assassination of Phil Cole was no ordinary crime, and Molly's whispered confession provides a chilling twist that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about Wild Bill Hickok. As I share my surprising revelation, we'll delve into the truth, unmasking the rugged reality of life in the West. Tune in, and take a walk on the wild side.Support the showCattle Drives WebsiteLegends of Dodge City WebsiteOrder Books

I was blown away, not just by the gift, but also remembering the many kindnesses Bill had done for me through the years. I share about Bill and the modifications that he had done to the guitar since he bought it from Clawson's Music in Corpus Christi, Texas in the mid-1960s. Through the years, it received an electronics upgrade from Bill Lawrence, who did the modifications himself, and a neck change to a mid-70s model.I also show how Bill's Tele has aged differently from my 1967 Telecaster, as his 1967 has much less wear, yet is much darker due to the number of gigs he played in the smoke-filled Honky Tonks and Dance Halls of South Texas.Book Nook Amazon link - Fender The Inside Story by Forrest Whitehttps://amzn.to/3MidRQQGear used:1967 factory Bigsby-equipped Fender Telecaster with Bill Lawrence pickups, and a mid-70s neck.2023 Headstrong Lil' King with 12" Eminence GA-SC64 speakerhttps://headstrongamps.com/lil-king-ampEffects used:Mad Professor Deep Blue Delay #askzac #billlawrence #bigsbytelecasterSupport the show
Armed with curiosity and a deep fascination for the supernatural, the podcast embarks on its inaugural field trip to Lake George, eagerly seeking out the ethereal presence of ghosts that reside in the shadows of this captivating location. In the enchanting lakeside town of Lake George, NY, two gifted psychic mediums embarked on a transformative journey through time and dimensions. The old camp, once a bustling boarding house, held within its weathered walls the echoes of countless souls. As the mediums delved into the ethereal realm, their psychic senses heightened, drawing them closer to the spirits that lingered. Whispers of forgotten laughter and long-lost conversations filled the air as they navigated the camp's corridors and explored its hidden nooks. With each step, the mediums unraveled the poignant stories of the past, revealing the triumphs, heartaches, and unfinished business of the spectral inhabitants. Through their unique abilities, they bridged the gap between the living and the departed, offering solace, closure, and a renewed connection to those who had once called the camp their vacation home. In the tranquil beauty of Lake George, the psychic mediums became conduits of the spiritual realm, unraveling the mysteries of the past and shining a light on the timeless spirits that are forever with the Trojan Cottages of Lake George, NY. North Coast Chronicles Podcast: Tales from the Great Lakes with host Helen Brohl, swings into Spring with "Dance Halls and Full Dress Balls: Great Lakes in the Gilded Age.” The Gilded Age in American history was the short period after the Civil War to just after the turn of the century. Mr. Bob Tagatz, resident historian from the Grand Hotel in Mackinac Island, Michigan and Ms. Leslie Heinrichs, Archivist for Marcus Corporation, the company that owns the Pfister Hotel in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, share the extraordinary history of these two iconic hotels built in the late 1800's and still operating today. More than places of business and respite, the Grand Hotel and the Pfister tell the story of high society, extraordinary opulence, and the sojourn via trains and boats from big cities which, in many ways, built the foundation of our appreciation of the Great Lakes today.

Carmen Pollard is a documentary filmmaker, editor, producer, and story consultant whose filmography includes For Dear Life, a feature-length documentary in which she sensitively followed her cousin, Vancouver theatre producer James Pollard, in the three and a half years after his terminal cancer diagnosis, and Dancehalls, Deejays & Distortion, an upbeat 10-part series that amplifies little-known stories from B.C.'s eclectic music scene. Carmen's latest is Militant Mother, a short film about a group of mothers from the Raymur social housing project in Vancouver whose children were forced to cross perilous train tracks in order to get to school. After months of advocating for a safe crossing to no avail, these 25 mothers decided to make their voices heard by blockading CN Rail. Militant Mother screens online and in-cinema at the 2021 Vancouver International Film Festival. Carmen joins Sabrina for a thoughtful and fascinating conversation about Militant Mother, representation in the documentary sphere, and the toll that telling stories about traumatized people can have on documentary filmmakers. Imagine, walking down the street one night in Opelousas and hearing in the distance music from Ray Charles or maybe James Brown. Only that was no jukebox that you were hearing but Charles and Brown themselves performing live in St. Landry Parish. There was a day when the state was dotted with dancehalls and big name entertainers travelled the circuit. Within those walls the sounds of Zydeco also began to flourish including Rockin' Sidney commanding “Don't Mess with My Toot-Toot.” And, swamp popper Rod Bernard swooned that “This Should go on Forever.” Author Herman Fuselier joins Errol Laborde, executive editor of Louisiana Life, along with podcast producer Kelly Massicot to talk about his book, “Ghosts of Good Times: Louisiana Dance Halls, Past and Present,” as well as the emergence of Zydeco and its biggest stars. Oh yes, we'll also hear theories on what “Toot-Toot” means, but, warning, whatever the answer, don't mess with it.

This hour, we talk about two Connecticut dance halls, each springing from the vision of two very different men who took their respective dance halls down very different paths. One's dream soared, bringing thousands of concert-goers to over 3,000 acts over an 11-year history. The other's dream stalled, his elaborate dance hall sitting idle for decades. Thrall Hall in East Windsor is a lot of things. By most accounts, it's a fascinating example of vernacular or folk architecture. Ed Thrall built the dance hall from materials he recovered from demolition projects, sometimes salvaging pieces of historical interest. He built it his own way following his own idiosyncratic ideas about architecture. Thrall Hall contains some engineering marvels including the use of recycled tractor trailer tires under the dance floor to give it adjustable bounce. What Thrall Hall is not is usable. Ed is a peculiar and troubled man. He didn't work and play well with others, and you'll hear today an occasionally hair-raising account of his battles with the town. Catie Talarski shares this heartbreaking story of lost dreams, betrayal, and redemption. Thrall Hall was just about the only thing that could make the wild 11-year run of the Shaboo Inn in Mansfield seem pale by comparison. That's the second story we tell today. Connecticut’s Shaboo Inn, a legendary 1970s and 1980s blues and rock concert dance hall, attracted over 100 top artists, including Bonnie Raitt, Miles Davis, The Police, Aerosmith, and Tom Waits, to the former silk mill in Mansfield. David "Lefty" Foster started Shaboo at the age of 19 when he wasn't yet old enough to be inside the building. He joins us to share stories from this long and storied Connecticut icon. Read and listen to Catie Talarski's feature here. GUEST: David Foster - Co-founder of Shaboo Productions and the leader of the Mohegan Sun Shaboo All-Stars; he was inducted into the New England Music Hall of Fame in October, 2020 Join the conversation on Facebook and Twitter. This week I'm joined by Ernesto Cragnolino, a partner of at local firm, Alterstudio and his wife, Krista Whitson an architect at Mell Lawrence Architects. In 2004 the couple saved what's known to be the best work of architect Harwell Hamilton Harris, who built the apartments in the 1950s, from unsympathetic developers. Krista and Ernesto restored the building and in 2013 they strived for it to be a national landmark. This however is not their AIA Austin Homes tour house, they have generously opened their own home which they designed together in the West Campus neighbourhood of Austin. Their home was recently featured in Dwell magazine .Krista Whitson, AIA, holds a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Texas at Austin and a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Chicago. Krista has worked at Mell Lawrence Architects for the past two decades. She is interested in all things designed related. Her photography exhibit "Dance Halls of Central Texas" and catalog was supported by a grant from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts. She hails from Indiana. With over 20 years of professional practice, Ernesto Cragnolino has focused on the design of institutional, commercial and residential projects for a variety of clients and at a variety of budgets. Ernesto has taught design and construction at The University of Texas School of Architecture, with an emphasis towards building envelope design and detailing. Ernesto was elevated to the prestigious AIA College of Fellows in 2016. He is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina, but grew up in Columbus, Ohio and Long Island, New York. (Kate is apppealing for anyone with pictures/stories/anecdotes about the Golden Slipper to contact her). Plus, Paul talks about the fascinating story of Catharine Parr Traill throughout the 1800's. Catharine was a successful writer of children's books and was an amateur naturalist/botanist - her books are still used as sources of information today by researchers studying life in Ontario 150 years ago. Dancehalls were a highly visible aspect of life in post-War Glasgow. They were beacons of fun, and often the scene of infidelity.

This hour, we talk about two Connecticut dance halls, each springing from the vision of two very different men who took their respective dance halls down very different paths. One's dream soared, bringing thousands of concert-goers to over 3,000 acts over an eleven-year history. The other's dream stalled, his elaborate dance hall sitting idle for decades.Support the show: http://www.wnpr.org/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
