In a heartfelt and candid conversation, they reflect on the emotional journey of deciding to close their original, legendary location and the hope and excitement of starting fresh in a new space. They discuss what it means to be woven into the cultural fabric of Los Angeles and the resilience it takes to keep a decades-old institution alive through change and upheaval.Later, we dive into the archives for a live set from Brooklyn's own Active Bird Community, recorded just before the release of their album Amends. It's a lively session filled with music, laughs, and good vibes that perfectly complement the spirit of our food story. For those looking to support LA restaurants, check out the Snacky Tunes Substack for donation links and action items. I'd like to cordially welcome you to the second annual LA Food Pod Holiday Party! Father Sal and I are joined by our favorite New York-based podcast ho ho hosts, Nancy DaSilva and Bits Nicholas of Compliments to the Chef, for a jolly ole time discussing what's hot in the Big Apple, what we make of the premature closure of Frog Club, the quixotic restaurant helmed by Liz Johnson of Horses on Sunset fame, and we each bring a holiday cocktail to the table to hopefully inspire you to do some festive drinking of your own, dear listener. We close things off with an historic LA Food Pod Holiday Quiz - will Father Sal be able to secure the crown for Los Angeles, or will the interlopers from New York escape with the dub? Stay tuned to find out. In Part 2, we're joined by Marc Rose and Med Abrous, the co-owners of Call Mom Hosptialtiy Group. Their restaurant Genghis Cohen is one of the hottest tickets in town on any given Christmas, so much so, that they refer to it as their Super Bowl. Marc and Med join us to talk about how their restaurant handles the holiday, and, as the owners of La Dolce Vita in Beverly Hills, we also discuss how they approach taking over legacy spaces in a way that both honors their history, while ushering them into a new era. It's time to get deep and talk music with another incredible artist. Today we have Ben Grey, the lead vocalist and guitarist of the LA-based indie rock band Dear Boy, joining us for a special episode of Hanging On Sunset. Dear Boy has been making waves in the indie music scene since their formation in 2011, with their dreamy, anthemic sound and influences from post-punk, new wave, and alternative rock. They've released several EPs and one full-length album, earning critical acclaim and a devoted following along the way. In this episode, Ben takes us on a journey through the band's story, from their early days to their latest release, "Forever Sometimes." We'll dive into the creative process behind their music, the challenges they've faced as a band, and what's next for Dear Boy. But this conversation went even deeper than just the music. Ben and I explored some philosophical subjects, discussing the meaning of life, the nature of creativity, and the importance of human connection. It was a conversation that went on for nearly 2 hours, and I was blown away by Ben's insights. Also, quick heads up for all you music lovers out there. Tomorrow night at Genghis Cohen, Ben Grey, lead vocalist and guitarist of Dear Boy, will be performing as a solo act. And let me tell you, you won't want to miss it. Not only is Ben a fantastic musician in his own right, but he's also opening for the incredible Scout Gillett, who we had the pleasure of interviewing on our podcast in our last episode. So if you're looking for a night of great music, be sure to head over to Genghis Cohen tomorrow night and catch Ben's solo performance and Scout's amazing set. Trust me, you won't be disappointed. Now sit back, relax, and get ready for an unforgettable episode of Hanging On Sunset with Ben Grey of Dear Boy. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hangingonsunset/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hangingonsunset/support

Hi Sunset people. Or should I call you Sunseters? Sunseties? I think it's time I find you a name. You know, like the Swifties for Taylor Swift, or like the Avocados for Billie Eilish. I think you deserve a name. Some of you have been listening to me for 2 years now and I think you deserved to be addressed properly. Maybe we should do a poll and see what you like. Right now, I'll just call you “My little Sunsets”. Isn't it cute? All right, my little Sunsets, today we have Julia Laws aka Ronboy on the show. I'm going to say it clearly. Ronboy is my favorite artist of the year. I got to thank Atta Boy for the discovery because it was through them that I first heard of Ronboy. Her debut album Pity To Love just got out, she packed Gold Diggers for her release party and now she's here, on Hanging On Sunset. Ronboy music is like a blanket, it's a perfect soundtrack when you need a little comfort in your life. And we all do right now it seems. Not just because the weather is chilling. But you know, for everything crazy that's happening in our world. Midterms are coming and what I read in the news is not making me serene. It seems MAGA people are everywhere those days, entering every branch of the government. Hard to believe, hard to process. The war in Europe is also a good reason for not being so chill right now either. A Nuclear apocalypse on the horizon? Damn it, it's a really spooky season. I'm not going to list everything that makes me lose my mind at the moment, there's too many. But if you're like me and you need a safe place to release all that tension, I recommend you to listen to Ronboy. And not only, her music is beautiful and haunting, but Julia is smart, accessible and just a great person in general. I had a great time talking to her about her musical journey, her musical approach and life in general. Plus, she gratified us with an absolute tear jerking rendition of “Your Way” for Hanging On Sunset TV. If you haven't watched it, please go to our Youtube channel, on our Instagram or on our website www.hangingonsunset.com. Ronboy will be performing at Genghis Cohen on November 18th. Don't miss it. https://www.instagram.com/ronboymusic/?hl=en https://ronboymusic.com/ --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/hangingonsunset/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/hangingonsunset/support

Wow, it has been a while! Thank you so much for being patient while I am navigating and juggling a lot of work and life. This is an interview/chat with the wonderfully kind, Jamila Ford. Jamila is the host of "The Working Singer Podcast." This convo goes all the way back to October, I believe. Like I said, life has been crazy. Sometimes a very good crazy. You can find out more by checking out Jamila's website: https://jamilaford.com/home Jazz/soul singer/songwriter Jamila Ford has garnered attention for her sizable singing chops. Her slight frame belies a bewitchingly powerful yet smooth mezzo-soprano voice that gets your attention and demands a second listen. Majoring in music with an emphasis in vocal performance, Jamila attended the University of California Riverside, graduating with her BA in 2001. Since then, she has performed around the world as a solo artist and as a backing vocalist, lending her talent to the projects of artists such as Seal, Angelo (Fishbone), Melody Gardot, Spiritualized (Coachella Festival), and Bonnie Pointer (The Pointer Sisters). Drawing influences from jazz to R&B to pop, she can give you a history of 50 years of American popular music during one of her sets, with her sultry voice providing the linchpin. Jamila released her debut EP, the breezy Traces of the Day, in January of 2001; the funky ‘70s R&B-inspired Fabulous EP in 2003; and her first full-length album, the soulful and revealing Enough (a nominee for Independent Music Awards best Soul/R&B album), in October 2010. Her latest EP, the critically-acclaimed The Deep End, was released in September 2014. A collection of reinterpreted standards and an original composition. Jamila's smoky, sophisticated, and self-assured vocals breathe new life into “All Blues,” “Gentle Rain,” “Sugar,” and “Wild Is the Wind.” Her original composition, “Silencio,” is a strutting Latin-jazz tinged ode to the unspoken connection between lovers. Says Jamila, "I love music and I love to sing. Music is my genuine path in life. It is the best way for me to give of myself to this world. I sacrifice for it in a way that I do for nothing else. I feel most whole and most connected when I'm on stage singing." The Deep End was included in the first round of ballots for three GRAMMYs for Best Jazz Vocal Album, Best New Artist and Best Engineered Album and earned raves from critics, who hailed her as "...an exquisite song stylist validating an impressive artistic repertoire with economy and style" (CJ Bond, jazmuzic.com) and proclaimed "Ford is ready to take her place among the elite of sophisticated jazz vocalists" (Paul Freeman, Pop Culture Classics). An active member of West Coast Songwriters (WCS), Jamila was awarded Hollywood Songwriter of the Year for her song “Not Exactly Perfect” in 2007. She went on to compete at the grand finals alongside the year's other regional winners at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, CA. Jamila has played to enthusiastic and supportive audiences at L.A.'s Café Cordiale, Room 5, First and Hope Supper Club, Pips, and Genghis Cohen, and is also excited about her recent foray into performing at house concerts, which gives her a chance to connect with her audience on a more intimate level. Host Jamila's acoustic duo for a house concert! It's easy and fun! Find out more here. Here's to happy singing! Kristy :)
