Chicago footwork is essential to the city's history of electronic dance music and culture. It was pioneered in the 1990s by dancers, DJs and producers like DJ Rashad, DJ Spinn, DJ Clent, RP Boo and more on Chicago's South and West sides. And it's characterized by fast choppy vocal samples, interesting basslines and hi-hats and snares. The Era Footwork Crew are pioneers of the battle dance known as Chicago footwork. They have performed from Japan to Peru, performing and choreographing alongside leading artists such as Chance the Rapper, DJ Rashad, DJ Spinn, and Theaster Gates. The Eras work has been in short documentaries by VICE, the Canadian Broadcast Company, and the Chicago Tribune.

The guest for this episode is Chicago OG footwork, juke, and house music DJ and producer Traxman. As a staple of the Chicago dance music scene for decades now, Traxman was one of the co-founders of the G.E.T.O DJZ INC clique a member of DJ Rashad & DJ Spinn’s Teklife CREW And the founder of TEKK DJZ, along with being a important part of the birthing of the Dance-Mania imprint. Having released music on countless record labels including recently dropping Tekvision Volume 2 via Teklife, Traxman continues to make music on his own terms and is constantly dropping music via his Bandcamp at traxman1.bandcamp.com. For our final podcast of 2015 we revisit the Coldcut and DK 'Essential Mix’, broadcast earlier this year on BBC Radio1 as part of Ninja Tune’s 25th Anniversary celebrations. Matt Black said of the mix "We wanted to represent as many of the current Ninja Tune roster as possible and also throw a couple of classics from the archives into the mix, in addition to some influential and inspirational tracks". We start with the brand new single from Roots Manuva, plus music from Ninja Tune artists Romare, Beat Spacek, Bonobo, Machinedrum, an unreleased track from Illum Sphere and 'Glassbeadgames' by Martyn and Four Tet, with classic tracks from The Bug, Squarepusher remix for DJ Food, DJ Vadim and cLOUDDEAD remixed by Boards of Canada. Meanwhile Dream Continuum grab a cheeky sample of Coldcut's People Hold On and we hear the Eddie Kendricks track that lyrically inspired said tune.
