GARRY SCHYMAN BAFTA-winning composer Garry Schyman is one of the world's most celebrated voices in video game music as evidenced by his award-winning scores to the BioShock game series, as well as dozens of hit games, films, and television productions. Schyman has most notably given the universe of BioShock (including BioShock 2 and BioShock Infinite) its musical identity, scoring the hugely successful game series with a blend of haunting beauty and terrifying unease. He paid playful homage to '50s sci-fi with his score for the 2005 game Destroy All Humans! (followed by two sequels), accelerated the heartbeat in action games like Resistance: Retribution and Dante's Inferno, and gave a nod to the hypnotic style of Bernard Herrmann in the mystery game Voyeur. He has been in the fantasy world of Tolkien for the adventure game Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor and its sequel Middle-earth: Shadow of War. Schyman's film and television credits span every genre, including classic series like The A-Team and Magnum, P.I., stormy action (Tornado!), thrillers (Horseplayer, starring Brad Dourif), and family horror (Spooky House, starring Ben Kingsley) and more recently Itsy Bitsy. Among his most recent work is the Square Enix game Forspoken which will be released in January of 2023.

Ben and Tao prove their '90s credentials and try not to drop the ball as they get happy flappy paddle slappy in 2D micro-adventure, Yoku's Island Express. They talk pinball, completionism, sound effects, map modes, and what makes a ‘phone game' a ‘phone game'. Metamorphosis , created by the studio Ovid Works, is inspired by the Kafka story of the same name. There's a bit of the plot of The Trial woven into the story as well. The main character, Gregor, finds he's been turned into an insect, and it's up to him to investigate why his friend Joseph has been taken away to be interrogated. Both Mikolai Stroinski and Garry Schyman say working on the soundtrack was one of the most artistically rewarding projects they've ever done. Mikolai and Garry's music reflects Kafka's era, and they took a chance on writing music in the style of the time by Alban Berg, Arnold Schoenberg and Anton Webern. Finding a singer up to the challenge of this demanding music was difficult, but Mikolai discovered soloist Joanna Freszel who brought the texts to life. Gregor's life as a bug and Joseph's experience on trial happen simultaneously, and Mikolai and Garry traded themes back and forth so that the music they each wrote would sound cohesive. Both Mikolai and Garry

Is a man not entitled to the turn of his table? YES says the crew of the Video Game Grooves podcast, so would you kindly join us for our latest episode? Joining us in Anthony's place for this episode is Tom Quillfeldt, returning from the Laced Records "Laced With Wax" blog. Tom takes us under the sea to enrapture us with Rapture, and the vinyl release of "I am Rapture, Rapture is Me", the soundtrack to Bioshock by 2K Games, composed by Garry Schyman. We explore some of the divergent and diegetical tracks of the failed utopia and clues us in to the secret lyric that we've been singing all along.. Jeremy's pick is on the other end of the utopian scale, as he presents us with Stardew Valley, by ConcernedApe and released by Gamer's Edition. The extremely melodic double-LP release with its sunshiney outlook and whimsical album art (THAT DUCKY!) brings us back into the sunlight, as Paul illuminates us to a few secrets behind the production of the album. For our second segment, we harvest the latest news from around the web, and figure out the new releases that you may need to buy by the sweat of your brow. But remember: a man chooses, a slave obeys. In our final segment we discuss the dichotomy of "standard" composed music on vinyl compared to more novelty or creative releases, and how our preferences affect our outlooks on a number of albums, including Where the Water Tastes Like Wine, the Metal Gear Rising vocal releases and other more novel concepts. "An unexpected surprise" - Licensed games can sometimes be iffy. Much like this entry, Shadow of Mordor, the talk was quiet until the game was launched. As soon as the game was within the consumers’ grasp the gaming community talked a lot of hype specifically for one element, the Nemesis System. While some of the guys share the similar enthusiasm about the game, the other gents are not really buying into the hype. Music is by Garry Schyman. We do not own the rights to the music.
