In 1989, he moved to New York, where he quickly established his reputation as a versatile musician, touring and performing with a veritable who's who in jazz. Kenny's first road gig was a world tour with The Ray Charles Orchestra. He subsequently went on the road with legendary jazz drummer Panama Francis and The Savoy Sultans, and soon thereafter, with The Jimmy McGriff Quartet. As a sideman, Kenny has also performed with jazz greats Jon Hendricks, Chico OFarrill's Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band, Lionel Hampton, Charlie Persip and Supersound, Illinois Jacquet, Dr. John, Edy Martinez, Dr. Lonnie Smith, Reuben Wilson, Charles Earland, Tony Monaco, Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Marcus Roberts, Christian McBride, Geoff Keezer, Richard Bona and a host of others. Kenny Rampton joined the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra with Wynton Marsalis as a full time member in 2010. He also leads his own groups in addition to performing with the Mingus Big Band, The Mingus Orchestra, The Mingus Dynasty, George Gruntz' Concert Jazz Band, and The Manhattan Jazz Orchestra. Kenny is also well known as being the trumpet voice on the legendary Sesame Street. Some of his Broadway credits include "Anything Goes" (lead/solo trumpet), "Finian's Rainbow," "The Wiz," "Chicago: The Musical," "In The Heights," "Hair," "Young Frankenstein," and "The Producers," "The Drowsy Chaperone," "Spamalot," "Martin Short: Fame Becomes Me," "The Wedding Singer," "Hot Feet" and several other shows on Broadway. Finally, in 2020 Kenny started collaborating with Hirschman Mutes to design the innovative KR Indigo plunger mute, which has been a hit ever since its release. In our conversation today, Kenny shares how he got his start growing up in Las Vegas in a family of entertainers. Studying trumpet at the time largely meant classical trumpet, but Kenny soon developed a deep love for jazz. This took him across the country to Berklee, and the rest is history. Kenny tells us what it was like getting a sudden call from Ray Charles to join his orchestra, being on-screen on Sesame Street, and working closely with Wynton Marsalis at the Lincoln Center. And, we learn the story of how he developed the famous KR Indigo plunger mute, in the midst of the pandemic, as not just a useful tool for musicians but a way to stay engaged with the community during that tough time. Regarded as the most important and influential musician on the Irish jazz scene, saxophonist/flutist and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six when critics hailed him as a child prodigy. Born in Dublin city in 1971 Michael first came to prominence on an International level when, aged 10, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has been developed by his father Dick Buckley, and such legends as Milt Hinton. Buckley has found his unique voice playing both saxophone and flute. Buckley has been collaborating with the World Jazz Orchestra, where Michael represented Ireland, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival Orchestra (led by Tim Hagans), and small group tours and concerts with Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Joey Baron, Jason Rebello, Nils Wolgram, Tom Rainey, and Chander Sardjoe, to name but a few. Now in his early 40s, Buckley is rapidly becoming the most important producer of his generation. With countless albums ranging from jazz to traditional to hip-hop, Michael is making a name for himself internationally as a producer and engineer. Buckley has also performed and toured in recent years with The Mingus Big Band, Jason Moran, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Edward Simon, Pete King, Badal Roy, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Grant Stewart, Ingrid Jensen, Guy Barker, Greg Burk, Damon Brown, Kevin Dean, Florian Ross, soloist with the BBC big band, Albert Sanz, and Gerard Presencer among others. Grammy-Award winning saxophonist Wayne Escoffery is my guest on the 21st episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds. What attracted me to Wayne was his prolific traveling, extensive performances and recordings with his own band (11 recordings), the Mingus Big Band (3 recordings, one a Grammy Award winner), the Black Art Jazz Collective (4 recordings), and as sideman with trumpeter Tom Harrell (7 recordings, co-producing 4) plus works with other notable jazz musicians. He is now a Harlem resident in the neighborhood where Sonny Rollins grew up, Sugar Hill, but he was born and spent his childhood years in London before he moved to the U.S. with his mother. Escoffery graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor's degree in jazz performance from the Hartt School at the University of Hartford, where he was a protégé of saxophone legend Jackie McLean. He earned a Master of Music degree from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Performance (now the Herbie Hancock Institute of Jazz) at the New England Conservatory, Escoffery today teaches at Yale University's School of Music where he emphasizes the value of real-world experience in teaching, reflecting on his own journey and influences, including his time with jazz greats like Jackie McLean and Ron Carter. We cover various topics such as the challenges facing musicians today, the lack of business education in jazz programs, and the exploitation of artists by the music industry. Escoffery also touches on the emotional therapeutic aspects of music, thoughts on mental health in the music industry. We take a deep dive into Wayne Escoffery's soon-to-be released recording, Alone. Born in the South Bronx, New York, to parents of Spanish and Jamaican descent, Mamby converted to Judaism at a young age. He began boxing in 1963, turned professional in 1969, and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Mamby's boxing career included notable victories and title defenses, facing opponents like Roberto Durán and Saengsak Muangsurin. He continued fighting into his 50s and attempted a comeback at age 60, becoming one of the oldest boxers to compete in an officially sanctioned bout. Known for his durability, Mamby was stopped only once in 85 professional fights.Mae Street Kidd (1904–1999) was an American businesswoman, civic leader, and politician known for her significant contributions during a time when gender and racial barriers were prominent. Born in Kentucky to an interracial family, she had a distinguished career in public relations and served in the Red Cross during WWII. In politics, she represented Louisville in the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1968 to 1984, advocating for landmark legislation such as the creation of the Kentucky Housing Corporation and the ratification of the Reconstruction Amendments to the U.S. Constitution. Kidd's legacy reflects her resilience and commitment to civil rights.Charles Mingus Jr. (1922–1979) was a multifaceted American jazz musician known for his prowess as an upright bassist, composer, bandleader, and pianist. He was a key figure in jazz history, collaborating with luminaries like Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, and Max Roach. Mingus' innovative compositions spanned genres from bebop to avant-garde jazz, showcased in albums like "Pithecanthropus Erectus" and "Mingus Ah Um." His music continues to be celebrated, performed by groups like the Mingus Big Band. Mingus' life was marked by his diverse heritage and experiences with racism, shaping his music's themes of injustice and discrimination. He was also known for his tempestuous personality and occasionally violent temper, alongside his brilliance as a musician. In this episode, we present an interview with the magnificent Tommy Campbell. Tommy is a drummer who has performed with Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Rollins, Jimmy Smith, the Mingus Big Band, and many other world-class musicians. He also leads the Vocal Eyes ensemble, which presents an innovative blend of percussion and vocal performance. In our conversation, Tommy shares his perspective on the necessity of improvisation in daily life and music. He tells us about his time with Dizzy Gillespie, how music has played a healing role in his life, and how he developed his world-famous "porkestra", which is this delightful polyrhythmic puppet show he performs with squeaky toys (if you ever have a chance to see him doing that, I can just about guarantee it'll bring a smile to your heart). Nasheet Waits, drummer and music educator, is a New York native. His interest in playing the drums was encouraged by his father, legendary percussionist, Frederick Waits, who played with such legendary artists as Ella Fitzgerald, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye, Sonny Rollins, Lee Morgan, Max Roach, Cecil Taylor, McCoy Tyner, and countless others. While attending Long Island University, Nasheet studied privately with renowned percussionist Michael Carvin. Carvin's tutelage provided a vast foundation upon which Waits added influences from his father, as well as mentor Max Roach and percussionist Fred King. It was Max that first gave Nasheet's formidable talent international spotlight, hiring him as a member of the famed percussion ensemble M'BOOM. One highlight of Nasheet's tenure with M'BOOM was the live concert performance of M'BOOM with special guests Tony Williams and Ginger Baker. Nasheet's recording and performing discography is a veritable who's who in Jazz. Waits has boasted stints with jazz notables Antonio Hart, Jackie McLean, Wadada Leo Smith, Dave Douglas, Mark Turner, Bunky Green, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Eddie Gomez, Steve Coleman, The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Greg Osby, Wallace Roney, Jacky Terrason, and The Mingus Big Band. Jeremy Pelt has become one of the preeminent young trumpeters within the world of jazz. Forging a bond with the Mingus Big Band very early on, as his career progressed, Pelt built upon these relationships and many others which eventually lead to collaborations with some of the genre's greatest masters. These projects include performances and recordings with Cliff Barbaro, Keter Betts, Bobby "Blue" Bland, Ravi Coltrane, Frank Foster, Winard Harper, Jimmy Heath, Vincent Herring, John Hicks, Charli Persip, Ralph Peterson, Lonnie Plaxico, Bobby Short, Cedar Walton, Frank Wess, Nancy Wilson, and The Skatalites, to name a few. Pelt frequently performs alongside such notable ensembles as the Roy Hargrove Big Band, The Village Vanguard Orchestra, and the Duke Ellington Big Band, and is a member of the Lewis Nash Septet and The Cannonball Adderley Legacy Band featuring Louis Hayes. As a leader, Pelt has recorded ten albums and has toured globally with his various ensembles, appearing at many major jazz festivals and concert venues. Pelt's recordings and performances have earned him critical acclaim nationally and internationally. Desde la muerte del genial bajista y compositor Charles Mingus en 1979, su viuda Sue Mingus se consagró a la tarea de eternizar su música a través de diversas formaciones cuyo único repertorio serían las composiciones de su esposo. De entre ellas, la más brillante y exitosa es la Mingus Big Band, una banda de 14 músicos que debutó discográficamente en 1993 con el álbum Nostalgia in Times Square. Desde su sede neoyorquina en el club Jazz Standard, la banda no ha cesado su actividad en las últimas décadas, en los escenarios del mundo entero y con una intensa actividad discográfica, reintepretando una y otra vez la compleja e insondable obra de Charles Mingus en la que se resume la historia del jazz, desde sus inicios en Nueva Orleans hasta la mismísima vanguardia del Free Jazz de los 60, siempre bajo la óptica de la heterodoxia y la rebeldía que definieron la personalidad y la música del compositor. En este nuevo programa de Radio Jazznoend tendremos la oportunidad de disfrutar de la obra de Mingus, de la mano de algunos de los más brillantes músicos del jazz contemporáneo y su música servirá también de homenaje y despedida a tres personas de indudable relevancia tanto en la creación y trayectoria de la banda, como en la propia vida de Charles Mingus, y que nos dejaron en este año de 2022: el saxofonista Ronnie Cuber que militó en la banda desde su creación hasta su muerte, el arreglista Sy Johnson, autor de muchos de los arreglos de la orquesta, y la propia viuda de Mingus, alma mater de la Mingus Big Band, Sue Mingus.

Tommy Crane is a NYC and Montreal based musician. Crane has recorded and performed with Ambrose Akinmusire, Melissa Aldana, Briars of North America, The Mingus Big Band, Linda Oh, Thus Owls, Aaron Parks, Richard Reed Parry, Logan Richardson, Bing and Ruth, Becca Stevens, Half Waif, Port St Willow, and Wood River. In 2017 Crane was commissioned by the Lincoln Center, NY, to create a multimedia piece titled "Preservation" in collaboration with filmmaker Tracy Maurice. Crane's composition was performed live and released as a full-length album in 2019. In addition to Crane, the recording features performances by Colin Killalea (Albert Hammond Jr.), Eliot Krimsky (Here we go magic), and Greg Chudzik (Steve Reich). In 2017/2018, Crane toured extensively with Melissa Aldana and recorded the Grammy Nominated album "Visions" with the band. Crane is also a core member of Aaron Parks's "Little Big" (whom he met and befriended at a jazz camp in NYC when they were both 15 years old). Crane also taught improvisational ensembles at the Accademia Nazionale del Jazz - Siena Jazz in Italy (2019-2020). He contributes original compositions to various WNYC and NPR podcasts and is also a Sunhouse artist. Boris is not only a busy bass player, he is director of the Mingus Big Band, Mingus Dynasty, fronts his own trio and quartet, and has plays with Manhattan Transfer, and records on the Posi-Tone record label. He has much to share with us about his experiences growing up in the Soviet Union, his musical service in the Soviet military and his wonderful insights about music and being a musicians.

Y no, en ese tema no tocó Max Roach, que únicamente aparecía en dos de los seis temas que se publicaron en esa grabación, aunque sí que lo hacía de un modo implícito, puesto que Max Roach fue uno de los fundadores del sello. Los otros dos fundadores fueron los Mingus: Charles y su esposa Celia. Pero eso será otro día... Los especialistas más reconocidos recomiendan, al menos, una ración diaria de Mingus. Se puede consumir a discreción ya que no tiene contraindicaciones. Para un mejor disfrute recomiendan encarecidamente mover el pie y seguir con la cabeza el ritmo de la música. Part 2 of 2.For Jazz Appreciation Month (JAM), we had the privilege of interviewing Jim Ridl: jazz pianist, composer, recording artist, and educator. Jim shared with us his insights on improvisation and differences in approach between jazz and classical musicians. This interview rapidly evolved into more of a masterclass as he then demonstrated stylistic differences between blues and jazz, various improv techniques, and even his warm-up routines at the piano. He would later earn awards and grants that allowed Miguel to continue his education, earning a master's degree in 2001 from the Manhattan School of Music in New York City. But it all goes back to when he first discovered John Coltrane and other jazz legends, and it captivated him. The pandemic has claimed its first major New York City jazz club. Jazz Standard, which opened in 1997, has shut its doors. Recordings of many artists were made there, among them the Maria Schneider Orchestra, the Mingus Big Band, trumpeter Dave Douglas, and pianist Fred Hersch. Artistic director Seth Abramson says the reaction from the jazz community has been overwhelming. “The overarching sentiment is one of great loss and then one of great gratitude,” he said, “for having had the opportunity to be a part of the room and for the opportunity to play in and (be) given the freedom to express themselves.” It’s not all bad news though for Jazz Standard. The club’s owners say they hope to resurrect it somewhere at some point in the future. Abramson says the club had a unique vibe. “The club was a home and a venue for the artists and the fans to congregate,” he said. “It gave the artists a stage to do what they wanted to do and have their fans be able to be there and enjoy the entire
Grammy Award, Sirius XM The Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer was born and raised in New York City. Nabaté's debut album called, 'Eclectic Excursions' dropped in the Summer of 2018 and until that point, he's had a glorious career journey. During his high school years, Nabaté represented the fifth generation of jazz for the preview of the Louis Armstrong Archives, with trumpet greats Dr. Donald Byrd, "Doc" Cheatham, "Dizzy" Gillespie, Jimmy Owens, Jon Faddis and Wynton Marsalis. Nabaté also appeared in a Coca-Cola commercial, directed by John Singleton and produced by Roy Eaton. While attending Eastman, Nabaté was a featured soloist with the Rochester Pops Orchestra. Mr. Isles has worked most often as a side musician for artists across hip-hop, jazz and R&B, and his own record manages to throw it all together — making room along the way for a few guest singers and rappers — while keeping a firm center. Playing with a quintet, Mr. Isles started off with “Minute Pieces of Wozzeck,” a trippy, motivic original composed around a set of 12-tone harmonies from Alban Berg’s experimental opera, “Wozzeck.” As Adam Klipple’s organ and Joshua Crumbly’s bass hit a stopped-up, two-chord pattern, Mr. Isles retorted with a circular phrase. The guitarist David Gilmore ran snaky improvisations around them, leading your ear gently astray until the rhythm section dropped decisively into a thrashing rock beat. Mr. Isles and the soprano saxophonist Ian Young played in wet blasts of harmony, and Mr. Isles drove headlong into a rugged solo. He pushed hard, leaning into the song’s screwball-fusion vibe but maintaining a measured sense of swing. Midway through the set, the rapper Elzhi — a onetime member of Slum Village, and a guest on the album — guested on two songs, and the band switched comfortably to a radiant, festive mode. Then the vocalist Alita Moses came on to sing “Find Your Light,” a standout from “Eclectic Excursions,” with a strong redolence of Esperanza Spalding’s dreamy neo-soul side. Over a mid-tempo groove, Ms. Moses sang the song’s lyrics of invitation with acrobatic poise, moving deliberately at cloud altitude. Mr. Isles responded with a solo of sharp bursts and grounded rumbles, filling some of the vertical space in the atmosphere below her. Support Burning Ambulance on Patreon Get the Burning Ambulance email newsletter Episode 55 of the Burning Ambulance podcast features an interview with saxophonist Wayne Escoffery. Fair warning: there are some sound dropouts here and there on this episode, because I got a new iPhone and consequently had to try out a different method of recording. So this conversation was recorded through my laptop using a Skype phone call, and for the most part it worked, but there are a few moments where it doesn’t. I’ve been following Wayne Escoffery’s career for a long time; the first time I interviewed him for Burning Ambulance was in 2012. For a long time, he was in trumpeter Tom Harrell’s band, and for even longer than that, and up to the present day, he’s been a member of the Mingus Big Band, which played on Monday nights at the Jazz Standard in New York back when live jazz was a thing. He’s also made some really excellent records as a leader. The 2012 album The Only Son Of One and the 2018 album Vortex were real breakthroughs, allowing him to show deeply personal and at times even political aspects of his music. He was born in England and moved to the US as a child when his mother left her husband, who was apparently not a great guy. Some of the music on The Only Son Of One is about that, and about coming to grips with his father generally. The music on Vortex deals with life in America following the 2016 presidential election, and particularly the cultural environment’s effects on his son. His new album, The Humble Warrior, is autobiographical in a more oblique way, and we talk about that some, but what’s really important on all of these records is that the music is terrific, a blend of hard bop tradition with real melodic and harmonic innovation. Escoffery is also one of the co-founders, along with trumpeter Jeremy Pelt (who was on episode 21, way back in 2018), of the Black Art Jazz Collective. Their third album, Ascension, recently came out, and while it features three new members, it’s very much in line with what they’ve been doing to date, which is presenting extremely high level modern acoustic jazz. Trumpet, trombone, tenor sax, piano, bass, and drums, playing complicated melodies and extrapolating on them with really skilled and beautiful solos. We talk a lot about that group, too, and where he sees them fitting into the jazz tradition, particularly in relation to the acoustic jazz of the 1970s. Like everyone else I’ve ever had on this show, Wayne Escoffery is a sharp guy who I had a lot of fun talking to, and I think you’re going to enjoy hearing our conversation. Tickets and Info are here Grammy winning Michael Leonhart is sought throughout the music and entertainment world as a trumpeter, composer, producer, arranger, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. He has collaborated with artists as diverse as James Brown & Wutang Clan to Meryl Streep & Isaac Mizrahi. As a trumpeter, Michael performed on Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars’ record breaking smash hit “Uptown Funk,” which won the 2016 Record of the year Grammy. He has performed with rock legends Steely Dan since 1996, recording two albums with them, including 2000's 4x Grammy winning Album of the Year "Two Against Nature.” Michael has composed music for stage and screen, including writing a song for and directing Meryl Streep on the Decca soundtrack album “Songs of Lahore.” Leonhart recently composed music for the score to Rockstar Games upcoming “Red Dead Redemption 2.” Michael’s eighth solo album, the genre-crossing “Painted Lady Suite,” by the Michael Leonhart Orchestra (MLO), will be released June 15th on Sunnyside Records. The orchestra performs both Leonhart’s original compositions as well as his arrangements of Wu Tang, Ellington and more, featuring players from bands such as Sharon Jones & the Dap-kings, the Mingus Big Band and The Roots.
Grammy Award, Sirius XM The Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer was born and raised in New York City. Nabaté's debut album called, 'Eclectic Excursions' dropped in the Summer of 2018 and until this point, he's had a glorious journey. During his high school years, Nabaté represented the fifth generation of jazz for the preview of the Louis Armstrong Archives, with trumpet greats Dr. Donald Byrd, "Doc" Cheatham, "Dizzy" Gillespie, Jimmy Owens, Jon Faddis and Wynton Marsalis. Nabaté also appeared in a Coca-Cola commercial, directed by John Singleton and produced by Roy Eaton. While attending Eastman, Nabaté was a featured soloist with the Rochester Pops Orchestra. Nabaté also participated in the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz summer program at Aspen Snowmass and its Jazz Gala at the Kennedy Center. He went on to receive his BM from the Eastman School of Music and his MA from New York University. He has composed five music scores for short films as well as contributing original music to Amos Poe's innovative film, 'Empire II'. He recently completed a score for his first feature called, 'The Rhythm in Blue'. Mr. Isles has worked most often as a side musician for artists across hip-hop, jazz and R&B, and his own record manages to throw it all together — making room along the way for a few guest singers and rappers — while keeping a firm center. Playing with a quintet, Mr. Isles started off with “Minute Pieces of Wozzeck,” a trippy, motivic original composed around a set of 12-tone harmonies from Alban Berg’s experimental opera, “Wozzeck.” As Adam Klipple’s organ and Joshua Crumbly’s bass hit a stopped-up, two-chord pattern, Mr. Isles retorted with a circular phrase. The guitarist David Gilmore ran snaky improvisations around them, leading your ear gently astray until the rhythm section dropped decisively into a thrashing rock beat. Mr. Isles and the soprano saxophonist Ian Young played in wet blasts of harmony, and Mr. Isles drove headlong into a rugged solo. He pushed hard, leaning into the song’s screwball-fusion vibe but maintaining a measured sense of swing. Midway through the set, the rapper Elzhi — a onetime member of Slum Village, and a guest on the album — guested on two songs, and the band switched comfortably to a radiant, festive mode. Then the vocalist Alita Moses came on to sing “Find Your Light,” a standout from “Eclectic Excursions,” with a strong redolence of Esperanza Spalding’s dreamy neo-soul side. Over a mid-tempo groove, Ms. Moses sang the song’s lyrics of invitation with acrobatic poise, moving deliberately at cloud altitude. Mr. Isles responded with a solo of sharp bursts and grounded rumbles, filling some of the vertical space in the atmosphere below her. Mr. Isles released his album“Eclectic Excursions” in July. 6-time Grammy-award winning drummer, Jeff “Tain” Watts, has been the drummer of choice for some of the most notable acts in jazz including appearances on Grammy-winning albums by both Branford AND Wynton Marsalis. With nearly a dozen albums as leader and countless others as a side-man, Tain has played and recorded with such artists as Michael Brecker, Harry Connick Jr., The Mingus Big Band, Pat Martino, and Alice Coltrane. Tain has also appeared in TV and film including a three-year stint on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and an appearance in Spike Lee’s “Mo’ Better Blues” as the character Rhythm Jones.
Jaleel Shaw is a heavy player. He is also a super nice guy and our conversation was one of the highlights of my week. Jaleel is killing it in New York right now and is a member of the Roy Haynes Quartet,Tom Harrell’s “Colors Of A Dream” and has also performed with Christian McBride, Jason Moran, the Mingus Big Band, Pat Metheny, Stefon Harris, Roy Hargrove, Chick Corea, Dave Holland and Jimmy Cobb and others. Jaleel was born and raised in Philadelphia and we talk about some of the influences that had on his music and life, as well as what growing up around extremely talented musicians did for him. After coming of age in Philly, Jaleel attended the Berklee College of Music in Boston and became the saxophonist that would soon take the jazz world by storm. In this episode we talk about what it is like to play with legends such as Roy Haynes and Tom Harrell, some of the things that Jaleel worked on to get to the level of a world class saxophonist, and his approach to composition that has led Jaleel to a fruitful writing and producing career. Rob Hochschild | February 1, 2013 After honing his chops as a teenager in the jazz clubs of Philadelphia, alto saxophonist Jaleel Shaw studied at Berklee on a full-tuition scholarship. He graduated with degrees in music education and performance and has orchestrated an impressive and multifaceted career as a bandleader, composer, sideman, and educator. Shaw is a member of the Roy Haynes Quartet and the Mingus Big Band, has performed on a Grammy-nominated album, and released three discs as a bandleader. Shaw returns to Berklee in February 2013 to meet with students and perform in The Checkout — Live at Berklee, a concert and live radio broadcast jointly presented by New York's WBGO Jazz 88.3 FM and NPRmusic. He'll perform at Cafe 939 on February 7, 2013.

Tonight The Jazz Show honours and celebrates the 91st Birthday of one of American's most individual and iconic geniuses of this music referred to as Jazz....the one and only Charles Mingus. Mingus was a wonderful pianist and a virtuoso bassist but one of this music's greatest composers. He ranks with Ellington and Monk at creating a huge body of work. Today Mingus' compositions are played by the Mingus Big Band and his legacy is in the hands of his widow, Susan Mingus. This album was recorded in early 1963 with an 11 piece orchestra that had played two long engagements at Bird and The Village Vanguard in New York. The music was the first album in Mingus' new contract with Impulse Records and the label spared no expense catering to Mingus' wishes in the production and most importantly in the post-production. Mingus had full control as to his musical vision and this album was one, at the time that Mingus felt was his best to date. It is a suite of 3 movements with the long 4th being an amalgam of the first three. It's called "The Black Saint and The Sinner Lady" and has some outstanding solos by Jerome richardson on soprano and baritone saxophone, Mingus on bass and piano, Jaki Byard on piano but most importantly Charlie Mariano on alto saxophone. Mariano tears and cries out with unbridled passion with some of his best playing ever. This is a challenging and dense work worthy of listening to and re-listening.Happy Birthday Charles Mingus!

For the past decade, Adam Cruz has been a member of pianist Danilo Perez's trio, which also features bassist Ben Street. But, in a business known for brief, constantly changing partnerships, he has chosen to develop and maintain long-standing working relationships such as those with pianists Perez and Simon, saxophonists David Sanchez and Steve Wilson, and the Mingus Big Band. And even before that, Cruz had established his name working with artists such as trumpeters Charlie Sepúlveda and Tom Harrell, saxophonists Chris Potter, Pharaoh Sanders, and Paquito D'Rivera, guitarist Charlie Hunter and, perhaps most notably, touring and recording with pianist Chick Corea. Cruz has a new album coming out in April 2011 called MILESTONES. Comprising eight original compositions, and featuring a true all star band including Miguel Zenón, alto sax; Steve Wilson, soprano sax; Chris Potter, tenor sax; Steve Cárdenas, electric guitar; Edward Simon, piano, and Ben Street, bass, Milestone, which was made possible by a grant by the Aaron Copland Recording Fund, marks a before and after in Cruz's development as an artist. www.adamcruz.net
Jason Crane interviews saxophonist Wayne Escoffery about his life and his new album, Veneration (Savant, 2007). Escoffery was born in London and moved to New Haven, Connecticut as a child. He sang in a boys choir and then got introduced to the saxophone. Choosing the latter, Escoffery moved into the orbit of legendary saxophonist Jackie McLean, eventually attending McLean's Artist Collective and his jazz program at the Hartt School of Music. In addition to his own band, Escoffery currently performs with the Mingus Big Band, Tom Harrell, Ben Riley's Monk Legacy Septet and in a band with his wife, singer Carolyn Leonhart.
