Episode #451: Narrative as Infrastructure: Why Culture Now Runs on Memes

Crazy Wisdom

In this episode of Crazy Wisdom, I, Stewart Alsop, sit down with Trent Gillham—also known as Drunk Plato—for a far-reaching conversation on the shifting tides of technology, memetics, and media. Trent shares insights from building Meme Deck (find it at memedeck.xyz or follow @memedeckapp on X), exploring how social capital, narrative creation, and open-source AI models are reshaping not just the tools we use, but the very structure of belief and influence in the information age. We touch on everything from the collapse of legacy media, to hyperstition and meme warfare, to the metaphysics of blockchain as the only trustable memory in an unmoored future. You can find Trent in twitter as @AidenSolaran.Check out this GPT we trained on the conversation!Timestamps00:00 – Introduction to Trent Gillham and Meme Deck, early thoughts on AI's rapid pace, and the shift from training models to building applications around them.05:00 – Discussion on the collapse of the foundational model economy, investor disillusionment, GPU narratives, and how AI infrastructure became a kind of financial bubble.10:00 – The function of markets as belief systems, blowouts when inflated narratives hit reality, and how meme-based value systems are becoming indistinguishable from traditional finance.15:00 – The role of hyperstition in creation, comparing modern tech founders to early 20th-century inventors, and how visual proof fuels belief and innovation.20:00 – Reflections on the intelligence community's influence in tech history, Facebook's early funding, and how soft influence guides the development of digital tools and platforms.25:00 – Weaponization of social media, GameStop as a memetic uprising, the idea of memetic tools leaking from government influence into public hands.30:00 – Meme Deck's vision for community-led narrative creation, the shift from centralized media to decentralized, viral, culturally fragmented storytelling.35:00 – The sophistication gap in modern media, remix culture, the idea of decks as mini subreddits or content clusters, and incentivizing content creation with tokens.40:00 – Good vs bad meme coins, community-first approaches, how decentralized storytelling builds real value through shared ownership and long-term engagement.45:00 – Memes as narratives vs manipulative psyops, blockchain as the only trustable historical record in a world of mutable data and shifting truths.50:00 – Technical challenges and future plans for Meme Deck, data storage on-chain, reputation as a layer of trust, and AI's need for immutable data sources.55:00 – Final reflections on encoding culture, long-term value of on-chain media, and Trent's vision for turning podcast conversations into instant, storyboarded, memetic content.Key InsightsThe real value in AI isn't in building models—it's in building tools that people can use: Trent emphasized that the current wave of AI innovation is less about creating foundational models, which have become commoditized, and more about creating interfaces and experiences that make those models useful. Training base models is increasingly seen as a sunk cost, and the real opportunity lies in designing products that bring creative and cultural capabilities directly to users.Markets operate as belief machines, and the narratives they run on are increasingly memetic: He described financial markets not just as economic systems, but as mechanisms for harvesting collective belief—what he called “hyperstition.” This dynamic explains the cycles of hype and crash, where inflated visions eventually collide with reality in what he terms "blowouts." In this framing, stocks and companies function similarly to meme coins—vehicles for collective imagination and risk.Memes are no longer just jokes—they are cultural infrastructure: As Trent sees it, memes are evolving into complex, participatory systems for narrative building. With tools like Meme Deck, entire story worlds can be generated, remixed, and spread by communities. This marks a shift from centralized, top-down media (like Hollywood) to decentralized, socially-driven storytelling where virality is coded into the content from the start.Community is the new foundation of value in digital economies: Rather than focusing on charismatic individuals or short-term hype, Trent emphasized that lasting projects need grassroots energy—what he calls “vibe strapping.” Successful meme coins and narrative ecosystems depend on real participation, sustained engagement, and a shared sense of creative ownership. Without that, projects fizzle out as quickly as they rise. The battle for influence has moved from borders to minds: Reflecting on the information age, Trent noted that power now resides in controlling narratives, and thus in shaping perception. This is why information warfare is subtle, soft, and persistent—and why traditional intelligence operations have evolved into influence campaigns that play out in digital spaces like social media and meme culture.Blockchains may become the only reliable memory in a world of digital manipulation: In an era where digital content is easily altered or erased, Trent argued that blockchain offers the only path to long-term trust. Data that ends up on-chain can be verified and preserved, giving future intelligences—or civilizations—a stable record of what really happened. He sees this as crucial not only for money, but for culture itself.Meme Deck aims to democratize narrative creation by turning community vibes into media outputs: Trent shared his vision for Meme Deck as a platform where communities can generate not just memes, but entire storylines and media formats—from anime pilots to cinematic remixes—by collaborating and contributing creative energy. It's a model where decentralized media becomes both an art form and a social movement, rooted in collective imagination rather than corporate production.

Our town has such a romantic atmosphere this time of year and this event really shines a light on that,” Destination Gettysburg Director of Partnership Amy Welsh said. “In the first year of the event, we hoped for at least 50 couples. Amid chaos following Hurricane Helene, hear how BIPOC journalists redefine community engagement by addressing urgent needs in western North Carolina. This show is made possible by you! To become a sustaining member go to https://LauraFlanders.org/donate Thank you for your continued support!Description:  Some residents had no food, electricity, or cell service after Hurricane Helene ravaged the western part of North Carolina in October. Amidst misinformation and no information, local media had to step in to inform desperate people fast. This month on “Meet the BIPOC Press”, we explore what media outlets did to serve their people in that moment. Laura and co-host Amir Khafagy, a journalist with the New York City-based publication Documented, speak with two local BIPOC media projects that saved lives and expanded their relationship with their communities. Our guests are Brooklyn Brown, Reporter for Cherokee One Feather, the local newspaper of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians; and Magaly Urdiales, co-founder of JMPRO Community Media (“Justice Media Project”), a grassroots nonprofit that shares essential news and information with immigrant communities in Spanish, English and Mayan Indigenous languages. As they found themselves at the frontlines of relief efforts, how did these local outlets redefine journalism?“. . . Objectivity doesn't have to be cold. Reporting the facts doesn't have to be without passion. That's something I see a lot in community journalism, is that we are able to practice good journalism while also having a heart for the community that we're covering.” - Brooklyn Brown“I think many barriers and many problems of the corporate media came in place. We were called for people that were looking for a story, that were looking for somebody that was crying because their loved one wasn't found yet. And for us it was frustrated . . . in a moment like this, that can be transactional.” - Magaly UrdialesGuests:• Brooklyn Brown (Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians): Reporter, Cherokee One Feather• Magaly Urdiales: Co-founder, JMPRO Community Media• Amir Khafagy (Co-host): Journalist, Report for America Member, DocumentedWatch the broadcast episode cut for time at our YouTube channel and airing on PBS stations across the country Subscribe to episode notes via PatreonMusic In the Middle:  Novalima remix of “La Voz” by Eljuri, courtesy of the artist.  And additional music included- "Steppin"  by Podington Bear. Related Laura Flanders Show Episodes:• Where Do We Go From Here? Growing up as a bi-racial kid to a dad from Mexico and a mom from the American South sounds like a plot of a sitcom. One that Gabriel Cruz has the wit, sharpness, creativity, and voice to star in. He was inspired by his marine biologist grandfather to consider a career working with animals, but the math of it all pointed him in a more creative direction. His parents did not have access to education, which meant Gabriel had to navigate the unwritten rules of academia on his own. Listen to the story of how the kid with a 2.9 GPA earned his PhD and became Assistant Professor of Media Studies in the department of Mass Communication at North Carolina Central University in Durham, NC. Dr. Cruz shares some of his research on intersectional critical race analysis of popular culture, especially superhero narratives. Linda Shapley, the publisher of Colorado Community Media, describes herself as a longtime denizen of the state's media ecosystem. Indeed, she was at Colorado Politics and worked for 21 years for The Denver Post. “I've been a lieutenant for a lot of really great generals," she once said. "This is my opportunity to be a general.” CCM is a group of about two dozen weekly and monthly newspapers in the Denver suburbs. They were saved from chain ownership two years ago when they were purchased through a deal led by the National Trust for Local News. Last August we spoke with Elizabeth Hansen Shapiro, the co-founder and CEO of the trust. Shapley has talked about the power of representation as a visible Latina leader in an industry that has traditionally been dominated by white men. She says she hopes to use her position to encourage more diversity in journalism. Her mentor at the Post, Greg Moore, was a previous guest on What Works. You can listen to his episode here. Shapley grew up in northeastern Colorado, in a rural county. Her father had a dairy farm. When Dan was in Colorado doing research for our book, she told him that dairy farming is a lot like newspapers, because cows don't know it's Christmas. Also this week, we talk with Madison Xagoraris, a graduate student in the Media Advocacy Program at Northeastern University's School of Journalism. Xagoraris recently reported on KefiFM, a Boston-based Greek music outlet dedicated to serving the Greek and Greek American communities in the Boston area and throughout New England. Ellen has a Quick Take about retired journalists who are busy launching startup newsrooms. Nieman Reports has a piece by Jon Marcus that looks at the Asheville Watchdog in North Carolina, and the New Bedford Light in Massachusetts. These journalists say they want to help bolster the profession they gave their lives to by setting up nonprofit community news sites and mentoring younger reporters and editors. They aren't playing pickleball. Dan is in a Colorado state of mind: His Quick Take is on the fifth anniversary of the Denver Rebellion, when the staff of The Denver Post rose up against further newsroom cuts being imposed by its hedge-fund owner, Alden Global Capital. That rebellion sparked a revolution in Denver journalism.

Aurora has a large foreign born population and some of them turn to local ethnic media outlets for news and to stay informed about their home countries. There are over three dozen ethnic media organizations that serve the city and the greater metro Denver area. They are print, digital and broadcast outlets that publish in many different languages including English, Spanish, Korean, Chinese and Polish.Vera Azuka Idam started Afrik Digest in 2018, a free magazine and online publication, to bring African people together.“To be their voices, to raise their voices,” she said. “We know what they want. We understand the way to put it that they would understand.”There are hundreds of ethnic media outlets across the country. They face challenges like evolving digital and social media, loss of in-community businesses, an aging audience and lack of bilingual journalists. Fake news is a big issue too. It can stem from a variety of sources like targeted campaigns in communities of color that hope to influence elections to social media platforms like WhatsApp, WeChat and Facebook Groups. One of the biggest challenges in funding.“For those of us who are doing these things alone, maybe that's because we're struggling with, you know, with support and very minimum financial support,” said KETO 93.9 FM founder Endale Getahun.KETO is a multicultural immigrant community radio station that primarily serves African immigrants and refugees. The signal originates in Aurora and has a broadcast radius of 10 miles and also streams online. There are shows and music in English, French and Ethiopian languages like Amharic, Tigrinya and Oromo.Aurora partners with KETO, Afrik Digest and other ethnic media outlets to ensure the different immigrant groups have equal access to information and resources coming from the city.“Networking with others is very helpful because you get to share experience,” said KETO-FM 93.9 founder Endale Getahun who attended the event.“I feel like for many of these communities, they really trust, you know, these ethnic media organizations,” said Ricardo Gambetta, Aurora's manager of International and Immigrant Affairs. “They know that they want the best for these communities.” Afrik Digest on Facebook Afrik Digest on Twitter Afrik Digest on Instagram Afrik Digest on YouTube Center for Community Media at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York on social media Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY on Facebook Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY on Twitter  Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY on YouTube KETO 93.9 FM on social media KETO 93.9 FM on Facebook KETO 93.9 FM on Twitter KETO 93.9 FM on YouTube City of Aurora on social media City of Aurora on Facebook City of Aurora on Twitter City of Aurora on Instagram The Colorado Dream: Newcomers Welcome is a production from KUNC. He is also an active community-engaged health researcher who partners with neighbors and community leaders to translate and share research findings to those most impacted by them.In this episode, Prabhakaran shared a screenshot of a virtual meeting of the Chicago Community, Media & Research Partnership (CCMRP) that took place during the first month of the COVID-19 pandemic. At the time, the partnership of community leaders, community media journalists, and community-engaged health researchers was just a few months into a two-year project dedicated to making health research more accessible through community media. Looking at this photo, Prabhakaran sees a group of people with a wide variety of backgrounds and experiences who came together with a common goal: improving health equity.
