Tonight's Jazz Feature had one of the most widely recorded trumpeters from the 50's and 60's who eventually went into other fields after being a big part of Jazz for so many years. Donald Byrd was one of the many young trumpeters who reflected in their own way the influence of the late Clifford Brown, who died at age 25 in a car crash. Byrd along with Lee Morgan were the young heralds of the trumpet in the 50's and in the 60's Freddie Hubbard was added to that list. Byrd recorded a lot and this is from his period just before he left Jazz for other musical pursuits. This band was one he worked with frequently during the mid-60's. The Jazz Feature album is called "Blackjack" . It spotlights a sextet with Byrd leading alto saxophonist Sonny Red (aka Sylvester Kyner), tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley, pianist Cedar Walton, Walter Booker on bass and the always smiling Billy Higgins on drums. The tunes are mostly original creations by Sonny Red and Donald Byrd. Byrd wrote the title track "Blackjack", a hip funky tune. Enjoy this fine date from Blue Note Records.

Donald Vega was trained classically in piano in his native Nicaragua. He emigrated to the United States at age 14 and found a musical home with the Colburn School of Performing Arts (CSPA). He began his studies there in classical piano with Teresa de Jong Pombo and Dr. Louis Lepley. Vega started to learn the language of jazz from mentor Billy Higgins at The World Stage and continued at CSPA with Jeffrey Lavner, then later with bassist John Clayton at the University of Southern California. He went on to graduate from the Manhattan School of Music and The Juilliard School where he studied with piano great Kenny Barron, Phil Markowitz, and Gary Dial. Vega currently performs internationally as the pianist for world-renowned bassist Ron Carter's Golden Striker Trio with whom he has recorded several albums. Mr. Vega is also a professor at The Juilliard School and Hofstra University and sits on the board of BackCountry Jazz. This non-profit organization provides music education programs and performances to underprivileged youth. Vega's debut album, Tomorrows, was released in 2008 to rave reviews. In his sophomore album, Spiritual Nature (Resonance Records, 2012), he was joined by the regal rhythm tandem of bassist Christian McBride and drummer Lewis Nash. Vega teamed up again with Lewis Nash on his third album, Concerning Monty, (Resonance Records, 2015) along with Hassan Shakur, the great bassist and former Monty Alexander band member, and long-time friend and Grammy-nominated artist, Anthony Wilson on guitar. Donald recently finished recording his latest album, As I Travel (2023), with Lewis Nash on drums and John Patitucci on bass, featuring Luisito Quintero on percussion.

Tonight's Jazz Feature spotlights a great tenor saxophonist from Chicago: Eddie Harris. Harris celebrated on Oct 20, a Birthday Anniversary. Harris was born on Oct 20, 1934 and died of heart failure at 62 on Nov. 5, 1996. Harris was a pioneer of electronic attachments to his horn and was also a master of various styles of music: eg. funk, R & B, soul and of course Jazz. Harris was also a fine pianist. This album called "The In Sound" was his first for Atlantic Records. The band consists of Cedar Walton on piano, Ron Carter on bass and Billy Higgins on drums and on several tracks a fine trumpeter from Washington D.C.:Ray Codrington. The album consists of mostly standard tunes plus two fine Harris originals: "Cryin' Blues" and the first recording of a classic "Freedom Jazz Dance". This album is a fine tribute to the immence talent that was Eddie Harris. Enjoy "The In Sound".

Tonight's Jazz Feature is by a fine pianist who always seemed to have a bit of an undeserved low profile. His name is Jack Wilson and he was born in Chicago on August 3, 1936 and passed away at age 71 on October 5, 2007. He was a favorite of some great singers like Nancy Wilson and Dinah Washington and was sought after for his musicality and fine touch. Wilson performed in Chicago with all the great players from the Windy City then moved for a few years to New York and recorded several good albums for Atlantic Records then out to Los Angeles where he kept busy in the movie and TV studios and played a lot of Jazz too. He got a contract to record for Blue Note Records and did 3 albums for them and tonight's Jazz feature is his best of the 3. "Easterly Winds" displays Wilson's playing and his composing abilities and this band selected by Wilson sounds like a working band even though they were only assembled for this album. The people involved aside from Jack Wilson are Lee Morgan on trumpet, Jackie McLean on alto saxophone, Garnett brown on trombone, Bob Cranshaw on bass and the great Billy Higgins on drums. Wilson wrote 4 of the 6 tunes on the date and does the ballad "A Time for Love" as a trio and brings in a tune by saxophonist Frank Strozier called "Frank's Tune". "Easterly Winds" is an overlooked latter day classic and it tonight's Jazz Feature. Check it out!.

This version of Get Back by the one and only Billy Preston still seals the deal for me. Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
This week's guest is Jojo Mayer. I am in the midst of a project that has me going through a bunch of our past episodes (I will be announcing this project shortly and I'm super excited about it), but when I went back through the Jojo's episode, I was reminded of its importance. Jojo is mind-blowing player who helped pioneer the drum n bass movement in New York City by “reverse engineering” programmed drum loops and applying them to the drum set. He is also revered for his exceptional technique, which he dissects in the wildly-popular instructional series titled “Secret Weapons For The Modern Drummer Parts 1 & 2”. He is the leader of his own band, Nerve, which he founded back in 1997. We don't necessarily stick to the normal format in this one; Jojo is a great storyteller. We start off with a few anecdotes about a cymbal once-owned by Billy Higgins that Jojo picked up by happenstance and Jojo's time spent “studying” with Freddy Gruber, but we certainly touch on a lot of Jojo's opinions / perspectives regarding accepting influences, but knowing when they're actually a detriment to your personal growth on the instrument. He's a very philosophical man and shares quite a few nuggets of slap-you-in-the-face style wisdom. Even though this is probably one of our most-downloaded episodes over the life of the show, we've been getting a lot of new listeners and I wanted to push this towards the top because, well…it's important. I've cleaned it up a bit and put a cute lil bow in it. Stay tuned for my fun little project announcement, but in the meantime…please enjoy my chat with my esteemed guest, Jojo Mayer. Cheers! George Coleman Jr. was born into a musical family. As a drummer, producer, composer, filmmaker, and son of two musical jazz greats, saxophone legend George Coleman Sr. and organist, composer and vocalist, Gloria Coleman, he was seven when master drummer Max Roach gave him his first set of drums. George studied with master teachers including Sam Ulano, Michael Carvin and Billy Higgins. In 2019, George took on the role of film producer and released a documentary entitled “Another Kind of Soul: The Coleman Family Legacy”. The film chronicles his family's personal and musical histories and includes concert footage as well as interviews with his family and other iconic jazz figures including Branford Marsalis. Another Kind of Soul is available on various streaming services including Amazon, iTunes, Google Play, and Tubi TV. He has also released a new record as a leader entitled Resurgence. In this episode, George talks about His dad's jazz legacy that began in Memphis The influence of his mother who was a bassist and organist Being surrounded by Latin music in his childhood neighborhood in the Upper West Side Making his album a culmination of all his mentors What he learned about music from his dad vs. his mom What he learned and continues to learn from Michael Carvin How music has served as a between him and his dad later in life
Tonight's Jazz Feature is a fine album which harkens back to Don Cherry's early days leading a band called "The Jazz Messiahs" which existed in 1956/57 but sadly never recorded. This album done in August of 1988 is kind of a recreation of the Messiah's music and sound. It is much more traditional than many of Cherry's recordings. The band is Don Cherry on trumpet, James Clay on tenor saxophone, Charlie Haden on bass (replacing the original bassist Don Payne) and Billy Higgins on drums. 3 Ornette Coleman tunes are featured and one by Thelonious Monk, two by Don Cherry and two ballad features for James Clay (minus Cherry). The album called "Art Deco" is a wonderful experience and everyone is in top form. That's tonight's Jazz Feature.

Spoken word intro piece is by legendary underground Hip-Hop MC Myka 9 of Freestyle Fellowship. Origins and influences are featured in this episode's conversation with Dwight Trible, including his love and appreciation for jazz drummer extraordinaire Brian Blade and his collaboration with the great Kenny Garrett, whose album "Sounds from the Ancestors" he played on. He describes his early life in Cincinnati, before he moved to Los Angeles, and some of the racial issues he encountered as a young boy. We talk about what it was like for him to work with Leimert Park elders and legends like Billy Higgins, Art Davis, Horace Tapscott, and Kamau Daáood. We discuss The World Stage, founded by Daáood and Higgins, and its importance as a grassroots, community-owned cultural center for progressive music. Content and the sacred are important themes throughout.https://dwighttrible.com
A mythic figure in the Southern California arts scene, Kamau Daáood is a performance poet, educator, and community arts activist. Born and raised in Los Angeles, he was instrumental in transforming Leimert Park into a cultural center and is widely acknowledged as a major force driving L.A.'s Black cultural renaissance. Kamau was a member of the Watts Writers Workshop and developed his style as a "word musician" with the Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, under the direction of Horace Tapscott. Over the course of hundreds of readings, his words have lifted audiences from their seats. He's shared a podium with Gil Scott-Heron, The Last Poets, Amiri Baraka, and Sonia Sanchez, and has read in Egypt and Somalia. In this episode, we discuss his passion, energy, and intensity as a poet and ambassador of arts and culture for the community in L.A., and his pride in contributing still to its vibrant traditions. We discuss jazz and what legends like John Coltrane, Billy Higgins, and Mr. Tapscott have meant to him and his journey, as well as his relationship with Juno Lewis—the master instrument-maker, vocalist, and percussionist who played on Coltrane's classic album Kulu Se Mama.
Before his landmark Free Jazz album of 1960 Coleman recorded two albums for Contemporary (Something Else and Tomorrow is the Question) documenting his progress and evolution. With Don Cherry, Billy Higgins, Shelly Manne, Red Mitchell, Walter Norris, Percy Heath and Don Payne and the first recordings of "Lorraine" and "Tears Inside" - remarkably tonal music in the bebop tradition with some avante garde touches. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/john-clark49/support
Horace Parlan was born in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania and came to prominence with the 1958/59 edition of the Charles Mingus Jazz Workshop. after leaving Mingus he recorded prolifically as a sideman and signed a contract with Blue Note Records. His albums did well and he was a busy pianist. He developed a unique style of playing because of a handicap brought on by childhood polio which paralysed two fingers on his right hand. His albums for Blue Note sold well and yet this fine session was never issued until 1986 even though it was recorded in 1963. It was given a catalogue number and advertised but never issued at the time and this is the reason it is being spotlighted as part of our unissued Jazz Features this month. The music is superb and features a great band with Parlan leading on piano, Johnny Coles on trumpet, Booker Ervin on tenor saxophone, Grant Green on guitar, Edward "Butch" Warren on bass and Billy Higgins on drums. 6 original tunes are played by Parlan who wrote 2, Ervin who did 1 as did Johnny Coles and 1 by pianist Randy Weston. The intriguing opener called "Home is Africa" was penned by Sun Ra bassist Ronnie Boykins. The album is called "Happy Frame of Mind" and it's tonight's Jazz Feature.
I had the pleasure to sit down and dialogue with one of today's top innovators in music, Damion Reid. In this episode we discuss his early influences on the drums, one of which was learning and being mentored by legendary Jazz drummer, Billy Higgins. Damion discusses how he developed his sense of value for the elders, and a deep respect for history and the ancestors. We talk about how he came to know Robert Glasper and was a big part of Glasper's early trios which brought him a grammy nomination for the 2015 album "Covered." We discuss his most recent project with the group Selebeyone, which includes alto saxophonists Steve Lehman and Maciek Lasserre, MC's HPrizm and Gaston Bandimic with Damion Reid on drums. Selebeyone's latest album "Xaybu" is available now on all platforms. Lastly we take a deep dive into Hip-Hop and some of his favorite MC's and producers.Damion Reid is from West Covina, California a city east of Los Angeles. He attended New England Conservatory of Music and The New School in NYC. He has toured and performed alongside Greg Osby, Terence Blanchard, Steve Coleman, Robert Hurst, Reggie Workman, Jason Moran, Ravi Coltrane, Lauryn Hill and many others.
