For well over a year before it came out, Jacques has been following on social media, the process and progress of author Katherine Rye Jewell while writing: LIVE From The Underground – A History Of College Radio. As Katherine would unearth believe to be lost treasures (like CMJ charts, schools play list from 1978, articles in favor of censorship for a college radio station from the same colleges student new paper) she'd post these finds and allow you to ride shotgun through every step of the way. Being a tiny world, Katherine is a professor at Fitchburg State … The same Fitchburg State (somehow) Jacques graduated from AND where he was a DJ on their station WXPL (which is where he met his bandmate/brother John.  And either John or friend of podcast Professor Chris Cook brought Katherine to Jacques' radar!) This is a DEEP dive into the over-all history of college radio – how senate land grand acts of the 1930s… led to Pixies and Mission Of Burma becoming college music darlings despite EVERYTHING working against college radio from existing – unsupportive school administrations AND student organizations, record companies not seeing them as worth sending free records to … to Tipper Gore – Parent Music Council and the Batman-forsaken FCC! Ben Railton's book Of Thee I Sing: The Contested History of American Patriotism (Rowman & Littlefield, 2021) is a cogently written history of the idea of American patriotism. Railton argues that there are four distinct forms of patriotism as practiced in the United States (U.S.) including (1) celebratory, or the communal expression of an idealized America, (2) mythic as based on national myths that exclude specific communities, (3) active, or acts of service and sacrifice for the nation, and (4) critical as expressed in arguments about how the nation has fallen short of its ideals in the interest of bringing the nation towards a more perfect union. He uses the four verses of “America the Beautiful” as a backdrop to illustrate the four versions of American patriotism while tracing the history of the idea from the American Revolution to the 1980s. Railton's text includes an “Introduction,” eight concise chapters, and a “Conclusion” section. In the “Introduction,” a robust argument is made for the existence of competing visions of American patriotism. Railton begins here with the story of Army Lt. Colonel and National Security official Alexander Vindman who provided damaging testimony against Donald Trump regarding a call Trump had with the president of the Ukraine. Vindman and his brother were subsequently criticized by Trump and his supporters and removed from their prestigious positions. This story is used as an example to demonstrate the competing forms of patriotism that are at times predicated on acts of service to the nation (such as with military service) or defined by a celebratory patriotism as the author notes, “What underlies such attacks on Vindman's truth telling as unpatriotic is a definition of patriotism that equates it with a celebration of the nation.” Railton further argues that this “celebratory patriotism in embodied in shared communal rituals” such as with the singling of the national anthem, with hand on heart and hat in hand, reciting the pledge of allegiance, and closing speeches with phrases like “God bless the United States of America.” These are acts that “require from their participants an endorsement of the celebratory vison of the nation.” The remaining chapters outline the various forms of American patriotism over time. In the first three chapters, the origins of celebratory patriotism in the era of the Revolutionary War, the rise of mythic patriotism in the early nineteenth century, and the emergence of active patriotism in the Civil War Era are discussed. Expressions of celebratory patriotism were produced by Revolutionary Era writers such as Tom Paine and Benjamin Franklin who communicated “foundational visions of an ideal America worth fighting for.” During the nineteenth century, mythic patriotism expanded out of events such as the War of 1812 and the creation of the national anthem. This was also a time of reform and “critical patriots” such as David Walker, William Apess, and Maria Sedgwick took the nation to task over issues such as slavery in an attempt to forge a “more inclusive vision of America.” The Civil War Era ensured the further development of critical patriotism as expressed by Frederick Douglass, Lucy Larcom, and Martin Delany. Ben Railton is Professor of English and Coordinator of American Studies at Fitchburg State, and the author of We the People: The 500 Year Battle of Who is American (Rowman & Littlefield, 2019). Williams Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor of African American history in the Department of History and Anthropology at Monmouth University where she teaches courses in African American history and U.S. history. Welcome to Episode 72 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. This is our sixth of eight regional preview pods -- this one covers the New England region and its seven conferences. Topics include: CCC (at 1:40) Salve Regina (at 2:00) is the class of this conference and boasts two of the best strikeout pitchers in the region atop their rotation Teams (at 4:50) like Endicott, Roger Williams, Western New England, and Nichols will need to have a lot go right to compete with the Seahawks GNAC (at 7:10) The last 12 titles have gone to either St. Joseph's (Maine) or Suffolk...maybe this is the year a team like Johnson & Wales could break the streak? LEC (at 10:20) Southern Maine might be returning the most loaded #Year5 squad in the entire country and make have opened up an unusually large gap on their conference competition UMass-Boston has been a perennial regional team but with a late start and a lot of new faces in the lineup, there's more questions than normal entering their season. We still love the Beacons, though. Rhode Island has emerged as a strong sleeper but lost some key pieces from their pitching staff UMass-Dartmouth, Eastern Connecticut, and Castleton will probably hang around this conversation as well MASCAC (at 19:15) Westfield State will probably continue to run the show but their legendary 1-2 punch is gone so maybe there's room for a team like Fitchburg State, Worcester State, or Salem State to contend NECC (at 21:28) Mitchell has been putting up big win totals vs. bad competition in recent years but now are starting to look more like a legitimately fearsome regional contender New England College had one hell of a run in the 2019 postseason but now their coach and some of their best players departed for conference rival Eastern Nazarene, ooooo spicy spicy!!! NESCAC (at 28:20) It seems that only four teams will be participating in this conference in this pandemic season, with Tufts and Trinity (CT) likely the ones fighting for the title NEWMAC (at 34:30) Babson is losing some key contributors and won't have the traditionally insane SOS to boost their resume. Beavers are always good, though.  Wheaton (Mass.) is now more than just a Really Good Fundamental Baseball Team -- they've got super high-end talent that makes them a legitimate World Series contender MIT isn't playing, which is a bummer UAA Brandeis (at 40:15) are gonna have a tough time scheduling with all the conference-only restrictions but their roster actually looks pretty solid! We concluded (at 41:30) with our player and pitcher of the year picks for the region, and our teams to beat. Then we say goodbye. Thanks for listening! Welcome to Episode 60 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. This is our fifth of eight regional preview pods -- this one covers the New England region and its seven conferences. Topics include: CCC Salve Regina (at 2:00) is the class of this conference and boasts two of the best strikeout pitchers in the region atop their rotation Teams (at 4:50) like Endicott, Roger Williams, Western New England, and Nichols will need to have a lot go right to compete with the Seahawks GNAC (at 5:50) The last 12 titles have gone to either St. Joseph's (Maine) or Suffolk...maybe this is the year a team like Johnson & Wales could break the streak? LEC Southern Maine (at 9:15) lost a ton of All-Region talent and still is star-studded as ever; such is life as the Huskies UMass-Boston (at 15:00) has a whole lot of offense to replace but a deep pitching staff could still take them far Rhode Island (at 20:05) has emerged as a legit sleeper in this powerhouse conference UMass-Dartmouth (at 22:30) has some studs and Eastern Connecticut will certainly hang around MASCAC Westfield State (at 23:10) will probably continue to run the show but there is some room for a team like Fitchburg State, Worcester State, or Salem State to contend NECC Mitchell (at 25:25) returns most of their best players and are primed to regain control of this conference New England College (at 28:25) will need to replace a huge chunk of the squad that went on the amazing run to the super regional in 2019  NESCAC Tufts (at 32:30) has enough to defend their title, but a weak schedule means they'll have to win it again to get in Trinity (Conn.) (at 34:05) made us believers last year and might have one of the best players in the country Middlebury (at 37:30) and Williams should be solid NEWMAC Babson (at 39:10) is losing some key contributors but should remain an excellent team playing an impressively insane schedule Wheaton (Mass.) (at 42:45) continues to be a Damn Good Baseball Team™ and has some exciting young talent on both sides of the ball MIT (at 47:10) cannot be slept on as the defending champs, and they have similarly elite talent to matchup with their NEWMAC rivals We concluded (at 50:30) with a few other notable player shout outs, our player and pitcher of the year picks for the region, and our teams to beat. Then we say goodbye. Thanks for listening! We love a gutsy call. Sure, our job isn't being put on the line when a coach makes the decision to go for two at the end of a key game, but this is Division III -- the coach's job isn't really on the line on one play call. We love a little gamble, especially when it pays off. Whether you call a Philly Special (or something that looks similar but fools the broadcaster) or something else, rolling the dice and getting it makes for a great highlight. So, for Marietta and Simpson, which chose to go for two, or Wittenberg, which had no choice, it was a big Week 5, and Pat and Keith honor that by going for two with the D3football.com Around the Nation Podcast.  Plus, the Little Brass Bell went back home with the team it came with, nobody was trapping Mary Hardin-Baylor or Hardin-Simmons, UW-Whitewater wore UW-La Crosse out and just maybe The Streak is in play this year.
