Regarded as the most important and influential musician on the Irish jazz scene, saxophonist/flutist and composer Michael Buckley has been playing professionally since the age of six when critics hailed him as a child prodigy. Born in Dublin city in 1971 Michael first came to prominence on an International level when, aged 10, he played flute with the legendary saxophonist George Coleman in the National Concert Hall. Though largely self-taught, his obvious talent has been developed by his father Dick Buckley, and such legends as Milt Hinton. Buckley has found his unique voice playing both saxophone and flute. Buckley has been collaborating with the World Jazz Orchestra, where Michael represented Ireland, the Edinburgh Jazz Festival Orchestra (led by Tim Hagans), and small group tours and concerts with Dave Liebman, John Abercrombie, Joey Baron, Jason Rebello, Nils Wolgram, Tom Rainey, and Chander Sardjoe, to name but a few. Now in his early 40s, Buckley is rapidly becoming the most important producer of his generation. With countless albums ranging from jazz to traditional to hip-hop, Michael is making a name for himself internationally as a producer and engineer. Buckley has also performed and toured in recent years with The Mingus Big Band, Jason Moran, Kurt Rosenwinkle, Edward Simon, Pete King, Badal Roy, Kenny Wheeler, Lee Konitz, Grant Stewart, Ingrid Jensen, Guy Barker, Greg Burk, Damon Brown, Kevin Dean, Florian Ross, soloist with the BBC big band, Albert Sanz, and Gerard Presencer among others. As well as frequent radio spots, Michael has made numerous television appearances, regularly works on film and television scores, and recently collaborated on recordings with Donovan, the Cranberries, The Coors, Jerry Lee Louis, and Johnny Mattis.

Alexandra (Alex) Ridout is a young jazz trumpeter from the UK, now residing in New York City. In this episode of Strictly Jazz Sounds, she lays out her journey as a musician, comparing the experiences and educational backgrounds between the UK and the US. Ridout recalls her time at the Royal Academy of Music in London and Manhattan School of Music, emphasizing her family's influence, especially her jazz musician parents. Highlighting her musical achievements, the conversation includes her participation and victory in the BBC Youth Competition, winning at 17 years old. She talks about her association with renowned musicians and mentors, including trumpeter Ingrid Jensen, now Dean of Jazz Arts at the Manhattan School of Music, and her involvement with the all-female group, Artemis. As with many women in the jazz industry, the topic of women's growing strength emerges. She also addresses the challenges and realities of the recording industry today, stressing the importance of patience and genuine passion in pursuing a music career. The conversation culminates with her upcoming performance on International Jazz Day and a surprise familial discovery. Alexandra Ridout generously allowed me to record portions of the show she and her quintet performed at their concert, hosted by A Tribe for Jazz as part of their 2024 International Jazz Series for International Jazz Day. This episode provides two tracks from the show and one from her Remote Duets EP that can be found at Bandcamp.com. Welcome to a new edition of the Neon Jazz interview series with Cuban Pianist, Composer & Educator Rafael Zaldivar … He talked about his new 2022 CD Rumba that combines the holistic vibe and rhythmic circularity of Afro-Cuban music with a jazz sound .. His spirituality shines on this album opening new doors to an endlessly expressive musical universe. Rumba refers to the social gatherings of the black community in Havana, Cuba. At the beginning of the twentieth century, these groups met to celebrate and praise the deceased in ceremonies full of song and dance. Wonderful artists like Terri Lyne Carrington, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Miguel Zenón, Ingrid Jensen and others are on this new project .. In Part 2, we cover a wide range of subjects, and I ask Ingrid for her ideas about teaching, including the importance of listening (including what she gets from listening to composers such as Bach and Bartok), curiosity and investigation, feeling vs. counting rhythm, and how playing Monette trumpets has helped her career. Finally, she talks about how to use listening to correct course if things are not going well.
In the Bonus Room, Ingrid talks about how she balances her life, both in terms of playing vs. composing, and also being a mother while being a performer. She talks about the influence Clark Terry has had on her, both in terms of inspiration and also her career. We end by talking about how Ingrid would teach jazz to a beginner.
Ingrid Jensen is the 2019 recipient of the Jazz Journalists Trumpeter-of-the Year award. She is constantly in demand with tours internationally - both with her own groups and also with jazz orchestras such as Maria Schneider (1994-2012) and Darcy James Argue (2002-present). In addition to her accomplishments as a trumpeter and composer, she is also currently the Interim Associate Dean and Director of Jazz Arts at the Manhattan School of Music. We begin our conversation by asking Ingrid to trace the arc of her career, from her beginnings in music and her musical family to studying at the Berkeley School of Music, moving to Copenhagen and then back to New York, eventually moving to Austria to teach at the Bruckner Conservatory in Linz, Austria. In the course of our conversation, she talks about how playing the same tune in a different country can be different.
