Ready for a serious look at the future of your law firm? In this Lawyerist Podcast episode, Zack Glaser sits down with a panel of law school professors for a wake-up call about something that will fundamentally reshape your practice: the tech-savvy generation of law students entering the field. This isn't a distant trend; it's happening now, and it demands your attention. We explore how these future lawyers are already operating differently. You'll hear firsthand about their strong preference for the Google ecosystem – and why that directly impacts your firm's current reliance on tools like Microsoft Word. This isn't just about software; it's about the shifting expectations and workflows these digital natives are bringing with them as they become your colleagues. Here's where it gets interesting for you: we explore how you can leverage this change to your firm's advantage. The professors share insights on how these students are uniquely positioned to drive AI adoption within your practice. And let's be clear, you can't afford to ignore the rising importance of tech fluency, especially in AI. In a world swimming in digital data, from car sensors to smart devices, your firm's relevance depends on it. Creating Jesus is a book for general readers on the Gospel of Mark as the earliest surviving witness of the life of Yeshua ("Jesus" in Aramaic) of Nazareth. Dennis Kennedy applies his expertise in literary and performance studies to examining Mark as a literary and historical document and describes in straightforward style how it differs from the other Gospels, what it meant in its time, and how it has been used in history. He investigates the oral Jesus tradition before Mark, the radical act of writing about a crucified preacher from the hinterland, the expansion of the Messiah cult in the Roman Empire, and the character of the faith that the earliest Gospel proposes. Interspersed with incidents from Kennedy's own education, Creating Jesus seeks to reveal why Mark was written, the great influence it has had, and how it might question the nature of Christianity in the present.

In this episode, Steve Fretzin and Dennis Kennedy discuss:The intersection of the legal system and technology. Utilizing technology in ways that enhance the customer experience.Recognizing where you can free up time to do higher-level legal work. Why every lawyer should have a good, well-utilized CRM. Key Takeaways:Using technology for things like scheduling meetings, paying invoices, receiving payments, and other things not specific to the legal field is a great place to start if you're unsure of where to begin. There are technology applications that can make your life easier and free up time to do the creative legal work that you want to do. Legal students and younger lawyers are used to using more technology and when they start working, at many law firms, it feels like taking a step back in their use of technology. Don't let the fear of the unknown around technology stop you from leaning into and using it. "Figure out some problem that you have - something or some way you'd like to make your life easier that you think a technology might be to help you - then decide that you're not going to learn all of the technology, you're just going to learn one thing." — Dennis Kennedy Take the BE THAT LAWYER challenge at Fretzin.com/BTLChallenge! Artificial intelligence -- A I -- is all the rage. It's more than a tool for school kids to get help with papers, or pass the bar exam without breaking a sweat. But it can be a dangerous new tool for manipulating elections by unscrupulous campaigns, hostile foreign governments ... or Tucker Carlson. No longer can we say with certainty that “hearing or seeing is believing.” While what sounds or looks real could all be a deception created on a computer. Helping us wade through this new technology and the threats it portends is Dennis Kennedy, Director of the Center for Law, Technology and Innovation at MSU's School of Law. He is currently President of Dennis Kennedy Advisory Services where he focuses on legal technology, innovation, speaking, writing, and coaching. He also chairs the board of the American Bar Association's Legal Technology Resource Center. Dennis is a graduate of Georgetown Law School. =========================== This week's podcast is underwritten in part by EPIC-MRAEPIC ▪ MRA is a full service survey research firm with expertise in: • Public Opinion Surveys • Market Research Studies • Live Telephone Surveys • On-Line and Automated Surveys • Focus Group Research • Bond Proposals - Millage Campaigns • Political Campaigns & Consulting • Ballot Proposals - Issue Advocacy Research • Community - Media Relations • Issue - Image Management • Database Development & List Management =========================== Links to Stories We're Watching This Week Generative AI is a legal minefield - Axios Biden-Trump fake audio argument - TikTok Could Michigan's GOP split into two? - WLNS 6 News In Senate bid, Slotkin betting voters are fed up with school shootings Michigan Senate OK's gun safety proposals on background checks, more - Detroit Free Press Gov. Funds were appropriated for a lighthouse at the entrance to Sandusky Bay on Lake Erie in 1819, and the limestone tower went into service in 1822. It was originally known as the Sandusky Light; the name Marblehead came into use later. The tower was raised 15 feet to its present height of 65 feet in 1898 and the light was automated in 1958. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources now owns the lighthouse tower, while the Coast Guard continues to maintain the active navigational light. The lighthouse is now part of nine-acre Marblehead Lighthouse State Park. The Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society operates a museum in the old keeper's house, with exhibits on the history of the lighthouse and the local area. Visitors can climb to the top of the lighthouse for spectacular views of Lake Erie and its islands. Courtesy of the Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society Above left: The reconstructed lifesaving station. Above right: The keeper's house. Courtesy of the Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society. A replica of an 1876 lifesaving station was completed on the park grounds in 2016, and a renovation of the lighthouse tower was completed last year. The annual Lakeside-Marblehead Lighthouse Festival is coming up on October 9, and Marblehead Light Station is celebrating its 200th anniversary next year. Summer Associates and the upcoming Fall Associates had a unique experience with their On-Campus Interviews (or OCI) over the past two years. Some of the recruits still have not actually met face to face, the members of their firm who hired them. We talk with Kerry Benn, Director of Series, Surveys & Data at Law360 about Law360 Pulse's recent survey on this topic and see how the firms, the students, and the schools adjusted during the pandemic. The survey of over 1,200 law students breaks down the popular firms and practice areas, how COVID impacted the process, and how things look as students make their way into the firms this Summer. Information Inspirations Our previous guests Cat Moon and Alyson Carrel are teaming up with Dennis Kennedy later this month for a TRB (Thorn, Rose, Bud) Retrospective. They are asking for law students, legal educators, law school administrators, and education experts to apply for this three-hour event to be held on June 24th and share their COVID era experiences and talk about what they should STOP doing (thorn), KEEP doing (rose), as well NURTURE (bud) once the pandemic comes to a close. The offices may be reopening in some areas, but in the theme of "let no crisis go to waste," Perkins Coie and some other firms are using this transition back to the office to test things like hoteling, reverse hoteling, and telepresence rooms. There won't be a return to a normal office routine, but the next year is going to show us what is "next" in how we work in a post-pandemic legal industry. Back in Ep. 112, we talked with Dan Packel about FisherBroyles' desire to show that a distributed law firm could compete with the AmLaw200 firms. Well, it turns out that they can. FisherBroyles came in at #198 this year and showed that alternative methods to the traditional law firm works. This is making other firms take notice of the competition. Trailblazers in diversity efforts want neurodiversity included in the conversation. Last week's guest is one of those trailblazers. In her recent Medium article, Dr. Caitlin Handron openly discussed her battle with bipolar disorder, and "outed herself" to her boss and to the world in order to take steps toward normalizing the discussion of neurodiversity in the workplace. Let's all learn from her bravery and willingness to be vulnerable, and continue this conversation with our colleagues at our own workplaces. We can probably all agree that technology has significantly impacted our world. But have you ever stopped to think about how much it has changed professions such as the legal or the medical profession? While it may seem like some of the older, more traditional professions are immune to the impact of technology, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Technology is significantly shaping the legal field, from the practice of law to the way clients interact with their attorneys. Dennis Kennedy is an information technology lawyer and legal technology author well-known for promoting innovation and the use of technology in the practice of law. He currently focuses on legal technology, innovation, speaking, writing, and coaching and is an adjunct professor in the LegalRnD program at Michigan State University College of Law. Dennis is a Fellow of the College of Law Practice Management and recently finished a term of three years as chair of the board of the American Bar Association’s Legal Technology Resource Center. Dennis retired as Senior Counsel for the Digital Payments & Labs group at Mastercard in 2017. Whether or not you are an attorney or are currently involved in a legal matter, the law impacts us all. As a former lawyer, I like to think of the law as the invisible rules that hold our society together. Everything we do, from marriage, to children, to jobs, to driving, to buying a home or renting an apartment is governed by some sort of law, and at some point in your life, you will probably have to deal with a lawyer. So why not stay abreast of the way technology is changing the law, as well as our world!
