Horror Queers Podcast: Every week Joe Lipsett and Trace Thurman tackle a horror film with LGBTQ+ themes, a high camp quotient or both. Today I am joined by Brett from The Prosecutors and Robin from We Saw the Devil where we talk about Robin's favorite film and the subject of her dissertation Martyrs. Martyrs is a very polarizing horror movie in the category of French Extremity. Director Pascal Laugier takes the viewer on a journey of a lifetime from revenge, to the exploration of trauma, to torture, to finally arrive at transcendence. Spoiler alerts, if you have not seen then movie then I urge you to watch it first. This movie may be very upsetting for some viewers, please exercise caution and self care while viewing.
It's been called The Paris Texas Chainsaw Massacre by smartasses, but Xavier Gens debut feature is a one of the most overtly political movies of French extreme horror. Inspired by the rise of right wing nationalism and violent clashes between protestors and Parisian police in the early 21st century, Frontiers is the grim tale of four Muslims that escape Paris' burning streets after committing a robbery only to fall captive to Nazi saluting cannibals on the outskirts of society. It is one of the bloodiest, gnarliest and mot grizzly titles we've discussed to date. Joining us this week is returning guest-writer & illustrator Dani Ryan. Dani tells us of her love for extreme horror and why this one resonates with her. This week we kick off our retrospective of French horror with one of the most nihilistic, brutal and unpleasant movies we've ever covered: Pascale Laugier's Martyrs. This unrelenting film features a final act that puts the audience front and center for one of the most horrific torture scenes in movie history. Despite all of the horror, is there a glimmer of hope in the film's ultimate message? We ask Mary Beth McAndrews (Scarred for Life) for her thoughts on extreme horror, trauma and victimhood, nihilism, and Mademoiselle's eyebrow game. If there ever was a show where we wanted to leave our listeners a sobbing puddle of existential goo, this one is it. This week, MechaGodzilla level Patreon subscriber Armando takes us into the dark world of French Extremity with two brutal films - Inside (2007) and Martyrs (2008). Sources for this episode: Films of the New French Extremity: Visceral Horror and National Identity by Alexandra West
What do Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze and Sam Rockwell have in common? No clue. Minki only spied on one of them. But apparently Minki and Tracy want to talk about all three of them for a while before kicking off the convo about this week’s movie. After some chatter about cut-off shirts, scientology and creepy roles that forever change the way you see actors, the hosts discuss this French Extremity film that came out with a barrage of dark and gruesome horror films in the early 2000’s which took torture porn (the ever popular sub-genre in America at the time) to a whole new level. Turns out, many actresses didn’t want to play the two lead roles in this film and it’s not hard to see why. As the director of this film noted, Martyrs and/or French Extremism is not about torture...it’s about pain. Hopefully it’s not painful for you to listen to these two retell this whole movie because it’s one of Tracy’s favorites. Au revoir!
