India's most valuable company Reliance Industries held its 45th Annual General Meeting on Monday with Chairman Mukesh Ambani making a slew of announcements. The AGM was held virtually for the third time in a row. After Reliance Jio bought spectrum worth $11 billion in the $19-billion 5G spectrum auction, Ambani laid out the timeline for the launch of Jio's 5G services. Jio is targeting a Diwali launch for 5G in top cities including Chennai, Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai before expanding across India by December next year, which is 18 months from now. The telecom major will deploy standalone 5G, which won't depend on its existing 4G infrastructure. Hence, the delivery is expected to be faster. Reliance is investing $25 billion to build the pan-India 5G network. Jio also announced its foray into private 5G networks, adding that it is working with Google to develop ultra-affordable 5G smartphones for India. Akash Ambani, who replaced his father as the Chairman of Jio, announced the launch of Jio AirFiber service and the JioAirFiber Home Gateway device – a wireless WiFi hotspot connected to Jio's 5G. It promises fibre-like Gigabit-speed internet over the air without any wires. JioFiber customers can opt to use a new service called the Jio Cloud PC, which offers virtual PC hosted in the cloud. Targeted at students, gig-workers and small businesses, customers will pay only to the extent they use the cloud PC. The telecom major said, it will expand its partnership with Qualcomm to develop cloud-based 5G solutions for India. Isha Ambani, executive director of Reliance Retail Ventures, demonstrated the JioMart integration on WhatsApp. This will enable users in India to browse through JioMart's entire catalogue, add items to the cart and make the payment to complete the purchase, all without leaving the WhatsApp platform. Isha Ambani further announced that Reliance will launch its FMCG business this year as it takes its private label brands to general trade. Mukesh Ambani said Reliance will invest $9.4 billion in the oil-to-chemicals business over five years to expand capacities in existing and new value chains. Reliance will strengthen its polyester and Vinyl chains through the building of new facilities and expansion of existing units as well as setting up a carbon fibre plant. Expanding on the previous plan to invest over $10 billion to build four giga factories at Jamnagar for solar cells and modules, fuel cells, batteries and green hydrogen, Ambani announced a plan to set up a fifth giga factory for power electronics. Deven Choksey, Managing Director, KR Choksey Investment Managers says, size of RIL to double in terms of profit. Jio will be the leader in profit generation. $25-bn Jio investment signals it could be listed. The country's second-richest man announced his family succession plan for the group, when he listed the separate businesses his three children will lead. Akash will head the digital business housed in Jio, his twin sister Isha will lead the retail business and their younger sibling Anant has joined the new energy business. Ambani said the siblings have inherited his father and RIL founder Dhirubhai Ambani's mindset. However, Ambani insisted he isn't retiring yet and will “continue to provide hands-on leadership as before”.
As our country celebrates its Platinum Independence anniversary, here's a throwback on the many events that brought financial markets to where they are today. Even before India got independence in 1947, it had at least one stock exchange up and running in BSE in 1857. The other prominent exchange, the NSE, was incorporated in 1992, and was recognised as a stock exchange by market regulator Sebi in 1993. BSE, meanwhile, remains one of the world's oldest stock exchanges and the 8th largest exchange in terms of market capitalisation. One of the first few steps taken by the government post-independence was enactment of The Capital Issues (Control) Act that set the ball rolling for the Indian capital markets. And as investors equated investing in stock markets with wealth creation, the pool of investors kept growing over time. At the end of fiscal year 2021-22, the total demat account holders in India stood at 89.7 million compared to 35.9 million at the end of FY19 – up almost 150% in three years. In all these years, veterans have innumerable stories of booms and busts spread across decades. Within a decade of independence, India saw its first market scandal, involving Life Insurance Corporation of India and Haridas Mundhra group. The scam led to the resignation of the then finance minister. After the markets stablised, Reliance Industries launched its initial public offer in 1977, which market mavens say, brought about the equity cult in India. In fact, Dhirubhai Ambani had booked an entire football stadium in 1985 to hold its annual general meeting - a gala event for its 12,000 shareholders back then. And then there was no looking back for the equity markets then. After the big-bang ‘reformist' Budget in 1991, FPIs and FIIs were allowed to invest in Indian equities in 1992. Today, they hold stocks worth around a fifth of India's total market capitalisation. The period, thereafter, saw more frequent troughs than peaks. The Harshad Mehta scam hit the markets in April 1992, when the Sensex tanked 13%. While Mehta died in 2001, the stories of his modus operandi live on through OTT series like Scam 1992. The crashes that followed, include the Dot-com collapse of 2000; the 2004 fall post NDA's defeat in the national elections; and 2008's market slump amid the Global Financial Crisis. The GFC led to a sharp crash with the Sensex plunging 63% in 2008 to under 7,700 levels. 2008 also saw India's financial capital under siege amid the 26/11 attacks, rattling investors. The last market crash came in 2020, when the world was hit by the Covid-19 pandemic. The Sensex and Nifty closed at their lowest level in four years, after nosediving 33% in just 13 trading sessions. In the commodity market, WTI crude oil futures dropped 306% on April 20, 2020, to settle at minus 37.63 dollars a barrel. The one-day plunge was the largest based on records going back to 1983. But, between these crashes, there were periods of massive gains. India's Sensex touched 1,000-mark for the first time in 1990, and marched to hit the 10,000-mark in 2006. The index, then, hit the milestone of 25,000 in 2014, and scaled mount-50K in 2021. The lifetime high for the markets was during the same year. Going ahead, as India looks forward to its Centenary year celebration 25 years down the line, equity investors in India are optimistic that the BSE Sensex 30 will have scaled the 100,000-mark by then.
Have you read The Polyester Prince: The Rise of Dhirubhai Ambani? Chances are, not! While pirated copies may be in circulation, this episode of The Longest Constitution looks at the Ambani's filed an injunction against the book's publishers. This is not unusual. Private and powerful corporations and individuals have used the clause of defamation, both under Article 19(2) of the Constitution of India, as well as the Indian Penal Code (IPC) to obstruct the publication of a book of public interest, with success. We also look at how much a candidate can spend in an election campaign and the laws related to that. Plus, we examine the growth of the PIL in the 1980s looking at a very pertinent case: air pollution in New Delhi. Reading material: 1. As a teen, Aryahi Agarwal, a student of Dhirubhai Ambani International School in Mumbai, says she found it difficult to source an eco-friendly, organic, and affordable perfume line for teeangers. This, along with brainstorming sessions with her Thapar Entrepreneurs Academy (formerly YEA!) mentors, led her to launch her own brand of perfumes for teenagers, Bella Fragrances. Aryahi says she was heavily inspired by the biographies of renowned businesspersons like Walt Disney, Warren Buffett, Steve Jobs, and Dhirubhai Ambani, and particularly intrigued by Coco Chanel's revolutionary ideas that rocked the fashion world. Aryahi came up with the perfume by herself, after over six months of R&D and constant testing of formulae by mixing essential oils, until she finally got the right quantities with the right oils. Bella Fragrances is currently being sold on Instagram via the business's handle, for Rs 599 a bottle. The fragrances are handcrafted by her in a facility in Mumbai, with a capacity of 500 bottles a month. It is available in two fragrances: Bella Naturals & Bella Organics The product is entirely organic, eco-friendly, and handmade. It is made using essential oils and denatured alcohol, derived mainly from roses to give it a floral scent. Within a month of its launch, the business has already made over Rs 60,000 in revenue and Rs 45,000 in profit, with a gross margin of 65 percent. This episode was inspired from a book Ambani - A Success Story by Author Mr. N. Chokkan published by Kilakku Pathipagam.
A very inspirational success story of legendary entrepreneur Mr. Dhirubhai Ambani who started his career as a petrol pump attendant & went on building the largest company in India. Its a story of a man who believed that we all should see big dreams & must work towards them.
Instagram link: https://www.instagram.com/nascent_carbon/ Wanted in over 100 criminal cases in eight states and sentenced for an incredible 113 years by various courts, Natwarlal had made eight daring escapes from various jails and was the ultimate confidence trickster. He was last seen in 1979, when he audaciously escaped while being taken for a trial in Bombay and since then had been believed dead. Natwarlal's modus operandi has hardly changed from his heyday. Only the yarn he spins has been updated. Three months ago, dressed in a spotless white shirt and trousers, he posed as D.N. Tiwari, personal assistant to the Union Finance Minister N.D.Tiwari and went to a watch dealer in New Delhi's busy Connaught Place. He told the proprietor, Surendra Sharma, that the Congress(I) Parliamentary Party was having an important meeting in which the members were to be presented watches. The next day he came back in a chauffeur-driven car and told Sharma to pack 93 watches and send an employee with him to North Block, where he would issue a bank draft. At North Block, the old man strode in confidently, asking Sharma's employee to wait outside. He soon returned with an authentic looking draft for Rs 32,829 and took the watches. Two days later Sharma's bank reported that the draft was a forged one. He used the trick with variations in different cities. To a watch dealer in Varanasi he presented himself as Ambika Pandey, purchase officer of the district judge, looking for watches to present to the employees. He made off with 80 watches worth Rs 25,000, again by presenting a forged draft. A Shajahanpur watch dealer was stung for 48 watches. And in Kanpur, a watch dealer in the busy Sadar Bazar even bribed him with a VIP suitcase, while parting with 83 watches. But he tried the trick once too often. Last month when he approached a Gorakhpur watch dealer with the same story, the alert owner called the police, who arrested him. India's Greatest Conman Natwarlal Who Sold Taj Mahal Thrice The life and crimes of a master criminal Natwarlal He duped hundreds of people of crores of rupees and used more than 50 aliases to disguise himself. Even before meeting Mukesh Ambani, Nita Ambani had grabbed the attention of Dhirubhai Ambani who played cupid in their relationship. To know more watch the video.
Professor Sunil Khilnani from the King's India Institute in London, on the life and legacy of the Indian business tycoon Dhirubhai Ambani, founder of Reliance Industries. The son of a penurious schoolteacher, Ambani credited himself with an almost animal instinct for trading, coupled with a steel trap memory and an appetite for audacious risk. Today fifteen per cent of all India's exports go out in his company's name. It's the ultimate rag to riches story, mixed with street cunning and dazzling deals. In one case, which began with a tip from an underworld don, Ambani executives were accused of violating the Official Secrets Act by possessing sensitive Cabinet documents, including a draft national budget. A joke quickly did the Delhi rounds: the budget wasn't leaked to Reliance; Reliance had leaked the budget to the ministry. Producer: Mark Savage Editor: Hugh Levinson.
Sam Wilkin, a senior advisor to Oxford Economics, discussed how Indian entrepreneur Dhirubhai Ambani completed one of the most unlikely "rags to riches" stories of modern times, and what lessons his experience can teach entrepreneurs in India today. Interviewed by Alexandra Mousavizadeh, Director of Indices at the Legatum Institute.
