It's time for the road trip across prep sports in Memphis. On this episode of Inside The Lines, Sturdivant is joined by Mase's head football coach, Ced Miller, to discuss the season, state championship, and more.
Sturdivant welcomes Cameron Reid, from 615 Preps, to discuss the week 3 slate of High School Football Playoffs across Tennessee.
“There's that R-word that wants to come up that I despise – resilience,” says Tiffany Sturdivant, executive director of Appalshop, a media, arts and community economic development organization that's been operating in the Kentucky mountains for more than five decades.“People are so strong….I think that's probably a testament to mountain people, right, or people anywhere who are disenfranchised and are just working with what they have. Use what you have until you can get more.”When you think about climate issues, your mind might go first to the coasts and rising sea levels. But climate issues in the middle of the country are also urgent – and the solutions being forged offer lessons for all of us, urban and rural alike. Appalachia reminds us that no matter where we're from, our futures are linked—and we're better when we work together to solve shared challenges. That's a critical lesson we took away at this year's Vanguard conference in Kentucky, where we brought together 40 emerging leaders in urban Lexington and rural Berea to learn from the region's innovators and gain fresh perspectives. Today's episode features Kelsey Cloonan of Community Farm Alliance; Chris Woolery from the Mountain Association; Sturdivant from Appalshop; Baylen Campbell with Invest Appalachia; and Jeff Fugate, Associate Professor at the University of Kentucky, who works closely with communities on urban planning and development. Together, they unpack the ways communities here are addressing the impacts of climate change, while also honoring Appalachian values and strengths. This episode is part of the series we're bringing you from this year's Vanguard conference in Lexington, Kentucky, where our theme was exploring the dynamics of urban-rural interconnection.

The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
In this week's Mind Remapping episode, Coach Leonard joins me to discuss how parents can prevent emotional incest, set healthy emotional boundaries with their kids, and talk about feelings without making them feel responsible for adult emotions. Buckle up as we explore this crucial aspect of parenting and learn practical strategies for promoting healthy emotional development in our kids. Key Takeaways: Emotional Incest - A situation where a child is placed in a role of emotional support usually reserved for a spouse. Setting Boundaries - Parents should clearly communicate what is appropriate and inappropriate in terms of emotional expression and interaction with children. Gender-Specific Roles - The same-sex parent plays a significant role in shaping a child's understanding of gender roles and relationships. Breaking a Pattern Through Conversation - An honest and open conversation between parents and children is crucial for breaking the pattern of emotional incest. Helpful Resource: The three-step approach of awareness, acceptance, and action can be a powerful tool for addressing challenges with a sense of mindfulness. Notable Highlights: "Mama was always harder on the daughter than on the son if dad was not in the picture, that spousification thing is starting to gel now." "It's important to understand that as that vacuum takes place because of a parent's absence, it's not appropriate for a child to take care of that." "Crossing the generational line comes from wanting to fix or solve the problem so that you can feel better." "It's ok for a parent to show emotion in front of their child so long as they're not putting the responsibility on the child for them to make their child responsible for fixing." "A child's first language is energy." "The most important person usually in the child's life is the same sex parent." "Denial is a river in Egypt, but it's also a thing we tend to do when we feel convicted." About Leonard (Luv Doc) Sturdivant Len holds a master's degree in psychology from N.C. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In This week's Mind ReMapping Moment, we revisit when we talked with a fellow Black Therapist who is a male and we are discussing a very important topic related about how our trauma affects our relationships, especially with our partners. · Can trauma make a person narcissistic? · How exactly does our trauma affect our relationship with the people we care about? · What can one do when their partner is living in trauma? These and a whole lot more await you in this week's special episode with Len Sturdivant, a love and relationship coach who offers individual, group, couples, and even online consultations. In this episode, he is going to teach us that to love others, we should first truly love ourselves. Today, we will learn about trauma, forgiveness, and healing. Are you ready to take part of your relationships? If you don't know how to love yourself first, how can you be in a "love relationship" with someone else? Prior to entering a relationship, a person who does not know how to love themselves will force YOU to take care of them. For you to control your relationship, you must learn to love yourself. Ways to begin the healing conversation between you and your partner Recognizing that when you get together, once the love hormone wears off, your eyes open and they can see. And there's a lot of conversations like our background like what it was growing up for you. If you survive the pre-marital stage, you're good. Recognize the trauma you are carrying Virtual intimacy with each other is tricky. Ever since sex became easier, love became harder to find. In terms of virtual intimacy between men and women, the first thing they go for is to be close. However, it causes us not to see beyond that. Know your partner more by observing how they handle break down, how they can self-soothe, and they handle their emotions right away. About Len Sturdivant: Len Sturdivant got his Master's Degree in Psychology from N.C. Central University and completed 140 hours of doctoral training in marriage and family therapy at Virginia Tech. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined once again by a fellow Black Therapist who is male. We are discussing a crucial topic related to how vertical intimacy strengthens our relationship with ourselves and others. · How well do we communicate? · What is vertical intimacy? · What do we need to begin cultivating closeness in the people we want to be close to? These and a whole lot more await you in this week's special episode with Len Sturdivant, a love and relationship coach who offers individual, group, couples, and even online consultations. In this episode, he will teach us that if we cannot create intimacy vertically, then we cannot connect with people. Today, we will learn about cultivating vertical intimacy, communication, and healing traumas. All about Vertical Intimacy. Vertical Intimacy is the foundation for reciprocity. Reciprocity and resentment cannot live in the same space. We cannot and do not always recognize when someone is bidding for connection, so learning the concept of vertical intimacy is so important. It is also helpful in friendships, parent-child relationships, and the broad spectrum. You must create intimacy vertically to connect with people. When we can love that inner child, we can have those reflections in our family and our community of ourselves, and we can experience that vertical intimacy. Cultivating vertical intimacy between two grown people. The first task we need to master is, how do I love myself? We need to re-parent ourselves and do the things that were not done for us early on so that we can begin to address the missing half of us. It would be great if we have a mate to help us re-parent that part of us. Communication Meaningful conversation is excellent- not just surface-level conversation- in which you go deep into chat and ask more intimate questions. It does not have to be deeply personal. It will involve some risk, and the risk is the reflection that comes back to you. You are connected when a person can see into you, no matter who they are; then dialogue is possible, and communication is possible. We have to cultivate the intimacy with ourselves. So when we develop, that means healing our traumas; it means acknowledging them because we cannot heal before we recognize them. We have to be open and willing to look and accept so that we can heal those traumas and those old conversations that have us unable to and unwilling to open up to love ourselves first and then forge that connection with another. 12 hours after the last episode published, the Court of Appeals came out with its revised decision in Sturdivant. The verdict? The 500-week cap on indemnity benefits is gone. I will discuss this decision and take a deep dive into what is actually left of the alleged pro-employer amendments that were made to the Act in 2011. I will also discuss what a veto-proof General Assembly can do to immediately address the problems that have arisen since those amendments were enacted 12 years ago.
Will and Tracy break down all the things that happened in spring football practice #7 for your UCLA Bruins including Dante gaining ground on Garbers, the unstoppable Sturdivant, Oladejo continuing to impress, and so much more. This one has been 12 years in the making. Ever since the Act was changed in 2011 and a 500-week cap installed regarding entitlement to indemnity benefits, employers and employees have been waiting for the Court of Appeals to decide what it actually takes to have benefits extended beyond 500 weeks. And now we have our answer. Or do we? The Court of Appeals actually vacated its own decision and will reassess after essentially eliminating the 500-week cap by its original decision. We will discuss this case along with a Woodson analysis of what it takes for an employer to be sued in civil court and not have the exclusive remedy protection typically afforded under the Act.
Will breaks down everything from day 3 of spring practice as he goes in depth on the QB battle, the RB rotation, the WR's (hint: Sturdivant!), and the defenseSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our hearing is one of our five finely tuned senses and arguably the most likely to be compromised by our lack of protection of it. This is particularly true for hunters and recreational shooters who often put their hearing in danger by pulling the trigger on firearms, even with lower calibers, without proper ear protection. High-intensity impulse sounds will permanently damage the inner workings of the ear, and people who shoot firearms are at a higher risk of noise-induced hearing loss than those who do not shoot. Sometimes damage can occur with just one shot taken without hearing protection. In this episode, we're joined by audiologist Dr. Grace Sturdivant who is the owner and founder of OtoPro Technologies to discuss the threat of hearing loss and what can be done to mitigate it by hunters and shooters. She explains the causes and effects of hearing loss and talks about the unique way her company can help clients save their hearing. In this episode's B-Team Report, Nick and The Doctor share stories about how a split-second decision cost one of them about $200, while the other ended up with a sore backside thanks to some help from Mother Nature. Does it cause us harm or good? · For celebrities, it is challenging for us to know their persona because of the image that they have to portray. · We can only suppress our suffering for a short while and then it gets too big and explodes. How does the world make it feel unsafe for us to show our emotions? Sometimes, we become a “supposed to” on someone else's world and that weighs heavily and makes it feel unsafe for us to be able to express ourselves. Sometimes, we don't leave room for the contradiction. We don't allow for two things to be true (i.e. you can be the life of the party but also show your struggles. Check in with people who you think are the bravest Here's one important thing we should be doing, if we haven't already: check in with people that you would never expect. Those you would never expect will have an emotional break down. Those you think are the strong, that they got it together. They are the ones who look like they got it all together but those are the ones that need checking in. Finding your “safe people” you can call to talk to when you're in a dark place It is important that we have people we can call when we are in the low points of our lives. It does not have to be many, two and three people is perfectly fine. These safe people are those we know we can rely on so when we are in our dark place, we can pick up the phone and talk to them and they know exactly how to interact with us to help maintain that safety and help us move through that dark space and put us back to our safe place. Find them before you're on the edge. About Len Sturdivant: Len Sturdivant got his Master's Degree in Psychology from N.C. The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: In this week's Mind ReMapping Moment, I am joined by a fellow Black Therapist who is a male and we are discussing a very important topic related about how our trauma affects our relationships, especially with our partners.
