Could Miles Davis' peak performance come alongside a bunch of kids who weren't even getting paid? In this episode, Peter and Adam dive into one of the greatest live albums ever captured, My Funny Valentine: Live at the Philharmonic (1964). We explore how Miles Davis, sideman George Coleman, and a young rhythm section (Herbie Hancock, Ron Carter, and teenage Tony Williams) made jazz history in real time with their one-of-a-kind (unpaid) voter registration benefit concert. Learn how the quintet remade Miles' go-to standards (“All of You”, “Stella”, “All Blues”...) with their conversational, free-flowing, spacious playing – and hear the evolution across Davis' career. Join us as we break down these incredible performances and prove why this underappreciated live album captures Miles' greatest playing ever (at least for Peter's ears).ABOUT OPEN STUDIO------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------As the premier online jazz education platform, with an ever-expanding course library and 20,000+ members, Open Studio (OS) has everything you need to excel and thrive on your jazz journey.Featuring everything from beginner to advanced lessons, engaging courses from A-list instructors, step-by-step curriculum, real-time classes and a thriving and incredibly supportive community, OS is the perfect platform to level up your jazz playing, whether you're a total beginner, or an advanced pro-level improvisor.Try OS Membership today! → https://osjazz.link/aboutAll about YHIhttps://lnk.to/youllhearitYB

This week's guest is Chris Fryar, primarily known for his work with the Zac Brown Band. He has also worked with Oteil and the Peacemakers, led by bassist Oteil Burbridge of the Allman Brothers Band, as well as with Victor Wooten, John Popper, Steve Bailey, and many more. Chris is powerful, creative, and consistent, yet very reactive and conversational with his playing. I was so happy to chat with him. I'll be honest—I haven't really said this in an intro before, but this conversation is what I envisioned when I started this podcast. Chris is incredible at sharing his story through his choices and offers invaluable advice along the way. This is hands down one of my favorite episodes. Please enjoy my chat with Chris Fryar about the five records that shaped him into the musician he is today. And make sure you check out his honorable mentions. He's got plenty, and they'll all make you a better player. I promise. Cheers! Peter Frampton is one of the most celebrated artists and guitarists in rock history. In 2007, he won a Grammy for Best Pop Instrumental Album for Fingerprints and in 2014 was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. His album All Blues was #1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard's Blues Chart. In 2020 Frampton was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame, his autobiography Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir debuted on The New York Times Bestsellers list, and his 2021 album Frampton Forgets The Words was released to widespread critical acclaim. Later this year, he will appear on Dolly Parton's forthcoming album, Rockstar (out November 17), as the only artist featured on two tracks. Miles Davis is one of the most influential jazz musicians of all time, and his album "Kind of Blue" is widely regarded as a masterpiece. Released in 1959, the album features some of the most iconic and recognizable jazz tunes ever recorded. The album was recorded over two days in March of 1959 and was composed of five tracks, each one a masterpiece in its own right. The album was released by Columbia Records and was an instant success, going on to become the best-selling jazz album of all time. The album is widely regarded as a landmark in the history of jazz, and is often cited as the definitive example of modal jazz. Modal jazz is a style of jazz that focuses on a particular musical mode or scale, rather than traditional chord changes. The first track on the album, "So What," is perhaps the most famous. The tune is based on a simple modal scale and features solos by Davis and saxophonist John Coltrane. The tune is a masterpiece of understated elegance, and showcases Davis' masterful use of space and restraint. The second track, "Freddie Freeloader," features a bluesy solo by tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley. The tune is named after a friend of Davis' who would always show up at gigs without any money. The third track, "Blue in Green," is a hauntingly beautiful ballad that features a muted trumpet solo by Davis. The tune was actually composed by pianist Bill Evans, who also played on the album. The fourth track, "All Blues," is another modal masterpiece that features a memorable bass line by Paul Chambers. The tune is notable for its use of a 6/8 time signature, which was unusual for jazz at the time. The final track, "Flamenco Sketches," is a series of improvisations based on a simple set of chords. The tune features solos by Davis and Coltrane, and is perhaps the most experimental track on the album. "Kind of Blue" is an album that rewards repeated listening, as there is always something new to discover in the intricate interplay between the musicians. It is a timeless masterpiece that continues to inspire and influence musicians to this day. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

At 18, he co-founded one of the first supergroups, Humble Pie. By 22, he was touring incessantly and making use of the talk box which would become his signature guitar effect. In 2007, he won the Grammy Award for “Best Pop Instrumental Album” for ‘Fingerprints,’ and in 2014 he was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame. His 2019 album, ‘All Blues’, was No.1 for fifteen weeks on Billboard’s Blues Chart. He has voiced himself in “The Simpsons” and “Family Guy” and appeared on “The Colbert Report” and “Madam Secretary.” For Cameron Crowe’s film, Almost Famous, he wrote songs, served as an advisor, and played the role of Reg. In his memoir ‘Do You Feel Like I Do?: A Memoir,’ he shares stories of his diverse collaborative work and reveals both the blessing and curse of ‘Frampton Comes Alive!,’ his breakout 1976 live album that spawned three top-20 singles and sold 8 million copies the year it was released (over 17 million to date). He opens up about his experience grappling with fame at a young age and how he continues to play despite an inflammatory muscle disease. Woven throughout is the story of his favorite guitar, which he thought he’d lost in a plane crash in 1980 but reappeared in 2011, saved from the wreckage. Wow, it has been a while! Thank you so much for being patient while I am navigating and juggling a lot of work and life. This is an interview/chat with the wonderfully kind, Jamila Ford. Jamila is the host of "The Working Singer Podcast." This convo goes all the way back to October, I believe. Like I said, life has been crazy. Sometimes a very good crazy.  You can find out more by checking out Jamila's website: https://jamilaford.com/home Jazz/soul singer/songwriter Jamila Ford has garnered attention for her sizable singing chops. Her slight frame belies a bewitchingly powerful yet smooth mezzo-soprano voice that gets your attention and demands a second listen.   Majoring in music with an emphasis in vocal performance, Jamila attended the University of California Riverside, graduating with her BA in 2001. Since then, she has performed around the world as a solo artist and as a backing vocalist, lending her talent to the projects of artists such as Seal, Angelo (Fishbone), Melody Gardot, Spiritualized (Coachella Festival), and Bonnie Pointer (The Pointer Sisters). Drawing influences from jazz to R&B to pop, she can give you a history of 50 years of American popular music during one of her sets, with her sultry voice providing the linchpin.    Jamila released her debut EP, the breezy Traces of the Day, in January of 2001; the funky ‘70s R&B-inspired Fabulous EP in 2003; and her first full-length album, the soulful and revealing Enough (a nominee for Independent Music Awards best Soul/R&B album), in October 2010.   Her latest EP, the critically-acclaimed The Deep End, was released in September 2014. A collection of reinterpreted standards and an original composition. Jamila's smoky, sophisticated, and self-assured vocals breathe new life into “All Blues,” “Gentle Rain,” “Sugar,” and “Wild Is the Wind.” Her original composition, “Silencio,” is a strutting Latin-jazz tinged ode to the unspoken connection between lovers.  Says Jamila, "I love music and I love to sing. Music is my genuine path in life. It is the best way for me to give of myself to this world. I sacrifice for it in a way that I do for nothing else. I feel most whole and most connected when I'm on stage singing."    The Deep End was included in the first round of ballots for three GRAMMYs for Best Jazz Vocal Album, Best New Artist and Best Engineered Album and earned raves from critics, who hailed her as "...an exquisite song stylist validating an impressive artistic repertoire with economy and style" (CJ Bond, jazmuzic.com) and proclaimed "Ford is ready to take her place among the elite of sophisticated jazz vocalists" (Paul Freeman, Pop Culture Classics).    An active member of West Coast Songwriters (WCS), Jamila was awarded Hollywood Songwriter of the Year for her song “Not Exactly Perfect” in 2007. She went on to compete at the grand finals alongside the year's other regional winners at the Freight and Salvage in Berkeley, CA.   Jamila has played to enthusiastic and supportive audiences at L.A.'s Café Cordiale, Room 5, First and Hope Supper Club, Pips, and Genghis Cohen, and is also excited about her recent foray into performing at house concerts, which gives her a chance to connect with her audience on a more intimate level.   Host Jamila's acoustic duo for a house concert! It's easy and fun! Find out more here.    Here's to happy singing!  Kristy :)

This amazing music was recorded in performance at New York's "Fillmore East", which was at the time primarily a rock venue. Miles Davis had entered his post "Bitches Brew" stage and was entering his new phase and a very new context for his creativity. Miles always moved forward, according to his artistic muse and gone were the standards, and tunes like "Milestones", "So What", "All Blues" etc. His new music featured more electric instruments and was governed more rhythmically by rock and funk. His trumpet work was brilliant in this new context but that very context alienated a lot of his audience but gained many new listeners. This set was recorded in June of 1970 and presents very well edited performances that were pared down to the essence by Miles and his producer, Teo Macero. They captured the best moments from two sets that actually lasted over one hour and they were cut to fit the LP format at 22 to 25 minutes. The people in Miles' band included Mr. Davis and Steve Grossman on tenor and mostly soprano saxophone, Keith Jarrett on organ and keyboards and Chick Corea on Rhodes electric piano and keyboards, Dave Holland on electric and acoustic bass, Jack DeJohnette on drums and Airto Moriera on percussion. There are many melodies segued in these two sets and the music is intense and "balls to the wall". Miles and company are smokin'!!!!

We’re featuring an interview with jazz bassist Rufus Reid on this week’s episode ofContrabass Conversations. This interview was conducted by guest host Win Hinkle, a former member of the Florida Symphony Orchestra (this orchestra dissolved in 1993) who also worked in Florida as a trombonist, electric bassist, and double bassist, including a lot of time at Walt Disney World. Rufus Reid is, without a doubt, one of the most influential bassists working in jazz today, and he has had a significant impact on double bass performance and pedagogy throughout his career. His book The Evolving Bassist was one of the earliest of the contemporary generation of double bass method books, and it continues to be a foundational text for double bass students. I recommend it to all of my students who are interested in jazz, and I use many of his exercises for arco study and sight reading practice even with students who only study classical music. We’re also featuring Rufus Reid and bassist Michael Moore performing All Blues from their album Double Bass Delights, as well as some listener feedback, bass news, a link of the week, and much more. Check out more recordings of Rufus in various settings on his website’s recordings page. Enjoy!     About Rufus Reid: Born on February 10, 1944 in Atlanta, GA., Rufus Reid was raised in Sacramento, California where he played the trumpet through junior high and high school. Upon graduation from Sacramento High School, he entered the United States Air Force as a trumpet player. During that period he began to be seriously interested in the bass. After fulfilling his duties in the military, Rufus had decided he wanted to pursue a career as a professional bassist. He moved to Seattle, Washington, where he began serious study with James Harnett of the Seattle Symphony. He continued his education at Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois, where he studied with Warren Benfield and principal bassist, Joseph Guastefeste, both of the Chicago Symphony. He graduated in 1971 with a Bachelor of Music Degree as a Performance Major on the Double Bass. The MidAtlantic Arts Foundation awarded Rufus The 2005 Mellon Jazz Living Legacy Award for his dedication to America’s National Cultural Treasure: Jazz, for his personal and professional commitment to Jazz Education in the Mid-Atlantic Region. The International Society of Bassists presented Rufus with their highest honor, The Distinguished Achievement Award, in 2001. The New Jersey Chapter of the IAJE named him OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR of 1999. The International Association of Jazz Educators awarded Rufus the Humanitarian Award in 1997 BASS PLAYER magazine, awarded Rufus the 1998 Jazz Educator Achievement Award. About Win Hinkle: Win Hinkle is dedicated double bassist and a former trombonist spending 17 seasons with the Florida Symphony Orchestra in Orlando, until its demise in April of 1993. He worked as a double bassist, bass guitarist, and trombonist for many years in Florida including a lot of time at Walt Disney World. He recently sold his last bass guitar and only plays the double bass. He currently lives in Boston but still tries to spend time in time in Florida, especially in the Winter months.
