It's all about candour and calling out systemic inequity on this episode of Centsability with Amie Baker. And how we can get brave, speak up and take steps to build on positive change of the kind represented by Australia's newly adopted Workplace Gender Equality Amendment (https://www.legislation.gov.au/Details/C2023A00018/Html/). The conversation touches on everything from important liabilities women need to keep in mind at every stage of their careers – from salary negotiation to parity in child care burden to asking for that overdue pay raise. You'll also hear a profound call to action related to helping younger women recognize their power (as well as the power of superannuation over time as a tool for building wealth). Get ready to challenge social conditioning and break traditional gender roles. The time has come and these two financial planning experts are empowering us with case studies, stats and strategies for having those difficult – but necessary – conversations! Many of us think immediately of the economic nuts and bolts when it comes to financial planning, but this episode of Centsability is focused on the big picture, including the emotional baggage many of us carry when it comes to money. Host Amie Baker invites her good friend, Dawn Thomas, to share thoughts about her journey as a Senior Financial Adviser at The Wealth Designers. Their conversation takes on thorny issues such as shame, fear and scarcity thinking – negative mindsets that can keep us stuck in an unhealthy (often counterproductive) relationship with money. “I'm not here just to put a spreadsheet in your face,” says Dawn, who is also the host of Your Money Story(https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/your-money-story/id1555980141). “If you want to work with me as an adviser, it's really got to be a pretty open, brutal, honest relationship.” It's all about getting real! You'll come away from this discussion with a clearer understanding of the holistic role financial advisers play – not just when we've amassed wealth but in the early stages of planning that set the stage for long-term freedom. Herself a graduate of Amie's Money Mindset course, Dawn explains her deepened understanding around how the stories we tell ourselves can block us from visioning the lives we want and deserve. Enjoy Part I of what will be a multi-part exploration of women, financial literacy and how to embrace mindsets that foster abundance and banish fear! Episode 501: Elevating the Campus Card Office with NACCU

FOCUS

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 4, 2022 27:32

Like most facets of higher education, campus IDs and card offices are evolving. With the need for more contactless solutions and increased security, the introduction of mobile IDs poses many questions for card offices and data management. On the latest episode of FOCUS, Dawn Thomas, CEO of the National Association of Campus Card Users (NACCU), sheds light on the innovations coming to campus ID management, the importance of good data, and how institutions can prepare themselves to better use insights from the data they collect. What is NACCU? In the realm of credit card payments and data management, NACCU offers membership to any institution that deals with campus credentials. They work with members to build knowledge, grow connections, promote innovation, and aid in technology and data navigation. “We want our folks to use [NACCU] to create community and dive into credential data in a way that guides them to providing a better service to their students and their campuses. We know the campus credential is a gateway to partnerships, we want folks to know the value of the Campus Card Office,” said Thomas. Adoption of Mobile Campus IDs While some NACCU members look towards the future of mobile IDs, many institutions still rely on magnetic strips for ID management. This dichotomy of technology has caused NACCU to adjust how it supports its members. For institutions that are moving towards mobile campus cards, there are two main areas to address. The first is how to gain support and validation from campus leaders. Some successful NACCU schools have done so by involving student government associations to set goals. The second is how to manage infrastructure for contactless credentials. Integrating mobile IDs doesn't mean that institutions need to completely overhaul their equipment, but they do need to identify the best way to move forward. Without proper support and infrastructure, campuses will not reap the full benefits of mobile IDs. Better Data Management While the transition into mobile IDs has piqued the interest of many institutions, NACCU members employ a diverse range of ID management technologies. Thomas believes that the best way for NACCU to maintain balanced support across members is to improve data management. Many campuses are not using their data as effectively as they could, largely in part because they don't always know where to start. Card offices should review data from basic card swipes, access control, dining facilities, security and campus recreation. Once they identify a consistent way to collect that data, the information can be analyzed and shared to build business cases for campus improvements. For privacy when pulling data on an aggregate level, the goal is to answer the business questions without needing to dive into individual transactions and personal student information. Thomas advises institutions that data is not power, but that the decisions it helps make can be powerful. Creating Data Heroes on Campus Recognizing the opportunity for campus card offices to become leaders in this space, NACCU founded a new workshop to educate campus officials on how to manage and use their existing data. Their inaugural Data Summit, held in June 2022, created a great foundation for attendees to unify cross-departmental data needs and advocate for data-informed decisions. Attendees learned to map out dashboards to run simple data queries in the card office. Thomas encourages card offices to continue to use their data effectively because they're more than an ID office, they hold the information campuses need to create change. NACCU is hosting their next Data Summit on November 3-4, 2022, at The Ohio State University. Registration is still open at https://www.naccu.org/events/naccu-data-summit-nov-2022 Additional Data Summits in 2023 will be announced soon. Special Guest: Dawn Thomas.

Cybersecurity Futures 2025. This panel was recorded on the Moscone Center floor during RSA Conference 2025. It follows a Pre-Conference podcast with panelist Dawn Thomas and Alan Cohn and the actual presentation that took place the day before this recording. The project “Cybersecurity Futures 2025” is a collaboration between the University of California, Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity (CLTC) and CNA’s Institute for Public Research, conducted in partnership with the World Economic Forum’s Global Future Council on Cybersecurity (2016-2018) and the Forum’s Centre for Cybersecurity. If this topic doesn’t fit right At The Intersection Of IT Security And Society I am not sure what else could. It is an exciting time to be alive with so many incredible scientific and technological advancements in every area of our lives, with states interacting together and cultures mixing in a global boundary-less cyberspace. It is also a dangerous time to be alive in this new technological era where cybersecurity issues encompass every area of our lives and affect geopolitical dynamics, and the way societies evolve. The decisions we are making today about technology interacting with humans are going to affect our society in 2025 and way beyond that time.  It is now that we must force ourselves to think about fundamental philosophical questions and come up with good answers and courses of action, because those, or the lack of those, are already affecting us now and will affect us even more in our future. For this panel, I invited Ann Cleaveland, (CLTC Executive Director), Diana Kelly (Microsoft), and Priscilla Koepke (Massachusetts Institute of Technology) to recap the research and discuss what the biggest challenges, fears, and possible solutions to the four presented scenarios are. Scenario 1 — Quantum Leap Scenario 2 — The New Wiggle Room Scenario 3 — Barlow’s Revenge Scenario 4 — Trust Us Are we looking at a dystopian, a utopian or a realistic future that we can shape making the right choices today? You decide. Literally, you, they, and we. We can decide, all together if we act now. Dawn Thomas and Alan Cohn Your hosts are:
Sean Martin and Marco Ciappelli What is this presentation about? Well let’s start with something we should all know by now: Cybersecurity is a global issue. How could it be otherwise considering that technology has connected all of us? Literally connected. It is not just a matter of communication between people far away or making distances much shorter; we are talking about connecting all of us in a way that we would not have thought possible a few decades ago. Technology is somehow part of almost everything we do nowadays, and there is no going back. Sure it is nice to be able to unplug some of our devices here and there, but that is not stopping the future from happening. Despite what some people like to think, for the most part, we do not live in little, or big, bubbles anymore, and even when we consider our homes, towns or countries to be unique, independent or even isolated from the rest of the world, we are still very much connected with each other. The future is a globalized world of technology all connected together, and denying it or ignoring it is quite dangerous. To predict how this future may look, in 2016 The World Economic Forum Global Future Council on Cybersecurity and the UC Berkeley Center for Long-Term Cybersecurity began a collaboration to develop a set of future-looking cybersecurity scenarios. These scenarios are very diverse and, as they may appear like a Sci-Fi movie script, contain elements that exist, or are developing, in our present society. By opening the conversations about technology outside of the technology field, using a multidisciplinary approach, and making the stage the place where these conversations happen, the whole world — instead of just individual nations — might actually succeed in addressing this issue before it is too late. 2025 is not that far away. As far as I am concerned, the future is today because it is today where we shape it. So listen up and if you are at RSA Conference in San Francisco join this engaging and interactive presentation that will take place on March 6, 2019, | 1:30 PM – 2:20 PM | Moscone South #301 But now it is time to listen up. In the wake of the recent mailed pipe bombs and Pittsburgh synagogue mass shooting, CNA experts Bill Rosenau and Dawn Thomas discuss the historical context of domestic terrorism in America, and the rise of the “lone wolf” and violent right-wing extremism over recent decades. They define and distinguish domestic terrorism versus hate crimes and examine societal perception of the severity of each, as well as the prevention efforts and law enforcement response to both. Rosenau notes that while terrorism is perceived as the more critical threat, Americans are more likely to be a victim of a hate crime. They also point out that if current systems have been unable to predict and identify perpetrators in recent years, it suggests the traditional risk factors may be outdated while modern technology and prediction tools are underutilized. Thomas poses the question of why Americans are increasingly susceptible to malign influence, and Rosenau emphasizes the need for more academic study on domestic terrorism as it poses a greater threat to American civilians than foreign terrorism.
