__________ Über diese Songs vom Album "I'm Not Dead" sprechen wir im Podcast (16:22) – "Stupid Girls"(22:07) – "Who Knew"(29:29) – "I Have Seen The Rain"(39:35) – "Dear Mr. President"(47:53) – "I'm Not Dead"__________ Alle Shownotes und weiterführenden Links zur Folge "I'm Not Dead" findet ihr hier: https://x.swr.de/s/pinkmotead __________ Ihr wollt mehr Podcasts wie diesen? Imagine taking your favourite family memories and spinning them into a full-length movie. That's exactly what the Toronto filmmaker Seth Scriver has done with Endless Cookie, an animated documentary he created over nine years with his half-brother Peter. Though Seth and Peter lead radically different lives — separated by age, culture and geography — they say making a movie brought them closer together. Last summer, they joined guest host Talia Schlanger to talk about it.

Show notes: This is my first episode of "Drawing Funny" for 2026. I usually don't get political on this podcast, but after the last year we all went through, I had to share some of my thoughts and feelings on the state of affairs with the current administration. It's at the beginning of the episode and I promise- it's not too long of a rant. Hopefully you feel similarly on the subject, and are finding ways to deal with the craziness coming out of the capital. In the news section I share info on our upcoming Mid-South Cartoonists Association Monthly Dinner Gatherings at Garibaldi's Pizza (1st Tuesday of each month from 6-8pm), our ongoing MSCA "Art Of The Game" art show out at the Memphis Jewish Community Center, and the local con and art event schedule. Thanks to That Katie Jones for providing so much event info for this episode. There's so many things going on around town these days that it's really hard to keep up with it all! I also share some sad news from MSCA friend and family Bob Kimball. Bob's already beat cancer in 2025, and we send him much love and many good vibes his way as he prepares to fight against it again this year. You can help Bob by supporting him at GoFundMe by clicking here: www.gofundme.com/f/help-bob-kimball-fight-stage-4-cancer In this episode there are a couple shameless plugs in the promotion segments. I've got original art for sale including hand-drawn sketcovers and sketchcards out  at The Cellar Table Top Games & Comics in Bartlett, TN. I also have a few airbrushed monsterpiece and marker paintings done on canvas and wood panels. FREE delivery in the Memphis area- sorry no shipping. Check out my website for more details. And don't forget that I have a few pieces in the "Art Of The Game" art show. We'll have an artists reception this Thursday, January 8th from 6-8pm at the MJCC. Speaking of art shows, I pass along info on my solo "Family Portraits' airbrushed monsterpiece art show that's going to be upstairs in the 2nd Floor West gallery at Playhouse On The Square June 6-August 2, 2026. It's the same gallery that the MSCA's "Kitchen Sink" art show was this past summer. If you have any event or project news, or if you'd like to promote your podcast, you can email me at podcast(at)drawingfunny(dot)com. Exact details are in this episode. And feel free to stop by one of the MSCA events and discuss it all in person. I always love talkin' toons and sharing news! We're less than a dozen episodes away from our 100th episode, which will occur later this year. Hopefully sooner than later! Hope you all had a wonderful New Year and a  prosperous 2026. Take care and I look forward to seeing and talking to you at some of the many events here in Memphis and around the mid-south.LINKS:Drawing Funny Podcast website – www.drawingfunny.comLin Workman Art Site – www.linworkman.com/2025/11/art-sale-just-in-time-for-the-holidays/Mid-South Cartoonists Association/MSCA – www.midsouthcartoonists.orgMid-South Collectible Toy Show – www.facebook.com/events/Beale Street Monster Club – www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=61554859980515A. On this day in Tudor history, 17 October 1592, Frances Brooke, Lady Cobham died and was buried at Cobham in Kent. You may already know her face: she appears in the famous Cobham Family Portrait of 1567, that beautiful Elizabethan painting capturing an entire household, from Frances and her husband to six of their children. I'm historian and author Claire Ridgway, and in today's episode I'll introduce you to the woman behind the portrait: a loyal attendant who moved through the very heart of Elizabeth I's court. Frances served as Mistress of the Robes and Lady of the Bedchamber, rose high, briefly fell after her husband's involvement in the Ridolfi Plot, and was later restored to favour. Her story is one of quiet endurance, family alliances, and a life spent in the Queen's shadow, from Cobham Hall to the privy chamber itself. Like, subscribe, and ring the bell for more daily Tudor history, and tell me in the comments: Do you love the Cobham Family Portrait as much as I do? Falling Forward is about Meghan, a queer 27-year-old sculpture artist who is leaving New York City, moving in with her mom in Michigan and giving up on her artistic aspirations. However, packing her apartment proves to be a noisy affair, as all of Meghan's belongings-- including a Bong, a Self-Help Book, a Vibrator, a Family Portrait, a smart-device, and more—come to life, forcing Meghan to reckon with her own role in her terrible-horrible-no-good-very-bad year. #591 Cris Duncan is an experienced studio owner from Lubbock, Texas, well-known for his expertise in lighting and in-person photography education. The conversation dives into the transformative value of hands-on, in-person learning experiences for photographers at all stages, shining a spotlight on Cris' role with the Texas School of Professional Photography—a weeklong, immersive event designed to provide deep dives into specific areas of photography, rather than the surface-level "popcorn" approach of larger conferences.KEY TOPICS COVEREDIn-Person Education vs. Online Learning - Cris highlights the unique advantages of in-person workshops (like Texas School) over online resources. While online tools are valuable for information, in-person learning provides real-time feedback, hands-on practice, and the chance to safely make and correct mistakes.Structure and Tracks at Texas School of Professional Photography - Texas School offers deep-dives in four main tracks—digital post-production, successful studio/business growth, lighting and camera skills, and specialty/technique. Students select a single class for the week, fostering mastery and focused learning.Building Community and Lifelong Learning - Success is fueled by connecting with others, sharing experiences, and forming lasting friendships. Community learning fosters motivation, accountability, and creative problem-solving. Cris describes students returning year after year, advancing in their journeys, and forming strong professional networks.IMPORTANT DEFINITIONS & CONCEPTSConcierge Family Portrait Experience: A premium, tailored photography service that guides clients in everything from wardrobe choices to matching artwork with home décor, ensuring the final portrait complements the client's personality and environment.Texas School of Professional Photography: A weeklong educational event near Dallas, Texas, offering immersive, instructor-led classes to help photographers build foundational and advanced skills in a collaborative, hands-on environment.DISCUSSION & REFLECTION QUESTIONSIn what ways does hands-on, in-person instruction help you understand and retain new photography skills better than online learning? How might joining a creative community or peer group accelerate your own photography journey? What skills or business goals would you most want to “deep-dive” into if given a week-long immersive class?Reflect on a time you learned best by failing—and how feedback helped you improve.RESOURCES:Visit Texas School's Website - https://texasschool.org/Follow Cris Duncan on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/cjduncanSign up for your free CloudSpot Account today at www.DeliverPhotos.comConnect with Raymond! Gaining Access and Experience in Concert Photography with Zenia Monteagudo

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 10, 2025 45:24 Transcription Available

#579 Zenia Monteagudo is an experienced music and event photographer who has recently begun exploring family portraiture. Zenia shares her personalized journey into photography, starting from her early fascination with disposable and point-and-shoot cameras to a pivotal moment when she purchased a Sony camera on clearance at Target. This chance purchase set her on an unexpected path, leading to opportunities in music photography, including shooting concerts at iconic venues like Red Rocks.KEY TOPICS COVEREDStarting a Photography Journey & Building Confidence - Zenia's chance transition from hobbyist to semi-professional highlights the role of curiosity and saying "yes" to new experiences, even without a portfolio. Building confidence can be a struggle, but validation from others—such as bands requesting to use her photos—provided the encouragement to pursue her passion professionally.Concert Photography: Skills, Challenges, and Opportunities - Zenia offers a frank look at shooting concerts, from initial “shot in the dark” gigs to handling pro gear, unpredictable lighting, and the high-energy atmosphere of music events. She emphasizes the need for adaptability, technical growth (moving from kit lenses and manual focus to more sophisticated equipment), and the thrill of capturing authentic moments.Transitioning Between Genres & The Power of Candid Photography - The episode contrasts concert photography with family portraiture and events, exploring Zenia's process as she adapts to settings with different expectations, emotion levels, and technical requirements. Imagine taking your favourite family memories and spinning them into a full-length movie. That's exactly what the Toronto filmmaker Seth Scriver has done with the animated documentary “Endless Cookie,” which he created over nine years with his half-brother Peter. Though Seth and Peter lead radically different lives (they're separated by age, culture and geography), they say making a movie brought them closer together. They join guest host Talia Schlanger to tell us how they bonded through filmmaking.

Send us a text message and share your feedback Meg Kissinger, a distinguished journalist and Pulitzer Prize finalist, takes us on an intimate journey through her life and work as she shares stories from her memoir, "While You Were Out." Raised in a family shadowed by mental health and addiction issues, Meg unveils the silent struggles that shaped her perspective on mental illness. Her investigative work on America's mental health system is both a career of advocacy and a personal mission.  Her passion is to challenge societal norms and encourage open conversations about mental health. We've all heard the term "stigma," but what if we reframed it as "discrimination"? Dive with us into a thought-provoking discussion on societal perceptions of mental illness—comparing the bias faced by those with mental health conditions to that experienced by patients with physical illnesses like leukemia or ALS. Our conversation touches on the power of language, the complexity of diagnostic labels, and the evolution of mental health issues through generations. Meg's personal anecdotes provide a profound insight into how past family secrets continue to impact our views today, urging for a more compassionate and enlightened approach.Family dynamics can be a source of both struggle and healing, especially when mental health challenges are involved. We explore the intricacies of seeking help, the transformative power of therapy, and the need for self-care when navigating a loved one's mental health journey. Through Meg's authentic storytelling, we witness the strength found in vulnerability and the healing potential of being honest with oneself and others. With a nod to music icons like Bob Dylan and Carole King, we close with gratitude, acknowledging the universal power of storytelling to connect and heal, inviting you to reflect on your own journey of understanding and acceptance.Support the show
