My guest today is the creator of the global bestseller and smash hit TV adaptation, The Discovery of Witches, Deborah Harkness. Now, I'm not sure if you know this about me, but I'm a bit obsessed with all things witchy, and I've been a devotee ever since the proof of the first book landed on my desk and I tumbled headlong into the world of Diana Bishop. Can you say, ob-sessed? But before all this Deborah was a scholar. A historian who teaches the history of science at the University of Southern California, she is an authority on alchemical manuscripts and for her doctorate researched the history of magic and science in Europe between 1500 and 1700. Sound familiar? There's more, just a couple of years ago Deborah discovered she was descended from not one, but two of the Salem women. Deborah joined me to talk about the latest book in the All Souls series - The Black Bird Oracle - which takes us to Salem and the descendants of the witch trials. We discussed also her life changing cancer diagnosis, why women's pain is endlessly ignored, why she won't be blunting her sharp pointy edges for anyone and why she loves being the crone of dark academia. * You can buy all the books mentioned in this podcast at The Shift bookshop on Bookshop.org, including The Blackbird Oracle by Deborah Harkness and the book that inspired this podcast, The Shift: how I lost and found myself after 40 - and you can too, by me. * If you enjoyed this episode and you fancy buying me a coffee, pop over to my page on buymeacoffee.com. • And if you'd like to support the work that goes into making this podcast and get a weekly newsletter plus loads more content including exclusive transcripts of the podcast, why not join The Shift community, come and have a look around at www.theshiftwithsambaker.substack.com • The Shift (on life after 40) with Sam Baker is created and hosted by Sam Baker and edited by Juliette Nicholls @ Pineapple Audio Production. In our third episode, Katrina and Genny dive into the different witchy “types” that might resemble your fantasy protagonist or secondary character. We also show the difference between a witch type (good) and a witch stereotype (bad)—although, we do toss around the word archetype in there willy-nilly. Genny's dog, Hazel, serenades us throughout the episode with her sultry Lauren Bacall bark, while Katrina reveals that she records with her head in a padded box. Throughout the episode, we sprinkle some serious love and devotion to Deborah Harkness and her character Diana Bishop from the All Souls series.Witches come in all shapes and sizes, and their powers manifest in a variety of beautiful ways. We hope that by the end of this episode our listeners get a better sense of the rich diversity within the witchy community and that there is so much more to this practice than black cats, pentagrams, and an obsession with Stevie Nicks's wardrobe. When writing about your witch character, for the love of god do your research, but don't feel compelled to stick within these categories. When children have positive experiences it contributes to good mental wellbeing in adulthood. But when children experience trauma, it can lead to lifelong challenges including substance abuse, anxiety disorders, depression, and other debilitating mental health conditions. The Returns On Wellbeing Institute Podcast interviewed Diana Bishop, a Senior Learning Consultant and Certified Health and Wellness Coach for Kaiser Permanente, San Diego, about Adverse Childhood Experiences (or ACEs) defined as stressful events that occur in childhood that can have lasting effects through adulthood. In this interview, Diana explains how ACEs contribute to workplace absenteeism, healthcare costs, and mental illness, and provides an overview of ACEs to help employers understand: The role of childhood experiences in shaping human health An overview of ACEs and their relation to mental health How do ACEs affect adults in their everyday functioning Findings from the CDC-Kaiser Permanente ACE Study She shows how employers must help employees address untreated childhood trauma that can lead to mental health issues, chronic illnesses, and poor work performance. She also advises how to reduce stigma about ACEs, and incorporate ACE Scores as part of workplace mental health initiatives and helping employees get the help they need.
We meet Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont in Oxford. A mysterious book shows up, some sketchy witchy stuff goes down, and a budding romance simmers. We meet some cute vampires, some little B witches, and WTF is the correct way to pronounce "daemon?" Join us for our discussion of chapters 1-17 of "A Discovery of Witches" from the All Souls series by Deborah Harkness.
TBOL ch 2A restless Matthew Clairmont makes the rounds and pays a few castle calls to the current residents of Sept-Tours. He's on edge, and his friends and family -- rightly -- welcome him back with wary caution. In the end, it takes Diana to bring him to his center (as he does for her). BUT, there's one family member who wonders out loud (to say the least) why Diana Bishop is harboring the blood song of his long-dead father, Philippe de Clermont. Like Matthew, the Daemons are also restless souls in this pandemic, so they take the opportunity to talk A LOT, thus, the lengthy episode! Take it in shifts, or binge it at once! No judgement! The Dames are back to close out The All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness in their last book club discussion of 2019! This series has been a wild ride and it has saved so much for this last and final book. Although we aim to impact adults in the workplace, our childhood experiences teach us how to cope with life and affect our overall health and wellness. Wellness programs often offer simple health solutions or use words that may be triggering for employees with adverse childhood experiences. How can we influence employee health when we don’t have the full picture of what an employee has been through in their life? Today’s guest, Diana Bishop, has done an extensive amount of work to understand the implications of Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), how they affect adult health and wellness, and what strategies wellness professionals can use to work through ACEs rather than against them. Diana is a Senior Learning Consultant, certified Health and Wellness Coach, and Life Care Planning instructor trainer for Kaiser Permanente, San Diego. With 20 years of experience working with ACEs, as well as personal experience understanding and working through childhood trauma, she is an industry expert on developing programs for people with high ACE scores and is dedicated to meeting employees where they’re at in their emotional journey, not just their health and wellness. In today’s episode, Diana shares not only her professional background but also her experience growing up as a child in a volatile home. She explains the origins of the Adverse Childhood Experiences Study and breaks down its implications including a higher risk of chronic disease and premature death. Diana encourages wellness professionals to take a look at the language surrounding health initiatives and discusses some helpful strategies to avoid isolating and disengaging employees with high ACE scores. Lastly, she explains the benefit of tapping into employer groups to boost wellness programs and how important it is for wellness professionals to explore their own ACE score. SON ch 33 & 34In this double feature episode covering two chapters of Shadow of Night, we look at the dangerous creatures in and around Diana Bishop & Matthew Clairmont's lives. First, we are confronted with the anomaly that has gotten away from the de Clermonts, and landed into the hands of Peter Knox (and Gerbert!); poor Pavel! Second, we are launched back to Tudor England, to manage the temper-ridden monarch, and meet Matthew's legendary sister, Louisa de Clermont. She's using our resident love-sick, unstable, drugged-out, tale-telling, finger-pointing daemon as her guide. Diana’s determination not to be frightened by Matthew as he struggles to control his predatory instincts around her fuels a dangerous connection between the two of them. SON ch 18We meet Andrew Hubbard, and according to Gallowglass and Hancock, we probably should've met him much earlier. Our thoughts on him range from a creepy cult leader, to an altruistic ruler of the land of misfit creatures; we discuss this and how Diana Bishop is the one who has to fix this mess that Matthew Clairmont has created for her (again!). We forgive you, Matthew, but boy do you irritate us sometimes! Stay tuned for our reaction to the ADOW TV trailer, and news that was new to us at the time of recording. SON ch 13-14Beginnings, endings -- change. Boy, do we get a dose of all three throughout these two chapters! We watch Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont take their first steps as an "official" husband and wife team. We spend some quality moments with Philippe de Clermont before we bid him farewell. Then we are launched to present-day Sept-Tours in the company of Sarah Bishop, Emily Mather and Ysabeau de Clermont by an anomaly -- Philippe's note to Ysabeau. It did the reader good, because it provided us some comfort by informing Ysabeau that he had just seen Matthew and Diana safely off. Further on, the same note helps Ysabeau begin to end her period of greiving. Ysabeau rounds up today's journey by serenading us as we proceed on to London, The Blackfriers in future chapters, yet we remain forever changed by this particular trip to Sept-Tours.See full show notes: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/37Join us on Patreon (as little as $1 monthly will gain you access to extra episodes + different level incentives for those who join at higher tiers!)A Discovery of Witches TV News info (Continually updated; scenes, sets, trailer video, official photographs, casting + more)All Souls Universe Book News for 2018 (Continually updated: The World of All Souls and Time's Convert - formally known as "The Marcus Book" - news; cover reveals, release dates, descriptions, tour info + more)Buy tickets to All Souls Con 2018Become a Discusser (contact info located there as well), or for US listeners: text ADOW to 444999Email us directly: DaemonsDiscuss@gmail.comCall & Leave a voicemail! 1 (360) 519-7836 or hit us up on SpeakPipe Our Podcast Page: DaemonsDiscuss.com Our Main Site: DaemonsDomain.com Join our Facebook Group: Daemonic Discussers (the word is "F***ing Firedrake" - be sure to answer the second question as well. SON ch 11Well, the title tells the story. Wordplay: Matthew Clairmont and Philippe de Clermont have words to throw at each other! Sharp and pointed like the swords they pick up later, we learn how they interact in conflict. Swordplay: We watch how the words are interchangeable with daggers and swords in the hay barn. Bloodplay: We find out for the first time in this series that Matthew has an affliction -- blood rage. Diana Bishop is also made Philippe's blood-sworn daughter. What does this mean? It means she will not be alone in the world when she is confronted by enemies, even if they come in the form of a witch named André Champier.Another jam-packed episode! Take it in shifts, split it on your commute between home and work, zone out during the extra 20 minutes ... or just listen to the whole thing in one caffeine-fueled binge session #nojudgement.
SON Ch 9Matthew Clairmont is absolutely puny according to Philippe de Clermont. He's not been taking care of himself properly, and needs excercise! While the Philippe takes care of his puny son, Diana Bishop's tasks are decidedly NOT puny. She needs to learn how to manage a staff, the household, her uncertainty, HER LIFE! We begin with a brooding moody vampire in the antichambers, and end with a facination with the whole gambit our witch is being set up for. She's playing for keeps, and Philippe is making sure of it!Later in the episode we review the unedited proof sampler of The World of All Souls (no spoilers). Delight ensues! Happy listening!SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!
SON ch 8Off to Sept-Tours we go! 1590's style! As we travel with Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop, we make a few stops. With each step closer to Philippe de Clermont, we not only wonder about him, but we start to really think about who Matthew de Clermont is! Diana has a long road of discovery ahead of her. A long(ish) episode, but you won't want to miss a bit of it, because after our chapter discussion, we have a chat about All Souls Con 2018 with Laura Ventura! Philadelphia, here we come! Also, Angela presents evidence of somebody poking some Daemon-styled poppets in their little poppet tongues. An adventure, as always!SPOILER ALERT! We (The Daemons) approach this podcast with an assumption that the listener has read The All Souls Trilogy, including A Discovery of Witches, Shadow of Night, and The Book of Life. If you haven't, and you don't mind, we certainly don't mind!
SON ch 3 & 4Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop get around to acknowledging the need for some witchy guidance. The intent: to return back to the present time armed with Diana's new magic, ward off the Congregation, and finally discover the secrets of Ashmole 782.Matthew's friends (The School of Night), offer help by coming up with elaborate stories to explain away her differences. Françoise tries to come to Diana's aid by calling for some gloves and shoes to be made. Matthew summons the Widow Beaton to the house as a witch teacher for Diana. The insane/hilarious fun of all of these interactions is what is covered in this episode!See full show notes: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/27A Discovery of Witches TV News info (Scenes, sets, trailer video, official photographs, casting + more)Our 2017 Holiday GiveawayBecome a Discusser (contact info located there as well)Email us directly: DaemonsDiscuss@gmail.comCall & Leave a voicemail! SON - ch 1 & 2The reader, like the collective heap of vampire and witch, is splashed into 1590, and it seems the temperature not as quite as comfortable as we had hoped! ADOW ch 39-43Endings, beginnings, change . . . we close the chapters of A Discovery of Witches. But first we observe Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont meeting Sophie and Nathaniel, and contemplate what their sudden unexpected appearance might mean. Later on, Hamish completes the conventicle, and with his leadership, the Bishop-Clairmont gang lay out a road map for their collective futures. From Sarah's famous scrambled eggs to quiet vows taken in a (mostly) empty house, this episode touches all of the events between. Description: ADOW ch 35-38Settled into the Bishop house, Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop are faced with many problems: avoiding the wrath of the congregation, making sense of Diana's magical limitations, and the figuring out the meaning of the wayward page from Ashmole 782 that the house delivered to them in chapter 34.We soon realize that the pairing of Diana Bishop and Matthew Clairmont may not just be fate -- it could be necessary for species survival! In the midst of this discussion, the Daemons attempt to navigate through a chapter that has always been a bit of an enigma for them; they dip their toes in the murky waters of geneology (with some guidance from the fandom's favorite real-life vampire scientist -- Dr. Shelli Carter -- who joins in as a fourth for the entire chapter block). We also get a taste of the 'war' Miriam speaks of -- ENTER JULIETTE! After sampling what thier common enemies have in store for them, Matthew and Diana plot an alternate course for their future.See full show notes: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/23Dr. Shelli's PowerPoint Presentation from All Souls ConBecome a Discusser (contact info located there as well)Email us directly: DaemonsDiscuss@gmail.comCall & Leave a voicemail! 1 (360) 519-7836 or hit us up on SpeakPipe Our Podcast Page: DaemonsDiscuss.com Our Main Site: DaemonsDomain.com Join our Facebook Group: Daemonic Discussers (the word is "F***ing Firedrake"!)Social Media: Twitter - @DaemonsDiscuss, Facebook - Daemons Discuss & Instagram - @daemonsdiscuss See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

ADOW - Ch. 21-25Matthew Clairmont and Diana Bishop have reached a new height in their relationship! Great, right? Well ... Ysabeau is skeptical, Matthew is tentative, and Domenico really has something to say about it, or more correctly, the CONGREGATION does!✮ What is the Congregation? We learn about the mysterious panel of nine in these chapters, and it appears it was a secret only to Diana! There so are many more secrets for Diana (and the reader) to uncover. It seems we all have a lot to learn about vampires -- names, hunting rituals, pack rules, family origins, and secret vampire organizations, to list a few!✮ From the vampire greeting her with a morning breakfast tray one day, to a late night declaration of love on another, we travel a bit further on the bumpy road to Bishop-Clairmont.See full show notes: go.DaemonsDiscuss.com/19 Contact us and/or become a Discusser!Call & Leave a voicemail! 1 (360) 519-7836 or hit us up on SpeakPipe Join us at All Souls Con!Our Podcast Page: DaemonsDiscuss.com Our Main Site: DaemonsDomain.com Social Media: Twitter - @DaemonsDiscuss, Facebook - Daemons Discuss & Instagram - @daemonsdiscuss See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
