In episode 260 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked back in with journalist, presenter and DJ, Amber Haque. We first checked in with Amber in JCIP #177 to discuss her brilliant and powerful BBC documentary series, 'Hometown: A Killing', series two, which focused on the murder of teenager Yousef Makki. We also discussed her workplace anxiety and ADHD symptoms she exhibited in childhood and adolescence. Since then, Amber has been a very busy bee. She has just joined as the new co-host of an existing true crime podcast on BBC Sounds called 'Bad People'. She has also presented another fantastic documentary, this time a one-off programme on Channel 4 about the rise in diet pills in the UK, as part of the channel's UNTOLD series. Since we last spoke, Amber is working with a life coach to manage her ADHD symptoms and work out positive coping strategies and tools so she can thrive as a journalist alongside it. In this episode we discuss: the state of the journalism industry and how it's even more precarious and unstable than it was before Covid-19, a deep dive into her film on diet pills through a mental health lens, some of the stories she's covered on Bad People and the possible psychological reason why women in particular seem to love the true crime genre! For Amber's continued mental health journey, she got married in 2023 and we discuss the joys of it and the challenges of organising it. We also discuss her continued self-awareness around her ADHD and how she's trying to manage it better, as well as the stigma she still feels around disclosing it in the workplace. As Amber reflects on the woman she has become over these past three years, she is filled with gratitude for the challenging yet transformative journey. It has been an uphill battle, fighting against the stronghold of age-old habits and beliefs, yet every step has been undeniably worth it. Amber wants to share her story with you, highlighting the pivotal moments that have reshaped her life. In this episode of the Wellness Revolution Podcast, Amber explores the common blind spots that many women, particularly mothers, share and discusses how understanding and addressing these has empowered her to make significant changes. There's something profoundly liberating about unveiling the stories we tell ourselves. For Amber, it was the constant excuse of 'not having enough time,' which was merely a facade for a deep-seated belief of unworthiness. She was caught in the vicious cycle of inconsistency, with negative self-talk often chipping away at self-confidence. However, shining a light on these patterns not only revealed their roots in her childhood experience but also charted the path towards overcoming them. Confidence, as Amber discovered, is an inside job. It's about shedding the shackles of external validation and embracing self-love, regardless of our size or appearance. Amber is thrilled to announce a free two-day event designed to empower women to uncover their blind spots and start making transformative changes. This workshop will underscore the power of self-talk and belief, providing you with the tools to rewrite your narrative and reclaim your confidence. For more information, check out the link below. In episode 177 of The Just Checking In Podcast we checked in with journalist Amber Haque. Amber is a freelance journalist and the presenter of 'Hometown: A Killing' series two. The show followed Amber as she went back to her hometown of Manchester to investigate the death of teenager Yousef Makki, who was privately educated. In this episode we discuss the themes the series explores through a mental health lens including: why so many private school boys are gravitating towards carrying knives and the mental stress Amber faced from presenting the series when she knew so many of the people involved in the series personally. We also discuss anxiety she's felt in the workplace throughout her varied career and the financial challenges of being a freelancer in the industry. For Amber's mental health, we discuss her desire to be mentally assessed after she realised she may have ADHD and has exhibited symptoms of it throughout childhood and adulthood respectively. This is part 5 of Amber's series about shifts that are necessary to achieve sustainable weight loss, keep the weight off, and create a lifestyle that feels effortless. It all boils down to habit and mindset changes that allow you to live a lifestyle that works for you and gets you off the diet wagon once and for all. If you haven't checked out parts 1-4 yet, go through them and really let those ideas sink in before capping things off with shift number 5. They lay the foundation that this final shift can't exist without because sustainable weight loss starts with your mindset and your initiative. Shift number 5 is a shift that literally changed Amber's life and yanked her off the endless diet train and out of the vicious spiral of continually gaining back lost weight, with reinforced nasty habits to boot! What was that life-altering final step? She hired a mentor. Her mentor helped her unravel her limiting beliefs around food and her own body, and as a result, led her down a better path. That mentor wasn't cheap, but Amber was dead tired of doing things on her own. She didn't necessarily need more information. She needed accountability, guidance, and a streamlined process. Really, she needed somebody who could be her cheerleader without judging her for her unproductive beliefs and unhealthy habits. In other words, Amber needed someone who could give her the confidence to continue on when things weren't going as planned. If the pain of sliding back into old habits (and your old weight!) is greater than the pain of writing a relatively sizable check for a high-quality mentor, go with the mentor! For Amber, that decision was the best she's ever made in her life, and it could be for yours, too, if you decide to take the leap. Key Highlights Why diets actually cause weight gain How focusing on the process and not the outcome leads to a sustainable weight loss journey The importance of the hormonal fat loss blueprint Healing our relationship with food The life-changing power of hiring the right mentor Episode resources: Join Amber's FREE 2-day event happening February 7 & 8: ambershaw.com/wellness-revolution-event Get your Magnesium L-Threonate from Cymbiotika here, and use code AMBER15 for 15% OFF About Amber Shaw Amber is a Mind and Body Transformation Expert, Founder of The Wellness Revolution, motivational speaker, and NBC Health and Wellness Coach. As we are heading into another New Year, this is the perfect time to talk about goal setting. You may be reflecting on the last year and thinking about what you want to achieve in 2023, but what if you have been approaching goal setting all wrong? For Amber, she used to set extreme goals that would eventually fade out, leading to a feeling of failure and frustration. What she has learned is that so often, we aren't setting realistic and sustainable goals. You should know that we are all about “realistic and sustainable” around here, so how do we approach goal setting in a way that sets us up for success and gets us those wins? Amber has 3 tips in this episode to help you transform how you are setting goals so you can actually achieve them. Amber's first tip is to focus on the process instead of the outcome. Instead of setting a goal of losing X amount of weight, think about what it would take to get there, and work your way backward. Maybe part of that is getting a regular workout routine, which means setting aside time for it, which could mean getting up earlier, which means going to bed earlier. Now your new goal is to go to bed at a certain time, which is specific and sets you up to achieve the bigger picture. When you focus on the habits of a healthy person, weight loss is the byproduct. The next tip is to go SLOW. For so many of us, we have a knee-jerk reaction to jump into a “quick-fix” diet, but we already know those do not work for long-lasting results. To make lasting, sustainable change, we need to go slowly. What we want to achieve is a lifestyle change that will stick, and that doesn't happen overnight. It happens with intentional incremental changes and mindset shifts. The third tip is to make sure you are setting SMART goals. This stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely. All goals should have a component of each of these, and Amber walks you through what that looks like. You may be thinking that your goal is weight loss, but If you want to lose weight and keep it off for good, you need to focus on both the mindset and what it will actually take to get to that goal. Tune in to hear these tips and walk into 2023 with goals that will actually stick! Key Highlights Amber shares how she has shifted her goal-setting over the years after realizing the old way was not working People hop on diets at the beginning of the year for quick fixes but the problem is that they don't focus on how to maintain it, so the weight comes back Tip #1: Focus on the PROCESS, not the OUTCOME Tip #2: Go slowly- sustainable and realistic changes won't happen with a quick fix Tip #3: Setting SMART goals- realistic, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely Celebrate the wins! She brings over two decades of experience in education and the social sector as an educator, researcher, facilitator, advisor, entrepreneur, and organizer. You might know her as a supermodel, actress, and an activist. She's worn many different hats both on and off camera, but she also plays the role of sustainability ambassador to a diverse roster of partners, such as Karl Lagerfeld, British Vogue, and New York City's FIT. In this episode, we talk about the joys of creativity, Amber's love for the fashion industry, her passion for continued education—an effort to make a greater impact along the way—and the challenging task of reconciling the disparity between a traditional growth model and a sustainable one. Episode Highlights Amber talks about her journey in fashion and at what point in her career she realized the impact that fashion has on the environment and more. When Amber was in her 20s she felt disconnected and started looking for things outside of modeling that fulfilled her as a person, such as education and the environment. When she first moved to Los Angeles, she became more aware of and better understood pressing climate change issues, and started working with various NGOs. One, in particular, The NRDC, was working inside the fashion industry and it was doing something called “clean by design.” When Amber decided to come back to fashion a few years ago, she had launched a platform for responsibly made fashion, Master & Muse. Once she started that, she found that she needed to match her values to what she was doing in her career, whether it was acting or modeling—anything that she was doing. The lens through which Amber looks is directed by environmental and social justice. For Amber, it all started with an insular group of people who are still at the table talking about environmental and social justice today;some belong to charities, organizations, NGOs, B2B conferences, or sustainability panels. The climate crisis is here. It's not something far off in the distant future. It's already happening, and we've seen and experienced all of the changes in conversations around diversity and equitable living wages for people, but there needs to be more. According to Amber, the biggest conversation that we are having right now is about these issues, and if you are not talking about them and you are not thinking about them, then you are doing something wrong. “You can't support a brand or a company if you don't know what it is doing,” says Amber. “Our perfectionist mentality is causing paralysis. It doesn't actually create solutions. We don't create solutions from being in this sort of negative mentality.” “Optimism is such a fundamental driver behind creating any real change because if you can't see beyond, to what can be, then you don't really have a great deal of fuel behind whatever it is you're trying to achieve and you will just continue to repeat the same thing day in and day out.” says Christopher. “Growth is possible, but it doesn't necessarily need to be in the way we are thinking. If we become a circular industry, we start using all of our waste as a new source for materials.” says Amber. “If we go back to what's been, the source of life for billions of years, it's way more intelligent than we are.” “When we think back to a period of time, we think about the clothing and the hair and makeup. It defines a moment, and if fashion could harness that power and move it through the supply chain to make it fair and equitable and sustainable, then the sky's the limit.” “If you get stuff in your mail that's like signing this petition for XYZ that's for the environment or human rights. If you believe in it, sign it. Don't just delete it.”

Women in Business: Inspirational Stories of Women Entrepreneurs
In this age of digital disconnection and overwhelm, making personal connections with your audience is more important than ever. After smashing into the online business scene back in 2007, Amber Vilhauer has seen all the shifting trends of the industry, and personal connections top her list of the best advice. Amber shares with us some stories of dark days from her childhood; but rather than using these experiences to feel sorry for herself, she’s learned and grown from then to become the woman she is now. What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, and all that. Since she’s been in the online business space since 2007, Amber has seen so many trends come and go. The worrying thing that’s happening now, however, is that influencers report feeling disconnected from their audiences and that social media doesn’t have the reach and impact it once did. This is why Amber is passionate about showing up as your true, authentic, and vulnerable self and making personal connections with your community. It’s no longer about your follower count, but your community engagement that impacts your business growth. For Amber, she thinks of personal connection in how she can elevate each individual experience to be the best possible, making the person she’s connecting with feel truly appreciated and special in those moments. One of the best ways to make personal connections easier is to utilize video. Put all your effort into creating videos! These videos can be used to welcome and guide people through your website, explain to your audience what action you want them to take, streamline your sales process, and more. When your face is in video and you’re showing your unique personality, your audience will feel more connected with you pretty instantly. How do you connect on a personal level with your audience? Have you started putting your energy into video and video marketing? Let me know in the comments on the episode page! And we now have to now figure out ways to develop personal connections with each person that learns about our work, regardless of expectation of that working or networking relationship is going to look like. It really is about building personal connection.” (14:09) “When you have personal connection with people, they want to give back to you because it feels good to give.” (19:02) “If you’re not suggesting to people how they move through your organization, they likely won’t know what to do and will just leave.” (30:40) Links How to Attract Qualified Buyers and Grow Your Following Find Amber Vilhauer Online Follow Amber Vilhauer on Instagram | Facebook | YouTube | LinkedIn Find Dr. Cortney Baker Online Follow Dr. Cortney Baker on Facebook | Twitter | Instagram | LinkedIn Join From Side Hustle to CEO on Facebook Subscribe to Women in Business on Apple Podcasts Are you a female millennial entrepreneur who wants to start or scale your service-based business but not sure where to start? Amber Karnes is a yoga teacher, social justice advocate, and the founder of Body Positive Yoga. Amber is a pioneer in the yoga community making noise for marginalized populations and people of all shapes, sizes, genders, races and abilities. For Amber, yoga has been an integral part of a decade-long journey toward self-acceptance and body positivity – a journey of making peace with her body and helping others to do the same. This episode of the Mindful Strength Podcast is really important to our work and is about more than just Amber's story and trajectory to living with peace and confidence, which we were so happy to learn about. It is a call to action and a conversation starter around how we can open the sphere of awareness around dominant body standards in Western yoga culture, how this stems from the layers upon layers of the systems of oppression we see across our cultures and modern societies, and what we can continue to do to change that in order to create more inclusive communities in movement and beyond. Amber shares her own story as well as her passions for yoga as a tool on the quest to radical self acceptance for herself and all beings. This episode covers the internal benefits of practice, wellness as our birthright, representation in yoga, working to support values in practice and teaching, adaptation, accessibility, inclusion, normalization and the power of language. Kathryn and Amber address the responsibility we hold as teachers to engage and communicate with people in bigger bodies and people of ALL abilities in meaningful, positive and inclusives ways, and to honor the courage it takes when people show up for themselves in all of their vulnerability.

If you were to ask a five-year-old Amber Aziza what she wanted to be when she grew up, she would have told you two words: In charge. For Amber, this didn't just mean having money; it was about having control of her own destiny. As a child of foster care, who survived a tumultuous environment before being adopted, Amber’s forever family cultivated this part of her – with a long list of after-school activities that she wanted to experience (and even some that she didn’t). And this curious and adventurous spirit is still a part of who she is today as CEO of Asquared, her coaching company where she is devoted to helping millennial and millennial-minded entrepreneurs succeed in business and life. But it was Amber's first company -- which she built into a multi million enterprise at the expense of her health and sold before she was age 30 -- that taught her some of her most valuable lessons personally and professionally. On this episode, Amber talks about openly about lessons she learned about betting on yourself, building a multi million dollar business that's bigger than you, knowing when it's time to move on and taking necessary time to heal when life interrupts business.
