Miracles and Machines: A Sixteenth-Century Automaton and Its Legend (Getty Publications, 2023) tells the singular story of an uncanny, rare object at the cusp of art and science: a 450-year-old automaton known as “the monk.” The walking, gesticulating figure of a friar, in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of American History, is among the earliest extant ancestors of the self-propelled robot. According to legend connected to the court of Philip II of Spain, the monk represents a portrait of Diego de Alcalá, a humble Franciscan lay brother whose holy corpse was said to be agent to the miraculous cure of Spain's crown prince as he lay dying in 1562. In tracking the origins of the monk and its legend, the authors visited archives, libraries, and museums across the United States and Europe, probing the paradox of a mechanical object performing an apparently spiritual act. They identified seven kindred automata from the same period, which, they argue, form a paradigmatic class of walking “prime movers,” unprecedented in their combination of visual and functional realism. While most of the literature on automata focuses on the Enlightenment, this enthralling narrative journeys back to the late Renaissance, when clockwork machinery was entirely new, foretelling the evolution of artificial life to come. Elizabeth King, a sculptor and writer, is professor emerita of sculpture and extended media at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Richmond. W. David Todd is associate curator emeritus and former conservator of timekeeping at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, DC. Army and Navy radio stations around the world had something extra to listen for 100 years ago this week: Mars. The Red Planet was passing closer to Earth than it had in centuries. A retired astronomer thought that Martians might take advantage of the encounter to beam greetings to the neighbors. So he organized an effort to hear the transmissions. David Todd had led the astronomy program at Amherst College in Massachusetts. Most scientists of the day said there was no chance of a Martian civilization, but Todd disagreed. Radio pioneers Nicola Tesla and Guglielmo Marconi had reported hearing odd signals from space several years earlier. Some interpreted the signals as broadcasts from Mars. And Percival Lowell had created maps of Martian “canals” – built to bring water from the polar ice caps to a dying civilization. All of that convinced Todd that it was worth listening for Martian broadcasts. Todd asked radio stations to go silent for five minutes of every hour for several nights. Only one complied – station WRC, in Washington, D.C. But technicians at other stations listened for odd signals. The military instructed its radio operators to listen as well, but only if it didn’t interfere with normal operations. And it made its leading cryptographer available to decode any Martian messages. Todd also enlisted the help of a television pioneer, and we’ll have more about that tomorrow. Script by Damond Benningfield

So many of us get so caught trying to be “somebody” that we forget to what it means to be the man/woman called has called us to be. When we neglect or misprioritize our true role in this life, it's easy to get overwhelmed by the pressure, comparison, and stress which can quickly take the root of intense worry and anxiety. However, there are some solutions to help us reprioritize our lives and to remind us that we should not seek for our name to be known, but instead to promote the Name of the Lord who is the Only One worthy of all praise, honor, and glory. Joining us today for a very impactful discussion is a dear friend who also happens to be the Founder of a video series for young adults that is both entertaining and enlightening titled, PassagesTV, as well as the Young Adult Life Group Leader at Thomas Road Baptist Church, David Todd Jeremiah. In today's episode David Todd wants to simply encourage your worried or anxious heart and remind you of the power of prayer and humility. John 3:30 says, “He must increase, but I must decrease.” My friend, when we cast all of our worries, cares, and anxieties onto the Lord and trust the character of His heart, it might just make all the difference. Astronomy - The Science of the Heavenly Bodies by David Todd audiobook. The progress of astronomy from age to age has been far from uniform—rather by leaps and bounds: from the earliest epoch when man's planet earth was the center about which the stupendous cosmos wheeled, for whom it was created, and for whose edification it was maintained—down to the modern age whose discoveries have ascertained that even our stellar universe, the vast region of the solar domain, is but one of the thousands of island universes that tenant the inconceivable immensities of space. So rapid, indeed, has been the progress of astronomy in very recent years that the present is especially favorable for setting forth its salient features; and this book is an attempt to present the wide range of astronomy in readable fashion, as if a story with a definite plot, from its origin with the shepherds of ancient Chaldea down to present-day ascertainment of the actual scale of the universe, and definite measures of the huge volume of supersolar giants among the stars. "Building on a discussion of work with research collaborators from Pinhook, Missouri, this presentation will engage the significant challenges of collaborative fieldwork and make the argument that approaches such as Hoodoo Ethnography can direct us in the impossible yet necessary project of advocacy even as we learn to accept the inevitable failures that accompany it. Ultimately, it will make a case that human relationships within and across cultural boundaries, byproducts of deep listening and collaboration, are the foundation of social change even as they almost always are fraught with difficulty and failure."

In this episode Craig and Kevin interview David Todd and Loren Lyon with Garage Kings. Garage floor coatings are a new trend among homeowners because of the amazing durability, ease of cleaning, and overall appearance and functionality they provide.  There are many products on the market including DIY kits from big box stores, epoxy, and others.  David and Loren specifically believe that the best product on the market is a polyasporatic coating that is extremely durable and creates a stronger bond with concrete than the concrete does with itself.  They walk us through the steps that are needed in order to apply the garage floor coating, how long it takes, the warranty, upkeep, and much more. We think this episode is a great introduction into what a garage floor coating will do for your home.   Garage Kings North Houston Website Loren Lyon Email   Buy a Homeowners Show T-Shirt!   Subscribe to our YouTube Channel   The Homeowners Show Website The Homeowners Show Facebook Page Instagram @homeownersshow Twitter @HomeownersThe   Info@homeownersshow.com

In our final episode of Season 1, we’re talking about something near and dear to everyone at Austin Parks Foundation: volunteerism. Volunteer projects are critical to the health of our city’s park system. Coordinated efforts between park stewards and city staff can lead to incredible, positive outcomes in our city’s outdoor spaces. We’re thrilled to have Barry Rivera, our Volunteer Manager at APF, facilitate this discussion. We’d like to thank our guests for joining us today including: Jerry Levenson and David Todd - veteran park stewards, Patrick Chaiken from the City of Austin Park Ranger Program as well as James Duff from the City of Austin Wildlife Division. Volunteer events are a core part of what we do at Austin Parks Foundation. In the midst of COVID-19, in-person volunteer events have been on pause as parks, trails and green spaces were seeing unprecedented use. A phrase we like to use is “over-loved.” As restrictions ease we hope to get you back out into the parks soon, so stay tuned on our website at austinparks.org/volunteer. We’re excited for you to hear from our guests on the importance of volunteering. Check out the video version of this Park Summit Session at austinparks.org/summit! Music & transitions provided by Honey Son. Check out his music on Spotify and YouTube! The Austin ParksCast is a production of Austin Parks Foundation. “Unless you’ve been through some losses, I don’t really think that you understand how to credit those around you when you win.” On this episode, my guest is David Todd, aka, DT, who is currently the executive chef at Memphis’ historic restaurant and bar, The Green Beetle. Having worked with DT in the past, I knew he was someone I wanted on my podcast. David Todd’s road to success has been unconventional… to say the least. DT struggled with addiction for many years before making a big change at the age of 29. And now, 10 years later, he's got plenty of lessons and stories that I know will inspire and motivate you, no matter what field you’re in. But if you DO happen to be in the food industry or have an interest in working in the food industry, you are going to hear some advice from DT that may save you a lot of time and money in the future. We also go into what we can learn from even our lowest moments. We discuss all of this and much more, so go ahead and hit that play button!

Episode 7 is a special BONUS MINI EPISODE from my interview with David Todd, the executive chef at the Green Beetle. If you didn’t hear the original interview yet, I want to encourage you to go back and listen to episode 6 first. The idea behind doing bonus mini episodes is so I can include some of the conversations with my guests that didn’t make the original interview for whatever reason. So whenever you see one of those bonus mini episodes, expect to hear some fun conversations that may or may not be motivating, but that I still find interesting, funny or weird. In this bonus mini episode, DT and I discuss his lifelong love of the Memphis Tigers, how he feels about the hiring of our new men’s basketball coach, Penny Hardaway, how he feels about college basketball versus the NBA, the NCAA program, and we even have a little fun talking about DT’s dog, the star of his social media, Penny. Yeah, his dog’s name is Penny too. So I hope you enjoy this bonus mini episode!

The topic of today's show is parks and the City of Austin, Texas. The upcoming budget process and how it may affect our public parks. Our guests were: Ladye Anne Wofford - Chief Mission Officer with the Austin Parks Foundation. David Todd - long-time parks steward and representative of the Friends of Blunn Creek Partnership. He is also the author of The Texas Landscape Project: Nature and People, and The Texas Landscape Project: Studies of Courage and Conservation. He is the executive director of the Conservation History Association of Texas. Carmen Llanes Pulido - Executive Director of Go Austin Vamos Austin. The Trust for Public Land recently ranked Austin’s park system 46th amongst the 100 largest US cities. It wasn’t exactly the kind of stellar review or ranking that Austin is used to receiving. Now, a group of environmental organizations are calling on our local elected officials to do something about it. Austin City Council is currently on summer recess for the month of July, but when they return, most of their energy will be spent on one thing – the city’s budget. Throughout the months of August and September, they’ll be hosting public meetings and hearings on exactly where the city should be spending its money next year. The new budget will go into effect on October 1st. In response, the Austin Parks Foundation is leading an effort to convince City Council to support a $5 million budget increase for the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. On its website, the Austin Parks Foundation explains that these increases are necessary because the department is dealing with a $700 million backlog in repairs and renovations. They also point to the Trust for Public Land ranking, which found that Austin spends $103 per resident each year toward maintaining and enhancing our parks. The top cities spend an average of $208.
