Greetings All You Young Jazz lovers! Brian Phoenix back again with another installement of Jazzism (a katzpheno mix).... one I am certain you are gonna dig the most! I entitled this episode "Work" for two reasons, one it is the title of a composition written by Thelonious Monk and included here on the podcast (performed by Chick Corea Trio), and because work is essential to life. Work gives us purpose and it sustains us. There is an inherient nobility in all forms of work. Work loses it's meaning only when the work being done is not done to the best ability of the worker. It loses its value when it is not properly compensated or valued by the end user (employer or customer). We all got work to do, my work is simple and is stated in my tagline - "Bringing You Nothing But The Best That The World Has To Offer In Jazz Music, This Is Jazzism" as well as in my mission statement "Rescuing Jazz Radio From The Blahs!" Good people, I love my job..... now if I could only get some monetary compensation for the work...that would be awesome. Enjoy the mix, Brian "Katzpheno" Phoenix featuring: Buster Williams - Where Giants Dwell (2018) Nicholas Payton - Levin's Lope (2021) Gregory Porter - Movin' (2013) Dave Holland Sextet - Pass It On (2008) Sonny Rollins - Clear-Cut Boogie (1998) Roy Ayers - Virgo Vibes (1967) Chick Corea Trio - Work (2013) Yellowjackets - An Informed Decision (2013) Cecile McLorin Salvant - The Underling (2015) Geri Allen - Baby, I Need Your Loving (2013) Herlin Riley - You Don't Know What Love Is (2019) Roberta Flack - Tenderly (1994)

International Recorded artist, composer, educator, and bandleader Jonathan Barber was voted the #1 Up-and-Coming Drummer of 2018 in Modern Drummer. Barber has already recorded and toured worldwide with such artists as Pat Metheny, Erykah Badu, Nicholas Payton, Buster Williams, Jimmy Greene, Jeremy Pelt, Wallace Roney, Terrace Martin, Jennifer Holiday, Harold Mabern, Steve Davis, J.D. Allen, The Brooklyn Philharmonic and many more. In addition to his first-call status as a sideman, Barber has recently stepped forth as a composer and leader with his Vision Ahead band. Even with Barber's history of high-profile gigs and recordings taken into consideration, DownBeat magazine gave his latest album “Legacy Holder” 4.5 stars. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead is a powerful declaration of intent for a band that's been making waves on the modern jazz scene. Barber's blend of classic, swinging jazz with elements of gospel, rock, soul, and fusion is a compelling showcase of Barber's broad stylistic range as a drummer, performer, and composer. Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead was featured and headlined the 2018 Rainy Days Jazz Festival held in St. Petersburg and Moscow, Russia, 2019 Hartford Jazz Festival, and the 2020 Clifford Brown Jazz Festival. During Spring 2020, Jonathan Barber & Vision Ahead completed their first national tour performing throughout the West-Coast. Being an independent artist Jonathan Barber just released his third album with Vision Ahead entitled “Live at Jazz Standard” which is exclusively on Bandcamp. Also stepping into the role as a Drum Clinician, Barber toured as a solo clinician in Latin America (Mexico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina) and China (Kumming, Loyung, Hefei, Nanjing, Beijing). Barber endorses Ludwig Drums, Istanbul Agop Cymbals, Evans Drumheads, Promark Drumsticks, and Sunhouse Percussion. In this episode, Jonathan shares his background, education, and musical journey.

Buster Williams, a legendary jazz bassist, composer, and instructor, has played on numerous records with iconic musicians like Herbie Hancock, Chet Baker, Art Blakey, and Stan Getz, among others. Known for his work as both a sideman and a bandleader, Williams continues to inspire audiences with his performances and compositions. On September 28th, he will perform with his quartet at the Middlesex County Jazz Festival in New Brunswick. The quartet features Lenny White on drums, Steve Wilson on saxophone, and Brandon McCune on piano. The concert will showcase a repertoire primarily composed of Williams' original compositions. Interest in Williams grew after the 2019 documentary "Buster Williams: Bass to Infinity" highlighted his extensive career and personal journey. Now 82 years old, Williams remains dedicated to his craft, continually exploring the "infinite possibilities" of music. https://middlesexcountyjazzfestival.org/ https://busterwilliams.com/

When you find like-minded artists who appreciate each other's talents, you have a winning combination. Sometimes it’s the accident that makes the music. It’s called working with what you have.   BIOGRAPHIES::  SON LUX BIO: From the start, Son Lux has operated as something akin to a sonic test kitchen. The Academy Award® and BAFTA-nominated band strives to question deeply held assumptions about how music is made and reconstruct it from a molecular level. What began as a solo project for founder Ryan Lott expanded in 2014, thanks to a kinship with Ian Chang and Rafiq Bhatia too strong to ignore. The trio strengthened their chemistry and honed their collective intuition while creating, releasing, and touring six recordings, including Brighter Wounds (2018) and the triple album Tomorrows (2021). The result is a carefully cultivated musical language rooted in curiosity and balancing opposites that largely eschews genre and structural conventions. And yet, the band remains audibly indebted to iconoclastic artists in soul, hip-hop, and experimental improvisation who themselves carved new paths forward. Distilling these varied influences, Son Lux searches for an equilibrium of raw emotional intimacy and meticulous electronic constructions. Son Lux has most recently scored the new Daniels film for A24, Everything Everywhere All at Once (March 2022). The full score album features new collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, Randy Newman, and Moses Sumney, among others. Based in New York, Rafiq Bhatia is the first-generation American son of Muslim immigrant parents who trace their ancestry to India through East Africa. Early influences such as Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, and Madlib—as well as mentors and collaborators including Vijay Iyer and Billy Hart—prompted him to see music as a way to actively shape and represent his own identity, not limited by anyone else’s prescribed perspective. When Ian Chang describes his creative process, the phrase "third culture” keeps coming up. Born in the colony of Hong Kong in 1988, Chang has lived a nomadic life. Stationed out of New York for ten years and since relocated to Dallas, Texas, he built an impressive roster of progressive pop collaborators such as Moses Sumney, Joan As Policewoman, and Matthew Dear, among others, all while performing internationally and recording as a member of Son Lux and Landlady. Ryan Lott makes his home in Los Angeles but grew up all over the United States. Music was the one constant in his formative years spent at the piano. In addition to an extensive career writing music for dance, he has become a sought-after composer for advertising, television, and film. Lott’s feature film credits include The Disappearance of Eleanor Rigby (2014), Paper Towns (2015), and Mean Dreams (2017). He has co-produced and co-written music for and with Woodkid, Sufjan Stevens, and Lorde.   BIOGRAPHY: QASIM NAQVI  Qasim Naqvi is a drummer and founding member of Dawn of Midi. Tonight's Jazz Feature pays tribute to Black History Month with this seminal recording by Herbie Hancock. It was his final album for Blue Note records and the first by his new working band. He had left Miles Davis' band and was embarking on his own career as a leader in 1969. This album was written and created as a musical statement reflecting the turbulent times in the USA and the anger and discontent with the lack of movement in civil rights. Plus there were the assassinations, the Vietnam War and a general malaise in the USA at this time too. Hancock worked on these compositions very hard and Blue Note was kind enough to give him a larger budget for this recording as he wanted to add some musicians to the ensembles to create a larger sound. He succeeded by leaps and bounds. His core group was the great Joe Henderson on tenor saxophone, Johnny Coles on trumpet and flugelhorn Garnett Brown on trombone, Buster Williams on bass and Albert "Tootie" Heath on drums. Three non soloing horns are added: flute, bass clarinet and bass trombone. The selections save on are all by Herbie Hancock. The title track is "The Prisoner" followed by "He Who Lives in Fear" then "I Have a Dream" dedicated to the memory of Martin Luther King followed by Buster Williams' "Firewater" then ends on a quiet positive note of hope with "Promise of The Sun". The Jazz Show's tribute to Black History Month.....Herbie Hancock's "The Prisoner".
