On the Glossy Podcast, senior fashion reporter Danny Parisi and editor-in-chief Jill Manoff break down some of the biggest fashion news of the week. This week, we're talking about the state of Saks Global and bringing you some takeaways from the Glossy E-Commerce Summit in Miami. Later in the episode (17:16), we host a roundtable discussion with luxury leaders about the state and future of the luxury sector. First, we break down two big pieces of news regarding Saks. The company is reportedly looking to form a joint venture to operate Bergdorf Goodman. It also secured over $300 million in new financing to help it get back to a liquid state. But Saks still reportedly owes more than $700 million in overdue payments to its brand partners. Saks's non-payment was a frequent topic of conversation at the Glossy E-commerce Summit held in Miami this week. We share some of our takeaways from the event, including how brands are meeting the demand for content and planning for the holidays. And lastly, Jill Manoff led a discussion with Bradley Carbone, deputy CEO of luxury retailer Luisaviaroma; Joelle Gruenberg, a partner at McKinsey and head of its apparel and fashion division in North America; and Tanner Graham, CEO and co-founder of the luxury branding agency General Idea. The conversation touched on how luxury is faring, how its reliance on China may have held it back in recent quarters, and how the divide between a high-net-worth luxury customer and a more aspirational customer is impacting the segment.

It could be fear or our ego & pride or past experiences that prevent us from asking for help, but if we are able to push past those things, we can get the help we want & need and know that we are worthy of asking for it.Show Notes:I don't do this well AT ALL. Growing up, asking for help seemed like something weak to do or when you didn't know how to do something, which was so embarrassing because you didn't want to get caught not knowing something. I couldn't ask for help unless I ABSOLUTELY needed it.Can you tell how unhealthy my mindset was growing up? But this is really how it was for me and how it probably was for many of you. But I'm here to tell you that you don't have to be afraid to ask for help because it's one of the BEST things we could do for ourselves. The caveat is that there WILL be people that still behave the way we are used to people behaving when we ask for help, but the majority of people want to be helpful. Allowing other people to help you gives the helper an opportunity to use their gifts & talents in what they are skilled in. It's almost a gift to the helper to have them help you, especially in a task they are really suited for based on skills alone. So today I want to share with you some tips on the best way to get out of our own fixed mindsets & ask people for help when we need it or just want it. But before we get into that, it is important to accept that there will be times when we will experience rejection. Not everyone likes to help (and it doesn't matter the reasons) or feels like they can't help (this is more because of their own mindset & imposter syndrome issues), so they will say no. If, on top of the ‘no,' they give you grief about asking for help, make sure to shut them down for projecting their insecurities onto you when they really need to focus on themselves.Rejection is a fact of life. It's going to happen. We can't hide from it forever. You can try & get really comfortable in your comfort zone, but it isn't going to keep you safe forever. There will come a time you have to step a toe out of there & you will experience it's wrath. But it's something that makes us stronger (I know that was cheesy, but we all know it's absolutely true) & helps us realize that rejection doesn't mean we failed or it's the end of the road. It just means we either need to find someone else to ask or reframe what we are looking to get out of this request. So let's go over the 7 tips I have for you on How to Ask for Help from Others:Start with this Affirmation: “I am worthy of asking & receiving help from others. This doesn't have any reflection on who I am or what I am capable of doing.”Don't Get in Your Own Way. You Have to Actually Ask for Help. Find Someone You Trust to Ask First. Have a General Idea of What You Need Help With. Embrace the Discomfort for Gained Strength. Don't Deny Someone When They Offer to Help & You Know It Will be Helpful. Season 14 continues with VERY special episode with one of our all-time ART WORLD ICONS!!!! We meet the legendary gallerist MAUREEN PALEY. Inspiration to many of today's international contemporary galleries, Maureen was in fact the reason our co-host Robert Diament became inspired to change careers to work full-time in a gallery! We discover how she began her gallery programme in 1984 in a Victorian terraced house in London's East End. Initially named Interim Art, the gallery changed its name to Maureen Paley in 2004 as a celebration of its 20th anniversary. Since September 1999 the gallery has been situated in Bethnal Green, and in September 2020 relocated to Three Colts Lane. In July 2017 Maureen Paley opened a second space in Hove called Morena di Luna. In October 2020 a third space was opened in Shoreditch, London called Studio M. From its inception, the gallery's aim has remained consistent: to promote great and innovative artists in all media.-Maureen Paley was one of the first to present contemporary art in London's East End and has been a pioneer of the current scene, promoting and showing a diverse range of international artists. Gallery artists include Turner Prize winners Lawrence Abu Hamdan, 2019; Wolfgang Tillmans, 2000 and Gillian Wearing, 1997 as well as Turner Prize nominees Rebecca Warren, 2006; Liam Gillick, 2002; Jane and Louise Wilson, 1999 and Hannah Collins, 1993. In 1994 she organised an exhibition of works by Felix Gonzales Torres, Joseph Kosuth and Ad Reinhardt at the Camden Arts Centre. In 1995 Wall to Wall was presented for the Arts Council GB National Touring Exhibitions and appeared at the Serpentine Gallery, London, Southampton City Art Gallery and Leeds City Art Gallery showing wall drawings by international artists including Daniel Buren, Michael Craig-Martin, Douglas Gordon, Barbara Kruger, Sol Lewitt, and Lawrence Weiner. Episode 1! I am very excited about today. We will introduce you to One of our Favorite Gam! Even though this game has not been launched yet, but the Enthusiasm and Response from Audience and Players have been fantastic! Even our Guild has already Invested very much in this game… Star Atlas! Star Atlas is also very new to me. What is Star Atlas, Ogie? Star Atlas is a Virtual Gaming Metaverse based in Year 2620. This Unique Metaverse introduces Unique Gaming Experience through Combination of Traditional Core Game and Blockchain. Wow! Fantastic! I heard a little bit about it too. The Game story is about Conflict between Three Factions right? Yes! There are MUD Factions governed by Human, ONI Region is a group of Alien Races, and USTUR Sectors are controlled by Sentient Androids. They are fighting for Territories, Resources, and Political Domination. This story excites me very much! I can imagine.. Being able to be a part of this game is like a New Different kind of Gaming Experience for me too. Haris, what else do you know about Star Atlas? Not much actually, but I am reading Star Atlas Whitepaper to give me a General Idea of what Star Atlas is. I know that other than it is a Serverless Multiplayer Online Game, Star Atlas is using Blockchain Mechanics to create a Decentralized Database that will not be interrupted by Individual or Group's Personal Agenda. Correct! Blockchain has also improved Gaming Ecosystem recently, and it gives Gamers a chance for Play-to-Earn inside Blockchain Games. Play-to-Earn model is a very nice evolution of Gaming. It also matches The Club Vision to bring Financial Social Inclusion to all. Not just we can Earn, I think we will enjoy the game very much because of Unreal Engine 5 System that Star Atlas uses. What do you think Ogie? I could not agree more. Unreal Engine 5 is a game changer! It can simulate Cinema-quality Real-time Environment into the Game. Imagine Flying into Space and Fighting other Factions, I think Star Atlas Users will be very happy. Of course. Especially when not just we can Fly and Fight, Star Atlas also offer Mining Resources, Staking in Decentralized Finance System, Exploring and Finding Exclusive Resources. Star Atlas offers a lot of Gameplay for us! Which part that excites you the most Ogie? For me, its actually the Space Flight simulation that we can manually pilot our ship to see the beauty of Visual Graphics that Star Atlas creates. While I also spent most of my career in Flight, I believe the chance for us to experience being in the Ship's Cockpit and take control of everything will be breathtaking! I personally cannot wait for the Mini-game or Full-version Game to come out. Same here, but that is all for today. A brief Intro to Star Atlas, and I invite listeners to visit Star Atlas Platforms and Whitepaper to see more of what Star Atlas will offer. Thank you very much all for listening, and thank you Haris. Bio: Carol Conde + Karl Beveridge are Toronto-based artists whose practice has impacted the arts ecology here and elsewhere, in ways that could not easily be overstated. Their work consistently takes up themes of labour, social justice, representation, and the power and possibility of art to make meaningful change. They have worked closely with workers, unions, activists, and a range of social justice oriented arts collectives and community organizations. Their work appropriates figures of Western Canonical art and weaves together staged photographic images of actual artists, activists, actors, and workers to expose issues including: gender inequality in the home, the workplace and in the artist’s studio, the global water crisis, the 2008 crash, and Canada’s shameful relationship to resource extraction and indigenous rights. Apart from this, they’ve helped to organize artist unions, to establish the Worker’s Heritage and Arts Centre in Hamilton and they were founding members of Mayworks, the festival where this podcast began its life. Recording Notes: This interview was recorded at the dinner table in the artists’ home, not so far from Factory Theatre in downtown Toronto. You can at points hear their pets and the jangle of Carol’s several silver bracelets. The much despised Toronto air show. Along the walls hung cases of buttons and ribbons bearing union and activist slogans and insignias, and in Karl’s modest living room studio they showed me some of the coming projects they are at work on.
