Regarded as the most important and influential musician on the Irish jazz scene, saxophonist/flutist and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six when critics hailed him as a child prodigy. Born in Dublin city in 1971 Michael first came to prominence on an International level when, aged 10, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has been developed by his father Dick Buckley, and such legends as Milt Hinton. Buckley has found his unique voice playing both saxophone and flute. Buckley has been collaborating with the World Jazz Orchestra, where Michael represented Ireland, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival Orchestra (led by Tim Hagans), and small group tours and concerts with Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Joey Baron, Jason Rebello, Nils Wolgram, Tom Rainey, and Chander Sardjoe, to name but a few. Now in his early 40s, Buckley is rapidly becoming the most important producer of his generation. With countless albums ranging from jazz to traditional to hip-hop, Michael is making a name for himself internationally as a producer and engineer. Buckley has also performed and toured in recent years with The Mingus Big Band, Jason Moran, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Edward Simon, Pete King, Badal Roy, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Grant Stewart, Ingrid Jensen, Guy Barker, Greg Burk, Damon Brown, Kevin Dean, Florian Ross, soloist with the BBC big band, Albert Sanz, and Gerard Presencer among others. As well as frequent radio spots, Michael has made numerous television appearances, regularly works on film and television scores, and recently collaborated on recordings with Donovan, the Cranberries, The Coors, Jerry Lee Louis, and Johnny Mattis.
A companion piece to Pandemonium: A Visual History of Demonology and Elysium: A Visual History of Angelology, Seven Sins and Seven Virtues (Abrams, 2024) by Dr. Ed Simon completes this moral trilogy and finally considers God's most enigmatic of creations: None of the conundrums of metaphysics are as baroque as the motivations of the human soul. Unlike the devils condemned to perdition and the angels compelled to paradise, humans are divine creatures that house within them warring impulses. The Seven Deadly Sins and Seven Heavenly Virtues: A Visual History (Cernunnos, 2024) examines the literary, philosophical, theological, and most of all artistic expressions of the seven deadly sins and their respective seven cardinal virtues, drawing upon millennia of history to gather a compendium of humanity at its best and its worst. As a volume, the book explores the Manichean nature of the human animal in all of its grandeur and canker, motivated by the faith that tales of damnation and salvation are the only stories that are ultimately worth telling. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Tonight's edition features new music from Akira Kosemura, Slowly Rolling Camera, Scott Colley, Edward Simon and Brian Blade, Nonkeen and lots more!
On episode 213, we welcome Edward Simon to discuss the mythological history of the tale of Faust and Mephistopheles, god and the devil in theology, whether both figures can represent internal struggles between right and wrong, why so many identify with Faust's decisions, whether the story implies that willful ignorance is just as evil as maliciousness, how Faust was redeemed in Goethe's telling, whether denial of his dark side contributed to Faust obsessively pursuing power and pleasure, the mischaracterization of the seven deadly sins as extreme prohibitions, modern cautions about Faustian bargains, and how Viktor Frankl's emphasis on meaning can be a check on our hedonistic temptations. Ed Simon is the executive director of Belt Media Collaborative and editor in chief of literary journal Belt Magazine. A staff writer for LitHub, his essays and criticism have appeared in the New York Times, the Atlantic, the Paris Review Daily, the New Republic, the Washington Post, and Aeon. His new book, available July 9th, is called Devil's Contract: The History of the Faustian Bargain. | Ed Simon | ► Website | https://edsimon.org ► Linkedin | https://www.linkedin.com/in/edsimonwriter ► Devil's Contract 1 | bit.ly/PenguinRandomHouse1 ► Devil's Contract 2 | https://amzn.to/3UuFl8p Where you can find us: | Seize The Moment Podcast | ► Facebook | https://www.facebook.com/SeizeTheMoment ► Twitter | https://twitter.com/seize_podcast ► Instagram | https://www.instagram.com/seizethemoment ► TikTok | https://www.tiktok.com/@seizethemomentpodcast

WUCF's September artists for ‘In the Key of Latin Jazz' are Edward Simon and Magos Herrera. Living on opposite sides of the country, they found a way to come together for a striking homage to female Latin American songwriters. “Femininas” is given a jazz treatment while still carrying the foundation of their respective beginnings.

We continue our celebration of the Jazz Standard's legacy, following the announcement of its untimely closure. The capacity to appeal to both the beginner and the long-time jazz fan, and to combine the familiar with the unfamiliar, were some of the many strengths of Seth Abramson's artistic direction. Through a number of concerts recorded live at the NoMad venue, we want to remember a jazz club that distinguished itself, in a city with countless jazz clubs, not only for the excellent programming but also for an atmosphere that was as welcoming to the musicians as it was to the audience. The playlist features Fred Hersch; Ben Allison; Mina Agossi; Steven Bernstein, Henry Butler & Hot 9; Dave Douglas [pictured]; Jakob Bro; David Gilmore; Dafnis Prieto; Edward Simon; Dena DeRose; Gary Bartz. Based in the San Francisco Bay Area, as a member of the all-star SFJAZZ Collective, pianist Edward Simon has been a Guggenheim Fellow along with being awarded multiple composition grants as part of the Chamber Music America's New Jazz Works initiative. Simon, a Yamaha artist, has recorded 16 albums as a leader or co-leader; his latest is 25 Years, released via Ridgeway Records in October 2020. This follows Simon's 2016 album Latin American Songbook, with the four-and-a-half-star DownBeat review praising its “grand and sophisticated” sound. Latin American Songbook also won Simon an NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Jazz Album. The New York Times has praised Simon's “light, warm touch” as a pianist, while Jazz Journal International singled out “his deep emotional statements” as a composer and improviser. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thefortepodcast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thefortepodcast/support

A document of our time, as well as an exploration into a celebrated career, Venezuelan pianist and composer, Edward Simon joins us. Now based in the San Francisco Bay Area, but long associated through his work with the all-star SF JAZZ Collective, Simon is celebrating over 30 years in music with his Ridgeway Records release, 25 Years. His work has found him collaborating with prominent jazz, vocals, and chamber groups, such as Gretchen Parlato, Imani Winds, Mark Turner, David Binney, Scott Colley, and Brian Blade. The latter of which includes celebrated trio recordings along with John Patitucci. We spoke with Edward about his two-disc career retrospective, as well as his newly announced role as Associate Artistic Director with the Ridgeway Arts organization (a producer of this podcast). At the time of our conversation, the country was several months into the shelter-in-place effects of COVID-19; where musicians in particular were some of the first to lose prevalent sources of their financial living. Along with renewed light shone on familiar issues of racial injustice, the black lives matter movement, and escalated political divisiveness, it was only natural that some discussion swayed into addressing the systemic indignities more often directed towards people of color in the U.S.; implicitly, and/or overtly. Welcome to broadcast 94 of the Independent artist spotlight. We're going to feature two artists. Sadly, one of them is no longer in the independent side as being listed on CD Baby. That would be the Quebe Sisters. They started young, but yet have a really great sound. I recently got the albums we were missing. Next, Jennifer Trusdale was featured on an independent blog called Artist Track. Here is the page on Artist Track that talks about her and you can play clips from the album. On today's show, we're going to play some of the well-known tracks that were once played as classic rock or other genred music. Also today, I'm going to play a wide variety of other music as well. Ingrid Victoria is best known in the world of drag queens as the maker of extravagant eyelashes. If you've seen drag queens on TV or on stage and wondered where the heck you get eyelashes like that, now you too can get hooked up for just $25 (or $12.50 for one eyelash) at Chimera Lashes. But Ingrid doesn't stop at making eyelashes. She also crochets stuff. Like beards. If you're thinking a woman in a fake beard must look like a circus freak, head over to here and check out the photo of Ingrid in her beard. She's gorgeous. Talking of men dressed as women, Edward Simon might be studying for a Ph.D in psychology, and he night also be a photographer, but he's also an award winning actor who made a name for himself playing the lead in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Oh, and he's also a recording artist with three records and was the lead singer in the Hollywood hair-band Knife Confession. Duz Mancini came to New Orleans from West Los Angeles and never went back. 10 years later, and after a stint as a song writer in Nashville, Duz is back and making music with his band the Scorpedos. On this Happy Hour, Duz plays two new songs. If you're not familiar with the Scorpedos, do yourself a favor and check this out. Happy Hour is recorded live at Wayfare in Uptown New Orleans.

In the 31st episode of The Hot Box, Donald Helme plays all-new material from a range of sources including some of the best new releases from Ireland. Music from Dublin based quartet Åtsch, and the veteran Irish pianist working in Britain, John Donegan with his quintet. And further afield, you'll find some stunning new music from Venezuelan composer Edward Simon, from veteran pianist Kenny Barron and an extraordinary historic performance by the great Dizzy Gillespie recorded in 1978 but just issued.

For the past decade, Adam Cruz has been a member of pianist Danilo Perez's trio, which also features bassist Ben Street. But, in a business known for brief, constantly changing partnerships, he has chosen to develop and maintain long-standing working relationships such as those with pianists Perez and Simon, saxophonists David Sanchez and Steve Wilson, and the Mingus Big Band. And even before that, Cruz had established his name working with artists such as trumpeters Charlie Sepúlveda and Tom Harrell, saxophonists Chris Potter, Pharaoh Sanders, and Paquito D'Rivera, guitarist Charlie Hunter and, perhaps most notably, touring and recording with pianist Chick Corea. Cruz has a new album coming out in April 2011 called MILESTONES. Comprising eight original compositions, and featuring a true all star band including Miguel Zenón, alto sax; Steve Wilson, soprano sax; Chris Potter, tenor sax; Steve Cárdenas, electric guitar; Edward Simon, piano, and Ben Street, bass, Milestone, which was made possible by a grant by the Aaron Copland Recording Fund, marks a before and after in Cruz's development as an artist. www.adamcruz.net
