The pervasive presence of microplastics and environmental toxins in our daily lives poses a growing threat to human health, with impacts ranging from hormonal disruption and metabolic dysfunction to immune system compromise and chronic inflammation. These contaminants, found in food packaging, water supplies, personal care products, and even the air we breathe, accumulate in the body and contribute to the rise in chronic diseases such as obesity, diabetes, cancer, and autoimmune conditions. Understanding their far-reaching effects is essential, but the good news is that the body has powerful detoxification mechanisms that, when properly supported through dietary choices, lifestyle adjustments, and targeted supplementation, can help mitigate their damage. In this episode, I discuss, along with toxin-expert Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, why we need to take action to reduce toxin exposures, reverse existing damage, and build a foundation for long-term well-being. Dr. Joseph Pizzorno is a transformational leader in medicine. Through half a century of work, he has helped establish and advance the academic, scientific, and clinical protocols for natural, functional, integrative, and environmental medicine. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine” and led Bastyr to become the first-ever accredited institution in the field. He has set worldwide standards of practice by authoring or co-authoring six textbooks for doctors, including the Textbook of Natural Medicine (over 100,000 copies in 4 languages across 5 editions) and Clinical Environmental Medicine. He is Editor-in-Chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ—the most widely read, peer-reviewed journal in the field (25,000 copies each issue). He is a founding member of the Board of Directors of the Institute for Functional Medicine, where he served three terms as Chair. A licensed naturopathic physician, educator, researcher, and expert spokesman, he is also the author or co-author of eight consumer books (most recent, Healthy Bones, Healthy You! with his wife Lara). Dr. Joseph Pizzorno is a transformational leader in medicine. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine,” which set the foundation for Bastyr to become the first accredited institution in this field anywhere in the world and validated that medicine that promotes health rather than just treats disease could be credibly taught, researched, and practiced. As co-author of the Textbook of Natural Medicine (first edition 1985, fifth edition 2020), he established the scientific foundation for health promotion medicine. With over 100,000 copies sold in four languages, over half to MDs, it not only helped reestablish naturopathic medicine as an important part of the healthcare system but also provided the scientific foundation for the transformational fields of integrative and Functional Medicine throughout the world. The innovative artificial intelligence system he created has been used in corporate wellness by 20,000 employees and demonstrated a 50% reduction in the high-risk group by providing users highly personalized guidance for what they uniquely need to restore their health. He is now leading a multiphase research study to assess the efficacy of detoxification for the reversal of the diabetes epidemic. If successful, it will change the standard of care not just for diabetes, but for the many other chronic diseases where toxins are major contributors. A naturopathic physician (licensed in WA state since 1975), educator, researcher, and expert spokesman, he is editor-in-chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ, founding board member and currently chair of the board of IFM, founding board member of American Herbal Pharmacopoeia, and a member of the science boards of the Hecht Foundation, Gateway for Cancer Research, and Bioclinic Naturals. He was appointed by Presidents Clinton and Bush to two prestigious government commissions to advise the President and Congress on how to integrate natural medicine (by whatever name) into the healthcare system. He is author or co-author of six textbooks for doctors (most recently Clinical Environmental Medicine) and seven consumer books, including the Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine (with more than two million copies in six languages) and, most recently, The Toxin Solution. As an intellectual, political, and academic leader in medicine for over four decades, he has been widely honored, such as with the Linus Pauling Award by The Institute for Functional Medicine. Most recently, in 2019, he received the Stanley Wallach Award from the American College of Nutrition. In 2018, he received the Leadership Award from the Integrative Healthcare Symposium and the Visionary Award from the Academy of Integrative and Health Medicine.

From Burdock to Blood Cleansers: dive into the power of alterative herbs with Sebastian Pole and today's guest Graeme Tobyn. With over a quarter-century of expertise, Graeme brings his wealth of knowledge from his roles as a herbalist, educator, and author, currently enriching minds at the University of Lancashire.About Graeme: Graeme Tobyn graduated from Leeds University in 1978 with a degree in Russian with Italian. He developed the Latin and French he learned at school for use in his later studies of the histories of Renaissance and early modern medicine. He trained in herbal medicine in the 1980s, graduating with the top award and, after a six-month engagement as a phlebotomist at University College Hospital, London, entered practice in 1990 as a herbalist and member (later fellow) of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists. He became a herbal trainer in 1993, working at several NIMH training clinics, and switched to external clinical examiner for two BSc Herbal Medicine programmes from 2007. In 2000 he joined UCLan as a senior lecturer and took over the leadership of the BSc Herbal Medicine there the following year. His teaching focus on the programme (2001-2012) was in clinical examination skills and therapeutics. He completed his PGDipHE in 2005. Since 2011 he has been leader of the MSc Herbal Medicine, and in 2016 took over the running of the MSc Integrated Healthcare. In 2015 he was visiting botanical medicine scholar at Bastyr university, Seattle, USA. In 2017 he was awarded a PhD in the history of medicine from Lancaster University. In this lively discussion, Sebastian and Graeme dissect the controversial and often misunderstood category of alteratives. They explore the historical context and evolution of this herbal action, questioning its relevance and application in modern herbal practice. Graeme challenges the retreat from robust treatments like stimulant laxatives and advocates for a reinvigoration of traditional, potent herbal therapies. The episode delves into the semantics of herbal medicine, questioning the adoption of terms like 'anti-inflammatory' and 'immunomodulator' and calling for a return to a language that truly reflects the dynamic nature of herbs. Dr. Amanda Tieu states, "Acupuncture has little to no risk and helps with pain, stress, and inflammation." She's seen many success stories, from helping couples with infertility to injured veterans who've tried everything for pain. In the case of Dr. Tieu's Army veteran patient, his Dr. suggested acupuncture as a last-ditch effort to try before getting surgery; spoiler alert, the veteran had so much success with acupuncture and pain management that he skipped the surgery! Dr. Tieu also discussed how acupuncture can inhibit the signals from the brain that are screaming, PAIN! It can block pain signals and turn down inflammation. I've had great success in using acupuncture to manage pain. I broke my leg snow skiing twenty-five years ago and didn't have the resources to get it fixed using surgery (I didn't have good health insurance, owned a business, and couldn't afford to take time off). I used acupuncture for pain management and inflammation. Fast forward to today, and I've trained for and completed five half marathons and surf five days a week. I can tell you that my experience with acupuncture has been nothing but positive! Dr. Tieu received her Doctorate degree in Naturopathic Medicine, Masters in Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and License in Massage Therapy at Bastyr University. She is board certified by the North American Board of Naturopathic Examiners (NABNE) and the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). She has participated in local nonprofit organizations that sought to provide care to underserved patients, focused on acute injuries and post-recovery treatments of athletes at Bastyr's Sports Medicine Club, and volunteered as a clinical care member at her local hospital. Dr. Tieu believes in providing quality patient care through an integrative medical approach. She is passionate about bringing sustainable changes to a patient's overall health. The First Lady of Nutrition Podcast with Ann Louise Gittleman, Ph.D., C.N.S.
The First Lady of Nutrition welcomes Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, ND, the founding president of Bastyr University. Dr. Pizzorno founded Bastyr University in 1978 and he coined the term “science-based natural medicine” and led Bastyr to become the first ever accredited institution in this field. In this episode, Ann Louise and Dr. Pizzorno engage in a conversation that delves into the heart of detoxification, where Dr. Pizzorno shares his insights on what he considers the most crucial foods and supplements for detoxification. They also discuss the mysteries of iron-dependent enzymes and how they hold the key to unleashing your body's detox potential – including the pivotal role of milk thistle in boosting glutathione production, an essential component of your body's natural detox system. In addition, they touch on the importance of chelation therapy, kidney support, and gall bladder health. You would be surprised to note that Dr. Pizzorno believes that arsenic is the most prevalent toxin in our current environment. But the good news is that he offers expert guidance on the complex world of toxins, detoxification, and strategies for optimizing your health. This is yet another podcast that you won't want to miss!

I love using Bison! It's very nutrient dense and contains conjugated linoleic acid (I know, what the heck does that mean?), which means Bison has anti-inflammatory properties. Here are the other reasons why I love using Bison in place of ground beef: Higher amounts of omega three fatty acids. More b12, zinc, iron, and selenium than beef. Some studies show it's got four times the vitamin E compared to beef. Lower in calories and cholesterol. It is lower fat, so it will cook faster than ground beef. This episode is a fascinating interview with fellow ND and Bastyr graduate, Dr. NIck Bitz who is now part of product formulation at Neurohacker. We talked about my current favorite nootropic product Qualiamind BUT also we talked about the emerging concepts of aging. Nick does a fantastic job of explaining what exactly is cellular aging and what are the hallmarks of this process. We talk about zombie-like cells that are known as “senescent” cells that can't quite complete their life cycle and rope other cells into this unhelpful state. New research on aging points towards a few key compounds found in plants known as senolytics that will help clear up these senescent cells. As well, Dr. Bitz and I share our favorite senolytic lifestyle and nutrition habits as well to help us all age better. We wrap up the interview with exactly how to dose these senolytic compounds and supplements, which is unlike any vitamin you've ever taken so be sure to tune into this one! In this this episode we talk the benefits of naturopathic medicine. Dr Pizzorno or Joe as we called him when he was president at Bastyr University when I went there (he's also one of the founders) and I discuss his latest research: the mighty if wee mitochondria, and how we can keep it healthy to keep us in the best health and free from fatigue. Minding the mitochondria is THE most important thing you can do for your energy, to combat chronic disease and help minimize aging. Here's his bio: Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, ND is a transformational leader in medicine. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine” and lead Bastyr to become the first ever accredited institution in this field. This validated that health promotion rather than only disease treatment could be credibly taught, researched and practiced. A licensed naturopathic physician, educator, researcher and expert spokesman, he is Editor-in-Chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ, Board Chair of the Institute for Functional Medicine, founding board member of American Herbal Pharmacopeia, and a member of the science boards of the Hecht Foundation and Bioclinic Naturals. He was appointed by Presidents Clinton and Bush to 2 prestigious government commissions to advise Congress on how to integrate natural medicine into healthcare. He is author or co-author of 6 textbooks (most recent Clinical Environmental Medicine) and 8 consumer books (most recent Healthy Bones, Healthy You with wife Lara). My book, Transforming Trauma, a drugless and creative path to healing PTS and ACE is out in September. YAY!!!Support the show
What does it mean to “be yourself” when you're learning a new language and living in a new culture? Some of us find it hard to do even in our own language! In the latest episode of The Vibrant Introvert, Matthieu Villate shares his story of immigrating to the United States from France and the struggle to be himself as he struggled to communicate, be heard, and connect to others Listen to how he - Learned to connect to the most important values of humor, playfulness, spontaneity - Seeing the difference between connecting to values as a process rather than an outcome - The paradox of acceptance and the subtle process of letting go without an overattachment to an outcome In the episode I also talk about my own struggles with being open and curious without an overattachment to a specific expectation or outcome. I give an example of making art with my son. If you want to see a picture of our Christmas wreath, click here to see a picture of it! Dr. Joseph Pizzorno likes to define himself by what he has been trying to accomplish: become a healthcare change agent. Undoubtedly, Joe is a transformational leader. He was working in health medicine and naturopathy when there were only drug medicine and dietetics. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine” which set the foundation for Bastyr to become the first accredited institution in the field. In this episode, you will not only learn why Joe calls our bodies 'Inside Machines' but you will also get his unique advice and views that will remind you why you are practicing functional medicine. Topics discussed in this episode: Why Joe defines himself as a healthcare change agent The differences between 'Disease medicine' and 'Health medicine' How Joe went from having a dream about better medicine to founding Bastyr University How he brought science to natural medicine One guiding question he advises functional medicine practitioners to ask themselves Genetics as a piece of self-knowledge and a decision tool for practitioners and patients How COVID-19 shaped Joe's view on the future of medicine and what he foresees for the next few years.
One of my most favorite things to do is to chat with another naturopathic doctor about health issues we help patients to address using the medicine we love. In today's episode, I spoke with Dr. Nicole Fujiyama, a naturopathic doctor and Bastyr graduate who specializes in helping patients to reverse autoimmunity. The secret to success turning off autoimmunity, as Dr. Nicole explains, is all about asking the question “why” in order to identify the underlying cause that triggered the autoimmunity in the first place. Then we can address the cause or causes to create a reset in your immune system. Common “underlying causes” of all different types of autoimmunity are: Inflammatory foods, like gluten Leaky gut Imbalanced gut bacteria Toxins, like from mold, pesticides and metals Medication use, such as antibiotics and NSAIDs Infections, including viral infections Stress in general There are tests we use to help us identify the underlying causes for you, but keep in mind, these are not tests you'll find at the usual doctor's office and they are not usually covered by insurance. But if you've been struggling with autoimmunity and tired of hearing “take this pill and come back in a few months” – then it's time to consider naturopathic medicine to help guide to a solution. Both Dr. Nicole and I have a family history of autoimmunity, and that motivated both of us to research more, try new things, and be willing to make changes in order to prevent autoimmunity in our lives. You can do it too! Listen in for answers to common questions and concerns related to autoimmunity, including… Common symptoms What tests to request Why we start with gut healing (even if you don't have digestive symptoms) How did autoimmunity start in the first place What triggers a flare in symptoms When is the best time to start preventing autoimmunity and What does stress have to do with it, anyway? Whether you have Hashimoto's, Rheumatoid arthritis, Celiac disease, or any other autoimmune condition, or have a family history of any of these conditions and want to stop it from happening to you… Join us for this episode and reach out for us to guide you. Running more than 3 miles a day 3 times a week gets people into trouble. Jim Fixx is a case in point. “More is only better in sex and money,” says Dr. Wong. What’s the best exercise for your body without ruining your knees or without dropping dead? Patrick asks about interval training. What’s the best interval ratio? Dr. Wong describes his natural progesterone from Mexican yam. What’s the advantage of rubbing it on your forehead? What can men and women do when they have “south of the border” problems? Why is luteinizing hormone important? pure-organic-sulfur Why is dopamine the hormone of lust and desire? How does maca boost libido, and what does ashwagandha have to do with it? What’s good for postpartum depression? What herbs can be used to treat it? Patrick and Dr. Wong talk about Dr. John Bastyr and Bastyr University. How has Bastyr’s curriculum changed? What does Dr. Wong think about the Texas “Constitutional Carry” law, where Texans can carry a handgun, either openly or concealed, without a license or permit and without testing? “It’s only back-easters and liberals who freak out about it,” replies Dr. Wong, “The more guns, the less crimes.” Dennis writes in, “Will your enzyme protocol work for adverse affects from the jab?” Do magnets stick to a fresh Covid injection? Are nanobots or ferro-fluids involved? The vaccines are causing blood clots, but why are they happening in the brain? Can these vaccines cross the brain-blood barrier? A listener ask about Dr. Wong’s Parkinson’s Disease. He was diagnosed with it in 1999, and used enzymes and EarthPulse therapy (6 Hertz) to keep it from progressing. A listener asks about atrial fibrillation of the heart. Why are magnesium IV drips so beneficial? Can you manufacture your own magnesium ascorbate in your stomach by taking magnesium oxide with vitamin C? What’s the difference between elemental and chelated minerals? Shannon writes in about what to do for lost libido after 40. What does luteinizing hormone have to do with menopause and andropause? What causes testicular failure and ovarian failure? potent-c-shen-blossom Atom writes in, “The ‘shedding’ is often caused by transmissable vaccines (self-disseminating vaccines.) See the Aug. 19, 2020, New Scientist article, ‘We now have the technology to develop vaccines that spread themselves.'” Dr. Wong predicts that the growing Red State-Blue State divide will result in secession. Washington, Oregon, and part of northern California have much in common. Northern Mexico wants to separate from Southern Mexico. “Bastille Day is coming!,” predicts Dr. Wong. A group of 120 U.S. Generals are concerned that Biden is going Communist. The Covid vaccines have caused more damage than all the viruses of the past 20 years combined. What does Covid have in common with Lyme and Mad Cow Disease? What killed José Baselga, an AstraZeneca R&D head, at the age of 61? A listener asks about treating Covid with Ivermectin. Farmers are using the same form of the drug they use to treat their cattle, available at any farm supply store.

In this episode, my guest Dr. Julie Greenberg, Naturopathic doctor and Registered Herbalist dives into functional testing to get to the root cause of rosacea and skincare to replenish the skin’s barrier. Dr. Greenberg is a licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and Registered Herbalist RH(AHG) who specializes in integrative dermatology. She is passionate about natural skin care and believes that many of today’s chronic skin diseases can be healed by using evidence-based alternative treatments. Dr. Greenberg’s health journey took her from a career in business to becoming a health care warrior. She received a BA in Economics from Northwestern University and an MBA from Stanford University and had a successful career in finance. But a diagnosis of Hashimoto’s hypothyroidism made her rethink everything she knew about health. A leading endocrinologist wrote her a prescription and told her that there was nothing more they could do for her. So, Dr. Greenberg got to work researching. She learned that women put an average of 125 chemicals on their skin every day through personal care products, and that many of these chemicals are endocrine disruptors and toxins. She started studying and making her own skin care products and saw the healing power of herbs and plants first hand. She decided to dedicate her life to her passion, and attended Bastyr’s four-year naturopathic medical school. While there she received advanced clinical training with leading experts in dermatology at the University of Washington Medical School and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Dr. Greenberg practices functional medicine and is an expert herbalist. She writes peer-reviewed medical dermatology articles for LearnSkin.com and is dedicated to using science-based research to find better solutions for our skin care diseases. Lyn Patrick ND is co-chair of the annual Environmental Health Symposium happening the end of April this year. An old housemate of mine form Bastyr so long ago we talk about vaccines in Part 2 of our discussion about COVID and why so many in the naturopathic community have been brainwashed to believe they are something we should all line up for. The bottom line: vaccines are a coverup for bad healthcare. The fact this country (US) has such continually deteriorating health with some of the lowest healthcare scores in the world is something we should all be questioning. And if we don't the planet or at least the people on it will be going the way of the dodo and dinosaur. In fact Belgium virologist Geert Vanden Bossche, who has worked with Gates et al, and is very pro vaccine, has stated that a mass vaccination plan in the middle of a pandemic is a terrible idea and that it will lead to a massive healthcare crisis including deaths. We can only wait and see come Fall when COVID variants will most likely spike again. All I can say, and Lyn and many others join me in urging you to make a choice based on sound scientific knowledge. The COVID vaccines are an experimental drug. Why put yourself in danger when building your immune system naturally is well within your reach? This is why I wrote Surviving a Viral Pandemic through the Lens of a Naturopathic Medical Doctor. You can order it through any bookstore or get it on Amazon if you don't mind too much supporting Bezos. (His wife seems nice- she's donated millions of dollars to good causes apparently.)Above all, stay well and happy and have fun...amazing what joy does to the immune system!

Most of us have had a disappointing interaction with the culture and approach of conventional medical care. Perhaps it was a doctor who prescribed a highly addictive medication for back pain while seeming minimally interested regarding the pain’s precise cause. Perhaps it was a doctor writing a script for an old-standby antibiotic for symptoms barely heard out let alone dynamically analyzed. Or maybe it was waiting weeks for an appointment with a specialist only to arrive on time for your appointment then wait for hours and spend 7 minutes with the doctor. Dr. Heather Sandison is not one of these doctors, and her practice is doing its part to drag approaches of yesteryear into the 21st century. After earning her N.D. at Bastyr University outside Seattle, she took her passion for true healthcare to San Diego, CA where she is the founder and medical director of North County Natural Medicine, a pioneering clinic of integrative medicine in Encinitas, CA. Her list of expertise is impressive: bio-identical hormone therapy, integrative neurochemistry balancing, Walsh metabolic integrative psychiatry, mold and environmental exposure detoxification, Egoscue postural therapy, thyroid balancing, gut-brain axis issues and more. She mentors students at Bastyr’s San Diego campus, preparing the next generation of medical professionals to care for the body as a whole, and for the root causes of its ailments. From https://neurohacker.com/people/heather-sandison-nd (Neurohacker Collective) (where Dr. Sandison is advisor & podcast host): "Dr. Sandison’s broad naturopathic education made her particularly appreciative of Qualia’s potential. The feedback from her patients to whom she’s recommended Qualia have been so positive that she’s helping our research team in developing future NHC products. Utilizing bloodwork and diagnostics to create custom stacks is coming down the pike for NHC, and with educations as accomplished as Dr. Sandison helming our research, we’re more than a little pumped regarding our future product lineup." During his four-decade run with St. Louis Park-based Knutson Construction, Dave Bastyr has put his building and management skills to use on notable projects ranging from stadiums and hotels to hospitals and schools. Bastyr, the company’s executive vice president, kicked off his Knutson career in the early 1980s by working as a land surveyor on the Hubert H. Humphrey Metrodome project in downtown Minneapolis. He went on to become general manager in each of Knutson’s regional offices. During his 17 years as general manager, he oversaw “numerous new construction, remodel and renovation projects,” according to Knutson. After a stopover in Iowa, Bastyr is back in the Twin Cities, where he serves on the company’s advisory board. In the following interview, Bastyr reflects on his time with the century-old company, how he got started in the business, and his experiences working on the Metrodome, the one-time home of the Twins and the Vikings.
